Bare wit me I'm tired and going to bed in a few min. I started playing with chrome extensions and turns out Plex works pretty great.
Heres what you do in a nutshell. if you use plex already skip this.
1. download install plex media server and set it up using folders with your videos to add to the que.
2. the above might just work with Myplex.com but I have both. So get a my plex account and link your plex server/files to it.
3. install the plex chrome extension.
4. go to myplex account and your library. que up a video and start playing, cast it to chrome then hit full screen on the plex player. your audio and video will automatically size and cast to the tv. how awesome is that?
Would it be the same concept with a tablet? I never used myplex...

no it won't work over tablet as of now. really the op is only making people aware that it is possible to stream all your local content regardless of codec through the browser. then it's just casting that tab, it works alright but is nowhere near flawless and the limit is 720p.
i am really really hoping that it gets integrated to the app itself, but it doesn't seem to be a top priority for the devs. i do think they will get around to it eventually though.
I just read a report this morning that the Plex devs are optimistic that they're app will provide support soon.

I read the same thing and it appears they are only saying that due to a tweet from last week that they had ordered some. In the plex forums the only thing that a developer has said is that they won't start working on it until they have their devices. i do expect them to add the functionality, but i doubt it will be in the next few weeks. they generally aren't the quickest at adding new features.

Yeah, good to know. I'm still hoping that the developer of MX player decides to update the app. That would solve all local streaming issues. Just connect to LAN on ES File Explorer and then stream the video using MX Player.
I emailed the dev from mxplayer and they said a new app would need to be made. Apparently the app can't support both the chrome and android sdk. I'm not sure how accurate that is maybe they have to look into it a bit more. I think there is some confusion since the sdk for the chromecast is chrome sdk not android.

As was said, tablet apps are different, this is glorified mirroring. it's not perfect. it's more or less a proof of concept. I'm sure if you messed with buffer rate it would probably speed things up a lot. I was up all night and just kind of knocked off my seat when I saw audio reencode on the fly. What's kind of crazy is the plex plugin seems to figure out what you want and tries to do it for you. I don't see how the plugin is resizing when you hit full screen mode It's like it's interfacing with chromecast. Like for example if you try to play a avi by dragging it into chrome you get no audio but if you kick it into plex the audio gets turned off on the pc and put to the tv. I think plex guys should have this golden in a short time. as a fairly long time plex user. almost 2 years on roku. they rarely announce their Dev stuff they just one day release it.

You need to install plex server and after you add avi files to plex library you'll be able to play from chrome tab. You can cast the same tab as well.

Oh? Dang, must be doing something wrong because Plex asks me to send file to my Plex library. The only way is that personalized email link or dragging from a website with the Plex icon. I can't figure out how to drag a local avi from Explorer in WIN7.

Once server is installed you need to access its web interface for managing library. Do some search on their forums/documentation. You will get it.

the web interface has always been http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html#!/dashboard pms(plex media server) should be running first
save this page as a bookmark in chrome does the same thing
just start casting then hit fullscreen video
when video is fullscreen alt+tab is handy to set tab focus to desktop if you want to continue using your PC for something else(windows key)
Thank you very much, fellahs. I finally figured it out, namely, I had installed the Flex Media Center instead of the Plex Media SERVER! :silly: It's all good now and all the .avi's I have play in Chrome. Thanks again, now awaiting my Chromecast but at least I'm all set-up!

This app is now available in Apple Store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rplay/id692511073?ls=1&mt=8
I submitted an app to Apple store, called rPlay, which does Chromecast emulation. The app is being reviewed right now. Here is the description:
"rPlay tunrs your iPhone/iPad/iPod into a chromecast device, so you can stream music and video from another device using chromecast enabled apps, such as YouTube and Google Music, etc. You can in turn stream from your iOS device to your Apple TV, this way, you can stream chromecast media to your Apple TV."
I hope Apple can approve this FREE app.
It supports YouTube/GoogleMusic/Custom Apps, chrome tab browsing is not there yet due to the lack of features in Safari browser.
This is a YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4urxecUbAk
Some screenshots are attached:
We will also release a Windows and Android version soon. On non-iOS platforms, rPlay is much more than ChromeCast, it also has AirPlay/AirPlay Mirroring, and upcomping Miracast emulation, etc.
Some screenshots for the Windows version, will be freely available, most likely next week or two.
Windows version supports AirPlay Mirroring, ChromeCast (YouTube/Google Music/Browser Tab mirroring/Custom Apps), etc.
Can't wait. Sounds awesome!!

Will this support Netflix?
Do you mean netfix chromecasting?
This is not easy, unless netflix app is available on that platform, and assuming it takes the same parameters as the netflix version on the real chromecast device. We will definitely give it a try.

A quick update: back and forth a few times, the app was rejected, and I had to make some modifications, now re-submitted, and waiting for review again.

Hey, thanks to huisinro for this great job. I received notification on sundy night about the iOS app has been approved. Gave it a try running YouTube app on my android device and using my iPad 1 as Chromecast receiver. Works out of the box. I've wrote a blog entry Use your iPad as a Chromecast receiver - and now I'm eager to get in touch with a Windows and Android port of rPlay.

