Hi
I currently have a Moto G and I like it alot apart from the camera and the sound quality via headphones. I had the Galaxy Note 2 before this it was way better on clarity and low end. I understand that it's a much more expensive phone so not really a fair comparison.
I just wondered if anybody had any experience with the Moto G and Moto X and if the X has noticeably better sound quality of the two?
Thanks,
I like the sound quality of my headphones on the moto x. I have my old sgs4 headphones but I used my old apple headphones as well and sound quality on the s4 headphones are better than the apple headphones. But it would sound a lot better with viper4android as well

Thanks for the insight.
Anyone else with an opinion?
I do really like my Motorola headphones, but I'm now using my old Samsung ones, as they seem to have clearer sound quality.
And yes, you definitely should install Viper4Android, it's just the best.

Just looking for a rough guess as to how well the X does Sound Processing for music. GSMArena doesnt have their tests up yet so I was looking to find out from people here if it is clean and loud before I go and put money on this phone.
So anybody with an X at this point, what's your opinion? Distorted? Clean? Let me know!
Thanks!
I just picked up the Droid Maxx today, and I bet the sound quality is the same as the Moto X.
Overall, it's very clear and comparable to my Galaxy Nexus. I've been listening to my V-Moda M100s, and I haven't noticed any distortion. The sound seems little treble heavy compared to my Nexus 7 or my Galaxy Nexus, but I'm not quite sure yet.
The thing that bugs me, is that the built in EQ is locked in on certain presets - you can't actually change different EQ bands.

I love PowerAmp. Sadly though, it's not integrated into Google Music. I found a system wide EQ program I'm using for now.
Better than my N4 with my Monoproce 8525's
Great sound quality for me... Really clean and well balanced...

I got my Moto X recently and I hear a step down in audio quality from the original Droid Razr or any of my other devices. Music sounds heavily smeared and bass and treble sound quite off. Am I the only one to notice this? I'm not really sure what dac chip it uses, but its certainly not the same wolfson (or ericsson?) in the Razr and not even up to par with Realtek on my desktop. It even has a lot of hiss! :crying: This concerns me a lot because I use my phone to listen to music away from home.
I keep the audio effects off and own a fairly high-end pair of headphones. I've compared audio across 3 headphones and the result is the same.
You should get it replaced. My sound is clear and I get great performance out of the speaker. Almost all comments I've seen are extremely positive regarding the speaker performance. Sounds like you have a defective speaker.

According to the iFixit page: it's using the Qualcomm WCD9310 codec and passes through the TI TMS320C55. I don't know what that fully means, but if my Gnex is anything to go by: TI isn't bad at their DSP work. What sucks right now is that Faux123's app FauxSound doesn't support the WCD9310 officially so it'll be up to kernel devs to facilitate that.

Honestly it doesn't sound defective but it sounds cheap. I don't expect most people to hear it, but I am a bit of an audiophile. I was also wondering if anyone has used portable dacs with their phones or which dacs are confirmed to work with android. This sounds like a good solution to me and an opportunity to get better audio on my computer as well.

I listened to my friends moto x hip hop music with Sennheiser ie8 and it sounded OK. At least the bass was deep enough. Not much help here but just wanna tell you that I feel your pain. I had the Nexus 5 and the bass was terrible imo and not low enough. Immediately sold it for a htc one instead.
My Moto X sound looks incredible, at least for me coming from an S3. A tip is to use the built-in audio config that is seen on Settings > Sound > Sound effects, check if it helps
I have had no audio issues with my Moto X at all. No audio "hiss" at all like what OP is experiencing.
I haven't taken the time to try my Moto X with any of my DACs.

I think it might be somehow defective. I get zero hiss.
Let's get back to the topic here guys and cease with the bickering

I thought you were talking about the speaker aswell. Tried with the headphone today and I wasn't very impressed either. Although I'm out of headphones and I had to try with the one that came with it, which seems very poor.
I currently own an HTC ONE GPE and trying to make a switch to Moto X. HTC ONE is considered to have the best DAC and best audio volume according to GSM arena. My only worry is audio volume and quality via headphones on Moto X ?
I have done tons of research on the topic and there seems to be mixed reviews on audio quality.
What do you guys say -
Is the audio volume loud enough ? Is it louder or par with iphones ?
Is the sound quality comparable with HTC One ?
Do i need to use low impedance or high impedance headphones ?
Or should i use bluetooth headphones like jay bluebird earbuds ?
Let me know
I thought the moto x had terrible audio quality when I got it but turns out the 3d EQ setting is on my default . to me it made it sound like crap. Turn it off and walla

Not sure about the iPhone 5, but my Moto X speaker puts my wifes 4s to shame. And I just use my Samsung ear buds... They sound pretty good to me.

QFT, all my friends and family were surprised on how loud it was. You won't be disappointed by the speakers performance. It was another reason I chose it over the Nexus 5.

