As the subject says, I keep losing all my contacts on Kitkat 4.4.4 (Unofficial Beanstalk ROM). This happens after the phone is left idle for extended periods (ex. overnight).
I was running build 23/06/2014, P880-devs (grouper blobs) when I first noticed the issue.
Then I updated to build 14/07/2014 (also P880-devs) along with iodak v10 CM kernel, and still, the issue exists.
I still lose my contacts after a while of inactivity, and have to re-import my contacts.vcf (saved on the root folder /data/media/0)
I cannot seem to find a way to intentionally duplicate the issue. For example, I reboot the phone but the contacts will remain there. It only does it when left idle for several hours or more.
I made sure I did a factory reset & wiped cache from CWM recovery before flashing both ROMs. The only thing I did not do is wiping dalvik cache. Could this be the reason why?
I tried to search to see if anyone else had this problem but
My baseband is v20c (UAE) if that matters.
Edit: to clarify further, the contacts were always imported to phone memory only (have not chosen to sync with google).
Also using pa_gapps-modular-mini-4.4.4-20140708-signed.zip

This never happened to me, although I'm running the CM-based version (latest version).
One thing might be a conflict with your Google account contacts. May be the phones syncs an empty Google address book down to your phone?

Thanks for your reply Chris. This sounds plausible as I remember the last time the "all contacts" appeared empty, the "people app" was showing about 60 out of the 83 contacts that i had originally imported.
I'm a bit dissatisfied with the KK dialer and the "people app". I find them a bit limited. For instance, the inability to edit numbers directly from the dialer, the inability to selectively remove certain contacts from the speed dial list, etc.
The settings are no different. The only semi-relevant setting I can find is through the people app -> accounts -> auto-sync app data (checked by default, and lists my google, whatsapp and facebook accounts).
May I ask why you chose the CM-based version over p880-dev? is there an up-to-date pros and cons list on both?
Cheers
Issue seems to be solved by itself
Strangely, the issue hasn't reoccured since my original post. But, I can't complain
Related
Recently I have not been able to connect to 3G(HSDPA) and I tried rebooting a few times without luck. (Stock N1 2.1 -> 2.2 Froyo RC)
So, I did a factory reset. Before you go "moron thats why you are missing all your apps!", I watched in Google IO a person saying "if you have ever upgraded your android phone, you know there is no need to re-download all your apps, because the data is all in our server"
And, in the (supposedly not public) Android Market Website accessed from a PC, you can login and see all the android devices you have and all the apps you have installed in each.
So after reading the warning messages, I went ahead and reset it. After logging back onto my google account, guess what? All my apps are gone.
At first, I was okay with it, I have way too many useless stuffs anyway. Then I went to Market, wondering if I can view my "downloads" list, to my surprise my download list is empty except showing one app i purchased and 3 "default" apps that already came installed in Froyo.
I went back to Settings>Privacy>
and I see these two options:
Backup my settings
Automatic Restore (Restore applications' data from backup when they are installed)
I mean, am I misunderstanding something or missing some info here? I thought from my understanding, if say I buy a brand new Nexus One, and log onto my account, the least I should be able to do is log onto market and see what have i previously downloaded on my OLD DEVICE, right?
I have re-downloaded all the apps I need, I just wanna know if this feature (as the way I understand it) exists.
Thanks guys.
that auto download of apps thing from Google IO is supposed to be a Gingerbread feature for android 3.0
lol i surely missed the "Gingerbread" note and i feel like a complete idiot now
nevertheless, thank you so much for the reply, at least we know it will come !
Actually you're both wrong. The saved downloads list has been a feature since 1.6, it just never works correctly. Usually saving only purchased apps and a few free ones. The auto-restore is a Froyo feature and worked almost perfectly for me when I upgraded [it installed all the ones it remembered but because of the aforementioned bugginess of the save list, I had to restore about 20% manually with Titanium Backup]. The other new feature that was announced at I/O was data restore. This too is a Froyo feature, but like apps to SD, it is an API which must be implemented by the individual app developers. The data restore feature is fully functional in the OS right now, it just has nothing to restore because it needs the apps to tell it what to save. Within a couple weeks of the official Froyo rollout I think you can expect to see most active developers implement the 2.2 APIs in their apps.
So a friend of mine updated his T-Mobile UK Samsung Galaxy S to the official 2.2.1 JPY firmware using Odin a few weeks ago. This went well, and is the same firmware that I've had on my unbranded SGS since December.
However, he has an interesting problem. Some of his apps (Handcent, Dolphin HD, plus a few others) seem to forget all of their settings every time the app is exited. For example, every time he goes back into Dolphin it enters the setup wizard as it it's being ran for the first time. This doesn't happen on every app, and it doesn't happen every time.
I noticed there are a couple of other threads on here with people reporting similar issues on custom ROMs (with no solution), but this is a stock ROM from samsungfirmware.com and certainly doesn't happen on my SGS, so it's not the ROM to blame.
Anyone know of a fix?
This question posted in the last few days .

