getting to T-Mo KitKat OTA or RUU ? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on ARHD 31.6 which is Android 4.3.
Would like to be KitKat.
Can I get to the T-Mo OTA from here somehow, or am I better off with:

To update my One (that is S-OFF), I relocked the bootloader and loaded that RUU which put it on 4.3, then let it do the OTAs that brought it first to 4.4.2/Sense 5.5, then the OTA to 4.4.2/Sense 6.0. Then I re-unlocked and rooted it. I run the stock T-Mobile ROM that is rooted and using the ElementalX 14.2 kernel.

no need to relock when you're s-off.
can you copy/paste command prompt/terminal output of the commands you ran.
PS: did you check MD5 of the download?

is there some reason I'd have to adb or fastboot rather than TWRP to flash this RUU?

I've never gotten an RUU to work while the bootloader is unlocked, on any HTC phone I've had. Relocking the bootloader the RUU works as designed. Also, the OTA updates from T-Mobile will not install with an unlocked bootloader.

[Q] HTC One returning to stock questions

Hello everyone,
I'm pretty new to whole rooting and stuff so excuse me for my probably noob and dumb questions..
I own a HTC One for a year now I believe, and I wanted to give the rooting thing a try.
So I unlocked my One, and installed a custom recovery (TWRP).
I didn't do alot with it, had a stock version af android with sense, no custom roms or anything, only used root acces for the cerberus app.
The other day HTC released a new version af the stock software, I believe 4.19.401.11.
Since I'm not doing anything with the unlocked phone I want to get it back to stock again.
I am on android 4.4 with sense 5.5 now, android version 4.19.401.9, hboot 1.56
My fastboot getvar all:

I found this guide to get back to stock: http://www.htc1guru.com/guides/return-stock-guide/
There it works with S-off, with rumrunner to get s-off but I read that rumrunner wont work with hboot 1.56, sadly I have 1.56..
In that guide you have to get s-off, downgrade to another hboot (1.44) and use a RUU with android version 1.28 or 1.29 to go to stock again.
But, in another topic I found this:

That is an RUU for exactly my phone I believe.
So now my question: Can I run that RUU, in the way that is written in the htc1guru return to stock guide (via fastboot) and go back to stock again? With a (re)locked bootloader, and receive OTA updates again?
I hope my question and all the information I have given is clear! If not feel free to ask me below!

You are still essentially stock, you will only need to flash the stock recovery from 4.19.401.9 , unfortunately I did a quick google and couldn't fine one. If you have the OTA or ruu you can extract the recovery.img to use. unlocked bootloader and root is fine. Then when the version .11 is released by your carrier you will be able to install.

Hi mb_guy, i have a twrp backup which i can restore, which could allow me to return to stock with superuser root access.
If i flash a stock recovery, will it remove my root access and receive future OTA? (if i am not mistaken, i tried flashing the stock recovery, and relocked the bootloader, but i just can't remove the superuser app :crying: )

I have found the RUU of 4.19.401.9 (it is in the link i posted in my opening post, from androidruu).
I found a guide to extract the rom.zip from a RUU file, but it wont work for me. Can someone extract the rom.zip file for me and upload it here?
Only flashing the recovery file sounds like loads easyer than the entire guide i found by htc1guru.
And what if i want to re-lock the bootloader and get rid of root? Can i do that too?

You don't want rom.zip you want recovery.img it's likely in the firmware folder. You should be able to unroot from twrp. You can re lock the boot loader, but it will say relocked, I would just leave it unlocked.

