Is it possible to use other lockscreens? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that our bootloader is locked, which restricts us from using other kernels, which in turn means that we are unable to use other ROM's like CM or AOSP. I've also noticed that all the current roms are still reliant upon the underlying touchwiz to function instead of changing to AOSP style system/systemui etc. I am assuming this is because it is tied directly to the kernel in some way. My question is basically: is the lock screen also tied to touchwiz? I would like very much to use the plain and simple AOSP or CM lockscreen.
Additionally, does anyone know of a way to bypass pin/pattern/lock while having a VPN installed? I tried using a couple lockscreens from the appstore, but I always end up with a double lockscreen because I cannot disable the default lock screen (I am on DynamicKat 4). I searched multiple threads and tried using one of the "disable exchange and admin requirements" mods, but it didn't seem to do anything for me. Any one know of a solution to either of these problems?

Exchange Lockscreen disable

Hi,
I have seen numerous threads on other phones for people wanting to bypass the exchange required password lock screen
I would also like to avoid having to put my password in all the time
The phone is rooted on CM9. Using the stock applications.
Have seen one post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452&page=46
I'm wondering if this process can be applied to cm9 sgs or not? and if not, if anyone has an alternative approach.
Cheers

Lock Sceen App Suggestions

Does anyone know of a lock screen app that allows for different user logins? For example, I can set a password for myself which allows full access to all features and apps. I can setup a secondary login password that locks almost everything down with the exception of a few apps. Is there anything out there like that?
What you've described sounds like the native Android multi-user support. Officially Google only enabled this for tablets. A quick Google pulled up a thread about a mod for another phone. I've flashed too many ROMs to remember if I only saw the Settings > Users option on my tablet, but maybe one of the CM/PA based ROMs have this feature?

Nexus 4 & 5 security vulnerability uncovered

A Security researcher andhacker, named John Gordon, has found an easy way to bypass the security of locked smartphones running Android 5.0 and 5.1 (Build LMY48M). Many of us use various security locks on our devices like Pattern lock, PIN lock and Password lock in order to protect the privacy of our devices. However, a vulnerability could now allow anyone to take your Android smartphone (5.0 build LMY48I) with locked screen, perform a "MAGIC TRICK" and as a result crash the user interface (UI) for the password screen and gain access to your device.
The vulnerability, assigned CVE-2015-3860, has been dubbed as "Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability in Lockscreen".
How the Attack Works?
The secret behind the researcher's "MAGIC TRICK" is as follows:
Get the device and open the Emergency dialer screen. Type a long string of numbers or special characters in the input field and copy-n-paste a long string continuously till its limit exhausts.
Now, copy that large string. Open up the camera app accessible without a lock. Drag the notification bar and push the settings icon, which will show a prompt for the password.
Now, paste the earlier copied string continuously to the input field of the password, to create an even larger string.
Come back to camera and divert yourself towards clicking pictures or increasing/decreasing the volume button with simultaneously tapping the password input field containing the large string in multiple places.
All this is done to make the camera app crash. Further, you will notice the soft buttons (home and back button) at the bottom of the screen will disappear, which is an indication that will enable the app to crash.
At this time, stop your actions and wait for the camera app to become unresponsive.
After a moment, the app will crash and get you to the Home Screen of the device with all the encrypted and unencrypted data.
Now without wasting time go to Settings > Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging and control the device by installing the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) utility.
In addition to this, if we notice the number of users with Android 5.0 and 5.1 with hardware compatibility as Nexus 4 and software installed as Google factory image - occam 5.1.1 (LMY47V) are less.
Therefore, the risk associated will affect those users only.
Furthermore, for those users we have a good news that is - the patch has released for the vulnerability and is made public by Google.
My question is, will it also affect other L users???
First off:
That text formatting,</thread> also, this will affect anyone running Roms with pretty much unaltered SystemUI based on 5.1.1_r8 (or lower)
Roms that alter heavily SystemUI (i.e samsung and lg stock roms) are unaffected. hence this issue didnt get a wide spread across news sites

Thanks for informing me. But sure that WILL affect users of CyanogenMod, Cataclysm and other non-modded AOSP based ROMs.

Cm has already merged r14 so its safe, cataclysm is based stock roms, so if it has a version for the lastest, then its also safe.
any rom with code base post r8 its safe, which afaik should be a lot of them.RR, rastapop,omni,cm,chroma,D.U. are the ones i remember that has the fix
if you want a deeper look, see if the rom has this fix

Whew. Now as I think, I remember my cousin's N5 getting a ~100 MB FOTA update, maybe that includes the r14 fix.

Does anyone know how to password protect Nova Launcher settings?

