The inner child in me is tempted... - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

But the adult knows my wife won't approve. Bought two nook HDS awhile ago. Mine, i immediately installed cm11 on the SD and run off that. Meanwhile I've left hers alone. Hers started randomly rebooting itself. Should I convince her to just let me root it and install cm11 and then download the nook app for her or is there a known fix for stock p.o.s. on it? I guess it might be important to say she's an iPhone user and does not like change. I've been at work all day and she approached me now about it as if I have a magic wand and can fix it asap. Seeing how I rarely use mine anymore due to upgrading to my note 10.1 and installing cyanogenmod, give her mine and say stfu? Lol but seriously...is there a fix for a stock nook HD without modifying it?
Sent from my GT-N8013

Yes. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD per item 1a. Use that to flash the plain stock zip from item 6 followed by a factory reset with CWM. It will be back like it was out of the box and she can set it up again.

I can do a factory reset via the button combo option... Or is it possible its corrupted there too?

Not a button combo, but you can try an erase and deregister in settings.

Really? Then what's the factory reset option when holding power home and volume up? Power to exit...home to reset

That resets but does not deregister. But that may fix it. The erase and deregister is a setting in stock. But that button combo is wrong. You do not need the volume up, just power and home.

What does deregistering do? I'm not following why there's a need to unregister the device with Barnes and noble when this happens to be a software/hardware conflict or something. I figured out a way to replicate it. Downloaded clean master from the play store and tried to free up memory. Reboots every time. Is there a recovery mode yo clear cache/dalvik?

The deregister removes the registration from the B&N servers. You probably don't need to do that. I was just explaining the difference between erase and deregister and factory reset. You usually only do that when you want to transfer ownership to someone else. And no, there is no recovery mode to clear cache/dalvik. It only has stock recovery which is that thing that says factory reset or not. But a factory reset does clear cache/dalvik (along with everything else).

[Q] Question About Returning Phone

I unbricked my phone by emergency flashing to V4 using the guide. I was stuck in test mode. Is my phone completely standard now? Should I do anything else before sending it back?
Try to boot into CMW by holding power and volume down. If it loads cmw then you're not stock. Or if you are able to update software over the air.

It asked for a factory reset when I did the power and volume. I cannot get updates over the air. I must me back to stock.
I'd you can't get updates then you're not stock. You are most likely rooted still. Try running the All in One that SPC Hicks made. And un root with that.

Use the volume and power button to get to where it asks about factory resetting. Then confirm twice. If you factory reset the phone then you're good. if it boots to cwm, then you still have some work to do.
To check for root, download root checker from the market.

I'm confused as to how to install factory rom. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Is my Nexus completely dead?

Long post but can't really shorten it.
32GB wifi Nexus, rooted and was running Liquid Smooth ROM and Motley kernel, went to update the ROM to rc9 version ,anytime I updated previously I never done full wipe unless using different ROM, anyway flashed the ROM and the gaaps with it and rebooted, immediately and prompted to me to use either apex or Holo HD I choose Holo HD got error saying system ui not responding, tried apex and got the same.
I was on the main screen but couldn't access it, yet I could pull down and enter into settings, everything else looked to be ok, so rebooted back to recovery and tried fixing permission, rebooted and got the same so I though I'll be just restore my nandroid backup, to my astonishment all the data had been wiped, I didn't do a wipe at all so I'm baffled how this happened.
Anyway I done a factory reset and rebooted and went through the setup, got the same system ui not responding, went to settings which could still access, apps and un installed both Apex and Holo HD noticed that Liquid Smooth rc9 had installed but instead of showing the cm kernel it still showed motley kernel.
Back to recovery, factory reset twice, wiped cache and dalvik, rebooted, went through set up process, same system ui error again, went to settings, erased all data, tablet rebooted, set up process same again, system ui, so I'm getting worried so back to recovery and this time I selected format system, data and sd, card and now I think I've completely fuc#ed it up as it just hangs at the Google screen and has stayed like that for over 30 minutes.
Previously asides from the occasional force close issue in the 2 months I've had the Nexus not really had a problem with it and whilst I'm no developer or techy geek I'm certainly no noob when it comes to this type of thing but I'm very concerned now and hoping someone can be of assistance as I sold laptop and primary just use my Nexus (and Galaxy S3)
Thanks