Plex is a great little app but this feature will be rolled out FIRST to premium subscibers.
RealPlayer cloud opens the door to streaming video from their online storage (2GB free - more than that = paid) and is limited to 15 minutes to discourage piracy.
aVia indexes photos on Picasa, Dropbox and Facebook, allowing users to show any of their photos on any of these services on their TV but alas you need to be a paid subscriber for this service also.
Now play podcasts via BeyondPod and enjoy the Washington Post’s PostTV, online music service Songza, RedbullTV, Revision3, VEVO and Viki on your little dongle of delight.

Now that's what I am talking about.
LOL aVia's site is getting bombarded. Their database can't keep up (search is giving me database connection error). That gives us a little bit of insight as to how many Chromecast users and followers there are out there!
This is pretty important.. Is there a possibility that someone can release an "emergency" pwncast to get these new streaming abilities? Or does it just have to do with the Whitelist?

Only the whitelist.
It's a good point to make that one of the downsides of using a custom ROM/firmware is that updates and such will encounter some delay. After all, people like the folks on Team Eureka are donating their own free time. It's not their job, nor do they work at/for Google (at least not as far as I know), so with the power of root comes a requirement of patience.

If you're rooted, you'll have to wait for the custom whitelist to get updated.
If you're stock, just make sure all your apps are up-to-date.
Chromecast support in Plex is currently limited to PlexPass members.
Chromecast support in aVia is part of the paid extras (at least that's what the article in the original post says, and from what I can tell so far - free has no Cast icon or option)
EDIT: Hmm... just bought aVia and still can't find the Cast option... might be because I don't have a Chromecast visible at the moment...
2 of the apps i installed had an update. vevo and the PostTv. I switched to another account on the play store and it showed up. So it appears the apps are being updated now.

why dont you email them and ask, then come and post it here so everyone knows.
I wouldn't expect them to make it public until they have all the bugs worked out.
Most notably the issues with the transcoder.
And even then they might wait until Music and Picture support is implemented.

The Plex employees in their forums won't speculate, but they definitely aren't implying that it's soon. The more experienced long-term Plex users seem to be suggesting to expect around 6 months based on past experience. But for all we know it could be tomorrow, and they're just doing a really good job of keeping it quiet.

Truth is the Plex Pass fee is really only required for the Plex Player apps...
The Server is free! And truth is the Server is the most important part of that system because it works with any DLNA/UPnP player.
Right now aVia is the only player other than Plex that can play to CCast.
But it won't be the only one for long....
So it makes a ton of sense to be running a Plex Server (or any transcoding DLNA server for that matter) despite the fact you won't get all the features of it until a better player app that supports DLNA and CCast fully (With transcoding) comes along.
I'm using the Plex for android and stream media to my CC without any problem for about a week or so. It worked after they made an update recently. you just need to buy the app which is about 5 bucks.

No just buying the app isn't enough...
CCast support requires PlexPass account. You can run the app and stream to your device but the CCast streaming shouldn't not work unless you have a PlexPass subscription.
I will note someone had a link to a developer version of the Plex App that bypassed this requirement but I wouldn't trust it...
I have had Plex for some time now and they are right, it is a anyone's guess when the support opens for casting. The developer version works just fine in my opinion as well. Avia does most of what I want anyway so if you want to put your money in the right place now, get the avia app honestly.

Quite Understandable....I'm not even sure you can buy just one month as I thought the Sub Options were a Year and Lifetime.
I understand why CCast support is PlexPass only at this point. If you're a regular visitor to the Plex Forums you would see a myriad of issues being reported regarding the transcoding and specifically surround Audio. This is on top of the usual problems we talk about here such as loss of control, Network, Router and Connection issues.
Right now the PlexPass users are sort of acting as the Beta Testers for this since they are the most familiar with Plex and it's workings.
To open it up to the Public right now would probably overwhelm the support forum rehashing the Bugs they already know about and add the reports of things that are not broken just because the user didn't know there is a setting in Plex set wrong they didn't know exists.
I would guess that when the Transcoder is running perfectly you might see CCast support go Public.
But they may also wait until they finish their Music and Picture support which at this point does not exist at all.
aVia does work provided your library doesn't need transcoding but if you do then it might be worth paying for the PlexPass at least until they release it publicly.
Plex right now is the only system that works exactly as Google intended it to when they developed the CCast.
Mobile App tells the CCast to load a player app and play a stream direct from a server without needing the device that launched it once it starts.
Plex is the only system that transcodes local files for playback as RealPlayer requires you to upload to their cloud to get a transcoded stream back.
Perhaps the announcement about the 10 Apps with CCast support being added was a bit of stretching the truth for Christmas Shopping Marketing Purposes...
Cause lets be honest none of the options for Local Content are perfected or issue free. aVia has had at least 10 Updates since the announcement maybe even more....
Most of the work on the Plex side has been done to the server side because I haven't seen any updates to the Android apps itself, certainly not as many as the aVia Player has....
All the Local playback App options do the job better than CCast did before they were released...
But thats about all you can really say about them. They are all still learning how to crawl at this point and none are what I would call a perfected and Mature option that does everything we expect they should yet.
It's going to take time...What CCast does it much more complicated than what Miracast, Roku and Airplay do.

About a month initially with the Chromecast "preview" SDK and then a week to update it after the final SDK was released. It took longer because we didn't use the Cast SDK's companion library. We didn't like the default look and feel of Google's remote control buttons all squished up in one corner of the screen. Hope it helps.
...and with the latest update of vGet and its unusually high cost, this browser looks like a sweet deal. I might give it a better test this time around
