XPERIA styling for OmniROM - General Omni Discussion

Hi All,
I wanted to make OmniROM to look like a stock Sony XPERIA firmware, the one has nice signal bars and navigation bar symbols in particular, so I extracted necessary files from original SONY firmware and prepared them to merge with OmniROM nightly that I download and flash from time to time. Maybe someone will find these useful so I'm sharing them here along with instructions:
INSTRUCTIONS
Tools:
I advise to use 7-Zip to work with the nightly you download. You may do the same with native Windows explorer, but I wouldn't trust how it will re-pack apk archive.
1. Merging framework-res
a. Go to \system\framework, find framework-res.apk, open it inside 7-Zip as archive
b. Go to \res\drawable-xhdpi and paste there appropriate files from the attached archive
c. Go to \res\drawable-xxhdpi and paste there appropriate files from the attached archive
d. Close the archive saving (updating) all the changes in it
2. Merging SystemUI
a. Go to \system\priv-app, find SystemUI.apk, open it inside 7-Zip as archive
b. Go to \res\drawable-xxhdpi and paste there appropriate files from the attached archive
c. Close the archive saving (updating) all the changes in it
3. Your styled ROM is ready to be flashed.
ATTACHMENTS:
THESE FILES ARE ONLY FOR 1920x1080 PORTRAIT ORIENTATION DEVICES (NOT TABLETS!)
XPERIA - framework-res.zip - for styling framework-res.apk
XPERIA - SystemUI.zip - for styling SystemUI apk
XPERIA + Android L Navbar - SystemUI.zip - for styling SystemUI.apk, navigation bar will look like Android L (triangle, circle and square), images are pulled from NEXUS 5 Android L Developer Preview image

Winzip hax of source-built ROMs are a horrible idea.
While we won't merge anything that changes the default theme and still haven't merged a theme engine (the legacy T-Mo one had performance issues on KK, CM's new one is unstable as hell from talking to other projects that implemented it), if people REALLY want to change their UI, they should be changing the resources prior to building with a local patch, not haxing ZIPs.

How to Port themes

First off, BIG BIG thanks to dhemke17, this is only me adding to his guide.
How to Port Themes To Other roms:
First off, Slow down, relax, look at what you are doing, this is a generalization, if the xml, or image file does not exist
in the apk your trying to theme, do not add it, or subtract it, you add or subtract anything it will not work, YOU ARE ONLY
REPLACING!!(doin some math here is your ticket to boot camp)
1) Download 7-zip, or winrar as they can open .apk files without unarchiving them.
2) Download both the rom you want to theme, as well as the theme you want to port.
3) Using 7-zip, open the rom and pull out the following files:
a. Browser.apk
b. DeskClockGoogle.apk
c. GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
d. Launcher2.apk
e. SystemUI.apk
f. Framework-res.apk
4) Make a separate folder and unarchive the theme your want to port there.
5) Open a theme .apk file(s), Open in 7zip or winrar, dont extract, just open and manipulate.(keep in mind, all your image
files you will need to replace will be in the following folders)
6) Open these folders in your themes .apk(s) files:
a. Drawable-mdpi (may be drawable-xlarge-mdpi/hdpi/nodpi)
b. Drawable-nodpi
c. Mipmap-hdpi
d. Mipmap-mdpi
7) Now, open the corresponding folders in the roms apk file,(agian, winrar, 7zip)
a. Select all images from the theme's .apk and drag-and drop to the corresponding location in your roms apk file.do this
for each image and you will be about 90% thereā€¦
b. If the image you want doe snot exist in the theme, use photoshop or gimp to produce it as you see fit, when your done
make sure you put it in the right folder, make sure its the same size and resolution and name as the original, or it will
not work!!!
8) There are several xml files that need replacingā€¦
a. DeskClockGoogle.apk/layout-xlarge-land/desk_clock.xml
b. Launcher2.apk/layout-xlarge/
i. all_apps_paged_view_application.xml
ii. button_bar.xml
iii. customize_paged_view_item.xml
iv. customize_paged_view_wallpaper.xml
v. customize_paged_view_widget.xml
c. SystemUI.apk/drawable/
i. status_bar_notification_area.xml
ii. status_bar_notification_panel_title.xml
d. SystemUI.apk/layout-xlarge/
i. status_bar_notification_area.xml
ii. status_bar_notification_panel_title.xml
e. framework-res.apk/layout-xlarge/ keyguard_screen_status_land.xml
I your making a new theme or have nothing to port, you will need to decompile with apk tool to actually go in and edit values and colors in xmls
Below is the link to download a update.zip template, (how you and everyone will apply the theme)
By this step the structure of the folders inside of the update.zip should seem familier, just bare in mind anything you put
in there will 1. replace the existing 2. add if not there already. You will Open the update in winrar 7zip as well, if you theme an
app thats not a system app, it will go to update.zip/data/app, if it is a system app it will go to update.zip/system/app,
and the themed framework-res goes to update.zip/system/framework/

