[Q] Video playback issues with CM 11 (SD Card). Please help. - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently upgraded to the latest SDCard version of CM 11 (available in the android development thread). I used to have CM 10.1, but the SD card got corrupted, so I decided to upgrade with a new sandisk class4 8GB card.
Most of the apps work fine (though at times there is a bit of a lag). Youtube works great.
However, I noticed that I am unable to play any video files - whether video is stored in sdcard or in the internal storage emmc - using any of the available video players like MX player, MOBO, VLC, Android, ESFile as well as the stock player. Most of them give the same error message "unfortunately mx player stopped". I tried MKV, AVI and MP4 formats. I tried changing between H/W decode and S/W decoding and downloaded the codecs also.
But, the same video could be played using the stock ROM using the same apps (MX Player, VLC etc.) flawlessly.
I tried wiping data/cache, reinstalling the app/codec etc. multiple times, still has the same issue.
Please help. According to the play store, MX player is compatible with android 4.4.3.
Is anyone else having similar issues with CM11? Do I need to downgrade to CM 10.2 or 10.1?
Also I noticed that a number of applications like banking, paypal, hulu+ etc. are unavailable for CM11 (and some even for the stock ROM). Any idea why? I know hulu+ used to work on 10.1 earlier.
Thanks in advance.

Hulu plus is available with cm11 on my phone but yes its shows that its not available on the nook hd+. There could be a way or two around that. One is to change the device name so google store thinks its something else and the other is to try sideloading - but the apps could be incompatiable with the tablet layout perhaps - its hard to say.
Videos run fine from cm11 emmc so don't know what's happening there. Videos can not be used with some things due to a size limit of say 2GB (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714021) or other things. mkv, avi, mp4 are just containers and so perhaps they are compatible or perhaps they are not.
There could be another problem too perhaps with how the sdcard is formatted.
Some odd things sometimes.

I reinstalled everything from scratch using the latest version of sdcard kitkat rom from this forum and the video started working, but now chrome keeps crashing. After I removed chrome, when I try to reinstall it, I keep getting insufficient storage error, even after clearing using various cache cleaners. Earlier I could remove stuff from app-lib folder to get around this issue, now I am not even finding app-lib folder under /data.
Following are my observations from the last 3-4 days
- Interface is really laggy
- apps keep getting foce closed
- too many random reboots
- Suddenly one of my home screens (out of 3) vanished after one of those random reboots
I have a 3 year old touchpad with cm 10 which appears to be a lot more stable than the one running on nook (even cm 10.1 wasn't very stable on nook when I used it from sd card, I thought it was due to bad sd card, so I tried a new sdcard -sandisk class 4 as recommended here).
Really frustrated with cm 11 so far. May be I will go with an ipad instead.

Have you tried an internal (emmc) install yet? In my mind, there's no practical reason not to. Stock nook OS is awful.
Or just get an ipad. Those are great.

I have heard sdcard sometimes works better. I wiped everything clean and did a reinstall with minimal number of apps and everything seems to be fine now including chrome and MX player. Thanks to everyone for providing helpful suggestions.
I have one more question,
Can I configure an SD card with cm11 and send it to someone elsewhere with an HD+? This person may not be able to do his own install of cm11, so I was thinking of sending the working copy of cm to him, so that he can just insert the card in the slot and reboot without having to worry about doing their own install.
Will it work? Or do they need to do anything special so that they can see the contents of emmc?

It will work. The only issue with doing that is they will have the same MACAddress as you. That is not really a problem unless you both try to connect to the same wifi network at the same time. Also don't register with Google with your account. Make a fresh install and either register with their credentials or don't register.

JP6 Issues

The first thing I noticed was the need to download and install a new version of Task Manager through the Market.
Reinstalled all applications through AppBrain as the Market did not retain the record of my downloads.
Added Apps to my Home screens with no worries.
Today after Power Off the phone took ages to restart. Holding down the power on button solicited a vibration from the phone and then some time later the phone started.
After Power Off some of the applications on my Home screen disappeared:
Angry Birds
Cestos 2
Find Differences
Meteorlite WVGA
Slugs
After adding them back to the home screen I switched off again and back on. Same issue.
Same applications disappeared from the home screen and another App called Open Sudoku.
Anyone experiencing these issues on their i9000.?
Thinking of doing a factory reset of the phone, clearing the cache, format internal memory. Complete clean.
Start again.
Thought?
Starting fresh would be best and only option imho. On a sidenote have you noticed if you moved App 2 SD , the SD card doesn't get mounted when in external mode? I have as yet looked into it but I noticed I've lost external SD but it works fine inside the phone

Don't even know how to get into external mode. All the applications were installed at the same time so I assume they were all install to the same location. Your idea could be a valid one though. I have noticed Froyo is scanning for media each time the device is turned on. It's posible the icons are lost as a result of not retaining this information until the scan picks up on it.

