HTC Mini+ Tips - One (M8) Accessories

Just got it and I am loving it.
Does anyone have any tips or secrets to share?

Reading the Manual, you can use it as a laser pointer when doing power point presentations from your phone apparently.
Personally, I use it to take group photos and as a tv remote while my phone is charging.

I have read the manual, thanks. I didn't notice any secrets, hidden functions or tips in the massive 3 pages of info, hence my asking the forum.

What do you use it the most for? I could see myself using something like it if I could text with it... But since that's obviously put of the question I'm not sure it brings that much to the table.

When I am working it is hard to pull out a smartphone use it effectively. My hands are dirty and I am often up on a ladder.
With the mini+ I can make and answer calls, reply to texts, read texts etc...
I love that I can speed dial the same way I can on the phone. I added a few custom text messages.
I have used it to control Google Music etc.

It's a bizarre product if you ask me. Essentially it's a Bluetooth remote for your phone if I understand correctly. Allows you to perform basic functions away from your actual phone.
I can only really see one viable usage for this and that's business users. If you're using your phone to project a slideshow or stream a video you can then use the mini to respond to calls and texts without interrupting.
Even still, I don't think it's really a great product for the everyday user, business or no business.
Screams gimmick.

Thanks for explaining. I agree, it seems like a strange product for $80ish. I mean, if you really need something like this, then by all means go for it, but I sometimes don't see the point of these flashy technologies.

Indeed. I'd rather spend the money on the HTC power back myself. Or the boom box. I'd get more use out of those. Even the Fetch would be of more use to me then the Mini.

HTC MIni+ for tablets
Whilst I got all HTC One models and this thing works well, Ultimately it could be a hot seller if it works with any android device. I've paired it with my Galaxy Note 8 3g, which has phone functionality but looks ridiculous if you use it directly as a phone. But it is severely limited. You can only pick up a call, but you can neither dial nor see anything on screen. With HTC phones, you can see who's calling, dial from phone history or through keypad etc. But nada on another device. This sucks. Does anybody know how to hack this to work with any android device. I'm sure if you know which files HTC is using in its system for all this, you can hack it like people have hacked Samsung Gear to pretty much work with any android

First, it is an overpriced nearly worthless accessory. Yes, if you want a 1999 candy bar phone, great. It also will use the laser when powered off & my dog likes to chase the red dot. However, it DOES NOT allow you to reply to text messages, not really. It lets you select pre-written messages to send, but you cannot compose on the fly. HTC also killed the 12 hr clock, in favor of 24 hr only. Whatever, not a big deal. It could be kind of useful, but the range on it really is atrocious. The degradation is nearly unbearable at 10 feet. So, why do I have this? One reason alone. It works perfectly to control Google Play Music which I use constantly in the car, of which I drive 50,000 to 60,000 miles annually.
Also, the ringtone on it is pitifully low, as is the vibration. But it makes a great remote in the car, albeit a bit expensive, controlling tracks, volume & play/pause.

I'd probably bite on this for $50. My m8 is going to be a DAP after I retire it because it is an excellent music player and has nice synergy with my C5D DAC/amp. Would be awesome to change tracks and do other stuff without having to turn screen on.

Note 2-compatible earphones with controls

I just received my note 2 a couple of days ago. Loving it! - with a couple of small caveats:
1) Why must the stock email client suck so much? With such a great and big phone one of the main advantages for me would be to be able to email efficiently. But, first thing, you can't change the background color from black. Second, no search functionality. Third, the interface isn't beautiful. All of it: Just bad. (I come from iOS so I'm used to a very well-functioning email app). Some of the other email clients at google play seem marginally better, but none are perfect. Hope for updates and an imroved client from Samsung.
2) Then to my actual question in this thread. The earbuds/earphones that came with the phone sound great. But, they are in-ear. I know that most people prefer in-ear phones, but for me, not so much. It makes me feel shut off from the world, and if I'm listening to music on my bike for example I'm afraid I won't hear important sounds from the traffic, stuff like that. So I'd like to find some alternative earphones that are not in-ear. I tried the apple earphones from my old iPhone, and they work fine for listening to music and talking, but I can't control volume or move between songs and radio stations etc with them.
So I wonder: anybody know of earphones that work with the galaxy note 2 that are not in-ear, where the controls work and that have good sound?
headphone controls
For headphone controls, i am not sure because of the diversity of android phones that you ll find a compatible model which is a shame,
you can use this free software workaround solution : JAYS Headset Control in the playstore.
Regarding in-ear headphones and motorbiking: I did just that not too long ago and broke a time record unknowingly between two cities. It's cool what shutting off the outside world can do for your courage and concentration

