Start HD+ with custom rom from SD without rooting device? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I have a HD+ and am very happy with it (perfect price/value ratio!).
I mainly use it for movies and to read.
So basically I am good with the regular OS.
On the other hand it sometimes seems to be a bit slow.
So I thought I evaluate the options running it on a different OS.
I am a bit scared flashing the device (installing a completely new ROM), as I tried to do that with a cell phone and trashed the device.
I thought it might be possible to start the device from SD without even loading the regular BN OS.
I don't mind leaving an SD card in there for like forever and always boot from there.
Is such thing possible?
Not to flash the device but still use a custom ROM?
If so, does anyone have a link to a tutorial?
Thanks a lot!
Matt

Yes, it is done all the time. It depends on which CM version you want. Look through the dev forum. If you want the latest, try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48808658
Sent from my SCH-i705 using XDA Premium HD app

Thanks for the quick reply.
Do I lose any kind of performance, when I boot a ROM from the SD card (assuming I have a high speed card, so the SD card is not the limiting factor)?
I mean is the BN OS still running in the background?
How do I start the ROM from the SD card?
Thanks again,
Matt
EDIT: I think I got it.
Gotta figure out how to read the device though.
Will do that on the weekend using this:

Thanks

High-speed cards don't necessarily yield best performance for running ROM -- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49007593&postcount=84 for pointers/tips on how to create SD-based ROM cards for HD+.

[IDEA] RoM Partition

I don't know if that's the correct way of saying it or this is even a viable idea. But instead of having to go from nandroid to nandroid to switch between RoMs is there a way to just choose between the 2 or even 3 when you start your phone up? i don't know if this is viable at all, if so why not? Or if this has been previously discussed i would appreciate a link.

There was a guy on the desire forums that tried this,
He tried to actually have the roms stored on the SD card and boot from that every time... I suppose its feasable, but difficult to implement...
You could have a partition for every ROM
JD
What is the comparable speed of the internal ROM space than a usual even class 6 SD card? I'd be a bit warey of having the full ROM AND an ext full of apps streaming off it.
One way around it would for it to copy the ROM your booting onto the internal each time, however then you'd have an amazingly long boot and shutdown [where it has to replace the SD's version], and generally might as well just nandroid it.

this is exactly what us HD2 owners are doing... currently I have 3 builds on my SD, and just change the path to boot from when I want to change. Good things are happening... Currently I am using a class 10 card and its benchmark and linpack all score just under a Froyo N1

So you think maybe this would be viable on an N1 some point in the future?

Where is our v1.4?

Hey guys with the release of the Nook Tablet and the price reduction of our brethren color, where is our 1.4 rom update? I assume the NT is already running it as well as any new NC. Should we be concerned the 1.4 update may lock up our bootloaders like the NT is?
Its not out for the NC yet. Reports said December.
Your signature indicated you're running CM7.1, why care about the 1.4, which is probably Gingerbread 2.3.5?
I am but I've considered dual-booting stock firmware alongside, especially with the newly added features of 1.4 . Aside from that I just like to play with roms, I didnt have 1.3 on my device for more than 72hours before I stuck cm7.1 on it.
Don't jump on v1.4 too fast...
It could have locked down the device to where dual boot & CM7 are not usable...

If you still have the stock ROM installed I would assume you could still do a factory reset and then avoid any OTA updates.

That isn't likely. The board attempts to boot the first partition of sd or emmc (if its vfat). It loads MLO then u-boot.bin. They "could" lock down either with an update, but you could simply boot sdcard and replace the ones in /boot with non-locked versions. You don't have much to worry about with this device.

What if they updated the bootloader to stop it from looking for the SD card first. The nook tablet doesntsearch for SD card first does it?

