S3 and S4 users have suffered this issue. The cheap chrome bezel chipping after having the device for some time.
S5 has this ugly chrome bezel around and it seems it's similar to the ones from S3 and S4.
In time the paint will scratch and wear off and your new S5 will look terrible, unless you use a case always.
What do you guys think? Samsung should have not repeated the cheap chrome bezel.

+1, Not everyone want to buy a phone with a case, they simply just love how it looks.
Unless we boycott SamSung phone, they will have to produce sth better to gain our trust.
I'm feeling like SamSung doesn't take care enough their value customers. They only care about how to maximize the profit. That sucks!
My s5 is worse than my old s4. I have a corner that flaked off.
It depends on the colour on the plastic under the chrome. I had a white s2 which had the chrome flaking off, I just scraped the whole lot off and because the plastic underneath was black it actually looked really nice. If it's black I'd have no problems doing that again. Do we know what colour it actually is?

Ohhh common, stop whining. You all now that this is going the happen, sooner or later with a case. So why did you bought an S5 knowing that this will happen? This is a stupid thread.
hmmm I don't think this will be too much of a problem
I have the white phone and prepared for the worst, I have a new OEM gold frame to change into. might not even have the chance to change it, as all my phone usually last over a year and not a scratch.

Is it good practice that everyone should put the phone screen upside down on flat surface? I usually put my phone back cover on table , guess it might affect the camera
Not everyone changes phone every year.
For those that stick with the phone longer this will be a problem.
We're talking about a product that costs 600€.
Would you find this acceptable on a 600€ TV, laptop, etc?
Those who say this isn't a big deal must be rich.

No, this is not acceptable but consider that from the S1 to S4 all had this problem, it is almost certain that the S5 would have this problem. It also depends on usage. If you keep your phone in the pocket with keys it will definitely scratch.

It's what most annoying me about Samsung building, I don't want or at least don't care if my phone is build in glass or aluminum, I really don't care about the device, but painting the bezels the same way by 5 generations just look stupid, I would rather they've made it like nexus 5: make it plastic but don't paint it. I had the S1 S3 and S4, and all had the same problem.

of course it will scratch, are you actually complaining about this phones inability to be kept in a small area with sharp metal objects?
(btw thats a question not a *****, im actually asking if ur complainign or pointing out that itll scratch
I'm not complaining, I'm saying that this is normal. What is not normal is that people ***** around that the bezel will scratch but from the S1 to S4 this seems to be inherited. Also, if they now that the bezel will scratch, why buy the phone?? Noo, they complain after buying it. People do your research before buying one

It's a little more complicated than that... The AMOLED panel is held down with adhesive just like all their other phones, but for the S5 the only way into the device is through the screen. 9 times out of 10, you end up separating the display from the glass and cracking the display. To get it off without breaking it is insanely difficult, and that's coming from someone who does this for a living.

Otterbox offers some of the best protection cases for devices. It rarely incorporates kickstands as part of the main casing. This shows you how I managed to splice in a thin kickstand from another casing. This saves you from carrying those stands so you can watch videos hands-free.
The "Otherbox Commuter" case you see here is an exact $5 replica done by a company called Swisstech in one of their kiosk stores here in Metro Manila. The original Otterbox Commuter cost $70 retail here.

The TPU case with the kick stand actually cost more at about $9!
You can exact the process with the original Commuter case if you want to do this.
This will give you peace of mind for accidental drops but giving you that kickstand function but still as thin.
Here's the video link of the finished case:

Nah, the point of the project was to really put the stand inside and not be just anything that I put on to the surface of the case. The 3 hours I put into this paid of so that it can still fit into my book hiding place for the Note II.

I've been to the Philippines twice and love it. It's not that it's so dangerous that you will get robbed blindly down the street, it's that items of value are less common, so you could get swiped in the most inopportune times. In the US or other locations, it's more common to see expensive gadgets. There is a lot of poverty in the Philippines and in regions of the world like that, it's very common.
It doesn't suck because you grow up knowing that's the way things are there.
ANYWAY, back on topic. Is there any way to get a Swiss-Tech case online? Was looking and it seems there is no way to get them. I like the price and the difference in look from the "Otterbox".
I'm all for making mods where necessary, but a similar case with a stand already built in seems easier.
This one is $7. My wife and I have them in different colors. They're great.

