UPDATE: Online petition to att to unlock bootloaders - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Well sitting around today I figured I would e-mail samsung about the locked bootloader and how that would eventually kill off sales for those in the know on Modding, development and wanting ultimate control of there device. So I would suggest anyone who cares to should do the same. I think if we show them the love we have for Samsung devices as a community maybe they will rethink their strategy and start giving their fans what they want, and that is options, unlimited options to flash and mod the way we want. I mean heck isn't that what google released android for was to be open sourced. So please take time to send samsung an e-mail and voice your support to stop locking bootloaders and unlock our locked ones, cause we all know it's easier for them to do it and just pass it on to us than for a dev to do it and get nothing but thanks when I reality samsung should send him a check, but we know that won't happen.
UPDATE: Link to online petition below please sign and tell your friends. Also petition is linked to c.e.o. Randall Stephenson @ [email protected] so he will know of every signature we gain. So come on and let's try to get our device the freedom it and we deserve.

Samsung does not insist on locking the bootloaders. The carriers do. That's why both AT&T and Verizon bootloaders are lock, while Sprint and Tmobile and not. AT&T and Verizon's locked bootloaders have not dropped Samsung sales below that rival company, who leaves their bootloaders to be unlocked by the customer on that special webstite, whose sales of their top selling phone are fading based on what I am reading.

Did not know that. you would think samsung would be like "hey att don't do that people want access not restrictions" but like you said if the device is a top seller I guess on their end there is no reason to conform to what smaller groups of people like us think the state of the phone upon release should be. Well I'll send att an e-mail to might not do any good but I would like to try. Again if you support this send them(samsung, att, verizon, etc.) an e-mail and voice your response. Tell them we want freedom not a locked down p.o.s.

You must be new to this forum. They already have a petition for this, but maybe not to the CEO. It has not accomplished anything.

It received less than 500 signatures before there was any root, then once we finally got root, pretty much all support just stopped.

Thanks for swift kick in the nuts pal. Lol. New to s5 forum not xda. Well I'm trying spent all day on this so please at least take five minutes to sign it. In the time it takes to post here that's another signature we could have. Even if nothing happens at least pledge to switch to a less b.s. carrier. If anything declining profit margins should have some effect, at least you'd think.

I personally received a cease and desist letter for harassing the ceo's secretary about the locked bootloader on my LG g2. The bottom line is 5% or less modify their phones.1% will actually complain about it and I would bet less than 20% of that 1 percent would actually write a letter. Att doesn't care about the opinions of .20% of its customer base. The only way to get this to work is to unite across all devices with locked bootloader's on at&t.

So fight back. Sim unlock, switch carriers and stick it to the man. That's the only way I can think of getting our point across, falling short of waiting out your contract or paying ETF's(if u have good credit, I dont.lol). If I have to starting tomorrow I will reach out to other att customers with other models with Locked bootloaders. This needs to happen regardless what majority we are, we spent damn hard earned money for open source OS not a closed one and why should it be left up to someone here on xda or another dev site to unlock this mess.

I do stick it to the man, the man keeps giving me free stuff. The last phone I bought was the LG g2. After a few weeks I had a bad pixel so they gave me a brand new note 3. A month after that I talked them into a free galaxy gear. When the boredom kicked in I got "the man" to take the note 3 back and send me a good flex. I sold the watch. In June I once again told them I wasn't happy with the flex so they told me to pick any phone I wanted, I chose this phone. Now it is aggravating and I probably wasted hours of my time harassing them but it pays off.

This is all on the AT&T end of things. If they could come to an agreement to have something similar to what HTC has where you go to their website and agree to void your warranty then the site unlocks it that would be great. We need to put pressure on AT&T for something like that as it would not cause them to lose money or their government contracts. But like someone stated earlier our demographic is so small that they don't care. Normal people just care that their phones work and can take good pictures. I can tell you that back when the Motorola atrix came out there was a petition to also unlock the bootloader it got tons of signatures and even the attention of Motorola and AT&T enough so that they issued a statement that they would provide a solution to the locked bootloader and guess what, the solution never came but we did get their attention so it is possible.

