Easy rooting on kitkat 4.4.2 - Galaxy S 4 Active General

Hey all I was browsing around other galaxy s devices forums stumbled across this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157. Now I downloaded the towel root and it worked great I'm not on the latest Ota but it should work with that as well. Make sure you use the latest so from here http://download.chainfire.eu/447/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip. I just extracted it and used the apk file with great success. No more flashing back and forth in odin.
Added TetheringProvision.apk use root explorer and go to system/apps/ and change the tethering apk and odex to .bak and paste the one posted here. Make sure to change permissions to rx-r-r restart phone and Hotspot should enable or at least it does here.

Just used it on mine and it worked just as advertised!
I have taken the latest OTA update (I was previously on the pulled 4.4.2 and then received the 60-someodd MB update last week).
Also adding in that the device still shows official on the status page. I didn't verify the knox counter for myself, but the tr author shows that it did not trip his.

Can you elaborate on the "change permissions to rx-r-r"? How do you do that?
Thanks.:good:

Firstly mount system in whatever file manager you use after giving it root access. Navigate to system/app long press on the apk. Select option to change permissions. On ES file Manager which I suggest you use, look at pic below it will show you what boxes to select.

I gave this a try on the newer NE9 with no luck. It doesn't get past the AT&T "verification" that I have tethering on my plan.
Any ideas?

Tried this on a stock I9295 running 4.2.2 but SU wont install binary as it says it cant. Tried Busybox installer and it says the phones rooted but fails when trying to install any busybox version. Anyone else tried on 4.2.2 with success?
EDIT : Tried again on stock 4.4.2 and it works perfectly

I believe this is for the i537 (USA AT&T version of the S4 Active) and not the international i9295 version

Success!! I was able to root and use the tethering application using the instructions above. I have the NE3 version.
It does ask you to call 611 when you turn on the hotspot though...but the it connects a few seconds later and stays on.
Is there a way to prevent the annoying message to call 611 when you turn on the tethering app?
Thanks again.

[SCRIPT] GladEnabler v1.05 (All Rooted Phones Supported-Updated 05/12/2011)

Updated: 05/12/2011
GladiAtrix Enabler v1.05 (Sideloading/Tethering APN)
Quick and simple tool to enable sideloading or add the AT&T tethering APN to your device, should you need it. This requires root to work
Also, this is a Windows only script. If anyone wants to port this to Linux or OSX I'd be happy to include links in the main post.
TESTED working on:
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.26
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.52
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.57
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.83
Rooted Bell Firmware 0.37.4
If you test it and it works on a version different than listed here, let me know and I'll update the first post
I do not have anything but an AT&T Atrix to test this on, but the sideloading fix should work if any device. The tethering APN is only for AT&T as it's carrier specific.
Little bit of additional info here:
Enables sideloading for any device
Adds AT&T tethering APN
You need to click "allow" to superuser when prompted.
Installation instructions:
Read the directions.
Read the directions again.
Read the directions a third time. If you do not understand a step, ASK before starting.
Download the script
Extract the files to C:\GladEnable. Do not install anywhere else. Having it inside a folder with a space will cause the script to FAIL.
Enable USB debugging (Settings -> Applications -> Development).
Connect your phone (I recommend setting USB Connection to 'None').
Run GladEnable.bat (If you're using Windows 7, run as admin by holding down control and double-clicking).
Follow the on-screen directions. You will need to tap "Allow" on your phone for each step.
Make sure you allow the superuser request on your phone or it WILL fail.
All done!

I realize it doesn't say it in the OP, but does this add the reboot option like your original Mod?
Brilliant, Ririal
Thanks for all your amazing work. I plan on running this script tomorrow.
In the event that reboot is not in the power popup, I really like Quickboot from the market. I have a shortcut to reboot the phone under my power widget. Works great.

This is not the GladiAtrix rom. It only does sideloading/tethering APN for users who just want to enable that, or for users who were using v1 of my retain root script and didn't enable it before hand with aRoot.
The ROM (when it's done, I'm having some issues with the installer. The ROM part is technically finished ) has the reboot power menu option.

Awesome Ririal. Will the new version of the ROM root 4.1.57 without needing to go back to 4.1.26 first?

Ok, I'm having problems with activating tethering in general. It seems that moto blocked tethering completely. I did v2 of retain root, i used this script, and i also tried it manually and each one of them says that i need a tethering plan. did moto fix this for good?

Thanks Ririal,
Many people are realizing that Titanium Backup restores App+Data well, but most system data and settings restores are breaking functionality. A factory reset will restore Blur account and some other settings that are lost but will also make side loading and tethering go away.
Now users we have a way to get those back with out a full SBF.