Id just go for a otterbox defender case. Super tough case plus the clip on the holsters locks open if you want to become a stand.. on the down side this case does make it a bit bulky but still protects it extremely well. .

Yes, there are reasons why is choose the Commuter over the Defender. One thing is the difficulty of changing the battery and taking out the micro SD card. I'd not be using that holster that much either. Where would I store that? I'm trying hard to conceal the Note, not actually show it off on my waist.

Does anyone have advice regarding going about using the HTC One without a case, naked and out in the world, without utterly destroying the phone due to scratches, dings and dents?
I pre-ordered my HTC One 64 gb on contract and Im considering selling it in december and buying whatever Nexus phone google is offering in november off contract, and judging by the nexus 4, the price point shouldnt be too bad.

If you want to go caseless, your best bet is to install something like the Skinomi full body shield. It should provide protection against scratch on the body.
get a clear case/bumper
I tried going caseless for sgs3, n2, and nexus 4.
Random scratches here and there. Not worth it!
So what If it scratches. You won't notice them when the screen is on anyway.
a pouch
I'm with you in that it seems a dreadful shame to cover up such a beautiful piece of design.
Personally my solution is to use a leather pouch - protected when I'm not using it and all it's caseless glory when I am

Same here, hate using cases for my phones. Went caseless with One X, then S3 then Note 2, Xperia Sola, then 4s, then Nexus 4, then back to One X (I know, I change phones a lot and now I'm planning to get the One ). What I did was buy those full body screen protectors, I used Zagg for the rear and sides, but used the Spigen ones on the screen so that I wouldn't even feel or see any screen protector on the screen.
I sold all my other phones (except N4 and Sola) near the real value I bought it because it still looks and feels so brand new and until now, none of my buyers have complained (I give them an opportunity to test the phones for a week first, if they need help with something, I help them to the best I can, and if they don't like the phone, I give them a full refund, but I ask for a free snack)

I've been fortunate enough to have not dropped my last 3 phones while caseless.
It used to happen when I would get out of the car, so now the phone is either in my pocket or in my hand when I get in/out of the car.
I always have a back screen protector so that the back won't scratch when it lays on the table.
Keys and change in right pocket, phone in left.
Other than that, keep a tight grip!

It's lovely naked, it's really is, people should have to pay to see it, it's like a peep show!
I'll be getting a pouch very, very soon... until then, I'm holding it like a baby!
This is the million dollar dilemma every time!
I HATE cases, the phone is designed to be held and felt as it is, not with a case that makes it twice the size (some don't I know...)
A pouch kind of helps here, but then if you are using the device and you drop it, I have yet to see a pouch that spots it has been dropped and quickly attaches itself to avoid damage

Everyone saying use a pouch for when the phone is not in use lol. U do know the most damage done to a phone is from dropping it right? You can't drop a phone thats putaway. You can when you are holding it. So pouch doesnt actually make a difference.

thats only semi true when you are carrying around taking it out from your pocket etc its always in the pouch
but if you drop while using it yes its true
so a pouch is kinda of half protection and protects against the element in pocket/ bag etc
I have one instance though a sharp object went inside the pouch I put my phone on... I'm not sure how many days it has been on the pouch but it scratched my phone like hell. I thought it was dust or something on my hands when it's dirty until I felt it when I was holding the pouch and meh! A little stone made it inside.
I recommend these. They aren't out yet for the One but should be soon. I used them on my One X for nine months and never had an issue. They are wet apply and shrink when dry so tightly that you can feel the raised lettering in the Beats logo. Their shiny though which may not appeal to every one.

Why cant they do something better than the crappy chrome plastic around the bezel.
My Note 2 and Note 3 look dented and crap because of this poverty spec feature. Now the S5 has it too
All i want is some premium built quality and better speakers on this phone and it would be perfect.

Just because a phone is made out of aluminium doesn't mean the quality is better. My HTC one still get dented when I drop it. It has scratch mark as well. It's also heavier and more slippery to hold.
I agree.

Also thought the same when I saw the Note 3 for the first time.