Nice post...looks familiar lol...I would like to add a couple of things though since this was very specific for the the HoneyBread Theme:
Additional Steps:
1) Pull the images as described above
2) In order to determine what xml files were originally edited, one can arrange the folders by date modified and go through and find what xmls were most recently edited and pull them...OR
3) To modify the xmls yourself, you must use apktool to decompile the specific apk files. Once decompiled, you can actually read the xml files and you can edit them yourself.
Remember, when porting a theme, always give credit where credit is due and you should ask permission from the initial creator before posting. Have fun everyone...if you need any help with theming/apktool, feel free to contact me here or PM me and I will be happy to help.

Its from CM...gbread...they just made it an apk to run on their theme engine. I would love to learn how to port the themes myself...I have read through this tutorial, but at some points I am getting lost. Here is the theme...I mean if you guys could help it would be awesome!

I hate to say this, but there would be all sorts of compatibility issues being that the theme comes from a phone, which has different dimensions and sized images, they all have different names..it would honestly take forever to port. One would be better to completely redesign the theme for honeycomb. I don't have time for that right now
that is a good point, it is sweet though.....onward to the Charge
Id love to see this on the charge...if you plan on tackling this.beast, you have to modify the XML files yourself as aosp files aren't compatible.

hey guys. I've been beta testing bigdx's zoom zoom theme for the galaxy tab 10.1. I've ported it to Caulkins touchwhiz km7 rom but I can seem to change the clock colors. Can you help me out?

hey i was porting the aosp theme of galaxy s to galaxy fit....everything worked fyn xcpt one !! in main theme a green line comes below every power button of the pulldown status bar when it is switched on...i am just nt able to put it,pls help!!!

[KITCHEN] MIUI v4 Theme Kitchen [WIP!!] [Beta 1] [5/25/12]

So, I'm a themer at heart, and I love MIUI. Sometimes making MIUI themes gets me confused, I have a nice compile script set up for .9.pngs but then the folders and zips and etc etc, sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed and I completely lose myself in what I was doing. So I decided to make a sort of kitchen, resembling dsixda's ROM kitchen.. currently it's still kinda far off, but that is the ultimate goal.
This is not a graphical tool. This is not an image manipulation tool.
Basically, you take the apks you want to theme and put them in their own folder. Using framework-res.apk and framework-miui-res.apk isn't 100% necessary, but if they're not included, there's a chance the apks will not decompile properly. It will install the two frameworks if they exist, and then decompile all the apks in the folder. It goes into the AndroidManifest.xml file to get the package name (ie com.android.mms) and changes the name of the folder to it. It takes colors.xml and turns it into a theme_values.xml. It then deletes all the extra files that are not needed for a theme, and creates a generic description.xml file. It tells you to edit your pngs, description, and theme_values and run the compiler.
The compiler runs in the same directory, and compiles all the .9.pngs in each separate folder, puts the zips of them with no zip extension into a new "theme" folder, then puts it all together into an mtz in that theme folder.

