I tried to manually flash back to stock 4.4.2 (so I can upgrade to 4.4.3) on my moto x but whenever I type the command "mfastboot flash system system.img" I get "invalid sparse image chunk count. The rest of the commands worked. Now my phone is stuck in the unlocked bootloader screen and I don't know what else to do. Help please?
Try the latest mfastboot see if it helps

Thanks for the link. I used it and I still got the same error.
Make sure you are using the system.img from the correct firmware. Below is a link to the Moto model firmwares. Download the right one, unzip the files until you get to the .img files and use that system.img.

I've used different zip extractors and it always says the system.img file is broken. =O!
Thanks for the help guys! Appreciated

Try the steps listed in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53228057&postcount=148
Basically, the idea here is to flash gpt (partition) and motoboot ONLY, then reboot back into bootloader. Then it should allow you to flash the rest of the items without error. Let us know if it works for you.

And we have your answer. 57MB is WAY too small for a system partition....it is indeed 'malformatted'/corrupt.
Two possibilities:
1. Either your download of the SBF somehow got corrupted. If so, re-download the entire SBF, and do the steps in the post I linked.
2. You are trying to flash the system.img from the OTA for some reason?? The images contained in the official OTA don't contain the entire system - just an incremental update to the existing system. If this is the case, ditch that idea, and download the official SBF from here:

That's what I thought. I actually downloaded the SBF from the link you provided. When I open the zip file, system.img is 873,450,540. I'm gonna download it from my laptop.
Edit: Thank you!!! I downloaded the file in my laptop and extracted the file and I had the right size this time. I flashed it and it worked =) Thank you everybody! Y'all made my day =)

Hi there i've successfully unlocked bootloader

Can anyone help

Is anything about getVar or similar?
If yes, maybe line 11 from .xml file. Then go there and delete that line and try again.
If not, please give us more information.

Sorry i'm confused by what you mean on .xml?
I have no xml file??
Just the recovery and the apk files.

When you mention "(bootloader) Variable not supported!" I was think that you are using a .xml file to do "something".
I had a problem when try to unlock my device with a similar message, then go to .xml file and remove the getVar line that always stop the process.
I was think that you has some problem.
Sorry if not.
Please bare with me, I am probably a "C" student in the knowledge of this stuff. I've successfully rooted and rom'd the Galaxy Nexus many times but I'm having trouble with the new Moto X.
I unlocked without issue
Tried to follow the TWRP instructions (which clearly assume some existing knowledge). Not quiet sure what happens with Mfastboot but I got that from a download.
The TWRP flash failed. Can't remember the exact message but I think it was a binary size error.
Now the phone will not boot at all, it just goes back to the bootloader.
I am currently running the repair from the Motorola Device Manager and then I'll have to start again.
So what might be wrong ?
Bricked for a second time.

The img file should not be 7 KB. It's around 9 MB. Make sure that you have left clicked the link for the file from the other thread and go to the goo.im page. Then download from there. If you try to right-click the link and "save as", you'll get that 7 KB file.

This.
Make sure your bootloader is unlocked and that you have the 4.4 compatible twrp file downloaded (check md5). Sounds like you've got the bootloader part done but do not have the recovery file rather you've saved the link.

There he has the file you'll need. It should be about 9.62 MB in size. Be sure to compare the MD5 with the one on goo.im: cb7808078a6746dc87e6eaeb4f145dc0
Yes, file size was wrong and it worked after I redownloaded it.
Thanks.

When you downloaded the .tgz file and extracted it, it contained a .tar file. When you extract the .tar file you get the shamu-lrx21o folder. Within that folder you have the flash-all.bat, but you also have the image-shamu-lrx21o.zip file. Extract the contents of that zip file and try again. The system.img file is in that zip file.

I ran into this yesterday, do this:
Download the Android SDK: https://developer.android.com/sdk
Grab fastboot from the platforms-tools folder.
Flash System again
This will fix it, you just need the newest Fastboot.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm also stuck.
I keep getting the error 'cannot load system.img'. Everything else flashes fine. The bootloader and the radio. I received the OTA and that didn't install either. I was left with the android guy on his back and it said error. I'm not sure if it has to do with the encryption on the phone or not but it's frustrating. I did root with CFauto root method but my recovery is still stock. I'll try the new fastboot and see what happens.
This might not apply in this situation, but coming from several years of previous Motorola phones, sometimes I had to download and use mfastboot (Motorola's version of fastboot) for large images to flash. It's worth a shot and won't hurt to try it
Edit: here is the link. If you decide to try it, make sure to read the first section on renaming the file http://mark.cdmaforums.com/ADB.htm
I have requested the stock 5.1 file from motorola and it comes with everything to flash it on the phone via fastboot which also comes in the file. I know what im doing but for some reason everytime i get to flashing the system file it says this?
$ fastboot flash system system.img
sending 'system' (1404896 KB)...

When I requested the system image for 5.1 it came with fastboot in it everything is from motorola. Why would they not include a fastboot that can load a file that large?
Also i got the mfastboot v2 and it would not work as a fastboot, then i renamed it as fastboot and still will not load the system.img

Make sure that the fastboot which is running is the one included with the moto download, and not the one from the Android SDK...
In other words, for Windows PC's, if the Android SDK Platform Tools folder is in the path, often its fastboot will be used instead of the one included in the moto download.
Try renaming the one which came in the moto download as mfastboot.exe, and running it that way, by typing mfastboot.....

I have a locked bootloader, and want to restore my phone to stock ROM so I can download OTA updates. I have downloaded the restore to 5.0.2 windows tool, but I need the correct firmware for my phone. Where can I download from. Could you provide a download link? My system version is 22.41.24.thea_retgb.retgball.en.GB retgb

Those bats are made for XT1072, so yes, they should work on any moto g gen2 i think.
I don't know where you read retLA, i have linked you the latest builds of 5.0.2 retGB and 6.0 retGB
Follow this simple step-by-step guide
1- Check if you have MotoDeviceManager installed for the usb drivers
2- Download this XT1072_THEA_RETGB_6.0_MPB24.65-34_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip (GDrive mirror from Hemphiz) or from Filefactory
3- Download this https://mega.nz/#!flMFxT7a!uKLcNK_Ge6CsVxjSFDU06YRO3GMZFj39Zl-vVNbEVzo
4- Download the script for MM https://mega.nz/#!Od1i0I4a!3Oz4Wp4iYf_w5C0NLK438h-Ea1mXvUkHTDFzl7ie7cc
5- Extract the content of the rom zip in a folder (ex c:\rom)
6- Extract the content of Fastboot&mastbootV2.zip in the same folder of the rom files
7- Move the bat script in the same folder as step 5-6
8- Now you should have 22 files and 0 folders in c:\rom
9- reboot to bootloader and connect the phone
10- Doubleclick the bat script and wait for the phone to flash, it will self-reboot once done
First boot on 6.0 can take 20/25 minutes, so unless it's bootlooping don't panic and wait.
I know you asked for 5.0.2 but 6.0 is not bad, if you want 5.0.2 at step 2 dl this zip and on step 4 use XT1072 *.bat Flash Script for LP(5.0.2)
Hello, can you help me?

Thanks for your step by step guide. I wanted to know your opinion on the success of a dirty flash. This would involve editing the script so that:
"mfastboot erase userdata"
and "mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
are removed.