Bang! You got me! This is exactly what happened to me.
This update totally fixed my sideloading and tethering issues.
BTW, the script failed on me the first time, I'm not sure why. Something about permission denied on ./data/local/tmp/gladenable.sh. But the second time I ran it, everything worked.
Thank you so much Ririal!

Probably just missed the superuser allow request on your phone, that's why you got permission denied.

It's possible that Motorola patched the workaround for tethering. All this script does is add the custom APN, which used to work. I haven't looked at other methods for permanently enabling tethering as this method has worked for me in the past.
Manually add APN
Is it possible to add an APN without using the script, like with the Samsung Captivate, I'm asking because I'm planning to use the phone outside the US therefore I'm gonna need an APN not from AT&T...
Thanks in advanced

Hi,
Ran the script and allowed the Superuser prompt, all finished without error --- yet I still don't have the sideloading option in Applications->Development
And when I try to sideload an app, keep getting an error message that it isn't allowed for my safety ..
What am I missing here? Am on 1.5.7 Gladiatrix, root is working fine.
Thanks for any help!

Great work on all your programs and want to say THANKS for all your work with the atrix. one thing I would like to know. is there an app to install the clock and weather app as the htc phones have on them?
Problems...
I'm having an issue while running the command. I'm a recent iPhone user so this is all new to me. First I'd like to make sure this is all I need to do in order to install 3rd party apps (a.k.a. apps I obtain online) I don't need to do a full-blown root, do I?
While the command is running, it first asks me, "Do you want to install sideloading?" I input 'y' and hit Enter. That results in: " /system/bin/su: not found " Does this mean I need to root first?
Maybe one or more files are not getting extracted, but I don't see anything else in the download. My download contains 5 files.
1. GladEnable.bat
2. gladenable.sh
3. abd.exe
4. AdbWinApi.dll
5. AdbWinUsbApi.dll
Let me know if there's anything else you need that would help solve the problem.

Not sure, never had the sideloading not work for me. This doesn't add the checkbox in the application settings menu (what reason do you really need to uncheck it?), it just enables it. Make sure the script is completing successfully with no errors.

[SOLVED]Automatically unrooted?

Hi guys,
I just went into system apps, via Solid Explorer to grab an apk to put on my dev-host, when I got an error saying that I don't have root access.
I tried accessing other files in system root to get the same error. So I downloaded Root Checker and for some reason that's also saying that I don't have root access.
I know for a fact I have though as I've just been using root only features in ROM Toolbox Pro without an issue.
Any ideas as to why it's saying I don't have root access when I clearly do?
I'm on stock 4.2.2 and used the rooting tools in mike1986.'s thread to root once I'd flashed the stock ROM.

It already had the permissions from when I first installed solid explorer.
I just found out what my problem was. Superuser was installed by default and I downloaded SuperSU afterwards and must've disabled superuser and therefore was getting partial unroot issues.
I've now uninstalled superuser and I've got full access back

Hi,
I'm not sure what method you use to root your phone but for me, I managed to gain root access through this method.
1) Root phone using CF auto root for I9305. http://download.chainfire.eu/232/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-m3-m3zh-gti9305.zip Phone says SuperSU has stopped unexpectedly and Knox says an app has attempted to bla bla...
2) Download this zip file here. http://download.chainfire.eu/382/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.93.zip
3) Unzip the file on your computer, go to "common" folder in the extracted files.
4) See this Superuser.apk in the folder? Copy that to your Galaxy S3 I9305. (DO NOT TOUCH OTHER FILES IN THE FOLDER. ONLY COPY THE SUPERUSER.APK FILE.)
5) Make sure Unknown Sources is ticked in Settings > More > Security.
6) Get a file manager and install the Superuser.apk you just copied from your computer to your phone.
7) Open the SuperSU app and a popup will prompt you to disable knox. Disable Knox and you should have root access.

The previous post by me was exactly what i did. I just rebooted my i9305 and SuperSU doesn't force close. I also still have root access even after rebooting my phone. No buttons to press anymore. I'm really sorry if I couldn't help you.
Just to be sure, try re-installing the Superuser.apk again. Then open the new SuperSU app and go to Settings. Is the version number v1.93?
By the way, My I9305 has exactly the same firmware as yours, Baseband: ...XXUEMK1, Build number: ...XXUEML8
Root doesn't work...
I've tried a lot to root my i9305 after the 4.3 update, none of them being successful.
Samsung have also decided to make it even harder for us which means that 4.1.2 cannot be flashed back onto i9305 after 4.3 has been installed..
I'm really pissed off at them for that.
I hope your golf ball/band-aid galaxy s5 goes well.
I managed to root my i9305. I have problems to flash custom roms thou. When will we be able to do that? I don't care about my warranty being void.

