I've never actually used Kies for anything (LOL,right), but I can tell you that if you don't suddenly remove the USB from the phone or your battery dies out, nothing can go wrong. Besides, even if you brick your device, you'll just have to download a stock firmware from sammobile and flash it with Odin, so no worries here either I've ruined my phone a thousand times xD

There's only a few threads about gt-i8200. Reason for that is probably that it's quite new compared to i8190 and no developement is done..yet.
No don't do it cause after rooting installing ota or kies update bricks phone because the installation stops at middle due to root I myselftested it sevral times
Hello,
I was interested in this myself. Reading around suggested that Kies would soft brick your phone, and recovering it could be very difficult. I looked on YouTube (sorry, too new to post links!) and someone has uploaded a video that recommends using an app called SpoofFW to fool Kies into thinking your phone is completely stock.
However, as has been stated already, after upgrading, you will lose root, and all that Samsung bloat will be back again!
Maris
Best way to update without any problems is to download the newest firmware for your device from sammobile and flash it through Odin. After that you can root again and remove all the bloatware that comes with the ROM. ODIN>KIES

Hello,
Ik bricked my phone last week. Did something stupid, tried to format with CMW.zip. Very bad i know.
Because i needed the phone asap, i send it to samsung
Went to pick it up today, with the message that i lost my warranty. I can live with that.
When i turn on my device i get the message that there is no firmware installed and i need to connect it to samsung KIES.
What do you guys recommend? I can get in Download Mode, but not in CWM menu. Possible they removed the failed root i installed before.
I cannot connect to KIES, think you all know KIES is a sh*t program.
What do you guys advise me? Root again trough download mode and install CM, or try and connect to KIES with different PC.
Regards,
Joao

Thanks for your reply, i have no idea why Samsung gave me a blank firmware back. Can i just update it with http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3
Here i can find the stock ROM's.
You think Samsung change the Motherboard? Because they told me i lost my warranty and i cannot update legaly anymore...
Regards
Samsung usually loads the firmware and returns the phone. Now sure why no in in this case.
Yes you can download the stock firmware from sammobile.com and flash via odin. But if you choosing ics make sure not to wipe till a safe kernel is installed. I would suggest philz. That way the phone will be rooted as well. Hope that have changed the mb.
Flash the firmware and hope for the best.

I apologise in advance for creating a new thread. But I recently rooted my device and have encountered a 'No software update your device is modified' pop up. I spoke to Samsung and they said that I should unroot my phone then it'll most likely work. Can someone help me unroot my phone please.
Just flash the latest stock Rom from Sammobile.com via Odin, then re root.
Then you'll have latest Rom and root

Hey guys,
I have a Samsung SIII 4G LTE that I bought in Dec which was a stock Orange UK phone.
It has come with stock Android 4.1.1 Jellybean to which I haven't been able to update since!
I've tried various drivers, uninstalling, re-installing and all variations of plugging the phone in; Kies (have tried various versions of this too, current latest installed) will notify that it needs to be updated, downloads the update and then it just hangs.
I've also tried all variations of MTP, PTP and USB Debugging.
Argh!!! I'm at my wits end and all I want to do is update it; is there a manual way for me to do so and how do I make sure I have the correct firmware to update to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have tried literally everything and no luck whatsoever.
Thanks,
Beans.
Orange updates not Samsung .
Ask Orange if they have updated the firmware .
OTA or via Kies .
Manual update yes but you need to read and understand the basics first .

stock firmware is usually found on sammobile.com
Thanks JJEgan,
I've contacted Orange and all they say is "Use Samsung Kies to update".
Also, Orange is now EE so is there an EE firmware I should be updating to? Or do I stick to the stock Orange firmware?

Am I correct in thinking I need the 4.1.2 Stock Odin Package from this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942150
Does it come with Odin, or do I need to install this separately? Where can I find it? Do I need any special drivers? Does it do a clean install or do I need to backup everything and restore it post flash with firmware?
Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'm pretty new to all this.

Sorry, should have read a bit closer. I was going to recommend that you use CWM to flash ROMs back but you don't have the i9295. Where did you purchase it from? I'm from Australia, so I'm not sure about the US, but I think I've read in other threads that some Best Buys(?) have Samsung stores in them that have reflashed the stock firmware free of charge without actually checking your warranty. Maybe you want to look into this?

If you took the official OTA for 4.3, ML2, there is no known root exploit available. Odin is easy to flash with - there are 1 clicks that do all the hard work for you, all you have to do is put your phone into download mode and the app does the rest on your PC. Make sure you have the proper drivers installed. Best way I found was to download the software suite from Samsung for the phone. Without the proper drivers Odin won't see the phone (I found this out the hard way.)

No worries, I heard they were pretty good in the US. Remember though, you can't root it on 4.3 (yet). If they've set it back to 4.2.2 then you can root again and not update to 4.3. If they've set it to 4.3 then either you will have to follow @Devo7v's instruction to flash back or wait it out as a root method is currently being worked on.

Download the full ML2 Odin, check the MD5 to make sure you didn't get a corrupted download. MAKE SURE all the files are in the right place in Odin and flash away. It should put the stock firmware back on the phone. Then you can proceed from there.

The MD5 is sort of like the fingerprint for the file, so you need the MD5 of the file you downloaded to match the MD5 that was posted in the thread. Download WinMD5Sum from the website here. Under File Name load the ML2 Odin zip package that you downloaded. WinMD5Sum will generate the MD5 of the file you downloaded and you can compare that to the MD5 the uploader posted in the thread. If the MD5's match then that means you downloaded exactly what was posted. If the MD5's don't match exactly, then you have a corrupted download and need to download it again.

Jellybean 4.3 also Knox lock and Kitkat also Knox locked then why not possible Kitkat to Jellybean downgrade???
Because of different bootloader. It's not because of Knox, Google made it like that I think. On every other phone is so. Like on Pc you cant go back from pre-installed Windows 8 to Windows 97. Try to factory reset from settings, you will loose all data but it may be fix your problem

Because the bootloaders are different. Samsung will not let you downgrade the bootloader and the bootloader does perform some functions on the kernel level which can cause issues. Contrary to what others have said it is possible to downgrade back to 4.3, however nearly everybody has reported WiFi and bluetooth issues when doing that. If you really want to downgrade to 4.3, follow the instructions in this thread. You can always flash back to 4.4.2 if you want. Good luck.

When flash with Odin you can not have Kies active on the computer. Kies will interfere the pure USB connection you need to have between Samsung phone and Odin.
Don't connect USB to any hub, only powered connection directly from computer!
Haven't read complete Devo7v thread, but this mandatory fact was not in his OP where expected.