Might be OT but both yes and no. You might take more risks but you also don't hesitate as much which makes it safer. Hesitating while driving/riding is really dangerous too! So its a double edged sword lol...
On topic, picking one of these bad boys up tomorrow. Hope the bundled earphones are decent enough to continue my stupidity on and off the road
Sony's Smart headset MH-1c has both volume controls as well as a call recieve button which works with Samsung Galaxy SIII and Note II.
While they are technically in ear, I would recommend using the LG Tone+ Bluetooth Headset - the model number is HBS-730. It has APT-X codec, which is for the most part indistinguishable from wired headphones, plus they have insane 12+ hour life. To get around being aware of sound around you like at work, I just wear one earbud in and the other one magnetically clips to the headset, which is super handy. I typically use them 10-14 hours a day and am a headset fanatic. They have volume control, play/pause, and track forward and back. Plus they have good sound quality for the money even though they are bluetooth.

Hi, I had the same problem and eventually have taken matters into my own hands by making my own using the 3 button remote bundled with the phone and some Klipsch S4i's I had left over from the iPhone days. The results were so good I have bought some more S4's to customise and have listed them on eBay for sale. Finally a solution to this problem. When are the manufacturers going to realise there are millions of Samsung devices out there and start making some decent earphones for us!!
Cheers

Another alternative is try out the app Around Sound from the play store. It monitors external noise from the microphone and pauses your music to play that sounds to you.
I posted this in another thread, but the best retail option might be the new Samsung headphones that start coming out with the S4 - the HS330. Supposed to be better than the S3/Note 2 headphones and obviously volume and pause/answer buttons work.

Voice calls on 3g Nexus 7

What do you think is the possibility of us getting this function guys, even if its not officially supported.
I've seen it built in on the 7" samsung galaxy tab 2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ9RNhJAgjE&feature=bf_next&list=HL1351349133
Its not ideal, but im thinking it could be a useful feature so you at least have the option of just taking one device when your out and about :good:
If they had voice calls and especially messaging, then I would totally buy this as a replacement to my phone.
As a response to your question, I am pretty sure that it can be done, heck if the app is just deactivated on the stock ROM, it might be re-activeable, right?
I think messaging would be reasonably easy to activate.
The thing with voice calls is that you would either have to do them via speakerphone, headphones or bluetooth kit. I think I could live with that though for the functionality of a full 7" tablet experience. Its not something I would use in replacement to a phone every day but I'd at least like to have the option, and play with it a bit.
I was going to pick up the 32gb wifi and just tether it to my phone, but with past devices (ipad to phone) this hasn't always been a completely reliable experience and I'd like a backup plan.
So if the 3g device doesn't have much of a price premium I can see me picking one of those up instead. Im hoping its a $50 premium to the 3g device, if its $100 I won't bother.
Enabling the phone app can be easily done. The question is now well the Bluetooth support will. In the current WiFi models Bluetooth headset support has been very unstable (in headset profile). This is the idle way one would make a phone calls a voice enabled 3g n7.

Yes there are compromises. Headset or speaker phone calls I cam like with.. The not having a camera would be annoying though... :crying:
All you would need is to copy the phone apk over and get 'er done.
Funny we're talking about it because a few weeks ago I had my N7 at a football party and we we're joking how awesome my new phone was. Everyone was holding it up to their ear and making up stupid fake phone conversations. Haha.

I believe that T-Mobile (U.S) has separate SIM cards for phones and tablets. You can't just take the SIM out of your phone and put it in a tablet. Is there a workaround for this?

Our devices already have phone.apk in the system/app directory.... its our framework that needs to be tweaked to allow voice calls. If you try to copy phone.apk over or install it then you will get a message that you will replace a system app are you sure you want to so it.
Our framework is compiled to hide the app as well as some other changes need to be made to XML files in the framework.res area.

