I bought a new Note 3 - like case for my Note 2 from aliexpress.com. It looks great and works well. Although, theres an issue with it (or the phone's sensor). The proximity sensor doesn't detect the closed cover when it touches the sensor (or when it's very close to it). This is explained in the YouTube video below. Please check and post your responses. Also, try the apk given in the link description there, and post your valuable feedback.. Thank You!:good:

The problem originates from the dark color of the case. In order to solve the problem, just cut out a small strip of a light colored (white or light yellow) sticky paper, and stick it to the internal side of the case in such a way that it comes exactly on the proximity sensor when the case is closed. You will see that it is working.
EDIT: The apk is also problematic. I checked it with my cover (I have the same cover, but its internal color is white). It closes the screen perfectly but when I open it, it turns the screen on then immediately off. I have to close and open it to turn the screen on. What I suggest is you use "Style View Cover" apk from googleplay. I am using it without any problem.

Hi guys
I am not sure if this has been posted before, i did a quick search but nothing shows up.
Sometimes If I hold the pen close enough (but without touching) the screen would annoyingly picks it up. The problem is way more apparent if I hold the phone upside down, with the screen facing downwards and holding the pen inclined at an angle. Is this a common problem?
I have a video link but unfortunately I cant post the link here it wouldn't let me. Go to youtube and search "Galaxy note s-pen problem" the one by dudelmt

Wacom styluses are magnetic based, not capacitive, so technically it doesn't need to touch the screen. You can place a piece of paper over it and trace images for example.
I can't reproduce what you are seeing though. If I open s-memo, and place the stylus in contact with the screen with no pressure, it doesn't trace.
Just watched the video - holy cow, your pen is nowhere close to the note. wow. it looks like it's a good 1.5 cm or so.

For the lazy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VfkXo0KU5c&sns=em
Can not reproduce this on my device. Sounds like some electronic magnet issues or perhaps some other pen?? Anyways, sounds like you should get your device replaced unless you wish to keep it as a Magical Note ;-)
No really can not reproduce your issue on my note.
Do you use your phone upside down often?
(really tired and sarcastic, I know it occurs right side up too )
Faulty Pen
You have a faulty pen! Your pressure sensor from pen's tip is defective, jammed, or maybe only the white tip is physically stuck.
Everybody could reproduce this behavior by putting the pen close to screen, with memo app running, and applying pressure on pen's tip with your finger/nail.
So it's normal for the S-pen not to register if there is no pressure applied despite contact? Because that is what is happening with my s-pen. There is contact, no pressure, and it does not register. Is this how it is suppose to work?
Also, does the S-pen have a very faint click or sound when applying pressure like it is activating a pressure sensitive "something".
Thanks
Same problem here.

I contacted Samsung for replace the Pen, but they told me that is the first time they receive this type of problem.. so.. they will tell me something after some check..
Same problem for me, noticed that it's usually after the first time you touch the screen with the pen, like it still thinks the pen is touching even though its not. I'll log it with Samsung too see if they give me the same 'haven't seen this before' line.
I also have the same issue, it's rather annoying.
Will play around and see what I can find out.
Did Someone find a replace for the S-Pen?
Same problem here, appears to be worse when you first start using the pen. They should add a calibration option for the pressure to fix this, i think its now auto calibrating and that's why the problem looks worse at start.
FIXED- S Pen Problems...
Hi guys,
I had the same problem of the S Pen drawing while hovering about 15mm above the screen, I managed to fix it but it ain't easy....
It involves pulling the pen apart and there are tiny parts in there!
I am kicking myself I did not take photos, but I honestly didn't think I would get it to work again...
If anyone is still having probs, I can make up a tutorial of what you need to do.
Atleast you MAY not have to buy another S Pen.
Cheers,
Dan.