Ok it's easy
Retry run that ruu exe file goto temp folder in c-Windows- user- app data - local - temp find in some folders you will get it but it's not worth it as it's encrypted so next time you will ask how to decrypt it
So better Google HTC One stock recovery download it flash it
2 if you want unroot mostly super user or rooting apps have methods in their settings try them
3 locking boot loader is last step after recovery flash
Unlocked bootloader not prevent future OTA
So no need for relock bootloader
OTA need stock recovery + unmodified system

You can't get the recovery from the rom.zip as the zip is encrypted.
I downloaded the 4.19.401.9 firmware.zip and extracted the recovery from it.
Here is the recovery : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htcone/files/Recovery/4.19.401.9/recovery.img/download
Now you have two options:
With the RUU that you have
1. relocked the bootloader
2. run the RUU to go back to stock
3. do the OTA
With the recovery only
1. fastboot flash the recovery
2. not necessary to remove the SuperSU (but you will lose root after OTA)
3. or remove root (open the SuperSU app, - settings - scroll down - select Full unroot if you think it's better to remove it before OTA
4. do the OTA
Remove root by flashing stock firmware
Hi guys, i did some searching and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773659
according to this thread if i flash in stock firmware it will remove the root?
So my question is, if i restore my phone to the rooted stock state > relock the bootloader > flash in the stock firmware, in theory it should return the phone to stock state right? just to confirm if the above thread works for the HTC One
Thanks.

Thank you very much!
When I unlocked, rooted and installed the TWRP recovery I lost the stock flashlight app and calculator app and some others.
With the RUU i will get them back i think, with the other option, flashing recovery it wont return right? And after the OTA?
Is there any risk in running that RUU?

You should have said this earlier. When you lost the some apps that reside in data/preload folder means you don't already have a proper stock, OTA most probably will be a fail attempt.
Flashing the recovery alone cannot guarantee a successful OTA update due to those missing apps.
The best option that you have is run the RUU unless you can find any nandroid backup for the current ROM.
For me, I will choose to run the RUU as that is always the best option when it is the right RUU for your device.
Make a backup to PC all your storage content in case you lose them by running the RUU (but unlikely you will lose them)
With the RUU ... the procedure is :
1- in fastboot mode - relock the bootloader : run command fastboot oem lock
2- in fastboot mode - flash/run/double click the RUU; follow the updater instruction - next, update, bla, bla, bla until it finish

If it is the firmware.zip alone, no .. it won't remove your root app.
When people say stock firmware it is always mean stock ROM.
To remove root, just simply select Full unroot in SuperSU settings. (asumming your rooting app is SuperSU as shown in that thread).
Thanks everyone for their help!
Everything worked fine, I'm back to stock now and just updated the OTA !

here's the only RUU I can find for your phone
http://flyhalf205.com/?dir=RUU/m7vzw
you flash them with fastboot
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
fastboot flash zip rom.zip << yes two times
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Just make sure you name the RUU rom.zip not rom.zip.zip and it's in the same folder as fastboot
Don't lock your bootloader and Don't go s=on
just flash the PN07IMG_M7_WL_JB_50_VZW_2.10.605.1_DECRYPT.zip
and take all the OTA updates you want .. then flash custom recovery and re- root your phone if you want.

[Q] Having Trouble Going Back to Stock

I have been at this for a couple of days, and have had no luck. So here I am posting for help.
I need to revert a HTC One m7 Sprint to stock for my cousin who bought the phone rooted on swappa. She wants it stock so she can get OTA updates. By stock I mean no tampered flag, no unlocked flag and OTA updates, stock rom and recovery. And I'm having trouble doing so, I have no experience with anything other than Nexus devices.
Current status:
1) Flashed this (Sprint-ONE-3.04.651.2-De-Odex.zip) to the phone using CWM
2) Relocked bootloader (I relocked bootloader so I can use official ROM update utility tool to install (Sprint_HTC_One_m7wls_3_04_651_2_RUU)) on phone.
3) Phone won't boot into ROM (can't get past bootloader)
4) Now phone won't even boot into recovery
>>>fastboot oem boot
...
(bootloader) Start Verify: 3
(bootloader) Boot/Recovery signature checking...

(bootloader) [ERR] Boot/Recovery image signature checking failed!