What he said + need to make sure the modem will support voice calls in addition to data PLUS let's hope google will fixe the horrible bug the wifi N7 has with BT headset profile where in 99% of the time the mic doesn't work (otherwise you will only be able to make call with the speaker phone which is lame).

I can recommend Skype. its working on every platform, free Skype to Skype calls, chat, webcam, etc. the big thing is Google voice is not available in my country so it's a no go for me.
Depending on where to call to its from two cent a minute even to mobile phones... example for Chinese mobile phones.

What I'm most interested in is having a connection for data without a wifi connection. Is that what this is supposed to be? If so, Skype could be my primary "phone". Could even bring my current cell number over when my VZ contract is up.
Not sure what everyone is talking about for the BT headphone issues. I use SKYPE now on my 16GB Nexus 7 with RocketFish RF-MAB headset and the headphone and microphone work perfectly.

I thought the question was what to use for voip. But now you change to tethering. I for tethering you have several choices.
First wifi hotspot
Second Bluetooth tethering
Third otg data stick method.
For Bluetooth I can recommend open garden even though Skype does not work with it. Tethering works fine out of box on mobile phones. And about the data dongle with otg cable you can find quite enough threads about it.

Mounted my N7 in my car

So I was sitting at home thinking how cool it would be to use my Nexus 7 as a navigation unit / general multimedia device in my car. I already have a touch screen unit in my car from Pioneer, but it’s not that great. It’s very pixelated, it doesn’t have navigation and it’s a bit small. So I devised a plan on how to mount it in my car. But before building my final mounting bracket, I decided to give it a test run, to make sure that everything would work great. I have all the maps preloaded on the device, and I have it connected to my Galaxy S3 (rooted, custom ROM) for wifi tethering.
I just picked up some “Kwik Klips 3/8” 10mm” from my local hardware store, and cut them up and guess what – it mounted fantastic. Three clips hold it on the bottom, and at the top it is tucked under my stereo door cover to make it very sturdy. I went on a 30 mile trip today just to make sure everything is smooth – and it is. This weekend my parts are supposed to come in so I can have a concealed charging cable for it so it is not using battery.
My car is a 2010 Scion tC.
I’ve uploaded four pics here, but go to my dropbox to see the gallery.

Cool. That's what I figured. I tried to grab a N4 to do the same thing (in the process of rehabilitating from the apple cult), but couldn't get one, so I'm still using the iphone (no tether without paying extra).
Yes I am using my GS3 as a mobile WiFi hotspot for free (custom ROM).
I haven't tried the satellite view yet, I don't mind the cartoonish view too much. But overall using the N7 as a navi has been fantastic.

You might want to try Bluetooth internet sharing. Its honestly the most underrated feature of android >4.0. Sure, the range is 10-20ft, and the speed is limited to 2mbs, but in a car and for navigation apps neither of those matter. You save a lot of battery though and its easy to set up by just tapping a button on your tablet only.

Bluetooth internet sharing is definitely not the ultimate solution. Many apps won't work with it. Prime examples: Pandora and TuneIn Radio. Also, nothing will download from the Play Store (at least apps).
You'll save a lot of battery on the phone, sure. When I was trying out bluetooth tether my N7 got prettyy hot, and was fine with Wifi sharing. Perhaps it was simply an app causing that, but I don't think so.
I just removed the radio cover, and placed the N7 in the hole.
...and since I'm still a noob:

I'd do this, but I don't want to have my radio constantly in view at night. One of our cars was broken into and now I don't leave anything in view.

I'm still rocking the stock head unit; no one wants that.
I thought about trimming the extra plastic off the cover (just enough to fit) and set it back in place when I parked the car.
Depends on the Bluetooth setup. If you are not using Bluetooth to stream the sound, uncheck it in the Pandora settings and Pandora works great.
I download apps all day long using Bluetooth for my data. I find it easier then dealing with a hotspot. Battery life is significantly better for me to.

Does BT support multiple simultaneous pairings? I usually have my phone tied to the car via BT. If it can do that and data share, that'd be awesome. Well, maybe. Not sure if it'd help, but it'd be nice to know.

