I won a mint Kindle Fire HD off eBay for cheap because it gives an error when trying to register it with an Amazon account. I knew I could root it and put a custom ROM on it so that is why I bought it. I have rooted and put custom ROMs on about nine original Kindle Fires but I am having problems with this.
I am following the guide [ROOT][HOW TO] Root the Kindle Fire HD and 2 with Windows - Noob (Simple) Version and I am stuck at the point of ROOT STEP 12 where I am to option 15 to root the Kindle. The actual line of Option 15 reads - Reboot The Kindle In To Fastmode <Preferred Mode> and I get this error:

I have tried 16 also to no effect. What am I missing here? The drivers installed properly and it sees the Kindle Fire HD when I plug it in. It said the ADB driver installed, is there a way to verify it?
Should I even be using this guide or is there a better one?
Ok I gave up on what they guide said and chose option 20 to Root the kindle fire. It does reboot my kindle twice when it says it is going to but everything on screen is showing it isn't doing what it is supposed to, can't find stuff. Here is a pic.
What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for the response. The System Version is 7.4.9. I have followed both the guides on this forum, using a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows 7 desktop. The kindle fire drivers and ADB drivers install fine, I can browse the SD card of the kindle fire HD from my pc but when I attempt to run the batch files on both computers it says it is unable to find, well, everything. Check out the screen shots. Would I have better luck using the Windows 8 laptop?
7.4.9 shrunk the /system and other areas in the root of the device so you would not be able to root it and install gapps.

Wait, got this yesterday off eBay and it was at 7.4.8. I attempted all night to root it using these guides to no avail. I wake up this morning and for some reason it is 7.4.9 even though it isn't registered (I bought it from an auction that says you can't register it because I planned on putting a custom ROM on it anyway). Can I downgrade it? What can I do?

Yes. A fastboot cable will make everything much easier. Does the adb reboot bootloader no longer work?

Thanks Red_81, I appreciate all the help I can get. Ok question for you, it tells me to choose the download I want but I have no idea what one to choose since I am at 7.4.9. Which one of these should I use:
Downloads:
KFHD_SRT_v1.3.5- 7.3.0 (seperate option for restoring factory recovery)
KFHD_SRT_v1.3.0- 7.2.3 (separate option for restoring factory recovery)
KFHD_SRT_v1.2.3- 7.2.3
KFHD_SRT_v1.2- 7.2.1
KFHD_SRT_v1.0- 7.1.5

I'll see about mirroring the other files when I get a chance, but I'm at work and may not have the ability until later tonight.

Not to sound stupid but I don't need it rooted before running this right, it just has to be in fastboot mode which the cable automatically does correct?

And another question, I see that the files in the new 9.4.7 say "stock", does that mean it is just the standard Fire OS or is it modified with the Play Store? Reason I ask is my Kindle Fire HD can't be registered so I wanted to put a custom ROM on it so I can access the Play Store.
You will need to downgrade with the stock images to 7.3.2 (I think) and then follow the instructions for adding the second bootloader and custom recovery. This thread should explain it.

Ok, so I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff, but I have managed to root my Kindle Fire HD 7" and I installed the Google play store, so I was happy thus far. Yesterday I lost root and couldn't figure out why. Today I noticed that my Kindle had done an update from 7.4.6 to 7.4.8 and I'm wondering if this is why I lost root? If so, how can I fix this to get my Kindle back into root? Like I said, I'm a noob and don't want to screw up my Kindle messing around with stuff when I don't have a clue. Any advice would be of great help, thanks in advance.
Oh yeah, I should add this information: I get this pop up from Superuser, "There is no SU binary installed and Superuser can not install it. This is a problem"
Yea when it updates it clears the system partition where the su binary is stored, you need to reroot it. Never heard of a 7.4.8 update, but if it is a new one and you can reroot it then you can just downgrade it with kindle fire first aid by sticking it into fastboot with a simple "adb reboot bootloader", think kffa will do it for you though.