Yea I'm kinda feeling the blues I come from a galaxy S4G from t-mobile they jacked up my bill so I jacked there phone. I quit paying for it ( the contract that is, bad credit here. can't wait for that financial system to crash) and did a network unlock and threw it on sprint prepaid. After that I learned what little I know about root, roms, and flashing. I've made a few themes for the S4G with u.o.t. but that's neither here nor there.
Now I move on and wouldn't you know the second smart phone I have ever had is locked down like a terrorist in Gitmo (I mean sheesh even they get light 1 hour a day).

Unlock HTC ONE?

I can't afford to pay $100 a month to Sprint so I want to know if there any options out there to unlock the phone or flash it over to another carrier. I don't know anything about this stuff and would really appreciate some answers.
Then why did you buy it? You know what's going to be much less affordable than your $100 per month? Your increased interest rates on anything you finance in the future since you jacked up your credit.

Now, there's no need to start lecturing. Sure, ideally OP wouldn't be in this situation, but things happen (job loss, medical, personal), so let's just see if we can be more helpful.
OP, generally Sprint phones are difficult to move. There are people that go to janky 3rd party carriers, but this is annoying and difficult. No matter what, you'll have to end up paying the ETF with Sprint to get out of that contract. Otherwise, you'll have a mark on your credit (which is not worth the $2-300).
You could think about going with Ting. They have a BYOD program, but none of the new phones are in the program. Perhaps in a year it will be available.
Lastly, $100/mo. seems high for Sprint service. Are you sure you looked at all the plans and your options? I, personally, am in a family plan with some family members, and it ends up being about $55/user, subsidized.

Here is the answer to your question.
guide how to flash to htc one (M7) to cricket or other carrier
Sprint phones are easily flashed to cricket and even when your bill or contract is burnt and sprint flags your esn unusable.
Is there a video or tutorial on how to flash the phone over?
If you want to use a GSM carrier, I wrote a simple app that will SIM unlock your phone...

Anyone thinking about jumping ship?

Seeing as how the Nexus 5 unlocked from the play store can work with Sprint, who here is planning on jumping to that phone? Pros/cons?
And with most gs4s selling on Craigslist in my area for 400, might end up being an even trade. Has me considering jumping to lg. Even though I've never had an lg device, my experience with the gnex was great.

I bailed
Expecting my N5 to reach me on Wednesday. I kept my S4 on MF9, rooted (didn't install MJA), and put it on CL clearly indicating that. I put it on there today for 500, and I have 2 offers (who indicated that they wanted it as it is - without installing 4.3 - must be familiar with the KNOX issues after installing MJA).
Of course things can change till money changes hands, but so far so good! Ordered N5 using discover card, for a 5% cashback, so that worked out even better.
so we can purchase the the device through play store and just transfer our sprint phone line?

Have a great day!

My crazy day getting a nexus 5!

OK I know that ALL the nexus 5 sold at T-Mobile, Sprint, best buy, etc are the SAME as Google play store.
I was in Houston to visit family yesterday, and sold my moto g, and moto x(att model) to my family friend and then figured "ya I could order the nexus on Google but since selling the moto's I would just be paying the tax for the 5!"
So I go to best buy, not in stock, then go to T-Mobile store....NEVER again!(only because their like 390 full price!)
First the guy said he couldn't sell me it cause it won't work on anything other than T-Mobile....... So I told him that I know it will work or I wouldn't be asking you to buy it.... Then the store demo I put my Sim in it and BAM! Getting LTE on straight talk att Sim! Then I show him and then he said the demo model works cause it one straight from the Google play store! LMAO WHAT!
So I leave go down the street to another T-Mobile store same story!
Then I finally went to a sprint store...
The guy was basically acting like I was stupid and he bet me it wouldn't work....so he sell me the phone (399) I put my Sim in the phone and by this time he called everybody else in the store to see if it was going to work! The of course it works, and he was like we'll it probably because it not activated on our network. Then he went on saying I couldn't sell that to anybody on sprint cause the phone will be blacklisted.......OR I said "it could be idk IT'S THE SAME PHONE THAT GOOGLE SELLS ON THE PLAY STORE!" and walk out
So I guess next time people just order from the play store unless your only going to pay tax for a brand new phone lol!

What? Out of all service companies, I can't believe T-Mobile would say that! That's crazy.
They probably don't want to sell their N5' s cause they know they're sold out on Google store and they want customers who buy the N5 to stay in their company. That's why whenever I go to my company (T-Mobile) I end up arguing with them, they seem to not have a lot of knowledge when it comes to Google phones.

Too many CSR are just dumb. But this is quite the funny story. Should've took that guy on the bet at the sprint store, I would've walked out with a free N5 I'll tell you what. And how slow was the store business wise for all them to huddle round you? They seriously had nothing else better to do?
Well the sprint store wasn't really busy at all. Had one customer leaving as I was walking in. But the T-Mobile store was actually quite busy which I was surprised bout. Tmobile works great in Houston and Dallas. But where I live their not even a store that's how bad it is!

Alternative: You can buy a T-Mobile S5, sim unlock and use on AT&T. T-Mo has unlocked bootloader...I did this and it works perfectly.

I know I'd be more than willing to do some seriously tedious code checking among other things if i knew it would help the cause.
Maybe buy some dynamite see if i can blow off the bootloader lock.. who knows?

The T-Mobile S5 is worth more because of the unlocked bootloader. You can sell the AT&T S5 for about $550 and get a mint T-Mobile S5 for the same price if you're lucky and negotiate on Swappa. Then you'll have to unlock it for about $30. Its all worth it in my opinion.

The thing is the T-Mobile S5 will almost always show a full signal bar. When I had the TMO S5 it would show 4-5 bars with a -100-110 dbm signal. ATT signal is much stronger and therefore it will almost always show five bars with a -90, -80-dbm signal.

Absolutely nothing. I personally don't think any developers even picked up the G900A because they knew it would be locked down. My advice: gt the TMO version and unlock it.
Lol

Gotta love the doom and gloom. I would hate to see how some of you guys would act waiting nearly half a year for an iPhone jailbreak...every single year.

I can see your point on this one. If the phone is unlocked then you'd be fine. You would be getting service with AT&T, not T-Mobile or Sprint lol.
What I'm kinda worried about is that the S5 becomes a phone with wasted potential kind of like the Optimus G was due to lack of root

You can also buy a metropcs galaxy s5 its more cheaper than the tmobile version and unlock and also you can flash the T-Mobile stock Odin and flash T-Mobile custom ROM ...

I have never understood the mentality of "just go buy it from another carrier." Some do not have $650 just laying around to make that happen. Another thing I don't seem to understand is all the dislike of subsidiaries. I have been with AT&T for over 10 years and never had an issue. My bill does not seem to be affected when I get an upgrade either, so I don't see the logic of paying full price for a phone from another carrier and remain on another one. It would seem like I am paying more out of pocket that way.

Tmobile

Good morning guys. I just made the jump from AT&T and I was wondering does tmobile update their phones for the life of the device or like AT&T does that they update phones 3 times then concentrate on newer devices? Please let me know. Thanks in advance

"...they update phones 3 times then concentrate on newer devices..."
Sad but true. The Note 2 I recently sold was still stuck on Jelly Bean and Note 2 owners were promised KitKat from T-Mobile, never received the update. And now there is no news of Lollipop for the T-Mobile Note 2.
I had the AT&T Note 4, but returned it, mainly due to the fact that it was not developer-support. Because I'm on the JUMP! Program, I'll most likely end up changing my device every 6-8 months or so, therefore the update schedule doesn't and shouldn't hurt me anymore.

Thanks for the reply man. It's messed up the American companies do this. The international versions of the phone that we stopped receiving updates for here in the u.s are still receiving updates internationally. Even though I switched from AT&T cause I'm tired of locked bootloaders. I think if you own a device you should have the freedom to do with it as you please. ?

Take that statement to the Supreme Court. FCC needs to look over this, in addition to Net Neutrality, haha.

who says you cant "do with it as you please"
you just wont get carrier provided updates after awhile, but you are free to do anything you want to your phone, you just have to deal with the consequences if you break/ruin/brick it..