If you were talking to me, yeah I did get the charging cable installed, and no I didn't have to rough it up at all. The tape that was with those clips was sufficient.
But now I took that all off. I just bought this iBolt windshield mount for my GS3. It's easier for me this way, because I don't have to setup tethering and charge two devices.
It was fun though while it lasted.
And it blocked my radio, so that got really annoying after a few days of not being able to switch XM channels.

Good BT headset for the Note2?

Looking for a good BT headset. I don't use them much, but am moving to a place that prohibits holding my phone in the car. My primary criteria is good voice functionality. I'd like to be able to do as much as possible without touching the phone, and preferably without touching the earpiece. Call quality should be good, but doesn't have to be best in class or anything. Mono is fine. Keep in mind that I have a very full beard, so the headset can't depend on facial contact.
I've been poring over reviews and just can't make any sense of them, so I thought I'd ask. (Motorola CommandOne seems a decent buy)
Thanks!

Thanks, I had read Vectron's review but decided it seemed more music oriented than call oriented. I'll revisit that.
Edit: Ok, now I remember the problems. It's a beard thing. On me, the mic and controls will sit under my beard. That will make it difficult to use and will probably severely diminish call quality. Darn, looks like a good one, but not worth shaving for.
Didn't have a chance to review this one yet (next to impossible to get review samples), but I heard good things about it and control remote is far away to keep it from your beard http://www.amazon.com/In-Ear-Noise-...UTF8&qid=1366911775&sr=8-1&keywords=a.m.p+iso

I wonder about mic placement on that. I *think* it's in the control unit and is meant to be clipped to your shirt. If so, that means the mic is going to be sitting down on my belly. Maybe too far away? I think I may need to stick with one of the mono units. Jawbone is out due to needing skin contact if I've understood their tech correctly.

ZZ Top!!!
After going through a bunch of headsets ( here in Hawaii, cell use while driving is illegal) I found it easier to spend $170 bucks to buy a Kenwood excelon deck with integrated bluetooth. It automatically activated when the car is started.

Moto X As Music Player/Backup phone

Hey guys, I've currently got the note 3 and absolutely love it. The only problem is that when at the gym and outside, the note 3 is a bit too wieldly to use as a music player. It keeps falling out of my pocket during sets and kind of kills the vibe.
I've got an iPod 5th gen but after getting back to android, I use it less than an hour per week. So I guess my question is: do you think the Moto X would be a good alternative to the IPod as a music player and to have a glance at notifications? It's a good size and is very pocketable. I also plan to use it as a backup phone when travelling and camping.
Im selling my iPod on eBay so I'll be using that money to possibly buy a Moto X on eBay. Some of the phones on eBay have a bad ESN but I live here in Aus so will that affect me at all?
Sorry if its a bit long but thanks in advanced guys

If you are looking at a music player for the gym, I would honestly say that something like an iPod shuffle or a SanDisk player might be better....
Now as a phone I think you will really like this device! Active notifications and touch less controls really make this phone unique. Plus the curved back and dimple in the back of the phone make it have a truly amazing form factor. Specs don't look the greatest on this device, however they don't exactly site what you are getting either.
For a music player, and just using this as a dedicated gym device I personally don't see the point (not trying to sound rude). As a phone I would say this would be an amazing device if you are willing to give up the screen real estate and S-pen.
All and all I wish you the best of luck in your decision as I do understand the problem you are having and that you want to look after your devices. Just my two cents though. I wish you a good day.

Thanks heaps for the reply. I didnt see it rude at all.
But yeah that's true, I would probably be better off just using one of my old iPods for the gym but wanted to use the Moto X for when I'm out and about. The note 3 is just a bit annoying to keep having to remove from my jeans just to change the song.
I still want to use the note 3 as my main device buy just have the Moto X as my dedicated music player and backup phone. Now I'm kind of doubting if its a good idea. What do you think? I might see how much the iPod sells for then decide from there.

Tough call. With the announcement of Motorola dropping the price to $300, it very well might be worth it if you can justify the price.
I did the opposite of you, switched to the Moto X and kept my Note 2 as a tablet/backup phone.
My Moto X is my daily driver (coming from an S4...). I use it at the gym for music and watch downloaded TV shows (when on cardio machines). I find the X is great at the gym because of the active notifications - just need to hold the notification to see who it is + subject, let go and screen goes off and it's back in my pocket.
Sound isn't quite as good as the S4 with the same headphones - using something like PowerAmp you can adjust the EQ to get desired fidelity.
Swapping Sims will be an issue ....different sizes.....no?