:good: Awesome, thanks for passing that on to me, I'm going to give it a go and see what happens. I'll post a status update later today after I've had a chance to thoroughly test it.
:victory: Well I got it to root again and reinstalled google play with no issues to report, all went well. So is there a way to stop Amazon from updating my Kindle in the future? Now, the next task is to get a second boot loader on it, although I don't have a fastboot cable, so I'm kinda chicken, hahaha. But I'm feeling confident now, so maybe I'll give it a shot tonight. Wish me luck... A big thanks for the help, I guess I just needed some reassurance on re-rooting the thing and I'm happy.
Just make sure you downgrade the bootloader first, if you don't use the fireflash method then I recommend making sure to check the md5sum of the bootloader before downgrading it so you don't end up with a paperweight.

I'm having this issue also. Same update, same loss of SU + Play store.
I can't get my kindle to root like before though. It says it was successful but my fire becomes extremely laggy, no icons appear, where the navigation swipe is there are slightly darker vertical lines and the only way I've fixed it is by factory restore.
How are you rerooting???
I can't remember how I rooted in the first place, I only remember that I had massive issues getting GP store on and used this KFFA which is what I'm now using to reroot.

same thing happen to me so I tried getting adb to work witch it didn't that well, so I downloaded the update .bin file from amazon and edited it useing winRAR just added SuperSU to /system/app then changed a few things in kindle first aid then used a fastboot cable to upload the custom update so my kindle is running v7.4.9 witch I changed it to because it didn't work any other way. i'll make a video

I just followed the same steps as I did the first time I rooted it, I used KFFA. But this time around some of the actions described didn't happen, like Superuser didn't ask for permission as it did the first go around and a few other little things, but I just took it slow and easy and it came out working fine. Also I used KFFA to install GP, it also skipped a few actions, but I just have it a little extra time to do its thing and it works perfectly. I saw a fix for the laggy screen and icons issue somewhere, I think it's in KFFA? I would have to double check that when I get home to be certain.

Thanks for the heads up on that, I've held off on doing it until I have more time to research it. I like to feel somewhat comfortable going into it and not totally freaked out. Thanks again, you guys are great around here.
Sorted.
I rooted using The Bin4ry Method and using KFFA to bring all the other systems back on line.
is anyone having problems with ADB and fastboot on 7.4.8?
Because I tried rooting using KFFA that didn't work I kept getting errors so I tried using fastboot to flash the recovery using this code
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
I get "device not found" or when it dose work i get "failed to flash" (something like that) but i have the adb drivers installed would there be different ones for 7.4.8? When I type
Code:
fastboot device
it finds the device it just dosn't work when I want to flash
and only half the adb commands work
You have to have it with a special parameter telling it what the kindles vendor id is so it should look like this...:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery recovery.IMG
Try that.

I am pleased to say that KFFirstAide was able to restore root.
Thank you xda for pointing me in the right direction!

i'm not an expert with the 2013 kindles, but you shouldn't need one if adb is enabled, you should be able to run "adb reboot bootloader", unless for some reason you have no adb access.
no there isnt as of yet. adb reboot fastboot does not function on this device so you need the fact cable to get it into that mode to run the exploit
O well that sucks least I know this now. Can't believe they disabled the easy way to get into it.

Hi, rooting noob here-literally just starting!
Can't find anything on rooting my Kindle Fire HD 2nd Gen which is running the 11.3.2.3.2 version. It was installed today (so I'm not suprised that I can't find anything).
Anyway, tried using the files above by downloading and running the runme batch filebut it kept getting stuck on "Waiting for device." You mentioned fixing it somehow...How?
Please be thorough, I'm new.

Same here, been scouring the web and have found nothing, looks like we may be stuck for a while. The thing that drives me NUTS is that I got this warranty replaced by Amazon, and the day I turned it on it updated from 11.x...if ONLY I'd left it in airplane mode!!