S-Pen repair tutorial- not for the faint-heated
OK...
Now I believe everyone that is having problems has at one time or another accidently or on purpose pulled the rear end out.
From what I have seen you CANNOT replicate this fault without that happenning.
Using a small blade prise the button from the Spen starting at the rear end.
The button will flex and pop out.
Pull the rear end off the pen (again ) now CAREFULLY and into a small tray if possible, turn the pen upside down and the 'bits' will come out, they are:
white nib
tiny O ring
tiny disk with nob one end and hole the other
electronics with button
What had happened on mine is that the o ring, disk and nib had pulled apart so that the disk and the wire-wound rod were always in contact so the Note always thought that the pen was in contact with the screen.
The correct order of bits is:
Nib-Disk-O Ring- Rest of electronics...
you will see the nib has a nob that will locate into the disk, the other side of the disk will hold the oring and all this sits against the wire-wound rod.
NO I AM NOT PULLING MINE APART AGAIN FOR PICS!!!
I put the electronics back in first and then using tweezers put the other bits back in through the button hole before carefully sliding it all back to the nib-end of the pen.
The button then pushes back in and locks.
Now, I a happy to answer questions, or if you like, and if you trust me, I am happy to have you send your pen to me here in Australia and I will repair it if i can.
Mine has been 100% since I did this...
Hope this helps!
Dan.
This sounds like an individual problem. For if the Note was faulty as described then it would have been noticed by the 80% in the poll here who like me think the note is pretty perfect.
Individuals and S Pen failures
I agree Gaugerer, it seems though that more and more individuals are finding this problem as more and more notes are sold...
Atleast it is fixable without the exhorbitant price asked for for a replacement stylus.
Cheers, Dan.
Hi I am thinking of also getting a Note and thus I went to a store for trying it out since I want to use it esp. also for taling notes during my meetings.
Thus the S-Pen is one of my keys in the decision and it did disappoint me:
I tried writing some text in the S-note app and when ever I finished a word and raised the pen the line is still drawn further and thus the text was not quite readable.
Same happens when I use the handwriting field at the bottom (instead of the screen keyboard). Then due to the lines being drawn further when the pen does not touch the screen, the recognition puts together the words.
So I think the problem is facing on many devices.
Does anyone ever get a better / more in-details answer from Samsung? Or should we one by one contact their support?

I contacted "Samsung Exclusive Italy" but they simply told me that check for this problem and recall me. I Never received a call from them.
Thanks to heelerdog for the tutorial, but i dont understand well english, and without some pics I'm afraid to break the S-pen
I don't have the required number of posts to insert a link, but I uploaded a clip on you tube so you can clearly see the problem (just type "weird light under glass incredible s" in the search bar)
I had to send my Incredible S in for repair because it stopped charging. That was fixed but then it wouldn't read my SIM card. I sent it back and that was fixed but now I notice this rapidly flashing reddish light (color looks different because of video quality I guess) that appears to be behind the glass near the top of the phone, slightly to the left of the "htc" logo. It is certainly not the LED; is it some other light I don't know about?!? This light come and go; it will stop if I turn the phone off but eventually starts up again. I called HTC and they had no idea and weren't allowed to access YouTube to look at the clip I uploaded. Any suggestions? There are no other problems with the phone but I don't want to ignore this if it's a red flag. If this is indeed a light indicating something, the only thing I can think of is that it is a "tech" light that only a specialist would recognize as meaning some internal part has to be replaced. There's no mention of it in the user manual.
That is the proximity sensor. Check whether you have any apps that is using the proximity sensor. ie. Pocket locker
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA
That's definitely the proximity sensor!!! U can also see it normally during a call when its dark!!! Does your phone screen turn off when u cover that light??
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using Tapatalk
as the others have said, that's the proximity sensor. It detects if there is anything near it, like when you put the phone to your ear when talking on it.
In the "talking on the phone case", if it detects something near, it will put the screen into sleep mode so you don't accidentally push buttons with your cheek or similar.
As am84496 said, something is using the sensor and checking for proximity.
Thanks for the responses. You're definitely right. I d/led "proximity sensor finder" and the light came on when the application was started and went off when it was closed. I don't know what application(s) used it before though. Is there any way to find out what application is using the proximity sensor at a given time? Someone suggested to me that it was a sensor and that it might have shorted out. But I guess that isn't likely right? And my screen didn't turn off when I covered it; it would only do that during a call wouldn't it?