I do agree about the chrome paint though, it's unnecessary, a rubbery matte black like on the Nexus 4 would give better grip. That chrome paint will be the first to go, the glass front and the rugged back will stay the same a lot longer.
The plastic bezel is my biggest pet peeve with the device. Sadly very few of the S5 cases cover it either.

Or an iphone 5S.
I own them all and by far the iphone has the best build quality in and out, bar none.
Too bad it doesn't run android!
The HTC One feels better in hand (the M8 could be used as a deadly weapon in the hands of a skilled tosser, seriously!) but I see differences in quality from sample to sample unfortunately.
As far as making the S5 with a metal chassis, it may have better appeal but you just cannot wrap the current design in metal. Unless you don't mind serious signal issues!
If you want the phone looking new (and really this applies to ANY phone) you should wrap it in a case. Granted the iphone4 was probably the best for staying like new naked. Until you dropped it and shattered the glass.
The S5 does feel cheap because it's light. Like most things technical, the average person believes they are better if they are heavy. I don't mind the "bandaid" back cover to be honest. It's grippy. The glossy cover of the S4 may have been sleeker but it's a fingerprint magnet and shows scratches easily.
When it comes to something you carry, remember the heavier it is, the harder it falls. This is why a lightweight phone can survive drops better than a brick of a device.

All you people b!tching and whining, the back is removable and therefore replaceable. Go on eBay/Amazon and search S5 backs, or buy another phone. End of thread/discussion...
Can't believe this happened all of a sudden but I dropped my backpack with my Tab S 8.4 in it, and cracked the screen! First time I've damaged a device like this! A quick lookup seems to indicate that the glass is attached to the digitizer so I'd have to replace the whole thing. Probably not worth it?!

Of course it's worth it, but I'd send it to Samsung rather than replace it yourself.
The reason is when I first got my HTC m8 I smashed the screen and the casing within the first 2 weeks of buying it.
I sent it to htc and they completely repaired it, LCD, digitizer, housing, speakers, shipping both ways, all for £103.
This was less than what it would have cost for me to buy the parts alone.
It's not always as expensive as you think.
That is either a weird angle, some odd camera that to the picture, or when you dropped your tab s it hit hard enough to alter the shape, because the dimensions in the picture look off.
if your amoled screen is still working, it would be better just to replace the digitizer, way much cheaper than a whole new device
The exact same thing happened to me this week. I dropped my galaxy tab s 8.4 from no more than a meter high and the screen shattered. I was really surprised because I've dropped my iPad from much higher than that with no cracks.
Here in Australia the galaxy tab s 8.4 costs $400 new. I was quoted 400 to fix at an official samsung repair Centre. I couldn't even buy an after market screen off eBay for less than 280. So I bought a complete used s 8.4 from eBay for 250.

The picture is taken with a Galaxy Note 4 lol... I took it at an angle so you could see the cracks really well. If I am using it and not on a white screen you can't really see them.
Thanks for all the input everyone. I might just keep using it as-is because I was thinking of looking at the Tab S2 when it comes out. But, I might contact Samsung just to see. Thanks again

If that's the case why not just put a screen projector on it to make it smooth again?

The device came with a screen protector when I got it from someone on CL, then yesterday I pulled it out of my bag not knowing it had been damaged, saw the lines and thought wtf? I eventually took the protector off and was sad to see the lines were actually on the screen.... and now I actually ruined the protector. But it's alright, the cracks aren't very deep and it's still smooth enough. But yeah, that might also help keep it from cracking further..
I have the 10.5 with tempered glass. I really hope the same thing does not happen to me. I have been strongly considering an otterbox case or something for my device. *Wow*

Yeah, we should be careful with this device. It was in a padded backpack that fell from just a few feet and didn't even land right on the Tab I don't think. Had only a Samsung book cover case on it.