^^ Same here.
Even contacted Amazon Support to see if there's any way to downgrade or reset to complete stock.... and was told that due to my Kindle Fire 7" 2nd Gen "lagging" and "freezing up" (wasnt sure exactly WHY I was trying to revert pre-update lol) all he could recommend was sending it in for repair/replacement. Dang it.
Off I go to (attempt) a fastboot cable.... <wish me luck!>

I have a Kindle Fire HD that has never been rooted (although I tried like heck last night when it was 7.4.8) and today I see it is 7.4.9 and have been told this is unrootable? Is this correct?
If so, is there anyway to add the Google Play store without rooting. I bought this on eBay listed as unable to be registered but I didn't care because I didn't want the Fire OS, my plan was to make it a full fledged android tablet with a custom ROM.
What can I do now?

Even though this says for the 2013 version of the Kindle Fire HD, it does work on the the HD 7 running 7.4.9. It is how I rooted mine. You will have to manually install SuperSu which you can get from Chainfire's site.

Im trying that tonight on a kfhd 8.9 with the 8.4.9 Hoping i can get in to go to fastboot. If i can not get this going soon i may fix it permanently using the microwave technique (as in putting the kinlde fire in a 1000watt microwave oven for 10 minutes and cooking it...)
If it comes down to this maybe ill record it for all to see haha.
Stupid amazon and their forcing us in to the x.4.9 update. This should not be legal for any company to do period. Would be like a auto maker sneaking in to your driveway and removing your performance enhancing upgrades and using a welding torch to put their factory garbage back on. And yes it is the same idea. We all root or kindles and other android devices (and apple products) to give us a better performing and or more feture rich device. Those who do this understand this voids the warranty and are not worried about that at all. Heck many of us own tablets etc that are long out of warranty so amazon etc will not even need to worry about that side of thing.
Sorry for the venting but yeesh this is irritating

No my device wasn't rooted and barely used at all at this point.
I did use a fastboot cable, yeah...
I also have 7.4.9 and rooted it with Root with Restore by Bin4ary, using Option 1, via ADB. Worked just as it did with previous OS.
KFFirstAide didn't root it.
What did you try to root it with?
Issue with rooting 7.4.9
I tried using the root with recovery binary to root my kindle fire hd, but it won't run fireflash, and busy box was not included when it rooted. Am I missing something here? It's a Kindle Fire HD 7", running 7.4.9.
Downgrade it with SRT or kffa, it will be pre-rooted. You may need a fastboot cable to do this though if "adb reboot bootloader" doesn't do the trick.

Glad you're here to help. Like 6 weeks ago I attempted to return to stock. It was my understanding that I needed to downgrade twrp to flash the image (which I did easily . In the other thread it specified to wipe system first (REALLY wish I had thought that one through). Now I can't push ANYTHING to the SD card. No adb, no USB mtp.
I've tried updating drivers on 3 different computers, (windows 7, Windows 10, and yosemite) Tried unbreakable tool and kfhd restore tool.
All I can do is manually boot to twrp.
I realize there's probably more details needed but I'm strapped for time (on break) I was just ? to see your thread.
Any attempts to help will be profoundly appreciated! Thanks.

Yes. That's all I can do. Not home but believe I'm running v 2.7.0.0

I've had time to think about it and I doubt hashcode would make a mistake like telling people to wipe system. And if he were mistaken there would be a LOT of people in my situation. So I believe what sets me apart is that my recovery is too old. The right drivers aren't present and I can't use adb as a result.
I CAN get this into Factbook both with a factory cable and with a regular one (the latter only works on Mac it seems). However, on Windows the restore tools both say Fastboot is not recognized command. I believe I tried flashing the updated twrp with Fastboot on mac but for some reason it didn't work.

