So my phone died and is now miraculously working. So now I am backing everything up in case it happens again.
Here's the thing. Google sync never works perfectly for me and the HTC backup doesn't either.
I've tried MyBackup in the past but whenever I used it it would mess up the contacts. It backed them all up but upon restoring each entry of a contact (i.e. home phone, mobile home, notes, etc.) became a new contact with that name. So instead of having one Bob in my contact list I would have six bobs, one with the cell number, another with an email, and so on.
I was wondering what backup apps you guys could recommend that restore the contacts properly. I only care about the contacts. MyBackup works well with SMS and call logs so if need be I can use different apps for different backups and what I need now is a good contact solution.
Thanks
Helium from Clockworkmod. Its the best method of backup for non rooted users IMHO. https://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
I have never experienced a problem restoring my Google account contacts, I take it you have removed the account and tried to set it up again to see if it will let you save the contacts. You can verify that they are saved if you log onto gmail when using a browser.

hello,
I have a problem, I installed an update and I do a wipe, but I have a backup nandroid, the problem is that the backup do not want to do and now I lost all my contact . is there a way to retrieve my contact list of saved nandroid.
MOD EDIT: REMOVED LINKS
if you have root install this app. it will backup all your stuff
since you have a nandroid backup, you should be just fine to retrieve the data. i highly recommend installing cyanogen's recovery image (link in my signature) and you can do the nandroid restore straight from recovery mode.

If you'd like to stay on XDA AS a member, i would highly suggest you STOP sharing pirated programs on this forum.
FINAL AND LAST WARNING!!!
Back to the question.. Is it really an issue? Within a few minutes of registering the device your contacts will load back in from GMail. If they don't, sounds like something is wrong.

Correct, all contact info should sync back from GMail. You can even export your GMail contacts to a file if you're super paranoid about losing them.

This is true, but since hes talking specifically about a nandroid restore, he may have customizations on his contacts (ringtones, etc) that he would otherwise have to manually reset. A nandroid restore would bring this back up to speed far faster than manually going through and setting everything.
Found out today it appears that if you sync your contacts with Google you cannot use them in Groups on the Galaxy S.
CS had backed up contacts from Hero to Google then when they came down into the Galaxy S they were all flagged as Google contacts and would not appear in the Groups add contact list.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
how to see the contacts on gmail sync?
when I put sim card in another phone, no contact ...

Open your contacts, click on Menu you should see "Display options". Click on it and expand your Google Email account and tehre should be a list of Group in your GMail Contact list. put the check mark on all of the sub group you have under GMail. Then all contact will show up.
I flashed a new rom and used titanium to restore my apps and data but I dont know what went wrong but all my events on my google calendar are gone now. I dont want to have to sit there and re add all my events. I can reload the titanium backup to see the events on my phone but when it syncs it all disappears.
Ive tried editing the events on my phone to make it try sync a change but that doesnt work :/
Has anyone had this sort of problem before?
Your events are stored online, similar to your Gmail, just make sure your account is signed in and syncing...

sync your calendar ?
They are not online and when I restore with titanium and sync it wont add them back online and it just deletes them from my phone
Hi all..
I've tried searching for answers to my question for ages and its a no-go so i'm posting it here.
So here's my problem. My contacts are synced on google (not phone or sim) and their names are not the same as in facebook. When I sign in to facebook, as usual we're given 3 choices:
- Sync All
- Sync with existing contacts
- Remove facebook data
If i choose the 2nd (sync with existing contacts), only a few gets synced as not all of my contact's names are the same on my phone and on facebook. So i choose Sync All, and then manually join the contacts.
I'm on Darky's 10.2, and on TiBu what system app should I backup the data so the contacts i joined manually are retained when I flash a new rom with a full wipe? If i just flash a new rom everything disappears even after i've signed in to google and synced all my contacts. All their pictures are gone.
BTW I dont use the samsung's built in SNS account and have even deleted them off my phone.
Should I backup the contacts application? I've been trying many things and all dont seem to work. I just dont know which system app data to backup.. Its a pain to rejoin each and every contact after every reflash (which I do a lot)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Titanium backup. It might be the greatest app for android. I have backed up with titanium then a full reset and full wipe flash then restore with titanium and it is as if nothing even happened. I have ran in to the issue with using a different Rom then the backup and restoring the system data can screw things up. So I just go into titanium and choose only my contacts, wifi and Bluetooth parings.

You've quoted a over year hold post, chances are that you won't be getting a answer from him eh.
Restoring a system app is ALWAYS a bad idea, so don't go for that option. I never looked for a option myself but there should be a way to manually backup your current contacts (with pictures and everything) to google.
I'm thinking of using the HTC Backup service.
My questions is what features are missing? I know that it doesn't backup photos and videos as these are backup-ed to Dropbox.
Do contacts still sync with the Google account (as Google backup is disabled) and what about the apps? If I restore from HTC do they install automatically?
Anything else I should know?
Thanks
use google backup. then you can restore to any android device, not just HTC. and yes it does contacts, and apps. its started to do app data too but i've never tested if that works.
I use htc backup because it saves blinkfeed setting and Im kinda ROMaholic that I flash roms 2-3 times a day so I dont need to set my blinkfeed everytime.
if you wanna switch to other brand, just change backup method in settings and back everything up with google before letting your phone go.

So if something happened to the One you wouldn't be able to use the HTC backup to another phone.

Are there any settings? Because I don't see any.
I want to try it, but I can't seem to choose what to backup or not.
I see it backup-ed to my Dropbox account but don't know what it did.
For example dictionary etc.

Unfortunately there is no real options to tailor your backup. HTC Back up, backups:
Home screen settings: These include your categories and headlines in HTC BlinkFeed, widgets, and Home screen layout.
Accounts and passwords: HTC Backup stores the login credentials for many popular email and social network accounts, including Exchange ActiveSync, Microsoft Hotmail, Flickr, LinkedIn, Evernote, and POP/IMAP.
Apps and settings: These include your web bookmarks, personal dictionary, Wi-Fi networks, TV remotes and viewing preferences, apps you've installed, grid size and sort order in the All apps view, and over 150 other settings.
When it has all been backed up it is encrypted and then sent to your Dropbox folder. What you see in your folder is encrypted files, so there is not much you can do with the files.
Hoped this has helped.
I reset my phone today to test the feature and I am very impressed with it. It restored everything perfectly except the grid size of the app drawer, I had to do that myself. All apps, settings, wi-fi networks and passwords, home screens with all shortcuts, widgets and folders that I created, blinkfeed and pretty much everything I normally spend hours re-customizing after a full reset. Text messages did not restore (I didn't think they would) but I had them backed up to my Handcent account. Bluetooth pairings also did not get restored but that's easy and fast.
Overall I am extremely impressed, it made doing a hard reset quite painless compared to what I usually go through.
I believe that the restore should also work on future versions of HTC phones so if you upgrade to a newer HTC you can restore all your apps and settings to the newer HTC device.
Did it backup and restore all your contacts ?
Thanks

Normally, you shall store your contacts in your Google account....
Any idea how to get back one of my contacts (there might be more) that just vanished the other day?
log on to contacts.google.com, from there you can restore previous versions of your contacts, make backup of current ones and export them too.
Ta. Will try that. Syncing my contacts didn't restore it.

Syncing doesn't restore contacts. It just sync it with Google servers and updates it as per changes on your phone.
Sent from my OnePlus3T using XDA Labs
Still don't understand why it disapeard
The usual explanation for contacts vanishing usually is when user deletes a sync service like an Exchange/Office 365 account and one or a couple of contacts exist in this realm making you "lose" them when account is no longer in the phone. But if the contacts where Google contacts that vanished it does sound strange to me if the vanish without some app interfering with these contacts, maybe..
It was a Google contact so no. Have reimported him now.
You can try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vjayraj.deletedcontacts it worked for me in the situation that i deleted a contact then wanted to restore it