Definitely louder and richer sound on the speaker than my Nexus 4. However it doesn't sound as good through earphones, at least from what I remember. That could be equalizer settings though.
I had the HTC One Mini, and Iphone 5s before I got the MotoX. The Moto X sound is way louder then both of those. I really notice when I put the Moto X on its back while playing music, it makes it louder. This is with WinAmp as the player. I really like the Moto X for playing music. No complaints here.
My thoughts after a week..
Call quality is good. Nothing to necessarily boast about, but no negatives to report. 75% more than loud enough for me, no complaints about quality on my end.
Speaker sounds good, again nothing to really boast about. I usually don't listen to music from the speaker - podcasts, occasional youtube - so I can't really offer up any detailed diagnosis. Definitely sounds better coming from my Galaxy Nexus, and more than suitable for my daily use.
As for headphones.. I have a decent pair and a crummy pair and they sound comparable with my other devices and music. I mainly use my Jaybird Bluebud headphones and absolutely zero complaints. 16 Ohms* for reference, and they sound great, but I haven't heard any unusual reports about headphone consistency anyways so whatever you have should translate in quality (source consistency provided). Bluetooth issues and 4.4+ seem to be more consistent with speaker setups / car use but don't quote me, but I've had no bluetooth issue between 4.2.2 and 4.4 and my headphones. Can't comment on other bluetooth compatible issues.
Can't find anything in this department to fault the device on, personally, but YMMV, of course :good:

lower impedence is generally regarded as a good thing in iems but for reference;

Hi guys , thinking to buy Moto X 2014, how you can compare the sound quality(music) with galaxy s5, HTC one m8,? Is it better, I'm music lover so whats your opinion, is sound quality good in moto x?
Sent from my XT1033 using XDA Free mobile app
I can't tell you how the speaker compare, but on it's own it's pretty louder and clear with a small distortion at loudest volume. The headphone output on the other hand is excellent, excellent clarity and very smooth sounding. It have enough amping power (in term of phones headphone output) to drive my full size headphones with adequate bass punch. It's the first phones headphone quality I'm really happy with since wolfson dac from Samsung Galaxy S.
Does anyone else not like the quality of the speakers? When playing games, the speakers sound muddled. The speaker in the Galaxy S4 sounds clearer. Are there any settings I can change to make things sound better, or are the speakers just poor?
Try to disable equalizer in sound settings

I think the speaker on the Droid Turbo totally sucks.
On the higher frequencys, it sounds really cheap.
I think the Moto X 2014's speaker is much much better.
As someone who owns a myriad of high end audio equipment and has about 35gb of FLAC music on his Turbo...
The speaker is actually pretty loud for media. Turn off the EQ like mentioned and it sounds just fine with MX Player and movies. Highs sound just like any other phone speaker which means they're not great but either is the low end. Coming from the One M7 this is a slight downgrade in quality but I've found that it's just as loud.
As many have pointed out, in calls the phone is too low. That's simply software tweaking, though.
As for the headphone jack, it actually puts out more power than the S5 and Moto X (2014) in terms of raw measurable current. With that being said it doesn't mean its any louder or clearer. With PowerAmp I'm content with the headphone jack. It powers my custom molded Triple Fi Pro's with ample headroom to spare. It also powers my Audio Technica headphones just fine.
Headphone SQ is right on par with any other stock software. Still way behind a phone with Viper Audio but I'm still hopeful it will come to us eventually

Im not getting the same results over here. :crying:
If I play the "Orion" and the "Moto" ringtones on the Moto X 2014 and on the Droid Turbo, they sound MUCH better on the Moto X 2014.
The Moto Assist, as the ringtones, screeches much more on the Droid Turbo than on the Moto X 2014.
Im really disappointed with that, because one of the main reasons that I bought this phone (as many) is the Moto Assist.
Listening some screeches at every ringtone, music, alarm, or Moto Assist use is painful.
I already went to a mall, and tested if the problem is on my unit, but I discovered that its a model issue. Already tried to turn off the audio EQ. It gets a bit better, but the screeches remain.
All the other stuff (screen, performance, battery life, etc) around this smartphone is perfect.

I resolve the crackling issue.
Just had to turn down the volume settings (they were at max), and the speaker stopped crackling.
I think they used a worse quality speaker on the Droid Turbo than on the Moto X 2014.
Yeah, it's never good to have a speaker at full blast whether a tiny phone speaker or high end monitor.
I know you mentioned that you tested other units but I'd still try another unit. Over on the AC forums there have been people complaining about the speaker and a new unit resolved the issue.
Software won't fix a hardware problem but I do think a lot of our small quirks will be fixed in future updates.
A bit off topic, but when using the speakers during a phone call, the other person can always hear an echo of their voice. This never happened on my Galaxy Nexus. Is this a problem that can be fixed via software or no?
My speaker on my turbo sounds just fine and I'm a bit of a audio freak.
I cant provide a precise answer, but surely is better than the nexus 4 ones.