Wiping system is necessary to install a new system stock or custom

"Fastboot is not recognized command." is a window issue not Kindle issue
Good info. Unfortunately I'm at work. But hopefully to nite I'll get what you're asking for. Really appreciate the help!
@sd_shadow
The current recovery is TWRP v2.7.0.0
I provided all the info I can think of at the moment. It's been about a month since I tried anything so my memory is a bit fuzzy. If you need anything specific please let me know. Bascially all I want to do is push any rom (custom or stock to this). I have the second bootloader and twrp working. I think MAYBE a newer version of TWRP may solve the driver issue. But I know I tried flashing twrp through fastboot and it din't work. I believe it just hung with no error listed.
Thought I might be on to something. I went into device manager and noticed the option to install legacy drivers. Both android and kindle show up so I got excited but it was short llived... Both attempts yielded they got installed but may not work. Sure enough they didn't.
Updated when in twrp over USB I can see kindle and now 3 android composite add interface. But they have a yellow triangle on them.
If I try to connect over add it says list of attached devices but show nothing. I tried mounting system but that does nothing
Clicking on Android in device manager I get this device cannot starts code 10
I spent a few hours trying different things and this seems to be my best bet (or at least the next thing I try). Can't do it tonight though because the windows pc I have is running adb 15 second installer and I don't have everything I need to complete it. If you or anyone else knows an easier way please share. Otherwise I'll setup sdk tools when I have a chance. Hopefully some time tomorrow. I'd prefer to do it on my mac because this pc isnt the best and really slowed me down tonight.

You have used the preferred driver from here Kindle_Fire_HD_ADB_Drivers.zip
What is your windows version?
Twrp should connect to the Mac, without issue, using mount usb or mtp.

I have NOOO idea how but I connected with mac. I swear to you I've tried connecting over adb before(MTP still didn't work btw). But I ran some basic commands with twrp mounted to SYSTEM, ran "adb devices" and it shows up. (I had tried SEVERAL variations of this before tonight)
Except instead of saying tate like it used to it had a string of letters/numbers then just said "recovery". Might be what it said before when in TWRP. I used to mostly use MTP when transferring files.
I was able to push the only amazon stockish files I could get 7.41 rooted+su from Hashcode. I also pushed updated TWRP and open apps for CM 12.1. Unfortunately adb push hung on that last one and then adb was gone. Couldn't connect. I bit the bullet and just flashed amazon and it worked. Just did this like 5 minutes ago so haven't tested root, recovery or anything else. I was intending on buying a kids case for this and letting my toddler son use it. We have prime and a lot of books i can access. So I might stay here but would like to get a newer version. Is there an easy way to get a later version of stock? I hate to give up root but he definitely doesn't need it and I've acquired several newer faster devices since I bought this a few years back.
Thanks a lot btw! I had sort of given up on this then I saw your thread. Just having someone to answer questions was enough to keep trying.

With Win 8, 8.1 & 10, Disabling Driver Signature Enforcement is likely needed.
For those with Windows 8.1 or 10
Watch [Video] How to disable driver signature enforcement - Windows 8.1 & 8
or How to Disable Driver Signature Verification on 64-Bit Windows 8.1 or 10 (So That You Can Install Unsigned Drivers)
and try
Open the charm bar and go into Settings and at the bottom click on Change PC Settings.
Go to the update and Recovery on left then Recovery
Advanced Startup > restart now
Choose the Troubleshoot option followed by Advanced options.
Choose Startup settings then on next screen click on ‘restart’.
Select option
Disable driver signature enforcement
Windows 8.1 will now reboot and you can go ahead and use the Kindle_Fire_HD_ADB_Drivers.zip

I signed up for free time and so far the only difference I see between 7.41 and a newer version would be inability to download prime titles. Of course this is my only amazon product running stock so I have nothing to compare it to. It's strange that the newest version on Hashcode's thread disappeared but older versions are still available. Usually it's the opposite.

Thanks. Think I did stumble upon that when I first thought about return to stock. But I'm not sure...
That page shows stock. I think the version I have, 7.4.1, is a modded version of stock. I also see recovery. Zip which is what I need to go full stock. But I don't know if flashing that in twrp will get me to stock.
After struggling just to push a file I don't want to take any chances. If there's a clear way of doing it I'm all in. I think this device will be eligible for the OS 5 update so that'd be my motivation to sacrifice root.
A little off topic--free time is pretty cool if you have prime but adding locally stored videos is a hassle (haven't been able to do it) I'm sure amazon did this deliberately but there must be a workaround.
I was able to download prime videos. Unlike on my android phone, they need to be added to the library first.
Can anyone recommend a fastboot recovery cable for a 2012 kindle fire HD 7 (tate)?

Likely a permanent brick. What version of FireOS and what actions proceeded the behavior?
