So I want to wipe everything from my phone, is there a way in recover to wipe everything and then just flash a new ROM?
Wipe everything, as in your data/apps? Sure, factory reset. It can be done via stock recovery or via the settings menu on your phone.
As for flashing a new rom... Stock roms can be flashed via RSDLite (which can also erase any data/apps), or via mFastboot... if its a custom rom, they usually get flashed via 3rd party recovery.
so exactly what are you looking to do?

I am looking to get it completely wiped, keep nothing on the phone, no pictures, music, etc.
Easiest way: go into Settings - Backup & reset - tap Factory data reset, on the next screen tap Reset phone, on the next screen tap Erase everything and then let it do its job. When it's completely done it'll reboot twice (once to wipe which is done from the recovery - it's a different wipe, however), and then a second time to start up "factory fresh" where the phone is in out-of-box condition, internal storage will be wiped as well at that point (no personal data, nothing left on it at all).
This way is different from the recovery "data/cache" wipe which just resets the device but leaves the internal storage with your data still in place.
There's no need to flash a "new ROM" on it, but that can be done as well if you absolutely must do it, either manually using mfastboot and the img files or just using RSDLite. You have to use mfastboot because the traditional fastboot won't flash the system.img file, it's too large hence the mfastboot variant which can do it.

Okay...so I had the Cyan ROM and I went into Recovery and wiped everything. Does that mean that I don't have a ROM installed? Or is it just like a factory reset...but instead it resets it back to the original Cyan ROM?
I did do a full wipe and then flashed what I thought was a ROM but I guess it turned out to just be an add-on.
So, I guess my other question is...when I flash an addon/theme to a ROM...it becomes a part of that rom...even after a complete wipe?
Factory reset/wipe wipes everything. You don't have a ROM to boot up with anymore.
Add-ons go on top of ROMs. Add-ons alone = nothing to boot with, either.
You can still boot after doing a factory reset, to my knowlege it just wipes all your settings and internal data.
It does? Admittedly I haven't tried that for a while, but the last time I wiped in recovery and rebooted, it didn't really boot up.
I understand the factory reset under Settings -> Privacy is different, though.
When I woke up this morning...I tried the wipes under Recovery just for the heck of it...and it booted up. Now I'm just what exactly is on the ROM? All the addons and themes? It looks that way.
I guess since the only real danger of Bricking the phone would be to interrupt the flashing of the radio...so I guess I'll go into trial and error mode for the next couple of days.
Yeah, during my "let's try everything and flash different ROMs twice a day" phase, I kept expecting the phone to die and never wake again. Looks like the only real ways to brick it are flashing radio and SPL.
Okay...so if you use the Factory Reset under settings...it seems to do nothing but reboot the phone.
If you wipe through Recovery...it just resets your settings and apps. All addons are still intact. So I'm assuming that when you flash an Addon...it becomes fused with the main ROM?
I don't understand why the ringtones that I pushed to the system/media folder are still there after a wipe and reflash of the same rom? Shouldn't reflashing overwrite everything?
I am going to be selling my Hero to someone who would like it rooted (as it is now).
His plan is to use it in WiFi mode only and won't be activating it with Sprint.
Is there a way to clear all my private data (logins, bookmarks, contacts, calendars, etc.) without unrooting?
Will he then be able to enter his google account info and gain access to the Market though WiFi?
Thanks!
Eph
The "Factory Reset" feature does the trick. But if you are really paranoid, you could wipe data, cache, dalvik and resintall the ROM from recovery.
Won't factory reset unroot me?
Will he still be able to access the net and the market via WiFi?
What ROM are you running?

Factory reset should bring the phone back to the state it was in when you first installed the rom. If you really want to be safe, boot into recovery, wipe everything and reflash the rom. You will still be rooted. Remember to either remove and keep your sd card or to format it to erase the data on it, THEN create a nandroid for whoever is buying the phone. Yes, they will be able to run the google setup via wifi if they choose to do so.
Weird.
After I do a factory reset (either from settings or from recovery), it stays in a boot loop. I have to pull the battery and restore the Nand.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Eph
Tried many different factory resets last night.
Tried from recovery mode and from settings>privacy.
In each case, I got stuck in boot loops.
Also tried to wipe data, cache, dalvik and resintall the ROM from recovery. Same thing - boot loop.
All I could do was pull the battery and do a nand restore.
Any ideas?
go here and download the ruu. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800586 . follow the instructions. this WILL take away root and will flash you black to stock. then, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-743289.html and follow those instructions to re-root your phone. it is very easy. then flash your rom of choice again. that will erase your data AND get rid of your bootloop. idk why the othere way isnt working for u though
OR, you should try to take out your sdcard or format it before you reflash the nfinite's stock. i had this problem once because some of my data was on the card and so when it tried to boot it got stuck.
Thanks guys. I tried the factory reset a couple more times, and for some reason it booted.
Thanks again!
Can somone explain the difference between (full) wipe, factory reset, ...
Is a wipe the same as format?
Is there no difference, or does nobody know it?
A full wipe is when you delete everything on your phone. A full wipe is needed every time before flashing a stock or custom rom. It will delete everything on your phone and you will not even be able to boot. Only Clockworkmod and the Download Mode will be left. Meanwhile, a factory reset will only erase data from your phone's internal storage. Factory reset is suitable only when you are in stock rom and a non-rooted device. It is dangerous to do a factory reset if you are rooted or having a custom rom. You will brick your device.