As I said in my post "I noticed there are a couple of other threads on here with people reporting similar issues ... (with no solution)". I wasn't being lazy and just starting another thread without doing some research first. I've read the other threads and they do not contain a solution that will work for him.
I'm assuming you're referring specifically to this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992335 In my friend's case, rooting is not an option, so this solution won't work for him.
However, based on that it looks like a factory reset may fix it. If I don't come back people reading this can assume it worked.
Hello
I experimented the same issue.
Looking at some log traces event it reported some permissions errors on intestinal filesystem like database location access write errors. This can explain setting persistence trouble.
After various workaround, bypass or others kind of fallback I did a full reinstallation of filesystem including a wipe data of the system. Take care to backup application and sensible data SMS, photo...
Since all is working fine and no more problems with settings
I don't know if it's helping you.
This is just my personal experience on this same problem.
Perhaps more simple solution is possible
Regards
Gilles
Thanks. So far so good after a Factory Reset. If it were my phone I'd be looking at Logcat, etc, too, but it's a bit hard to do remotely.
It's odd how some apps saved their settings fine, but some don't.
A factory reset did fix it... for a while. But then other apps started suffering from the problem.
So I've been researching this a bit more today. Here's what I've discovered:
The problem is unique to Samsung Galaxy S phones, and appears to be only ones running 2.2.1 (but maybe 2.2. too?).
Samsung have renamed /data/data to /dbdata/databases, and shared preferences for applications are persisting in this folder even if the application is uninstalled. If you install the app again, the app becomes a different user from the one that owns the shared preferences.
For example - If you install some random application and you look at its process running with the ps command, it will show as "app_XX", where XX is some number. For our example here let's say it shows as "app_55". When it then saves its settings in /dbdata/databases the folder the settings are saved in will have owner (shown by ls -l) as "app_55" too. That's fine, and normal.
The seed of the problem is sewn when you uninstall the app. Those shared preferences are not removed. Even using the "Clear data" option before uninstalling doesn't seem to help. If you then install the app again and look at the output of ps you'll see the new app is "app_56". The shared preferences are still there from last time with owner "app_55", hence the permissions error when it tries to save its settings, as user app_56 cannot modify user app_55's files.
A factory reset obviously cures it as this, at least temporarily, as it wipes the data in /dbdata/databases.
If you're rooted, you can go into /dbdata/databases and delete the relevent folder for the application that's having the problem. It will be recreated with the correct owner next time the app saves its settings.
I didn't try chown to change the owner to the correct one, but maybe that's a way to keep the old settings and correct the problem.
Bingo. No wonder my titanium backup is not remembering the preference settings.
Hey All,
It is almost 10 months I am using this LG-P970 phone, but until now I've seen nothing but a headache, does anyone else agree?
My main problem (besides the bad performance) is the incident of losing my contacts.
It has happened to me 4 times until now under Froyo, Gingerbread and even Zeus 7 (the most recent incident 2 days ago).
Simply it happens when I open the contacts list, I see that all my contacts are erased in addition to the call log, and I am very aware it is not a matter of contacts display setting as some people might suggest.
The first time this happened to me my contacts were not even synced with Google because I didn't know the contact type should be "Google Contact" in order for it to be synced, and every time I want to create a new contact I have to change its contact type before saving it (I know how to convert existing contacts but please tell me if there is another method to automate the process for new contacts).
I don't know what you think of this phone, but I am pretty sure that my new mobile phone won't be related to the LG family.
Cheers all!