Yep found out the Market/AppBrain had created a new profile as a result of the phones identification changing from phone to Samsung Galaxy S. Moving the applications across solved the problem.

I did a complete clean of the device and left the external memory card out of it while installing. All issues appear to be resolved for now but will continue to monitor it.
Found a new problem. Movie playback. Sound and video is out of sync by as much as 10 sec.
The movie plays perfectly on my laptop. Its a divx which I was led to believe can be played on this device. 25frames per sec video, sound is 112kbps, 2 channel, 48khz.
Any thoughts on this issue.
Problem solved.
Looks like Samsung lost the plote on this issue as well.
Running the movie in the built in player results in a sync problem between sound and video, 5 to 10sec.
Play the movie in Rockplayer Universal and the movie plays perfectly.
Is their an alternative player I can use which is free?

Mvideoplayer it is then.
Noticed when I add an external SD, Froyo creates two folders on the SD. Namely .android_secure and LOST.DIR
Any ideas on what creates these and for what or why?
Mvideoplayer has the same issues as the internal Samsung player. Out of sync sound and video. I get the feeling Samsung buggered something up with the coding for xvid and divx.
Two players with the same issues.
When I tested Rockplayer Universal it asked me if I should use the SystemMode or NormalMode. SystemMode I think uses Samsung System Files in some way and the result was a problem with alignment sound and video. Tested Rockplayer Universal in NormalMode I think used it's own internal files and it ran perfectly.
I guess JP6 is not as release worthy as we think it is.
When i first installed JP6 via kies had problems with apps not appearing on the android widget screen, the market icon didn't appear needed to do a facotry reset for that one, was slow and lagged. When i'm browsing for apps in the market place, using the 3g network, there was a constant error message popping up and couldn't download.
OCLF didn't work at first! needed to do a factory reset and then run the oclf, after which most of these problems seem to have been resolved, don't know how but now runs smoothly. Big thanks to ryan!!!!! samsung should employ you for their android software development team.
God help the sgs newbies who don't know about android, i jumped ship from the iphone 3g.

[Q] Yet another n00b thread; new Nook owner, very lost. tl:dr it for me?

I know there's a lot of threads like these, but everything I could pull up seemed really out of date, or didn't have the information I need. The Wiki was good, but just gave a list of all the builds out there, and I can't sort out which one is currently best for what. I'm hoping someone can give me some quick answers:
tl:dr: Have a brand new Nook Color. Video will be 95% of what it's used for, little to no web browsing or games. Would like to use it to watch movies/TV shows streamed from my NAS or off the SD card. 5% of use will be viewing photos directly off my digital camera's SD cards (using converters in the cameras).
Tell me what OS/Software to use. Most files are .mkv format, usually 720p.
Currently, I've got Nookie Froyo installed on the SD card, and after a lot of frustration of how the heck to actually get files onto the SD card while also having the OS on there, I found that bootloader NookColorUMS thing, which even though it seems like more steps than should be needed, has allowed me to copy files to the SD card with the nook connected via USB cable.
I'd like to have the OS installed internally, so I'm free to swap SD cards around to quickly move data around. Also so I can pull the SD cards out of my cameras, stick them in the nook, and browse the photos.
Currently I'm using Rockplayer Lite, which plays the 480p files fine, but craps out trying to play 720p. It also is very annoying in that it it has no back button in the UI that I can figure out, so you have to use that tweek to force the status bar to always be on top, which is annoying. If there's any way to get the stock player to play the files, that would be best. I know it should be possible, my Samsung Moment plays all these files naively with the build-in movie player. But the Gallery player won't play them on this version of Froyo that I've got on here.
My questions boil down to:
-What OS should I use if I'm going to go through the trouble of figuring out how to install in on the internal memory?
-What's the best video player/codec pack?
-How do I browse/play files off my shared drives on my computers and NAS unit?
Thank you for any answers you can give, or any directions you can point me in!
Hope this helps.
-What OS should I use if I'm going to go through the trouble of figuring out how to install in on the internal memory?
CM7 - try phiremod nook
-What's the best video player/codec pack?
I've been using handbrake to convert all my video to MP4 using these settings.
-How do I browse/play files off my shared drives on my computers and NAS unit?
PlayOn works pretty good. Depending on the source video type i get some sync issues.
Easiest install method
#1 Install Clockwork Recovery Mod to internal memory from your bootable SD card.
#2 Drop your desired rom on the root of a non-bootable SD card
#3 Restart into Clockwork Recovery Mod by powering on with n button held down
#4 Backup!
#5 Flash zip from sdcard
Now as far as video... I think you might be disappointed. You are going to need to reencode each video for the nook to get best results.
I recommend Phiremod Nook 6.2
Thanks for the reply's everyone. I'll get CM7 installed tonight.
I'm REALLY hoping to not have to convert videos to be able to play them on the Nook. That was basically the reason I DIDN'T get an iPad, I don't want to have to convert videos into a specific format to play them. All of these files played fine on my Moment, I guess I made the mistake of assuming they'd work fine on any Android device.
Is there no way to just be able to browse a network, and view/play videos and pictures on them? It seems like it should be such a basic feature.
What other good video players are available besides Rockplayer? Or, how would I install additional codecs to get the build-in video player to work?
I think Vitalplayer Neon and Mobo player are pretty good for the nook.
TL;DR; ?? Reaally?!?
Not reading (repeatedly the same instructions over), being impatient and rushing headlong into things is the easiest way to muck things up. We're just lucky NCs are impossible to be permanently bricked.