How to use it:
Extract v4tk folder somewhere, and add it to your PATH
Create a new folder, copy and paste the apks you want to theme into it.
- framework-res.apk and framework-miui-res.apk from the same build as the apks you're trying to edit is essential unless you already have them installed with apktool
From terminal in this folder, run "mktemplate" - this makes all the magic happen, and it actually creates a description.xml based on your input.
Edit the pngs, delete the ones you don't edit, for .9.pngs make sure to leave the 1px border alone unless you know what you're doing
Edit the theme_values files, remove the lines you didn't make changes to. Make sure no @color:android/red or whatever are in them. Hex argb only.
Go back to your terminal, run "mktheme" - this compiles all the .9.pngs, packages everything up, and creates an mtz based off your input for a filename. The mktheme script also supports lockscreen, wallpaper, icons, and preview folders... The template does not create these, but if you make them, the mktheme script will package them into the resulting mtz.
For linux or possibly cygwin (should run fine in terminal on OSX - untested though) only currently. I'm afraid it's been over a decade since I've messed with batch scripting, and before I go through the hassle of putting together a windows version, I want to have a complete project.
Also, just wanted to say one of the main reasons I'm releasing this tool is because MIUI v4 is changing a lot week to week; sometimes there's new images, sometimes there are new colors in the theme_values. If I made a template, it'd be obsolete in two weeks time
Also, this will work with any* apk for your theming pleasure, not just MIUI apps.
*maybe there's an app it can't decompile. shouldn't be, but be warned

[MOD/GUIDE] HTC Sense Stock Battery (HDPI/XHDPI)

Stock Battery Icon for HTC Sense ROMs
This should work on any version of Sense 4 including 4+ and possibly Sense 3.x (see below).
What is this MOD?
It will allow you to restore your battery icon to the stock battery icon which is useful if you are using a custom ROM which uses a modified battery icon. This is based on the same mod I created for the EVO 3D here, except it is now updated and moved to a more general area since it applies to any Sense device.
How does it work?
It simply replaces the stat_sys_battery.xml and stat_sys_battery_charge.xml files under /res/drawable in the SystemUI.apk file including the stock icons under drawables-xhdpi or drawable-hdpi depending on your version.
What phones/ROMs are supported?
Anything running a Sense 4 based ROM and is XHDPI (EVO 4G LTE, One X, etc.) or HDPI (One S, One V, etc.) should work.
What about Sense 3.x?
The directions below should still work on Sense 3.x but you may have to substitute SystemUI.apk for framework-res.apk for the manual installation.
Which version do I need?
XHDPI is for HTC phones such as the EVO 4G LTE, One X, One X+, One XL, Droid DNA, etc.
HDPI is for HTC phones such as the One S, One V, EVO 3D, HTC Sensation, etc.
RTB-**DPI is for those using Rom Toolbox which will automatically patch the SystemUI.apk for you.
DISCLAIMER:
Use at your own risk. Always backup your ROM and/or system file(s) before editing! It is not my fault if you do not follow directions. If you have a problem with this MOD, please feel free to post in the thread and I'll do my best to update/fix the problems. I do not own any other HTC devices except for the EVO 4G LTE (Jewel) so my testing abilities are limited.
Guide (Manual Install):
Download attached Sense4Battery-**DPI.zip and extract contents to a folder on your desktop
Copy SystemUI.apk from your phone (/system/app/) to your computer's desktop
Rename SystemUI.apk to SystemUI.apk.zip
Open SystemUI.apk.zip in WinRAR
From the zip file you downloaded in this post, copy the "res" folder (which is inside the "SystemUI" folder) directly into the root of SystemUI.apk.zip which you have open in WinRAR
In WinRAR, click ok and leave all default settings as is (making sure ZIP is selected and not RAR of course).
Close WinRAR
Rename SystemUI.apk.zip back to SystemUI.apk
Copy SystemUI.apk back to your device, make sure permissions are correct (644, -rw-r--r--)
Reboot device
Guide (Automated Install via Rom Toolbox):
Download attached Sense4Battery-RTB-**DPI.zip
Copy to /romtoolbox/icon-changer-backups on your SDCARD (internal storage by default)
Open Rom Toolbox
Slide to the Interface tab and click Statusbar Icons
In the menu, click Backups
Select the zip you downloaded (Sense4_Battery-RTB-**DPI.zip)
Select Restore
Select Install
Select Yes, Backup (incase something goes wrong)
Once it is finished, click Fast Reboot to reboot the shell.