Strange.. But I didn't understand well, after wiping /system, did you flash the ROM back ?
I think you should flash 4.2.1 factory image using toolkit or whatever, then root etc..again
No all the data had been wiped this is what is baffling me, I didn't do a factory reset I just flashed the ROM and gaaps, as I said initially it was the system ui error I was getting but I think I've fucjed it up by formatting the system, data and sd card as all I can see now is the Google screen at boot, I can still get into clock work mod recovery but I've exhausted all avenues as it were, is there any hope I can get it back working again?

Yes ! Really easy to use. You'll just have to put the tab into fastboot mode give it a try I'm pretty sure it will solve everything and you'll start back with good bases as it is full stock !

Cheers but I don't see anything in clockwork mod recovery for fastboot mode, I'll go to an Internet cafe tomorrow and do it if I could just get specific instructions.

First Download and install the fastboot drivers...Download the stock Image here:-
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
then hold volume-(Down) Button and while holding the Button power on the device..it will take you into the bootloader. Now conne4ct the nexus to your PC...Now extract the file you downloaded (the Stock image)..keep extracting the files till you get the system.img file.Use fastboot to flash that(the command):
fastboot flash system system.img
Boot into fast boot, push a stock image. Ta da. Easy stuff. The basics.

CWM question

I have read everything I can find and I am still confused. I built a bootable CWM card for the HD+ using the root and extras thread and that works fine. I downloaded cwm-recovery-ovation-2.zip and using the aforementioned card wrote the new boot loader and it says it was successful yet I can't boot into recovery. Am I using the right file is there something else that needs to be done?

OK maybe that is my issue. On my last tablet and my phone I hold down a couple of keys and I can get to CWM. I take it that is not true with the HD+?

It is true, you just have to know which keys. Hold power and the n key together for a few seconds when it first starts booting. Release before it turns itself off and it should boot to recovery. If the flash took, it boots to CWM. If it did not take, it boots to stock recovery and asks if you want to clear data.

Thanks again man! I got it. You have to turn it on first, then hold down the "n" key, then hold down power again for about 5 seconds. I am used to my other devices you start with the device off not booting up.
Hopefully this will help someone else. I am doing a backup now so I can start playing without worry.

help! wont turn on or go into recovery

I can't seem to get my nook he plus to turn on after I try to do a hard reboot I get a small green and purple square in the middle of screen that stays for like 5 seconds then it just turns off .any ideas?
i have the same thing happening to me. i did get it to show the nook logo, then black screen for a second, then cyanogenmod then reboot.
i only got it to do that after having it charge for 3 hours.
i swear i will have EVERYTHING password protected from now on, since some little nephew of mine was monkeying around with it before it started this.

What you are seeing is the nook trying to repair itself with stock recovery (it is going into recovery, stock recovery). It is apparently not successful in completing the repair.
Have you tried a bootable CWM SD? Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature to make one.

App for getting into Recovery

I have rooted my Nook to Stock rooted with Emmc CWM recovery. I'm not sure how to get into it on reboot I think it using the home key but isn't the easiest for me to do. So I'm wondering if anyone knows about a shutdown app that will have the recovery option added in.
Thanks
Get the app "reboot to recovery" by wikilab.de. It is the only one that works on this device. And it only works if it is rooted. It does not have shutdown, only recovery. Try "Quickboot" by Sirius for shutdown, but its reboot option does not work on the HD/HD+.

Boot from power off holding the power and n buttons simultaneously. After a few seconds release the power button before it turns itself off again, followed a couple of seconds later by releasing the n button. It should then boot into recovery (either stock, CWM or TWRP, whichever you have installed).

Yup that worked Doing another backup thanks again.
I really like this rooted Stock rom best. Its stable and I'm able to make it look like I want it to.
Thanks Again.