I'm guessing that because S=ON it's checking signature of recovery and failing because recovery isn't stock. If this was a nexus I could just flash the official recovery.img but alas it's not, so I don't know where to turn.
Please tell me how to best proceed.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Code:
fastboot getvar all
Please edit out serial + imei before posting thanks.
You will need s-off to go back to stock 100% with LOCKED bootloader, but if you just want ota's that's possible with s-on you just need Stock recovery and Rom. But best you'll get the bootloader is RELOCKED with s-on.
Also it won't boot custom software when relocked. That's why your recovery and Rom won't boot

Unlock your bootloader, and use CWM to install this Rom. In Aroma installer choose YES to Stock Recovery and Radio. NO to Root.
Reboot the phone to take ota's after you've updated relock the bootloader .
I notice the version main is missing from your getvar also. Installing the ota's may fix it but I should be able to help you with that before you do anything else. It will require the bootloader to be relocked so better to do it now if you want to.
---------- Post added at 09:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:07 PM ----------
Actually it would be better to unlock, flash the Rom first then relock and flash the firmware to restore the version main.
Then reboot and your done
http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One/651/
You can get the firmware here. Download it and rename the file to firmware.zip and put it in your fastboot folder. Then after unlocking and flashing the reset.zip. relock and flash the firmware.
Reboot the phone to the bootloader and Connect fastbootusb. Now open your Fastboot command line and type
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
< --- case sensitive.
The phone will reboot to a black screen with a Silver HTC LOGO. This is RUU mode. Now we're going to flash the firmware.
Code:
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
The first flash will be short. It's just a preupdate preparing the hboot for the new firmware. So we need to do the same command again.
Code:
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
The second flash will take a little longer and this time it will flash the full firmware. The progress bar on the phone screen will not reach 100% this is normal as long as the command window has completed its output the flash is done.
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
You should now see your new firmware version main in the bootloader and getvar. And that's it reboot and take ota's.

The reset zip will restore your stock Rom and recovery and Radio. But you have to Install it with a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. Which requires the bootloader to be unlocked. Once it's installed you can take ota updates. The bootloader does not need to be locked for ota's.
Then you can relock and flash the firmware.zip which will restore your version main information. Which is missing. Caused by a recovery bug that wipes that info from the misc partition. Installing the ota updates may fix it. Or you can manually flash the firmware to fix it before you take the ota updates. :good:

Oh sorry when you said reset.zip I thought it was something totally new but you were referring to "Guru_Reset_M7_Sprint_3.04.651.2.zip". My bad.
So I followed the steps above including flashing firmware.zip. Now fastboot getvar all shows main having a version. Currently apps are being downloaded, and I will try to install the ota update after they are all done. And there is stock recovery, I confirmed by launching into recovery from fastboot after flashing "Guru_Reset_M7_Sprint_3.04.651.2.zip" in CWM, and the orange triangle with exclamation point showed up.
Thank you for helping me out!
Also one last thing, to clean everything up, how do I reset the tampered flag? And so it shows locked instead of relocked?
EDIT: First OTA was successful!

You will have to downgrade the phone again yes. And s-off is not so easy to accomplish. Unless you pay $25 for Sunshine app.
If you wanted to return it for warranty or sell the device as un-tampered stock. You can use firewater for or rumrunner to s-off both methods are free exploits but are not so simple to get them to work you will need to unlock flash a custom recovery make a nandroid of the stock rom, then root the device again. Probably need to flash a few different roms + Kernels to find something that works.
There's the possibility that neither will work and your only choice then would be Sunshine.
If there's no warranty and your friend just wants stock with ota updates I would just leave it as relocked unless your prepared to put the work in

Need to get stock recovery back on modified GPE

I bought HTC one M7 unlocked from HTC.com when it came out. Last year I modified it to get rid of sense and made it "google play edition". I discovered I can't get OTA updates though due to the presence of stock recovery though.
Question: How can I get rid of TWRP and get back to stock recovery? fastboot getvar version-main returns empty