The Tablet does check the SD card first, however it's checking for a signed boot image there just like on the internal memory. The only signed image you could possibly run at this time is one copied from the internal memory, but the mount points in that image point right back to the partitions on the internal memory so it wouldn't look like you've done anything differently.
From what I gather, SD boot is in important part of B&N's service setup for these devices as it allows an in-store employee without tons of Android tech support training to stick in a special SD card and boot straight into reformatting tools, etc no matter how badly someone messed up their software.
Can you even flash a bootloader on these devices? My only experience with devices where you could flash something lower level than recovery is my HTC phone and it's hboot but that device is setup very differently than these tablets

Rooting a Nook HD+

I just purchased a Nook HD+ which upgraded during initial charge to 2.1 and would like to root it so I can restore apps and data from my Nook Tablet (w/CM7) using Titanium Backup. I read the CWM/ROOT/EXTRAS post, but for some reason it is still a tad confusing. I understand I need to use some of the files at the bottom, but which ones specifically do I need and can I get simplified directions. Thank you in advance.

It is as simple as I can make it. Just read sections 1, 2 and 3. Everything you need is there. It tells you which files to use.

After reading it a few more times I was able to create the necessary bootable SD card copy the necessary zip files and root my device. I was likely over complicating the process. Anyway, I was able to root the device and was able to restore data to my HD+ from my Tablet. Thank you.

did you get any obstacle during the process? i am planning do the similar thing...
thanks.
To me the hardest part was deciding which CMW file to go with...to be honest I just guessed and went with the small_stock and it did what I needed it to. If there was more detail on what each of the CMW files contained and/or their different purposes (if there are any) that would have really help this be a quicker process for me. In the end I got it accomplished so that is all that matters. Thank you leapinlar for the work you have done on this project.

Obviously you did not read the show content section for selecting the image you need. The 4GB is the best one to use if you have a big enough card. The small version is identical, but is used for smaller cards.

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster. At the risk of getting flogged for asking a noob question, I'm sticking my neck out here.
Henry, I had no obstacles modifying my Nook HD+ last week. At first I found the instructions on this forum intimidating looking, but they were really easy to follow. Easier, I think, than when I made the root SD Card for my previous Nook Tablet. Before I get to my noob question, I want to say thank you to those developers who provided the rooting instructions. You guys are great.
Now, on with the show.
As I said, I had no obstacles modifying my Nook HD+. However, after the modification I have a few minor glitches. My custom wallpaper shrinks from 3 pages to one sometimes. No big deal. The wallpaper corrects itself and returns to full size after the tablet sleeps for a while. No biggie. Another problem I have is the wallpaper and app drawer will not rotate when I hold the tablet sideways. All the apps will rotate, just not the wallpaper and app drawer. Again, no real big issue. I've got a problem with a couple of apps, but I think those issues are app related.
Now, for my big problem: No videos will play. I've tried YouTube, Netflix and embedded videos from a website. Nothing. Nothing plays. I get a black screen. When I play Netflix I get sound but no picture.
If it was just one app in particular, I would think it's the app. However, I've tried video from three sources and I get the same result.
What am I missing?
Now, according the the modifiying/rooting instructions, I've technically not rooted my tablet. I did flash the following files:
New OTA (Over the Air) update block (rev2- 03/29/13)
Full revert to Plain Stock 2.1.0 (latest 5/3/13)
Extras - includes enabling Unknown Sources - (rev3 - 5/6/2013)
I am running HD+ 2.1.0. Purchased the tablet June 11.

