All credit goes to Fibs for finding out the root method.
Original forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771470
Tested on NE5 with Neo with Windows 7 & 8.
Important!: This requires that the Tizen SDK already be installed on your computer. Instructions to install SDK Here. Before rooting make sure your Gear is backed up through Gear manager.
To flash NE5 download from Sammobile. Make sure that you are logged in to download it. Flashing NE5 over ND8 or NDD won't hurt it. Just flash through Odin.
Once you are on NE5 please download Fibs rootf_s and flash through Odin
R381XXU0BNE5rootfs_root.tar. Remove the .md5 at the end so the file is a .tar file. (Needs Gear 2 NEO R381XXU0BNE5 installed)
How to do it?
1. Open command prompt
2. Navigate to where the Tizen SDK is installed in command prompt
3. Run command sdb root on (should tell you that you are in root mode)
Congratulations you have root access.
If you get permission denied then make sure you flashed Fibs rootf_s file in Odin.
**you can check root by running the command below**
Code:
sdb shell
sh-3.2# whoami
root
\\it should tell you root\\
If it tells you that you are a developer run the code below
Code:
sdb root on
\\switched to 'root' account mode\\
sdb shell
sh-3.2# whoami
root
What is this good for?
Removing stock sounds *Be careful*
sdb root on
sdb shell mount -o remount,rw /
sdb shell rm /opt/share/settings/Alerts/ filename.ogg (for removing ringtones change Alerts to Ringtones)
sdb shell mount -o remount,ro / **Make sure that you remount to read only before restarting**
reboot watch
Custom ringtones/alerts:
sdb root on
sdb push your_ringtone.ogg /opt/share/settings/Alerts/ (pushing ringtones change Alerts to Ringtones
reboot watch
Keep in mind free diskspace is 80MB for /opt/ don't fill it up!
If something goes wrong you can always reflash your firmware, factory reset the device and everything is back to normal.
Thanx for the info!

At this point it allows us to change sounds for notifications/ringtones as well as I'm in the process of seeing what apps I can pull off my watch. So its almost there lol

Lol I'm in the process of trying to create a script that will allow for auto rooting. Something like Chainfire's Superuser. Dumb Tizen. That way it can be side loaded and avoid computer.

will this allow us to use "unapproved" phones for connection? like an iphone (one of the benefits of rooting the original galaxy gear)?
Thanks. Works great.

You can already use it with the iPhone but you won't be able to use features like s-voice. It will work as a Bluetooth headset. You should still get notifications, make calls, and everything that does not require Samsung though

iPhone 5. I do also have access to a Samsung Stratosphere II, but it is running OS 4.0.4 with no way to root or update that I've been able to find. So I'm not able to install Gear Manager on that.

Okay yeah you would need to set it up first. Hmm I think that once someone gets perm root without the use of a command prompt they should be able to get you hooked up. Until that time frame I don't think there is a way unless you connect to a phone that is compatible
Sound & Vibrate
I would like the ability to have the watch both vibrate and play a ringtone. I'm sure rooting will eventually get that accomplished.

Yes. I am working on the vibrate files right now so that we can change the method of vibration. Once that is done I will move to getting them to play at the same time.

Hey guys...pretty big noob here,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S i1900 and wanted to get Cyanogen on there,
I had a custom rom(don't remember which one) with Gingerbread installed for quite some time, but i wanted something new.
I followed the instructions from the cyanogenWiki and wanted to install
the ClockMod Recovery.
\\instructions below
Power off the Samsung Galaxy S and connect the microUSB to the computer but not the Samsung Galaxy S.
Boot the Samsung Galaxy S into download mode by holding down Home & Volume Down while connecting the microUSB to it.
Untar hardcore's kernel into the Heimdall directory.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following command from the Heimdall directory:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
\\I followed all the instructions above and get the following error
Initialising connection...
Detecting device...
Claiming interface...
Setting up interface...
Checking if protocol is initialised...
Protocol is not initialised...
Initialising protocol...
Handshaking with Loke...
ERROR: Failed to open file "zImage"
\\Then trying to run again:
Initialising connection...
Detecting device...
Claiming interface...
Setting up interface...
Checking if protocol is initialised...
Protocol is initialised.
ERROR: Failed to open file "ZImage"
-------------------------------------
If i reboot without download moade i'm stuck in cell to computer mode and odin doesn't seem to detect anything (tried with 1.7 and 1.85)
Any idea how/if I can fix this??