If its 4.4.4 (Build KTU84P) you need the 4.09.1700.1 stock recovery to install the 5.0.1 update (LRX22C). You'll then receive another notification to install the 5.1 update (LMY47O)

So it was originally a developer edition phone right?
First download this ruu and save it in the same folder you have fastboot and adb on your computer. Rename the file "ruu" so it will be easier in the command prompt.
Download this tool and save it on the root of your phone storage
Boot in twrp recovery, select "install" and choose "Guru_Bootloader_Reset_1.0.zip" and then "swipe to install"
Follow instruction of the installer to remove tampered from the bootloader. Don't set the bootloader to locked or re-locked. Keep it unlocked as Developer edition phones are factory bootloader unlocked.
Then boot the phone in bootloader / fastboot usb mode
Confirm that tampered is gone and bootloader is still unlocked.
With the phone still in bootloader, open a command window from your adb/fastboot folder
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
phone will reboot in ruu mode, a black screen with silver htc logo
Code:
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
first flash will report "failed, flush image again immediately, so do the same command again:
Code:
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
this one will report "flashed successfully"
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
If you want to turn the bootloader back to S-ON for warranty do this command as the final step:
Code:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
fastboot reboot-bootloader
and confirm phone is S-ON, Unlocked, no tampered flag.
And a big warning here, do not perform this if you are using a windows 8/8.1 computer as the ruu will downgrade hboot to 1.44. hboot 1.44 is not compatible with windows 8.1 and you'll loose fastboot connectivity after the first "fastboot flash zip ruu.zip" and you'll be stuck in ruu mode. Use windows 7. XP, Linux (Ubuntu for example) or use MacOS

Question though: My android version is 4.4.4, and the RUU you linked is 5.0 - does it matter? Won't I run into a "boot loop"?

Wow this was simple! I'm now running stock Jelly Bean, just like a new phone two years ago
I have still left S-OFF and Unlocked - will compare these settings to how my wife's phone is, and then either leave it unlocked or locked to match hers. And then will do S-ON.
Thank you kind sir!

Dev edition are unlocked from factory
Security is set to S-ON from factory
anyway its to late to set the bootloader to locked because the tool to set this requires a custom recovery.

Thats right, I forgot about this. fasboot boot recovery.img will work fine since the phone is now on hboot 1.44, but anayway as I said, dev edition are bootloader unlock from the factory so setting it Locked will be suspicious

Well I checked wife's phone, and it is "LOCKED" to my surprise. So I have to do the same to match those settings. I bought this phone within few days when it became available, and it may not have been the developer edition I initially thought. It must have been the "international" version rather than the "unlocked developer" version.

The international version is MID PN0710000, version base is .401 e.g. 7.19.401.2 and BS_US001 is not a CID for international version...
There a method to know what your phone was originally. Your original CID/MID and firmware/software version are stored in the MFG partition of your phone. If you can dump this partition to your computer and send it to me, we can determine for sure what it was originally. Unfortnately this partition also include your IMEI and Serial number which should be kept private, if you are ok with sharing this with me here how to proceed:
Boot twrp recovery without flashing it to your phone:
reboot your phone in bootloader / fastboot usb mode
Code:
fastboot boot [URL="https://dl.twrp.me/m7/twrp-2.8.6.0-m7.img.html"]twrp-2.8.6.0-m7.img[/URL]
once booted in twrp main menu, type these commands in the command window:
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 of=/sdcard/mmcblk0p6_bakup.img
exit
exit
Then reboot the phone normally, go to "My Computer --> HTC One --> Internal Storage. You'll find the mmcblk0p6_backup.img file. send it to me via PM only

[Q] Upgrading Firmware and stuff

Hey XDA.
I have an HTC M7 currently with ARHD.
How I did it since now, was to unlock bootloader, get a custom recovery and then flash the custom ROM zip.
Now I found out that I should flash base(?) firmware zips and then then Custom ROMs and Radio and stuff like that.
After reading all that I got a little confused.
Can somebody explain me what I should do?