HOW TO MODIFY THEME CHOOSER APKs (Windows only)
this thread was created to help my HUEsers modify my theme.apk, (may be applicable to other themes as well)
to get familiar and exposed on the contents of it and basic filenames / codes inside the apk,
because some users are not fully satisfied with my releases
some want additional stuffs added, some want to change some parts/areas, some want to remove specific apk being themed,
as much i want to help and provide modified themes for you, i may be busy most of the time,
and i can't even grant all your requests
so i decided to start the thread to help you guys, guide on how to mod it,
and who knows, one of these days
you will become one of the Recognized Themer of XDA,
enjoy and i hope you found this useful
WARNING!!!:
use this guide for your own use only, if you wish to release in public and start a new thread,

SETTING UP...
1. now that you have downloaded all the tools above, install jdk, sdk, and apk multitool one by one,
(instructions must be on their individual websites) you may want to install them all in the root of your drive C:
2. once you are done installing apk multitool, grab the aapt.exe you downloaded in the link above
(please thanked @titanic_fanatic on his post and work - this is a modified aapt.exe that lets you compile upper case package names)
and put/replaced existing aapt.exe in APK-Multi-Tool/other
LET"S DO IT!
decompiling theme (Hue.apk for ex)
1. put Hue.apk in APK-Multi-Tool/place-apk-here-for-modding
2. double click Script.bat in APK-Multi-Tool
3. press any key
4. press 9 (Decompile apk)
5. go to APK-Multi-Tool/projects and you will find a folder named Hue.apk
6. that's it, you have just successfully decompiled my theme and time to do the edits
7. don't close script.bat
modifying apk
1. this is the time you will do your modifications (changing/adding/deleting images and codes)
2. i will discussed most important parts of apk in post #2 to keep this instruction short and clean
3. don't close script.bat
compiling / signing / installing
1. on your phone, go to settings > developer options > and check usb debugging
2. connect your phone on your pc / laptop
3. now in Script.bat opened, select 15 (this will compile, sign and install your modified theme all at once at your phone)
4. that's it, check your phone using your modified theme
5. congratulations!
6. btw your modified apk is located in APK-Multi-Tool/place-apk-here-for-modding as signed_Hue.apk (you can rename it)

BASICS INSIDE THE APK
3 basic file types/extensions we will be dealing with most of the time
1. .xml - color codes, image redirections, are inside this file (use Notepadd++ to open such files)
2. .png - these are the images/icons we usually see on most part of the phone ui (open using photoshop/gimp and dont edit using paint or you will lose its transparency background)
3. .9.png - stretchable pngs that expand or shrink depending on the usage (these images has a black pixel boarder that needs to be preserved, or else you will be having error in compiling)
color codes (hex codes)
quick overview of color hexcodes (range - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F)
#FF000000 as an example (represents black while white is #FFFFFFFF)
FF or the first two letters of the code represents its transparency 00 means full transparent while FF is opaque (im using 88 or 80 for semi transparent)
next 6 digits are the RGB color code, look at this way #FFRRGGBB
if you want solid red, use #FFFF0000, solid green #FF00FF00, solid blue #FF0000FF
just play with the color codes (im sure you have just played with it in most of the rom options)
decompiled apk
once you decompiled apk, you will noticed a folder named res (this is our main concern, we will be working with this folder all the time)
inside the res folder...
there are lots of drawable-** folder that contains all of our images (.png and .9.png),
most of the icons are located in drawable-xhdpi and drawable-hdpi,
you can also find values folder containing some xmls such as
styles.xml - this xml is where i usually make my inverts of ui (from holo.light to holo for example)
drawables.xml - some color codes were redirected here
colors.xml - some of the hex codes inside styles.xml were redirected here, most color codes inside drawable folder and color folder are also redirected here, so i can only have one place of editing when converting color codes on my color versions of themes
next is the xml folder
xmls inside this folder controls the apps being themed, you can find package names of the apps as the xmls filenames
if you will noticed, there are some xmls here having upper cases, that's why we need the modified aapt.exe (again thanks titanic_fanatic)
last is the mipmap-** folder
this folder contains all the themed launcher icons, i already redirected all my themed app's launcher icons here
file names
how do i named the images? let's put an example
go to res/xml and look for com_android_calculator2.xml
now this is the xml that controls my themed calculator, if you open up the xml via Notepad++ you will notice the original png file names being replaced by my own themed png through a line code
this line for example (this is the delete icon in calculator)