CM7 latest nightly (n86 onwards) has the newest fix for audio and video, while being on the .32 kernel and have support for an Overclock kernel. Smoothest vid playback I've ever seen, without any mucking about in re-encoding in Handbrake, etc.

I use moboplayer. 720p vids are a touch-n-go, some are OK, some are not. But if the HW acceleration (of the .32 kernel) doesn't cut it, moboplayer has the soft-decoding option.

Cifsmanager.
Just install, no other tweaking necessary. All extra files (mentioned in older thread abt this) have been in the CM7 ROM since n30s or n40s (or n50s, I can't remember really ).

[Q] best custom rom

What is the best custom rom for galaxy tab p1000 beside milestone 5
I like MIUI-XJ-SGT and Overcome because almost everything that is important to me seems to work. But I think It depends on your criteria.
I've been trying every ROM I can get my hands on for the last two days, as well as multiple versions of each.
I've been looking for a rom that supports NTFS on the external SD. (MIUI and Overcome lack NTFS support)
For me the perfect ROM would have:
NTFS support on external SD
Video and Audio HW support functional in stock and installed video players.
Working YouTube app.
Working Flash support in browser.
So far I have yet to find one that satisfies all criteria.
Boca comes close, but lacks HW video in stock and most installed players except dice.
okay thanks......,..........is cynogenmod 9 still beta
I tried the latest build as of yesterday. When I try a ROM I am usually looking for the criteria I listed above, because I wish to use the tab as an effective media player.
So I found the following:
Suprisingly HW acceleration works in installed video players BUT
Hardware Audio did not.
NTFS access was very spotty, with a few apps able to see files but most unable.
Youtube force closed for me every time.
So, unless a lot has changed since yesterday, I would call that very much a beta.
LOL I just realized I may be mixing up my findings with Milestone 5. Will try CM9 again this afternoon and correct this if I find something different.
LOL I just realized I may be mixing up the findings for Milestone 5 with CM9, will try CM9 again today and update if I find something different. So many ROMs so little time!
LOL hope I am not mixing up the findings for Milestone 5 - going to try CM9 again today and will update this if I find something different
Didn't try flash in browser, because at that time I had already dismissed the ROM for my needs. Will try again on a later build.
Tested slightly newer CM9 today. Here are the findings:
I have the following build of CM9 on my tab now:
cm-9-20120511-NIGHTLY-p1-signed
Installed: gapps-ics-20120429-signed
This is most recent version posted to the CM9 nightly builds as of May 13. This was installed on a Tmobile GSM tab.
1. Wifi - Working fine
2. Market: Working fine
3. Stock Video player DOES see files on NTFS formatted sd card.
4. In Settings under Storage, NTFS formatted card is seen and correct size is stated.
5. Hardware video acceleration works in stock video player. This is using a 720p MKV file.
6. Hardware sound does not work in stock video player - at least I haven't been able to find a way to get it to work.
7. Dice Player can't see files on external SD formatted to NTFS.
8. Dice Player from files on internal storage: has HW acceleration and functioning audio - works very well.
9.. Youtube videos play very well from stock browser.
10. Stand alone Youtube app works well.
11. Observation: Copying files to internal storage via USB is slower than in the GB ROMs such as BOCA.
12. MX Player Pro Plays HW video fine (720p MKV) but has no hardware audio. Can see files on external NTFS formatted SD. Will play with sound only if software sound deconding is used. Then it works reasonably well.
13. Flash video in stock browser works.
All in all a pretty decent ROM. Only big issue is the lack of HW audio in video players, and if you want to use NTFS on your external SD, support is poor.
thank ...man this info is the best