Yeah I saw that deal and was really excited but then I realised that its only for the US. I live here in Australia so it doesnt work for me unfortunately.
The Moto X must be really good because iv'e even heard of people moving from the note 3. Sounds like a great device for a great price.

PowerAmp sounds like a great idea. Now you make me REALLY want to get the Moto X. All those features sound really useful for the gym.

I was actually thinking of getting the Moto G at first, but when looking up prices on eBay, I can get a brand new Moto G for around $250 AUD or I can get a used Moto X with a bad ESN for around the same price (including shipping).

Get Viper4android equalizer and you will have eargasms, works perfect on 4.4 not so well with 4.2

Sorry I didn't read all the replies, but my girlfriend got me some bluetooth headphones last year for Christmas to use on the treadmill. I like listening to music but don't care for armbands or holding my phone in my pockets, so it I put it in the small cubby space on the treadmill. This required a rather long headphones cord to keep from pulling the headphones out of my ears.
I was skeptical about the BT headphones but they work great. There aren't super fancy ones, maybe $50, but they work very well and have player controls built in, as well as a phone functions, but I've never used the phone functions.
It allows me to set the phone down with my water bottle and not worry about it. I use the "gym" (can't really call it that) at my apartment so I just leave it sitting with my jacket (it's a pretty small room), but if you just move it from machine to machine it would work fine, in my opinion.
It would also allow you to keep your stuff on the note and not have to swap devices around etc. Just my thoughts.
Neutron music player is what I use. Best sound quality you will ever get from your phone no questions asked blows poweramp out of the water!

Yeah I really don't want to have to keep swapping data between the two phones so sounds greeat. The Moto X sounds perfect for gym use.
Now my only problem is that on further research, I found out that the Sprint version of the Moto X is CDMA and down here in Aus, we only use GSM. The only Moto X's in my price range are all Sprint versions with a Bad ESN. Im wondering if I am better off:
1) Buying the Moto x and not being able to use it as a backup phone (which isn't really important but would be a very nice option). Unless there is a way to use it here?
2) Buy a brand new Moto G
3) Buy a second hand HTC One with a bad speaker (needs replacing)
EDIT: 4) Buying a Moto X that has a smashed screen and wont turn on, hoping to fix it
All of these options fit my budget but really not sure on which one would be best. Anyones thoughts would be greatly appreciated
3 of those 4 options sound terrible. LOL. Get a new Moto g then. The only sensible option of the 4 you listed.

Or, you could save a tonne of money and just buy a good Bluetooth headset dongle like the Sony SBH-50, pair it to the Note 3, plug in your favourite pair of headphones, and get the best of all worlds. A small OLED screen for track info and caller id, volume,play/pause/next buttons, and a mic. It's under $80 CDN, so definitely in your price range. Lol.
A separate $300+ device to keep in sync and swapping SIM cards all the time? Is that really worth the hassle?

I was implying buying a pair of bluetooth headphones instead of a new device. Pair the headphones with the Note you already have and just don't keep it in your pocket. Then you don't have to swap devices, and you can listen to music, etc. Spend $100 on a nice pair of headphones instead of a few hundred on a phone that you'll only use for music.

Oh okay, yeah I get it. It does sound like a better alternative but just a little hard giving up having two devices. If I really can't find one at a good price, then I'll just have to settle for a pair of Bluetooth headphones. I'll see how much the iPod sells for and see from there I guess but really do appreciate the replies

Try something like the LG HBS-700. They are often on slickdeals for $40 or so shipped. Or here http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronic...TF8&qid=1390925651&sr=1-2&keywords=LG+HBS-700 (slightly different model)
However if you're doing a lot of running you may prefer the type that twist around your ears
The ones my girlfriend got me for Christmas are these, or very similar to these: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Accessories-SHB6017-28-Bluetooth/dp/B00560YMPI
She got them last year on sale, so I know she didn't pay that much for them.
They work very well because they do clip on to each ear and there is only a cord between them, so it doesn't bounce around on your head when you move or run. Sound quality is great and the battery lasts for quite a while. I use it for an hour or two on days when I work out and usually charge twice a week. Charges to full in about an hour, I believe.