IT'S MODDING TIME!
i will show you some examples and what file to edit with these mods
again file names of images may vary depending on theme,
but package name under res/xml are standard on all theme
before you begin modifying, delete Public.xml in res/values folder
remove themed launcher icons
delete these two folders
res/mipmap-hdpi
res/mipmap-xhdpi
remove themed specific apps
for example you don't want my themed keyboard and prefer stock aosp keyboard look
delete the xml of the apps you want to be removed, in our example keyboard which is
com_android_inputmethod_latin.xml in res/xml folder
change background of system and dialer
prepare your custom background (make sure you have the right size as per your screen resolution)
hdpi - 480x800
xhdpi - 640x960
and name it as
contacts_background_dial_holo_dark.png and framework_background_holo_dark.png
and replaced existing backgrounds in res/drawable-nodpi
change notification background
the image for that is system_notification_panel_bg.9.png located in res/drawable-xhdpi
note that this is a .9.png, be careful in editing and preserve the black 1px boarder of it
however you can bypass the image if you want to make it the stock look or pure black look
open com_android_systemui.xml in res/xml
look for the line

you can see that it was redirected to my themed image system_notification_panel_bg.9.png
if you prefer the stock background look, just delete that entire line
if you want it to be pure black, remove the redirection to the custom image and this time redirect it to hex code instead

change (non connected to google server) signal back to grey
download HueSilver.apk, rightclick and open archive using 7zip
go to res/drawable-xhdpi (for phone ui only, for tablet ui, go to res/drawable-sw720dp-xhdpi)
drag these icons outside the apk and replaced it on the apk you were modifying
(dragging existing images from the apk is only applicable to .png and not to .9.png)

try to update your framework-res.apk in /other folder
replaced it with your rom's framework-res.apk (android 4.2.2)

still no luck. i get framework-res.apk from my phone at folder /system/framework/ and copy to the other/ folder of apk multi tool, and try to decompile again, but still error.
Just changed background for dialer and settings:laugh:
Wow. I knew before its a lot of work what you do... but its huge work(after I saw how many .png`s there)!!!:good:

there are lots of images, and i already deleted thousands of repeated images and just redirect those
to make the file smaller,

download HueSilver.apk, rightclick and open archive using 7zip
go to res/drawable-xhdpi (for phone ui only, for tablet ui, go to res/drawable-sw720dp-xhdpi)
drag these icons outside the apk and replaced it on the apk you were modifying
(dragging existing images from the apk is only applicable to .png and not to .9.png)

[Q] Cm11 file setup

Here's my question I'm trying to theme cm11 from a stock based rom by swapping pngs from folder to folder like I've done with cm7, cm9,and cm10 but the phone I was using was pulling from the drawable/res/hdpi folder for pngs.
Where or what folder should I look into for the lg g2 to find what pngs it's pulling from?

Nevermind guys I found it out I think where to look, I'm trying to make an aroma installer so xxhdpi was what I used for the button layout so I'd be guessing that pngs would've pulled from that folder in a rom