For you it would be easiest to download framaroot ( Google search it! ) I know it worked with me on 4.1 but it should work on 4.3 also. Try all three rooting modes in the app

Does it work for MKC?
I used the chainfire auto root method and had the same issue with Knox detecting supersu and stating the supersu had stopped. I found on the forum somewhere that all you have to do is simply ignore the Knox message and go to the play store and simply update supersu, when that's done and you open supersu it will now give you the option of disabling Knox. I've successfully rooted my 4.3 i9305 and installed Wanam exposed along with the Boeffla kernel.

Thanks

Hi,
I'm not sure what method you use to root your phone but for me, I managed to gain root access through this method.
1) Root phone using CF auto root for I9305. http://download.chainfire.eu/232/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-m3-m3zh-gti9305.zip

For me had worked!
I have a I9305XXUEMK1 with 4.3.
Could i uninstall completely Knox? and use another firewall?
Thanks
after i've reboot the phone it reboots as unrooted same issue like you guys ... the solution comes with updating supersu... i've reboot the phone and still rooted... i really hope this will be a permanent solution.
since you don't care about your warranty it's easy to install a custom ROM...flash a custom Recovery(i recommend CWM) and flash the ROM you want...back-up first in case something bad happens(never did in my case) and follow install instruction for the ROM you are installing...
Hi there, I just rooted my s3 lte 4.3 and it says SU not working, I can't install the apk and I can't update in playstore, what should I do?

Hide 4.4.4 System Update?

I have a VZW DE on 4.4.2, unlocked bootloader, rooted, no custom ROM.
Was wondering if there is any way to hide the system update prompts/notifications as I'd rather wait for a more substantial upgrade (Android L).
Using root explorer I did go to etc/security/ and renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak to no avail. Also, there didn't seem to be anything for me to freeze in TiBu.
Not only is this a marginal upgrade imo, I just don't want to mess with going back to stock recovery, upgrading to 4.4.4, flashing TWRP, re-root, do system tweaks (e.g. replace ugly vzw 4G Icon and bars, but first check to see if someone made one compatible to 4.4.4), research whether wifi tether from xposed module still works on 4.4.4, etc. Just plain don't have the time to do all that at the moment.
Thanks in advance!
I thought I had replied to this exact question yesterday...
use a root capable file explorer, got to /system/priv-apps and rename 3C_OTA.APK
Of course, if your phone has already downloaded the file, navigate to /cache and remove it.
Reboot after making the changes.
that has prevented getting prompted in the past.
I did what Mark said.. renamed the 3c ota apk and also 3c ota odex file and confirm it will stop download and notices. if you just rename the 3c ota apk file alone and not the odex file to, you may get the download and reboot problems.. someone will have to confirm that, I gave a Moto X to my little brother running 4.4 and only renamed the 3c ota apk file and four weeks later he gave it back to me with a cracked screen and said it kept rebooting trying to update but failed because it was rooted. that's when I opened up root file explorer and noticed I did not change the odex file, I only changed the apk file. I'm running a 4.4 rooted and change both files and I never get the updates.
on my brother's new replacement phone running 4.4.2 I have it rooted with towelPie and renamed both files and seems to not be bothering me about the update now. I did let it download the new update at first attempt I went in and deleted the two files and it interrupted the download so I can confirm it will stop the download deleting those two files even when the download has already began
Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you take the update?

I can say for my two Non-DE Verizon Moto X phones running 4.4.2 and TowelPieRoot that I'm not taking the update for root reasons first and foremost. Until the time when a 4.4.4 root method is developed, if ever, I'll remain on 4.4.2.
I appreciate the suggestions in this thread however because I'm looking to hide these notices myself.

Would have to do a whole mess of stuff, like:
disable xposed frameworks and gravity box, defrost certain system apps and vzw bloat from TiBu probably, re-install android sdk (since I had formatted PC since 4.4.2), flash stock recovery, take the OTA, reflash custom recovery, re-enable xposed and gravity box (only gravity box has since split from one module to an ICS and KK version and I still have the old version), then upgrade and tweak gravity box settings, get rid of ugly VZW 4GLTE icon with stock/nexus version (but first see if someone made one that works on 4.4.4), research whether the xposed wifi-tether module works on 4.4.4, and maybe one or two other things...
all that takes TIME which I don't have a whole lot of at the moment... and all that for the ability to pause video recording and a get a dialer that has a white background instead of black? and supposed tweaks under the hood like battery and performance, all unconfirmed? yeah, personally, I'd rather wait.
Fair enough. So you know if you flash system.img once you reinstall xposed all your gravity box settings are still there.