It's infrared
I found out that whenever a magnet is close to the screen (like the ones to be found in auto wake/sleep smart covers ) the screen will go off, as it should, but wakes up again after 10 seconds.
It will keep doing that forever: wake up, sleep due to inactivity, wake up, sleep, etc etc. It is obvious that the magnet is somehow triggering the screen to wake up.
You can easily reproduce this by placing a white board magnet on the device (place it between the hours and minutes of the lockscreen clock). Just wait and see what happens.
This means that you are certain to drain your battery when your phone is idle, sitting in a smart cover like the official one from Casemate.
I would love to use the smart wake, it worked flawlessly on the Nexus 5 but works only as a battery drainer on the N6
Is there anything that can be done about it? or is it a hardware issue?

The magnet sensor of the N6 is under the M logo at the back.
When there is a magnet on the M or there above on the display the screen is switched off. And stays off, but . . . a weak magnet that moves a bit away may cause the problem you described.
The magnet sensor cannot be disabled (could not find an app). The solution is to remove the magnet from the cover.
BTW this may occur also with a (belt) case that has a magnet closure. That closure must be about 1 cm from the M logo.

Thats interesting, i didnt know the sensor as at the back. When i place the magnet there, the behavior is different. It does not go on entirely, instead it goes to ambient display. But not consistently... Weird.
Anyway i purchased some cheap neodyium magnets from eBay that are supposed to be quite strong, maybe that will have the desired effect. I plan to attach them to my spigen cover.

If you want to be sure that the magnet sensor is active (screen off) you need probably more magnets.

That's OK, they come in ten
I've observed this too. I wrote a Tasker app to sound a notification everytime the screen turned on (since my casemate flip case was closed) just to prove I wasn't crazy. mine turns on with every magnet (auto sleep) case I've tried. this is with stock software.
after posting about this issue in one of the case threads in the nexus 6 accessories forum, it turned out not everyone experienced this issue. or at least they didn't know they did.
I just wanna know how Google can even sell the casemate case in the play store when this issue exists (at least for some)...
Xposed has a module that turns off the magnetic sensor. I have no idea if it works or not so look at the thread for it. My phone is naked so I don't have this problem.

On the hard cover I mounted a small round metal plate (glue) at the same height as the M-logo at the back.
I did choose that place, because it is above the coil for wireless charging.
But. . . . the problem is that exactly there the magnet sensor is located.
So when the N6 was mounted at the neodymium magnet, the screen becomes black.
The first thing I tried is to disable the magnetic sensor with the xposed-module. Unfortunately is does not work on the N6 with Lollipop.
Xposed need to be updated.
My hardware solution is to glue the metal plate on the cover, about 1 cm below the M-logo. And then wireless charging is not possible (metal becomes hot).
I am using at the moment two ultra thin covers for the N6. One with metal for car use and another original to allow wireless charging.
Same problem with the official case mate cover, it is useless. I pulled mine from a shelf this week wondering why I wasn't using it, two days later "ahh, now I remember...". One of the many reasons I don't like this phone. Generally, Motorola does a nice job but when they don't, the phones are real duds. At least this problem is better than those with the screen protectors keeping the screen off when you make a call.
Someone mentioned a fix using gravity box for the ambient display activating in a pocket and causing phone calls and texts inadvertently; I think it was setting to keep the screen off if the proximity sensor was active, like in a pocket. It would probably work for this problem too.