Weather you need to update firmware or not depends on your current firmware. And version of the ROM, I assume your running the latest 92 lollipop Rom.
Can you please post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
please remove your IMEI and Serial number before posting. :good:
Then we can see if you need to update your firmware. And which firmware you need.

Your firmware is very old. But maybe not such a bad thing at the moment. Have you ever considered going s-off. If you have it would be better to do it now before updating your firmware.
Your currently on hboot 1.55 which you can s-off for free using rumrunner. Once you update past 1.55 your only option for s-off will be Sunshine which costs $25 to use. Also updating firmware while s-off is much easier since you won't need to relock your bootloader.
Your current firmware base is for jellybean. So you will probably have some problems with the latest lollipop roms. You should update to get the most out of your device and the latest roms. But I do recommend going s-off first. :good:

Yeah that's what I would recommend. S-off first
Then you can find all firmware zips for your device here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=32777
You will need to flash
4.19.401.11.zip
5.11.401.10.zip
6.09.401.12.zip
7.19.401.22.zip
If you flash them with s-off they will not wipe anything from your device. Once you have the latest firmware you can use any lollipop Rom you choose :good:

Do I flash the firmwares through recovery or through fastboot?
And do I flash them after another or do I have to flash one and start the phone and then flash the next one?

Flash them with fastboot. Put the firmware files in your fastboot folder. And connect fastboot usb in the bootloader.
With s-off flash with these commands.
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
The device will boot to a black screen with silver HTC logo. This is ruu mode.
Code:
fastboot flash zip name_of_firmware.zip
The first flash is just a pre update. Repeat the same command.
Code:
fastboot flash zip name_of_firmware.zip
The second flash will flash the firmware. The progress bar on the screen will not reach 100% that's normal. When the flash is complete
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Done.
You don't need to reboot to Android just repeat the procedure again for the next zip strait from the bootloader.
The firmware updates will include the stock recovery. So you will need to flash TWRP or CWM when your done.
If you decide to update wile s-on the procedure is the same. But you will need to 're-lock your bootloader before you start.
Code:
fastboot oem lock
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Be aware though when you unlock the bootloader it will wipe your devices internal storage.

When I flash/update the Firmware, does it change my current ROM in a way, that I need to reflash it?

Very good question I'm glad you asked. I missed this in my last post. The firmware will also replace the stock boot.img. only a problem if your running a custom Rom. In which case you don't need to reflash the entire Rom. You can extract the boot.img from the rom zip and flash it with fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Did you manage to s-off? With s-off you can also flash custom firmware. So you could just delete the boot.img and recovery.img from each of the firmware.zips then you can just flash the firmware without complications. :good:

Will this work with Hboot 1.57, I tried with insertcoin 5.0.2 and ARHD 4.4.2? Can I downgrade Hboot with S-ON by flashing older RUU signed by HTC or 3rd pary authority?

Sorry confused you with a different user. Previous reply deleted.
No rumrunner will not work on hboot 1.57. Only sunshine app works to s-off hboot 1.57. If you mean will the rom work then yes it should but it's based on a much older firmware. Downgrading firmware is not possible with s-on. So you can either upgrade your firmware and use ARHD 92 which is a lollipop rom. Or keep your existing firmware and flash ARHD 84 which is a kitkat rom
Because your s-on upgrading firmware will require you to lock the bootloader. Be advised that unlocking again will wipe your devices internal memory. So backup everything you want to keep to your pc before you start. If you want to upgrade to lollipop there are plenty of RUUs for lollipop there should be one you can use depending on your current OS version. Upgrading via ruu will also require you to relock the bootloader.