I find it less disturbing to use heimdall-frontend while im on linux.
If you dont have it installed i would recommend you to use that if you are not to familiar with flashing.
Can you still get you'r phone in download mode?
if so you might have to grab a stock firmware and flash back to stock before re-trying (that is if you cant boot/read data from the partitions)
you can grab a binary file installer from heimdalls website and launch it by typing heimdall-frontend in a terminal window.
Hope this help you!
Edit: you can grab a stock rom from http://samfirmware.com
Edit 2: h***, you have allready fixed it, good for you!

Is anyone else able to copy TWRP nandroid backups from the internal storage and onto a computer?
I've tried doing it through USB and through ES file explorer, it tells me I don't have permission or something like that.
Any ideas?

WOW . This works . for me , I was getting "Unable to chmod /data/media/TWRP: Operation not permitted"
Took the control using su and then executed the command.
10|[email protected]:/ $ su
su
[email protected]:/ # chmod -R 777 /data/media/TWRP
chmod -R 777 /data/media/TWRP

Use es file explorer and either copy the directory to another directory or create a zip of backup directory and put it in your downloads directory.
Dear All,
I'm also one of the user who use the Optimus 4X HD..... I always wanted easy solution to root the phone or unlock the boot loader..
Here I made very simple guide to Root, install Custom OS or Recovery...
Rooting Steps
1. Preferred adb tool on the computer, and have installed adb driver. If your not able to find the driver install the MOBOGENIE on your computer it will automatically install the driver.. Once the driver installed restart the computer..
2 Open the link download the rooting tool based on your computer http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ download the Windows version or Mac depends on the user..
Once Cydiimpactor downloaded extract the folder..
3 on your phone Settings - Developer option - Enable the USB debugging
4 on your phone Settings - Security - Allow unknown source file install
5 Connect your phone to Computer, using usb cable.. (Wait for 30 seconds)
6 Open the extracted Cydiaimpactore and double click the Impactor file..
7 Cydia Impactor will open, you will find option called Start click on start.. it will root your phone in 20seconds..
8 Reboot your phone, install the Root checker apk from google play store.. Verity the root access.
Flashing CWM or TWRP
1 Open the http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager Find the LG Optimus 4X HD
2 Download the CWM or TWRP on your computer
3 Rename the downloaded the file into "" recovery.img ""
4 Copy the "" recovery.img "" into your phone internal memory
5 Install the Rom manger from Google play sotre
6 Turn Flash CWM touch, it will start downloading and flash the same..
7 Now you have CWM recovery on your phone..
Installing 4.4.2 update..
1 Very clear steps written over link with update file..
http://true-android.blogspot.in/2014/01/update-lg-optimus-4x-hd-to-android-442.html
http://true-android.blogspot.in/2014/01/android-442-kitkat-mokee-rom-for-lg_3.html
If you wish BUY me a beer & click THANKS button to support my work..
@jacksparao, has this been tested?
What's the reason behind downloading and putting recovery.img to phone then isn't using it?

Dear Friends,
Its very sad my thread has been closed.. I was in business trip not able to support you all..
Any way.. thanks..
I'm trying to find (but so far have failed) a modem.bin from an AT&T (i537) S4A running MF3. If someone out there has a rooted S4A running MF3, and if you have a couple of minutes to spare to extract a modem.bin, I'd really appreciate it...
Here's how to extract it. It can be done directly on the phone with a terminal emulater (e.g. Android Terminal Emulator or VX ConnectBot) or from an ADB shell if you already have one set up:
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/mdm of=/sdcard/mf3-modem.bin bs=4096
Just be sure not to swap the "if" and "of"!
Thank you!!

Here's the link for the MF3 modem.bin using the command above as requested. I've also got a zip file containing MF3 modem.bin and NON-HLOS.bin that I had extracted earlier. You might want to take a look and make sure that the modem.bin files are the same, I would hate to provide something that screws up your phone. I'm not sure what commands I used to extract those files, but hopefully it's useful as well.
Thanks, that was quick!
My i537 had no trouble recognizing the modem.bin (and the two separate files were the same).

Were you able to flash the modem and get everything working properly? I had the zip lying around, but I've never had a reason to try to flash it.

Yes, it flashed just fine and was recognized as MF3 by the baseband processor, and it seems to work normally. It didn't solve the underlying issue I was trying to troubleshoot (msm_hsic_host is forcing a permanent kernel wakelock w/both NC9 and NE3), but I'm not even sure the baseband software is the problem....
Thanks again for the help.

I just got a Macbook Pro and have not had a chance to try Heimdall yet. I know Note 4 and S5 users have been experiencing the same errors under Linux (and I believe OS X as well). Heimdall doesn't like something about newer Samsung devices.
I might give it a shot again soon. If I do, I will update my Linux Heimdall post, which documents some of the patches I tried.