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. In fact, this is my very first post here. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of a way to lock the settings of Nova Launcher? I've tried a number of circumventing attempts to try and do this very thing. I find it incredibly difficult to fathom that the dev of such a great launcher, has never incorporated this option in the app. Especially since, one would think it an important part of such an app, since if you screen unlock your device for someone to use, then unbeknownst to you, they either intentionally or inadvertently, change your Nova settings.
I tried using a few different app locks out there, and despite Nova Settings widget sitting in the drawer, those app locks don't recognise the widget as a seperate entity in the list of apps to lock, that they bring up, from your device. Instead, only the Nova Launcher widget itself shows. But if I select it, any app lock will just lock the whole launcher and I need to unlock the launcher every single time I do anything on it. And that is tediously annoying!
I know that the dev was away on personal matters for a long while in the past and subsequently had not worked on updates for that time. He had responded to my inquiry about this several months back citing that he may include settings password protection in the future.
I have a Samsung GS4 dual sim. It is rooted, and I have Xposed Framework and several working modules on the phone. My apologies if this post is too long. I'm new and will aim to keep queries shorter in future.
been years used nova launcher and never found something like password protected, only found lock desktop. maybe you can email dev to add this features

Advice before I root

Hi All,
It's been quite a few years since I last rerooted a phone - I've found I just didn't really need to with Nexus devices, but since the next Nexuses don't have wireless charging, I've decided to pick up a Note 5.
It's a good phone, I really like it so far, but there are enough things niggling me about it, I think I will root this time. If anyone can provide advice on any of the following list I'd really appreciate it!
1. I see Dr Ketan's thread on the matter (http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/how-to-root-note-5-t3205073) which seems doable, and as complex as I remember. Has anyone tried one-click rooting and can comment on reliability? I'm all for just getting easy root access... For reference I have the SM-N920I. I also see "tripping Knox" a lot, but I have no idea what the means. Last person I asked said "I can't say if that is a good or bad for your specific situation" which makes me think they didn't understand my question.
2. I don't like TouchWiz. It's OK, but I much prefer stock, or, what I'm doing at the moment: Action Launcher 3. I prefer the stock dialer, and the stock quick menu (when you pull-down notification bar). Can I flash a stock ROM onto the Note 5? I mean, not stock-like like the popular MODs (Cyanogen for example) but something that is practically stock? I may end up going with something like Cyanogen, but I'd just like to know what's out there along those lines.
3. Having said that I don't like TouchWiz, and might install a new ROM, there are many things I do like about this device's interface: The SPen's overlay/menu is handy. The fact it brings up a notepad-like app if you pop the SPen out when the screen is off, one-hand mode (note: I have found an XPosed Module for this), the fingerprint scanner, the camera app, the S Planner app, the Home button shortcuts (single click->home; double-click->camera; triple-click->one handed mode) ... all things I assume I'll lose if I flash away Touch Wiz. However, perhaps I can get some (or all) of these things back? If so ... how? e.g. It looks like one-handed mode could be acheived with an XPosed module, and the home-button shortcuts with a launcher (I think Action Launcher can over ride this...)
4. Always listening Google Now. At the moment I have fingerprint scanner lockscreen security, always listening S Voice, and Google Now "from any screen." It... kinda works. But I can't see any reason why Google Now shouldn't just be always listening, and using a Trusted Voice allow me to throw voice commands at my device at any time. At the moment only S Voice is always listening... and even if I have the screen on, trusted voice doesn't seem to be able to get through the fingerprint security anyway. Ironically if I ask S Voice to launch Google Voice Search... it ploughs through in that scenario. Ultimate goal: Have Google Now always listening, and use Trusted Voice to get past the lockscreen, which would typically be secured with a fingerprint scanner.
If you can answer, or provide feedback on any of these queries, it'd be much appreciated!

1. Rooting is easy on the 920I. Just follow the instructions. As for tripping Knox, Knox is a security system which you may or may not use. Many don't but some people and enterprises do. Knox is also required for Samsung Pay which is currently rolling out. As soon as you root Knox will be disabled and a flag will be tripped which cannot be reset - thus once you root, that is that. Whoever said that they don't know whether you use Knox was absolutely right. The most obvious case is that if you want to use Samsung Pay, don't root.
Two things: when you root, make sure you backup your EFS. Also have a look around for which kernel you are going to install. I use arter 7.0 at the moment.
2 and 3. Experiment with other launchers and see what you like. I don't like touchwiz but I do like the spen integration. Same for ROMs - have a good look around before you root to see what you like. I prefer Dr ketan L3 but it's all personal choice.