Lesson learned and point very well taken!
I know this doesn't quite relate but I chipped the smallest bit on my N9 right by the bottom speaker. Somehow It completely cracked the whole screen. Couldn't believe it. Reason I'm posting this is because the N9 is the same in the sense you need to replace like everything from what I've seen but I can't say for sure if thats what there going to do for yours. N9 is apparently really crappy to work on which is why they just pull the whole front panel off. Now I know there different devices but I feel your pain lol. HTC told me $125 to $350 depending which repair center lol ridiculous. Hopefully Samsung will give you a decent price and won't have to replace everything like they did to my buddies Tab S 10.5.
Atleast I know now to never put it in a backpack. I had mine in one a few months ago since I had to go to a place. Other than that my Tab S stays home (naked)

Thanks for the responses everyone! I declined the repair from Samsung, it was gonna cost 159 I believe. I've just been using the Tab as-is.. normally I hate any blemish on my devices but I'm surprising myself by not caring too much. Although I am setting my sights on maybe the Tab S2 or something..
It's too late now but for future reference next time consider buying damage insurance like Squaretrade. You can find discount codes and purchase it at a very reasonable price. I get it for all of my screened devices. I had to use it when I broke the screen on my Galaxy S4. There is a deductible but it is much cheaper then paying the full price of repairs or a new device.

Yeah thanks, I've used Squaretrade once and it was a decent deal. Mostly I don't really think of it, I just take my chances, and this was the first time I would have made a claim!
Hello guys i cracked my screen today and it cracked from topright corner and it has cracked lines till bottom left and right is there any suggestions what i can do? Is it worth replacing it what can i do?
I dont think so it worths, I had The same scenario with yrrchsebor. My 10.5 with gsm device was dropped about 2 feet height and first it looked like a smooth action to the ground but when i took the device i cant belive my eyes. I used it with screen protector glass but the problem was the screen didnt touch anywhere, devices housing corner first hit the ground and this made a pressure on the housing and yawn it. Also not bad like yrrchsebors picture my device screen was broken and there were so many cracks on the bottom right. Using screen protectors or covers doesnt protect those fragile devices. I bought my device with a good deal about 380 usd from Turkey and service asked 300usd for screen replacement. Search many many different special services for a month but there is no way to change the glass seperately because of the glued glass and lcd. Anyway i think im gonna sell it about 150 bucks and may be take tab s 2. My other tab is air 2 and it also looks like too fragile after this occuraance. Parallel to device improvements and technology it seems that we have to be more carefull when using this kind of devices. May be more thiny more light devices makes a sensation but on the other hand producers have to be focus on stability too. Take care and also devices
I have just ordered a new screen assembly from Ebay at £169, mine is the 10.5 4 G and I have seen how much these sell for and it far exceeds £169, so if you are handy with a screwdriver and wangle tool I would recommend it.
Hi there,
I am a very old fan of Montblanc (wallets, watches, pens etc, cases, covers). I was almost refreshing everyday Montblanc's website to see when it would be out for my Note5. I searched for anything possible you could imagine on it on the web, but did not really find anything... I have received mine today, and I am very excited to write this humble review, as I would have loved to find one during my researches on it...
Before it was out, I bought the original Samsung Flip cover and you will be able in this review to see both of them, side by side...
Please excuse by advance the quality of the pictures, I had to take them from my iPhone to shoot the Note5...
Up to October 17th, date of this review, Montblanc is offering 2 flipside cover and 1 case to protect only the back. This is coming together with a special series of cases with Tatoos on them, which I find horrible (personal taste, for me Montblanc should remain clean and simple)
http://www.montblanc.com/en/collection/leather/technical-devices.html?=undefined
One big mistake I told Montblanc online store by phone but it seems that they did not take it into account yet: The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Edge does not exist!! It's either the Note Edge (was out same day with the Note 4 last year). There's the Samsung S6 Edge, the S6 Edge+ but no Note5 Edge. And if a representative from Montblanc is reading me, take this note seriously. If I did not master both topics of Montblanc and Samsung phones, I would have never bought this case because of this huge mistake in its description. "Case for Note 5 Edge" a lot of people will be confused and... might buy something else, somewhere else, competition competition... Take it as a friendly advice
Ok now that's all said, let's start!
Front and back:

What I have noticed when I was looking at the back, and if you look closely at the top left, it's slightly curved to press more easily on the power button... I would have preferred to keep the layout straight but it is quite discreet and more easy to press on it so it's fine.
Inside left and right
This is the plastic part of the case to hold the Note5. As you know, the 3 big mistakes (yes mistakes lol) Samsung did this year with its note are:
- SD Card removed
- Infrared port removed
- Removable battery removed
Advantage I had with the Note 4 last year and Montblanc, I had to remove the original back cover of the phone and put the Montblanc's one. So there was no huge impact on the final thickness of the device... This year, it's not the same :/ As we have a non removable battery, I'm sure it was a headache for Montblanc.
Can you see the "made in Korea" on the plastic part? Do not worry, it's just this part... (well, I hope so!!! lol)
And here you can see the very clean "MontBlanc" in the bottom and the insane quality of the sewing... perfection as usual with Montblanc's leather.
Ok, now, have a look on how the S-Pen is protected. Unlike the original flip case from Samsung, Montblanc has decided here to completely surround the S-Pen which offers a much better protection and even, to me, guide more easily when I put in and out the S-Pen from / to the phone. So, good thing here:
And without the Note5
Now, some photos with the Note5 in it:
With the camera behind
Now when you completely open your Note5 to work on it
Now some comparison in terms of size with the original flip cover from Samsung:
Pros:
- High quality product
- Nice S-Pen protection
- Plastic part holds firmly the handset
Cons:
- Screen does not turn ON and OFF any longer with this cover... I need to adapt myself now compared to last year Montblanc Cover and the Samsung original cover. Both of them were "linked" to the screen... which is not the case this year
- No more adds-on this year by Montblanc: Last year, a lot of new features were offered with the cover. A new S-Note with Montblanc thumbnails, new pens, new wallpapers, etc etc. There's absolutely nothing this year, which make sense as even the screen does not turn on or off, so how could the phone know that's a Montblanc cover? It is clear that the level of partnership between Samsung and Montblanc has nothing to compare with last year. Montblanc was offered a place on stage during the Keynote. This year much less... Quite disappointed by this, there's not even any way to install the previous year package of the Note4 for my Note5... (if someone has managed to, please let me know, but without rooting my device please thanks
- We have a little bit more thickness this year as you can see. But that's 100% Samsung fault, not Montblanc, let's be honest, that's because of their choice of not having removable battery anymore, but it's still okkk, that remains acceptable....
Last words:
My Note5 is now finally complete I love this case.
That's all guys, hope this humble quick review gives you a better idea of what this cover looks like. I think this is the 1st review of this case on the planet, it's an honor to post it on XDA for you guys
See you

Yeah, you are right. Comes up fine on the web page on my computer. Just not showing on Tapatalk. Beautiful case man. Looks really premium, as I would expect it to. Kinda crazy that it doesn't turn the screen on/off though. That is kinda a bummer. Really good review though.
Thanks,
Andrew

Oh thank you very much, my very first review ever
For the screen, I hope that this will be fixed with a software update cause any cover should turn the screen off as soon as the whole surface is covered. There's no reason for not fixing this (I hope!)
hi,
congratulations for ur mont blanc case... i have a question, does the wireless charging feature work with this case?

Hi
Yes it does without any problem
Thanks for the review. Enjoyed the photos. I too have been refreshing Mont Blanc's page to find the release of the Note 5 cases. Never bothered to click on the "Load more results" link at the very bottom. Funny how it's buried far below.
Also, I don't find that these cases can be purchased online. Did you call to order?
I suspect that the screen staying off despite the opening of the cover may actually be a feature intended to allow the use of the quick note with the s-pen while the screen is off. Just a guess.
I'm very disappointed that the software features found with the Note 4 case are not included this time.
Also, how much for the cases?

Hi
Well, the issue with this case not turning the screen on or off is more when you close it rather than open it. In all cases when you open it it's ok, you need to unlock the device either with your fingerprint or password so what I mean is that in 100% of the time, just after opening it, phone requires a human action.
But when you close the case, voilà that's it. I would love the screen to turn off but no, you forgot re-open it just to press the power button. That's really annoying
OK concerning the purchase I had several phone calls with montblanc by phone but they weren't so helpful they did not really know the date release. So I have been browsing all Montblanc online store you can imagine and the only one I found the case available was the French one. Drawback? They only deliver to France and Monaco. I have someone in France who sent it back to me then.
Yeah, when I say that I really was waiting for this case, I meant it; )
I bought it for 175 euros or 185 I don't remember go and check but what I know for sure is that all stores in the world do not have it. Good luck!