Why not just use the FULL FXZ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/fxz-moto-x-4-4-4-212-55-26-t2827307
If you flash the FXZ, (since it is a "Keep Data" FXZ), you don't need to take the OTA. You don't need to disable Xposed. You don't need to disable any modules - or subsequently set them back up. You don't need to flash stock recovery. You don't need to worry about any modifications you have made to /system.... And you DON'T NEED THE OTA!
And just like @Schaweet has advised -- once you re-flash TWRP, re-root, and re-install Xposed Framework, all of your Xposed modules and their respective settings are already set the way you had them....
It turns this in to about a 10-15 minute process from start to finish. WAYYYY Easier. I don't get it...
EDIT: I do see that you have the "Old" gravitybox installed, so this might require setting up the new version. But everything else stated is completely relevant.
I froze MotorolaOTA 1.0

[Problem] Wifi isnt working after "rooting" I9305

Hello there everyone, total noob here.
I have tried to "root" my S3 LTE using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-cf-root-cwm-recovery-ported-supersu-t1914394 (or more likely this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45291825&postcount=306 ). Everything went great, Odin has shown a pass and it was successful while installing CWM, then I installed Supersu through CWM (only thing I did differently was putting a supersu zip file on internal storage) and that was a success too. I did everything like it said, even without plugging out my phone. After rebooting everything went down...
1. Knox is blocking SuperSU, someone reccmmended that I should have tried to disable it by installing supersu.apk manually, but then it has shown a popup that supersu doesnt have access to binary files. I have checked with root checker and it said that device isnt rooted...
It wouldnt bother me much, because having root isnt necessity for me, but...
2. I cannot access internet via wifi. It connects to router, signal is pretty decent, but still, when I try to use a build-in browser/chrome it just doesnt connect. Nevertheless, I can connect via 3/4g with no problems at all.
Now, I dont have root AND internet access.
Other info that might me useful:
Android 4.3
Null IMEI: no
Baseband: i9305XXUEMK1
I have performed factory reset, still no use.
Any help regarding repairing wifi, getting root access or bringing back state before "rooting" would be appreciated.
Regards,
Maziu92.

Just download the "SuperSU version 2.02" apk and install it. Its provided in this thread. (its newer than whats currently on Google play)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...covery-i9305-cwm-philz-twrp-versions-t2694249
It will ask to disable KNOX. select YES.

The best thing i can suggest you is moving to the new 4.4.4 Stock Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ck-rom-4-4-4-gt-i9305n-i9305nxxufni4-t2886807
Use Odin v3.07
and then (if u want) root it using "CF-Auto-Root-m3-m3zh-gti9305.tar.md5."
and install "SuperSU version 2.02"

Oh, I did it, that's why it said the binary was missing. But I did it other way around:
1. I have flashed CWM like it said in second link provided in first post
2. Installed SuperSU 2.02 from zip file on internal card though CWM instead of file provided in thread (I could have installed remove-boot-recovery too, but I didnt notice that I needed that. Anyway, I did that later)
3. Rebooted and tried to turn on - supersu was still blocked by knox :/ BUT!
4. I have installed manually supersu.apk, then opened it via installator (important! Dont tap 'done' but 'run'!) and next I didnt get the "missing binary" popup but if I want to disable KNOX. Well, yeah, I do, so I tapped OK and it looped and looped... http://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys5/comments/2a92qq/supersu_stuck_disabling_knox/cisq087 found this soulution and it worked (reboot phone and start supersu again). Sorry about my short memory, but I think I needed to install supersu.apk manually again and tap disable once more time, but disabling KNOX took a few seconds.
5. And then I went to the settings in Supersu and tapped option 'install supersu into /system', rebooted and it worked fine!
5.a To make sure it really works I downloaded (via 3g ) Root checker and it said it is rooted.
So now I have root, yaay, but still no Wifi access :/

I have been using odin 3.07.
Really, It is the only way to get back wifi? Are there any other options apart this?
Nooby questions:
-will it work with my phone? It says that its "MODEM: I9305XXUFNI3" and mine is XXUEMK1.
-in the meantime I have read about efs files/folder, what are they for and should I somehow backup them?
-while flashing 4.4.4 it is possible that my IMEI will go null?
-will it be possible to go back to 4.3?
I dont want to brick it or anything, thats why I am asking.
And of course, thanks for your help, Tharinduwijewardane ^^
Edit:
Actually, I have managed to repair my WIFI connection without flashing new rom etc.... So what was wrong, you will ask? Me.
I have downloaded adblock (before factory reset) and it asked to connect via proxy, so I did. And then I have disabled it because it was blocking SuperSU along with KNOX. And my phone tried to connect with internet via proxy, but it couldnt, because of this configuration.
Found this by complete coincidence (my GF told me to check if I get connection though Chrome and it said that it cant connect because of proxy settings). It is strange that this configuration was still there, even after factory reset.
Oh well, case solved, thanks again for helping and even everyone else for checking this out^^
glad to hear u got it fixed.
:good: :good:
