[Q] Advice on what to do with my Note 3 - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently, my note 3 is laggy, buggy and obnoxious. The Samsung stock messaging app cannot handle lots of texts. I cannot let any other apps access my facebook contacts either, so getting another app isn't quite a remedy. I would like to put a new ROM my phone without tripping knox, but that isn't necessary. If I could somehow streamline a back up, that would really help.
I would like to get another ROM, but I'm not sure what ROM I want. Could someone educate me on this, advise me on backing things up and tell me how to flash the new ROM? I've tried researching but I'm completely lost.
Thanks in advance!

bump!

Are you on Jellybean or KitKat?
If you're on Jellybean:
1. Download Kingo and root (use Kingo version 1.1.8 if you're on NB4)
2. Download and install Safestrap v3.71 (not sure if you need to install Busybox for that version. I'd download and install it anyways just to be safe)
3. Visit the Android development section and try out a bunch of different ROMs until you find one that you like the most
If you're on KitKat:
1. Download Towelroot and root
2. Download and install Safestrap v3.72 along with Busybox (Busybox is required this time)
3. Visit the Android development section and try out a bunch of different ROMs and see what you like best
Note: if you are on NC2 KitKat you can only flash KitKat ROMs. I don't know what you like or what you're looking for in a ROM, so try them all until you find one that works best for you. Make sure to read the installation instructions for each ROM before your flash it!!!!

Titanium backup will let you backup your apps (and possibly texts), but not your rom. Safestrap should let you create a backup of your entire rom.

Is there anything that will get apps, app data, texts/mms, contacts, etc? Basically every bit of what I've done to the phone?
I'd like to be able to add everything back easily. Or could I do that from the backup of the ROM somehow?

Titanium backup should allow you to backup all of that I believe. Titanium was buggy for me when trying to back up texts. There are several apps in the store you can use to backup texts/mms and contacts if titanium doesn't work for you. Also, syncing your contacts to gmail is the best way to back up and restore contacts.
You cannot restore bits and pieces of a backed up rom.

I just realized only Titanium Backup Pro does Text/mms. Any ideas for a windows program or another app to use?

I just wanted to warn you about Titanium Backup: make sure you only freeze apps and never under any circumstances uninstall them. I've found out the hard way many times that uninstalling preinstalled apps can cause all sorts of problems and you will have to reflash the ROM to cure them. Also, if you aren't 100% sure what something is then don't freeze it.

Try using hangouts as default messenger, I use it and to me its 1000 times better than the stock samsung one.

Just search for sms backup or contacts backup in the store. Any of them should do the job.

Sms backup & restore is good

Thanks guys! After rooting, I got set CPU, gravity box, a new messaging app which was able to use Facebook pics, and I've really improved my experience. I removed a lot of remaining bloat were too.
I may yet get a new ROM, but I'll probably wait for cyanogenmod to get. Less buggy. I want something with support.

There is no and never will be any Cyanogenmod for the AT&T Note 3. If you want a solid ROM with AOSP styling and lots of support try out Dynamic Kat with the GPE theme. That's the closest you're going to get to CM with this phone.

This is the supported devices page. It's there.
If what you mean is that there will never be a Cyanogenmod ROM made for the note 3, then that makes sense.

No, what he meant was that with a locked boot loader on the AT&T Note 3, AOSP-based roms will never work because they require a different kernel.
Also, to get a lot of cool custom ROM features without flashing a custom ROM, download and install the Xposed framework (google it). It's very easy to install and opens up a ton of customization options.

Makes sense. Thanks for the input guys. I'll be considering flashing, but for now, root access has given me a ton of improvements.

I wouldn't be so sure that the bootloader will remain locked forever. From what I understand a presenter at Black Hat is apparently going to show a method for unlocking the bootloader on any current Samsung phone.

I know they're different, which is exactly why I asked. If they were the same I'd already know the answer. I wanted to see if I need to replace the zx128 one. The response I received from him didn't imply that he's even working on Donut support until it's officially released.
Thanks for the info. I'm gonna try it when CM 4.2 is released.

I really like this app, but wished it also backed up settings, like home screen icons, call logs etc.. otherwise I need to still continue using mybackup pro.

Pretty sure that's a NO. While I don't have this app, I've read that the only way to show under "My Downloads" is to install through the Market.

No, cause you need to download app with Market to show up in My Downloads. Or have a root access.

Added search for Installer, you can search with software or hardware keyboard.
I just dl'd this and was uninstalling and getting a refund within an hour- it fc'd everytime I opened it on my rooted phone. I did read it does not play nice with Locale, but I am not sure that is why it constantly crashed- chris

I would also like to see a automated batch install process. I currently use a script I made and use with Gscript.
Also, is there an option to store an older version of an app when installing a newer version? With all of the ROM updates I would like to be able to store older versions of some of my apps. That way if I update to a newer version and it doesn't work I can revert to the older version that did work.
If it would do those two things I would purchase it.

Sure you can make backup of your apps, and then get back to older version if you need.
And new features that will come soon is: backup and restore to/from email.

So, I could actually have four versions of the same app - the current version and three older versions - and, install the one I want without disturbing the others?

Hey Galaxy Note 10.1 users!
I wanted to share my current ROM "in the works", it's not complete yet (and probably never will be) but this is a personal ROM I based off the stock ROM and adding new features as we go long.
I used to do a lot of ROM reviews, and this ROM is "noob-friendly" and designed for people who want to experience custom ROMs without losing stock features.
If you are a "purist" and want CM9/CM10, you are probably not going to like this ROM, just wait until another developer/Cyanogen/AOKP Team makes a ROM for you.
It's a custom ROM with focus on couple things:
1. Keeping TouchWiz, so you get all features of stock ROM like S-Pen.
2. Adding new cool features one baby step at a time.
3. Listening to users and improving upon every version update. I am trying to remove some of the bloatware (let me know which ones you absolutely think should be removed) and also add more features (let me know what features you absolutely think are necessary).
*WARNING - You assume ALL responsibility by flashing this ROM, I will not be responsible if anything happens to your Note 10.1!
Features:
- Based off Stock European XXALG5.
- Custom Bootanimation support (place bootanimation.zip in /system/media folder)
- App2SD support (When you have a microSD inserted, it will swap your microSD and internal storage on boot. To disable, simply take out microSD card during boot and insert after booting.) If you are doing this the first time, you might want to contents of your internal storage to microSD card to keep app data. This allows you to use up to 64GB for app storage instead of 16/32GB it comes with.
- Google Now
- Speed tweaks for 3G/HSPA+/WiFi
- Power saving features
- Graphic acceleration for your photos/videos
- Deodexed/Zipaligned
- More coming soon!
ChangeLog:
v0.2 Added App2SD support, Jelly Bean Animations.
v0.1 Custom Bootanimations, GoogleNow, speed tweaks for 3G/HSPA+/WiFi, power saving features, and graphic acceleration so your photos/videos should be higher quality.
Installation Guide:
- Easy install, just flash in ClockworkMod Recovery!
- No factory reset/wipe needed if coming from a stock ROM. (You can always do that after installing ROM if you have problems.) Do a factory reset though if you are coming from CM9/CM10/AOKP!
- No Cache/Dalvik Cache wipe needed, it's built into the ROM.
- PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ROM BEFORE INSTALLING THIS ROM! It makes like much easier when you can do a one-click restore ROM in CWM Recovery. Backing up your ROM will backup all your settings and apps.
*Note - This ROM is for GT-N8000! Please do not flash on GT-N8013 the wifi version, I will make another version for it soon.

There's a way to not increase binary, if you use the ODIN injection method to get root then push the recovery image using DD. I will have instructions up for that soon unless u know how.

I think that's a general problem with GT-N8000 and many of the newer ICS devices like One X and GS3 also, I just turn that off usually. But I will look into it and see if I can fix.
Just a question.
Within the first minute of the video, when you start S-Memo, it says:
"Syncing Notes"
What does it sync to?
My Galaxy Note N7000 does not have an auto sync feature and I hate doing manual syncs/backups.
Thanks.
S-Planer Widget
Is the S-Planer widget still bound to the stock Touchwiz Launcher ? I'm using ADW and I'd love to use that widget on it but Samsung managed it that in ADW it won't show up in the widget list
Sony´s Bravia Engine would be a nice addition to the ROM.
:fingers-crossed:
I should get my N8000 on Monday and will flash your ROM

[ROM] Ouya Plus

This is something I have wanted to do since we figured out how to flash CWM Recovery, it just took me a while to get it working right.
This is not an AOSP Rom, so don't expect a lot, it's just a flashable package that adds some stuff that the Ouya is missing. This is based on the Ouya 264 r1 software.
Changes from stock:
-Added apks - Busybox, Dropbox (should include a free 50gb upgrade), ES File Explorer, Nova Launcher, Pandora, Google Play Music, Superuser, Titanium Backup, and Youtube for Google TV
-Removed Kernel and Recovery flash from the installer
Bugs I have run into:
-OTA updates will still download and install. This will be fixed before the first stable release.
Instructions (shamelessly stolen from mybook4):
-You need CWM Recovery installed to flash this
-Do a backup in CWM before flashing (seriously, you'll have something to go back to if things go awry)
-Wipe cache
-Wipe dalvik cache
-Data wipe is optional, and comes with it's own set of instructions
This is a beta ROM, and I have spent a few hours in testing, but nothing can be fully tested by one individual. It is a flash at your own risk ROM. Don't flash it if you are afraid to break something. Please provide me any feedback or suggestions you have.
I wanted to include Hulu Plus and Netflix, but they don't like being flashed, so I'll add easy download links later. so you can sideload them yourselves, I'm about to head to dinner.
If you do wipe data I recommend for ease of setup that when it asks you which launcher you want to use on first boot, choose Ouya launcher then "only once" and run through the initial setup till you're at the main Ouya launcher screen. then hold down the "Ouya" button in the middle of the controller to simulate the "home" key, and choose Nova Launcher and "always". Enjoy!!
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7653846/OuyaPlusB6.zip
cool, if i actually manage to get CWM installed i may give this a try.
How much of a difference is there between this and ChickenStock?
It's similar in that it's a stock based ROM, but Chickenstock is meant to be disaster recovery, a solid base for rom building, or an easy flash to add superuser permissions to the console, but keep the focus on the Ouya experience. I designed Ouya Plus to be a quick flash for people who want to add some additional functionality to their Ouya, to make it do more than the limited minds that designed it intended. This is an Android console, and every media application you could ever want is available for android, so why should we be denied pandora or netflix, just because the Ouya people want to lock down their "console" to only allow things bought off of their store to work?
I wanted to make an easy way to add extra media functionality and system tools to the Ouya, without everyone having to track down and sideload the .apks themselves. I'm working on an easy way to install some of the other apks that i've been having issues with, and I also want to Deodex this rom so that custom themes can be applied, but I've run into trouble every time I've tried to use an automatic tool, so I'm going to try the last one I know of (xultimate) on it, and then I'll resign myself to deodexing each app manually and see what happens.
how exactly do you flash this to ouya?. I installed cwm recovery.
Once CWM is running, copy the zip to your internal storage, use adb or rom manager to reboot into recovery. The choose "install zip from sdcard", select the zip file from it's location, and it'll flash, then just reboot.
Installed and loving it , thx to the OP.

That's cool but how is that possible? And is it 50gb for 2 years?
Sent from my GT-I9300
Probably the SGS3 version of the Dropbox APK or something similar. If it is, then it's version 1.0 of the Dropbox, so it doesn't do well with mobile authentication, but if you disable that for 5 minutes, the 2 year (24 month officially, I believe) upgrade is probably worth the relatively minimal security risk.
Thank you
I managed to install your ROM and so far I am enjoying it very much. I do want to let others know about my experience in dirty flashing this ROM. I wiped cache and Dalvik cache, but did not do a full wipe before flashing.
On the first boot i got a flood of force closures on the OUYA Launcher process. It almost made the system unusable as a new one came up as soon as i acknowledged the previous. After about a minute of this they started to ease up a bit and i could operate Android with around 1-2 force closes every minute. I went to settings->apps->All-> Ouya Launcher->Clear Data.
This immediately stopped the force close errors and the OUYA launcher still works.
Aside from this the only other observation i have is that the on screen pointer for my wireless mouse feels "smoother" than out of the box.
Ohh and thanks for the 50GB dropbox upgrade.
Okay, maybe i didn't notice at home last night because i was on Ethernet, but i took my OUYA to a different location with no Ethernet and realized that my wifi will not initialize.

This sounds great! I'll be sure to try it as soon as I get the balls up to install CWM on it. It's kinda been sitting there gathering dust at the moment as I haven't been that inspired.

Did you ever get a deodexing method working (I see ouyaplusb6.zip is still odexed... as is the 328 OTA), I was reading somewhere that an odexed rom causes issues porting, so I want to get my hands on a deodexed OTA to use as a base.

Working on it now... Hope to have it done this afternoon if anyone wants it.
Sorry guys, I've been pretty lazy on this front since getting back from my 2 week business trip, but I may get a chance to work on a new version tomorrow evening. MasterZen88 if you can get the latest OTA to deodex that would be awesome, and I'll update Ouya Plus to use it as the base, with your permission.

Looks like you were right, each app will have to be manually deodexed. No worries. I've created a script to do this so hope to have it done soon.....

I was looking forward to trying this, but the wifi isn't initializing.

Screenies!
So far so good. Starting with a wiped phone started me out with about 3.6gb / 4gb internal storage which compared to the HTC rom is a pleasent surprise. Im on VM and all is well so far. data, voice, ect ect. not sure what else needs to be tested exactly but if i see something i will let you know.
Can you de-odex it?
I posted too soon. Cannot connect to my Moto 360. I cannot recreate the error that popped up but it was something like HTC service cannot ect something something. i wish i could have gotten a screencap of it. Still though lots of space. Snappy and I really like the included launchers. Must wait though until it supports my watch though. Thanks for the hard work man.
I'll look into it tonight. If you could get a screencap that would be really helpful.
I actually forgot I put the launchers in there, I really wasn't intending to. This thing would be under 600mb if I hadn't.
cm11?
What's different about this rom than cm11? Cameras work? signal? wifi? will this work on the boost variant?

I can currently wifi tether with my device and I don't want to lose that capability.

Does this mean you had 3.6 gb available after installing? If not, how much space on internal storage do you have?
Hope this helps

It does. Flashed it myself and was sorta depressed to have 0.90gb available. Once I restored my data backup from my own modded stock rom, then proceeded to uninstall all the HTC crap still left in this Rom (a little irritating) I had LITERALLY no more space than on my own revised Rom. Seems the cap on how much space you can have on stock is just a little over 1gb if you don't install anything else. Bummer...
I also don't understand the quick settings bar if we already have a menu with the same functions in the notification bar?
Regardless I see no reason to switch back to my System backup if there's nothing to be gained or lost so I'll stick with it for now

I put the quick settings in because I took out a few widgets that did the same thing, to save space. I wanted to keep as close to stock experience as I possibly can. I also did a lot of back end editing. Removing a lot of redundancies that HTC left in. XML code that spent a lot of time going through. I hope that it feels more snappier.

I removed every widget you left in as I don't use them, though I'm sure others may be. If you don't mind me asking, where did you remove the excess "back-end" stuff? It might seem snappier, I haven't had a chance to try it out too much. I'm a super-gamer and I'll be trying out some of my more intense stuff that usually holds up pretty well with some minor performance stutters. I noticed you added pattyboi's kernel which I was initially suspecting as the cause of the issues I was having performance-wise (not happy with the idle GPU freq) but I'll leave it as is and try to report what I can. I'm a power user/proficient tester, so I should be able to notice the SUPER little things that don't mean much to others. I'll check in later
Alternate Link
Is there an alternate download link for this Rom? I'm eager to try it out as I flashed CM11 and was highly disappointed with the camera and sd card issues. The link provided only pulls up my archive viewer and won't actually download the .zip file. I'm an avid tester, and keep several backups ready, in case I mess up. I would love to help with development as much as possible. Currently running the PattyBoi kernel over stock Rom. Overall quick response, but still no true customization options, even with root. I'd to change my boot animation as well as a few other things. S-Off for this device would be huge as well.
Is it possible to install this rom on a Sprint Pre-paid version, And if i will, Will it unlock the phone to other sim cards?

Ill tell you that i actually got it much lower by booting into recovery and wiping the folders that didnt pertain to the OS. ultimately i ended up with 2.97gb/4gb. its really important that you stop it from automatically updating all your apps. and only update the ones you use. for example i think google play books is almost 20 megs... as soon as i get home from work ill get my phone out and do it again and see exactly what i did.

I am having no problems with the ROM, it's fast and smooth. My only issue is after every restart Disable HW overlays in developer options is always switched off.
If you want fingerprint, flash 2.5 vendor
Is there a way to put blur in the notification shade, like evolution X?
Issue found - when opening settings from notification shade it sometimes causes systemui to crash
don't say "everything is fine" then, I'll no longer post roms in XDA.

That's the common thing on Android... Stop posting weird thing that isn't even related to bug... Go to buy iPhone if u want bugless UI

This is one of several reasons why Developers leave any given site. While it is ok to report bugs, please include logs if/when you have issues with any development on XDA.
Cheers and thanks to all for your cooperation: Badger50

No, just return the device to the stock operating system, Android 11 stock and then root the device, debloat yourself and enjoy flawlesness. Custom roms/o.s. will never work better then the stock UI for the A70. This is because not all drivers and software are released from samsung, just the basic so you'll actually be downgrading by moving to custom o.s.
Stock is bloated heavily, that we all can agree, but, everything works on stock even while rooted with Magisk including passing safety net. Ive also figured out how to upgrade the stock rom without loosing root, magisk, twrp, and ect. No more having to start over or factory reset when updating the o.s. and the steps are very simple. So with that said, remember, these custom roms/o.s. is a work in progress and not meant to be ran as a daily driver, at least not yet. So if your looking for a smooth, flawless U.I. well, stay on stock.

I did reread your reply 3 times, and I still don't understand why are you criticising him for posting a bug he encountered during his normal phone usage.
His report is missing the vital log, but that's no what you are criticising him for. Of course the ROM won't get any better than stock ROM if the development stopped.
I'm sure you understand what development means, thus, I see no justification to your criticism.

Sorry to bother, but I did exactly this (used MiXplorer) and copied the apns-conf.xml to my /system/etc and then rebooted the phone but nothing has changed and I am still unable to use cellular data. Is there anything you could suggest?