You must have flashed a Android 7.0 Samsung Firmware with Odin.
TWRP recovery
Format data in recovery
First installation needs a full wipe! (Updating to newer releases a dirty flash will do)...

I was surprised that after flashing stock ROM by ODIN, phone was not cleaned from the user data.
I mean: account settings, applications installed by user, etc.
I know that flashing dont erase data from internal/external SD card, but why all data was still exist?
Only Wipe Data / Factory Reset will erase all user data?
Btw, Merry Xmas

Nope, factory reset will not erase all user data. Go into setting/storage and delete from there (not sure cause I didn't have the device now). If you want to erase using odin, tick the repartition box while flashing the firmware. This is the easiest way I think.
Odin flash doesn't wipe user apps and their data, but it may cause bugs if you come from another ROM...
E.g : if u soft bricked on stock JB, just odin flash is necessary.
for other ROMs, it may or may not lag.
I will describe my way.
I tried to install CM 10.2
I did factory reset, next steps follow procedure.
When I did first start, unfortunately keyboard stop working, so my cyjanogen install failed and I decided back to old system using backup.
After restore and start, phone required settings like on first start after factory reset.
Lol, big surprise.
Ok, I entered necessary information but after reset -
again same like after factory reset
I tried from another backup with same result.
Hmm, big mess.
So I flash stock ROM by Odin.
And new surprise - phone with fresh system and all my own settings and applications from last restore.
Two disappointments:
1. Restore from backup does not cause a return to the initial state.
2. Flash ROM by Odin don't make factory state of phone.
I have question, if format partitions: system and data and next restore backup will do real state phone on this backup?

1. Almost every restore from backup for me it returned phone on state when backup was made. Only if my backup was bad (did not have enough place on sd for backup or something corrupted it).
2. Flashing stock ROM by Odin do not touch data partition (or folder whatever it is). So if you want to erase that, you need to make factory reset. It is like that on every Samsung Android device - I am not sure for other, never used.
When you come back from any CM10.2, Omni 4.3 and CM11 based ROM - first flash stock with Odin, do factory reset - and after that restore backup (ofcourse first root, install CoCore kernel for CWM before restore - you can't use restore in stock recovery).
Tnx for answers.
This is weird that format system partition not enough to get rid of the CM
But I checked this again and exactly after refresh ROM by Odin - restore my settings and data works fine.
Hmm imo this is mess in whole Android system

Explanation for that, TeamJanica used preload partition for swap, and it is patitioned in other format than the one stock ROM use. That partition is not used on CM for files, but it has it's use on stock based ROM.

supposedly you have downloaded the stock FW, flash via Odin with re-partition ticked. if it fails, extract the PIT file from CSC_OMC_OXM_XXX save it in a location and load it at the pit session via Odin the re-flash again with re-partition ticked.
hi,
i want to "factory reset" my phone but want to keep using the current non-stock ROM, what should i do?
should i flash the whole ROM (using flashtool or recovery mode?),
or just flash the same version of OTA package in recovery? (i can't find recovery in 6.0.1, i'm quite new to 6.0.1)
There's a factory reset in the settings menu for most ROMs. It will wipe your data partition, including your Downloads Pictures, etc. It doesn't wipe the system partition. You need a recovery to run the reset though. If you have a stock ROM you want the stock recovery. Apart from that info, you need to give more information, if the non-stock ROM is based on a Sony ROM or if its something else, is your bootloader locked or unlocked. Is your recovery the same one that came with the version of whatever stock rom you have, assuming that's what you have, do you have a differant recovery, such as TWRP or CM recovery.
That sort of stuff.
If you've never rooted or installed a recovery, then you have stock stuff. You can factory reset but you'lle want to backup what's on your phone first, downloads, pictures, whatsapp pictures, music, etc. All your apps will be wiped as well as their data, so you'lle be starting by reinsalling Angry Birds and be at level 1, for example.