Thanks for your great Info!
Have you tried the latest update-cm-9-20120525-NIGHTLY-p1-signed.zip?
The reason I ask is that a friend of mine has just bought one off eBay but has Froyo.
Knowing it's already rooted, is it worth moving straight to CM9 now? From your description you gave, it appears almost good to go?

I've been using the nightly from the 23rd and now the 25th. Both fantastic roms. I would have no concerns recommending either as a daily usage rom.

Dude, there isnt such a thing like a best rom, its ****ing rude to compare the great jobs of our devs. All ics 4.0.4 roms r working better as the stock firmware by samsung and we got better support. Just try them by yourself but dont blame others by asking such stupid questions. I tried all ics 4.0.4 roms, ****ing great job, but somehow i prefer aokp. Maybe because of more features but i think switch soon. They all r freakin good. Chheers

Jelly Bean Media Scan Issue

So basically when using any of the Jelly Bean roms, my music and pictures on my internal storage are not being scanned to show up in their appropriate apps. I have tried all the solutions I have found on other threads but none of them have worked. I know a few people have this problem and I would appreciate it if someone could help as this is the only problem I am having using the Jelly Bean roms.
Solutions I have tried:
Clearing storage media data
Installing other JB roms
Installing different kernals
Mounting SD and emmc in recovery
Factory/Data reset (all JB roms)
Fix Permissions
I usually don't have any problems I can't fix on my own with my experience with Android over the years, but this is the only problem I can't seem to fix.
Help.

This happens in ICS Roms as well (if you perform a clean install), my guess is that you'll just have to wait it out. The Media Scanner should have started automatically once you've finished setting up your phone. Give it a good 30 minutes to scan your stuff and it should show up. Otherwise, try downloading one of the media scanning apps from market (e.g. "Rescan Media") and see if it does the trick.
I know, it is pretty frustrating.
What I noticed is that picasa/google photos sync fine. Those are the only photo albums that show up in my gallery.
But if you take a picture with the camera that picture will show up. Weirdly enough, downloading a photo from the browser doesn't show up.
I have had no luck with any music. Even adding new music via USB doesn't seem to show up either.
It is the only real thing that's keeping me from using Jelly Bean as my daily. If a month or so passes by and Jelly Bean is still not on the Nexus S, I might just do a full wipe and start from scratch. But fingers crossed that Google can step up and get Jelly Bean working as well as on the Galaxy Nexus.
Those who are having issues - does the media process also eat 100% CPU?
Starting to seem like a common problem across all devices with JB...
While mediascanner going nuts is a long standing problem dating back to at least Froyo - it seems FAR more common in JB.
Turns out Google made some significant changes to mediascanner... It no longer caches a bunch of stuff, which kills performance when scanning.
Even if a directory has no actual media files, or has a .nomedia file, it'll scan the entire goddamned directory. One example is that if you have Parallel Kingdom installed, it will sit on the PK directory for 10-20 minutes!
up... any news? This is the only problem JB gives me...!
i had the same issue and i did backup of all my data to my computer after i format sd partition and now it works normal
See my thread about Media Scanner:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801378
There is definitely something amiss with Media Scanner on JB.
Having exactly the same problem with Elite JB..
is there any solution out there? (I read something about .nomedia file, but I don't really know how to do it)

This is the solution I found. I think from ics apps doesn't get turned off even though you press back button. Thus what's happening is that after rescan media is turned on initially, it scans media. After scan is done app doesn't get shut down thus reopening app just opens the app to its previous state wheb scan was complete.
So what you have to do is hit multitask button, close rescan media app by dragging then re open rescan media. It will open fresh and will scan media.
X-Bean ROM scans my media without problems.