[Q] Stuck at Cyanoboot screen

Hello I've had a Nook HD+ working since August beautifully, I thought to get one for my sister and picked one up over the weekend.
Today I decided make it like mine, ie take off the B&N interface and try for a most vanilla like jelly Bean.
These are the instructions I followed last time....
"1. Download leapinlar's NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-4GB-rev4-(05.15.13).zip
2. Extract the zip above and burn the img to a 4GB or larger microSD card
3. After burning, copy cm-10.1-20130512-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip and gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip back to the microSD card
4. Place the microSD card back to the Nook HD+ and boot it
5. Do a backup for the stock ROM
6. After backup is done, do data wipe/factory reset
7. Flash the cm-10.1-20130512-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip and gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip"
I made a mistake this time around, I used cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip by accident instead of the EMMC version. Now when I power the unit on, with no SD card it keep rebooting at the Nook screen. With a now corrected SD card it gets stuck at the cyanoboot screen, it dims after a minute but then still just stuck there.
How do I go about fixing this? Thank you in Advance....
Ok so I rebuilt the SD card and it looks like it's kinda back to normal. I did a wipe and then wrote....
cwm-recovery-ovation-3.zip
cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc.zip
gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
Rebooted and now it gets stuck at that spinning logo, the logo never goes to the correct aspect ration. Screw it I'm done for today.
Tomorrow I'll try doing a restore to factory defaults and try the same steps again, if it should fail again, then I'll restore, wipe, and try the exact same files I used on mine. Unless someone has a better guide/method to use....
Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!
You need to get back to pure stock so that everything can be done over. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and use your already burned CWM SD to flash a plain stock ROM from item 6. Also do a factory wipe with it.
Then start over, but use the dummies guide for CM10.1.
Edit: I did not see your second post when I wrote this. But I think the advice still holds.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using XDA Premium HD app
OK go tit all settle! I used your stock image, booted up to normal, then went back, wiped, and did the usual files. The latest file cm-10.2-20131031-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc Gave me keyboard errors, so I went back to the old file I used previously on mine, cm-10.1-20130615-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-emmc, and everything seems perfect.
Thank you for your help! You are a man among men!

I'm trying to follow your method of going back to stock on emmc, but I can't get my nook into recovery. I have re-made my SD card multiple times and the times my HD+ boots off the sd card (mine is one of those thats hit or miss), it will stay stuck on the Cyanoboot screen. If I can't get into recovery somehow, I'm hosed. Any ideas? I want to avoid having to bring it in for 1 year warranty replacement.

i find it hard to believe we are both just screwed. Maybe I'll try and find a different sd card and give that a try. Ugh. This is most bogus.
Hello everybody,
I have even worse problem with cyanoboot - I've bought used NOOK HD+ after someone tried to install cyanogenmod on it, and except holding cyanoboot at screen with an SD card (that I've prepared accordingly leapinlar's page), it has next issues:
1) there is absolutely no response, when I try to turn it on without an SD card;
2) when the SD was untouched by me, it had some other cyanoboot installed on it but with this version nothing in the cyanoboot menu worked: there was a menu and errors in the console every time I've done everything. But, at least, it loaded.
And I have no SD card bigger than 1 GB.
And, question ahead - is it some easy way to figure out whether my B&N is bricked?
Regards

Good luck to you, sir.
Do you mean you are going to try another SD card by making it bootable with CWM? Or are you going to try verygreen's no-emmc build and run your tab directly off the SD? Because I have tried more than a few SD cards for the former to no effect.

Glad you got it exchanged. Nook, after the drop in prices has been extremely good value for money.
I'm in Afghanistan, so an exchange is not happening until my next R&R. I'll probably be able to save enough for a Note 10.1 or Nexus 10 atleast by then.

Perm root for nook hd+ 2.2

Yes I was wondering if theres a way to perm root the nook hd plus it has the 2.2 software on it. I see theres bootable sd cards for a dual mode boot. I would like to be able to have perm root if possible where I could still use my sd card which is 32gb

This is possible Verygreen created a way to do this and Leapinar has added it to his system which may be more to your liking. I am at work right now and can't get the links for you.

I did it on the HD+ with software version 2.2. I am currently running verygreen CM 10.2.1 with Android 4.3.1. It is very stable and responsive. I had a the screen flash a few times at first but as soon as I got the gapps installed and updated that went away. I am a noon at doing this but I eventually figured it out within a day. If you want the nook app you have to Google it and download it from the web because it is not available on the Google play store. I hope this helps some.

It depends on what you mean by root. People use that term loosely to mean two different things. Rooting really just means adding root access to an existing ROM. If that is what you mean, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and follow that for adding root access to stock. Some people mistakenly call replacing stock with a different rooted ROM as 'rooting'. It is not, it is replacing your stock ROM with one that happens to be rooted. If that is what you meant, go to e.mote's dummies guide for installing CM10.1/CM10.2 (also linked in my signature) to replace stock on internal memory. Either will be 'permanent'.