When a magnet stays close enough to the M-logo there is no problem. But most leather cases are flexible. Little movings will continuously activate and deactivate the magnet sensor. So the screen is frequently tuned on.
We need a software solution that turns the magnet sensor completely off.
In the meantime you need to remove the magnet from the case/cover and replace it with Velcro.
In some types of cases the magnet is not in the center. Put the N6 in the case with the M-logo turned away from the magnet.
When the magnet is about 1 cm away from the M-logo, the magnet sensor is not activated.

The update really didn't make a difference for this but I did notice that for the official cover, either I received a defective one or the magnet is extremely weak. Velcro won't help as it doesn't have a flap to keep it closed. I guess the prosimity sensor only works with a phone call.
Hey Everyone!
I am new to this site so pl bear with me if I am posting some wrong thing.
Got MOTO X Verizon running on HSPA in INDIA. Everything seemed to work good.
Suddenly after 3 days of normal use (no dropping, no dumping, no water damage), screen started to garble at uneven intervals.
With all the pain to search for the problem all over the internet I at last (i think) solved the problem.
For this I had disassembled the screen and motherboard and just pressed the golden sticker (above the inter-connecting cable on the back of the screen)
Screen works fine now, but I guess I screwed up the proximity sensor mounted on the motherboard (seemingly irreplaceable.)
When calling the screen goes black etc...( i know this issue has been cited many times...mine is different I believe)
This was working when i got the phone (waving my hand always used to start the active display).
I checked my settings for Active display, got numerous apps for the the proximity sensor testing. [ Phone Tester shows proximity FAR and does not change that value whatever i do; "Proximity Sensor Finder" shows 3.0 cm last value and does not change ever either]
Then I tried everything from the rubber gasket installation to a hard reset, factory reset and what not.(thanks to tonnes of websites and people helping all over the world)
NO LUCK!
I also noticed that the LED beside the sensor used to blink which has actually stopped. LIGHT sensor and all others are working nicely.
This is where my issue lies :silly: : " Has anyone got this type of problem? Has the golden sticker on the right top corner on the back of the screen anything to do with the RED LED of the proximity? I tried all dialers, all possible ways to bypass the Proximity but invain. I am not wishing to root this phone and I am not good with coding either. Can this be a software issue? (running 4.4.4).Is there a calibrator out there to rejuvenate my proximity?
PLEASE HELP!!
For the time being I am using bluetooth headsets (where the screen remains open).
In Kitkat?

This feature is gone with Lollipop though...
And I read you're on kitkat, but really there was a LED blinking there???
I own an xt1060. There is an LED there, but its always been less than useless for me. It never turns on. Ever. Not for calls (missed or otherwise), notifications, or charging. I've often wondered why it's there.
I can make it work in Cyanogenmod. Any stock ROM renders it useless.

Exactly the same small thing I m taking about.. God knows I dropped it or not... But when I opened it for the 4th tym... I noticed was not there.. Then I did not get it anywhere in sale and so replaced it with a small white rubber piece with 2 similarly cut holes. No luck. Where did u get it from?
BTW I believe it will make the proximity work only if the led on its left side blinks. That works like a transmitter and receive I guess.
My led won't even flash for once..
I plead to all the genius developers to device an app for proximity bypass.

You seem to not understand that even you have cut a replacement gasket, it may look perfect to you, but it can easily block the proximity and that's about it.
You should try with original one, then start pulling off conclusions if the sensors are defective or not.
Why don't you run a dry test without the gasket?

If sensor is working each time the value should change at least a bit when open to light without gasket.

By dry test I meant to test it without putting the display/frame over the board and test it that way. If it's not defective you should get proper readings off it.
Has anyone got a flip cover for this phone that turns the screen off when you close it? Various reviews mention this phone has a hall sensor (Eg. nokiamob.net review). I installed a multi-sensor test app and can see a magnetic sensor there that shows changing readings when I waive a magnet over it, but opening or closing the case does not affect the screen. This work for anyone ?

I've been looking into the cases of this phone since i got it on the first day of launch. Sadly to date there is none. Maybe Nokia will release a case that does so and enable thay feature in a future update.