Just a wild guess here....
I have a sensation with the newest CM10 JB beta build. I too was having trouble with seeing images in my gallery. Turned out that their is a problem with ROM Manager....so after i deleted it, ALLLLLL the imaged started popping up in my gallery.
Just something to try......
Follow this guide, it works for me; http://ishan-thecholeric.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/solve-media-scanner-problem-on-your.html?m=1
Install QuickPic to view all the images the gallery doesn't pick up.

Has anyone tried the fix I linked above yet?
It works perfectly for me. It keeps media storage running as normal. It only disables the media scanner service that the problem is coming from. Then simply use 3rd party apps like QuickPic to view all the media instead.
I had the same problem but since I installed JRO03L 4.1.1 BETA 9R2 my problem was solved. I haven't had any problem since then. You can try install this ROM...
follow this :good:
The same for my SGS with CM10 latest nightly.
Pics and music do not show up in stock gallery and music player.
Media scanning service keeps restarting.
I aslo tried every solution in the first post but no effect at all.
3rd party app like QuickPic does the job for me, though I have not found some app to play music...
Other than the problem above and lag caused by google search, Jelly Bean is quite smooth on my phone.
Hope someone find the solution...
A temporary fix:
1. Get Nextapp's FX file explorer.
2. Go to the folders with media in it.
3. Tools, rescan media.
The issue with my phone was camera360. Once I froze all 360 files my media scan worked normally.

1. Get Nextapp's FX file explorer.
2. Go to the folders with media in it.
3. Tools, rescan media.
The issue with my phone was camera360. Once I froze all 360 files my media scan worked normally.

After u delete all the 360 files, your media scan worked normally even for music? Not just photos?

New owner, video & music questions

Hi, I've bought 2x Nook HD+ for my young sons for Xmas and need to get them up and running before the big day. Apologies if my questions seem a bit basic, my knowledge is limited and I'm reading all I can to learn but don't have much time! I've decided not to root the Nooks in case I get it wrong and mess up Xmas, but i will probably have a go at some point. Does the Nook play videos & music on the stock rom? avi, mkv, mp4, plus mp3 sound files? or is there an app that will play them from a micro SD card? I'm planning on filling up a micro SD with loads of films for them to watch. Also, my lads currently use my ipad for games like angry birds etc, I presume these will play fine on the nook from the playstore? thanks
One that seems to get mentioned in forums and has high rating is Mx Player, I use it and is one of the first app I install when testing roms. Also for the software decoder, the Neon version is the one to get from play store, it's recommended by the developer (under settings). Use it to play ripped files of all kinds, including downloaded ones. Yes you can use this on the stock rom.
Yes I suggest you mx player, it plays any video up to 1080p fluently. Also Nook HD+ can run most of the games, even asphalt 8 on medium settings, so angry birds won't be problem at all.

Nook's for younsters
First off, I also like the MX Player for videos. Seems to play 'em all by default with no additional config by me.
On to my question though, which I think may be appropriate here. I recycled a couple Nook HD's for young grandchildren. Loaded them with games, vids, pics, etc. In the process of recycling I discovered that the one that was originally mine, still had a lot of old browsing history type stuff on it even after I reinstalled CM10.1 to emmc. Things like online bank sites, ebay, amazon, etc. in the form of apk files. I found the info in a folder called "cm data", NOT just "data". I opened the tar.a & tar.b folders in a rom backup that I was going to use, to inspect them. That's how I discovered it. Needless to say I didn't use that backup.
I had assumed when I re-rooted, so to speak, and reinstalled 10.1, it would erase all the previous stuff. I guess it doesn't. I know pics & vids are not backed up during a ROM backup and are left intact on the device. Does anyone have a list of directories, folders & sub-folders that are NOT touched via a Rom backup, a root and/or a CM install?
This would be handy to know when recycling or simply getting rid of devices. Or perhaps there is a better reset method before recycling that does a good clean sweep? Thanks.

The factory reset command in CWM has been modified to not wipe the cm_data folder which is installed if you ran my or bokbokan's hybrid install. To wipe it fully including any media files and the old cm_data folder, do a format 'data and datamedia' in the mounts and storage menu in CWM. That clears everything.