You seem to have a good control of your P970, can you expert explain to us how data loss can be a user problem?
Well the best solution is to NOT sync your contacts with Google.
It can either delete new contacts when you restore, or it restores deleted contacts, personally it's crap lol.
Just save them all on your SIM!!! If ever you lose Sim contacts like that. then it's your SIM which is damaged.
I NEVER experienced such problem.
And just to say, Optimus Black is not a crappy phone at all! Mind the way you define it.... Not because you are having contacts problems that it's a crappy phone... It may be an app causing this problem, your SIM card which is damaged, or whatever else.
Yes it's a user problem, we don't know what are your settings after a full wipe and whatever you do wrong or what applications you install that wipes the contact list.
From the first android phone that i had years ago, g1, copied the sim numbers to phone and after adding the google account, google synced it automaticaly and saved all my contacts to google account.
Since then i've added/deleted several contacts, changed several phones (at least 10 with android), and every time i added in the google account to it the contacts where synced.
I think i flashed over 100 different roms, never bricked a phone, even though i used several methods to root and flash recovery, hardest method was on g1 and i think it was the most inteligent one, if any of you had one
Now i'm on zeus 7, so it must be your fault

no need of google syncing or SIM backup.
contacts -> import/export ->export to sd card.
now u have a [email protected] card. just back it up on your computer or online storage and restore as many times u want. no tension.
in case of newer saves, just delete the old vcf and redo the process or just save normally. (the vcf's will be named progressively, 000,001,002...)
hope i helped.
regards,
achyut.
If your coming from somewhere else where you don't have contacts backuped on sd and only on sim.

No need for sarcasm, I just don't find that annoying chosing google when creating a contact, a small fee for the great service i get in return
Thank you all for your participation .
Maybe "crappy" is not the right word to describe a P970 here as I have seen it has many fans (I did not mean to be offensive), and maybe you have a point if you never had any bad experiences with your devices, but what happened with me was annoying!
I would like to assume that I did something wrong with the phone the first three times I lost my contacts (it also happened when it was brand new - no flashes done or ROMs installed), but do you think the following is too wrong?
1. installed a clean Zeus 7 after multiple wipes/restore factory settings and cache wipes (using cwm in a patched V20B software version)
2. the ONLY apps that I installed were :whatsapp, viber, facebook, google translate, french language pack for the keyboard, and google maps
3. randomly I unlocked the phone once to see that my contacts were lost
As simple as that.
My OB sometimes clean my sms box... but i think it's related to OC and UV... when i set for example: [email protected] and [email protected], after some time my smss are gone, and it's almost as plain as the nose on your face (in my case).
I use titanium backup to save them and restore after loosing them, but after seting my cpu to stable config, sms are where they should be.
i've had a small problem with the p970 but that was a google problem.
i had my contacts stored on my google account, but wenever i made a new contact it wasn't stored in google.. so when i flashed a new rom the latest additions to my contacts were gone.
but as most of the people allready said, do not sync your contacts but export them to your sd card. works flawless..
but i never experienced the problems you have, performance is realy good with the great custom roms we have here at xda.
i have my p970 for 6 months or so and i'm very happy with it.
You need to sync your contacts to.
Not just save the on your phone.

SIM cards have relatively limited storage capabilities. They can store a contact and a number in each memory slot (I don't know if there is another piece of information that can be stored) but definitely it can't store two numbers for the same contact name that's why you see "X (home)" and "X(mobile)" for example as two separate entities.
I have the same problems with op - it has erased my contacts randomly 3-4 times in my 16 months of using it. Unrooted - official roms (2.2 and 2.3, various firmwares).
And a couple times sd card was 'destroyed' - losing everything stored there. Of course after reformatting sd card was fine....
I understand it is not a common issue - else more noise would be made around this issue, but something must be wrong with some batches.
A real disappointiment this phone.

It is simply not possible. The form of storing contacts data on SIM is rather ancient but it is industrial standard.
All I can say is the hardware is not at fault for the problems OP has listed in his post, it's a software thing.
Let's say it is possible to switch to a non-Google ROM. say Windows Phone 8 which doesn't sync with Google for its contact, the contacts will likely stay intact.
edit - Of course before anyone start jumping over Windows Phone 8 on our phones, no it's not happening and I'm using an easier example of switching OS to demonstrate that the hardware has nothing to do with software issues.
Having a problem in which app or task reappears in the foreground after pressing the Home button. Also, if I tap the recent apps button, the list of apps appears and then just as quickly brings the most recent app into the foreground automatically again. It happens so quickly that the "x" for closing the apps in the list doesn't even have a chance to appear or let me swipe them away.
Something else that seems to happen along with this problem is that parts of any given app start freezing (i.e. unresponsive links, menu options, etc) while other parts of the app can be tapped/pressed. For example, if I'm in the android settings menu, I may not be able to select one option in a list but I can select the option right above it. This appears to be totally random. If I back out of that menu and/or clear the app from the app list, I can go back and select that same menu option just fine.
This seems to only have started after I added a second user on the phone. I guess it could be that the phone doesn't have enough memory to handle both users, but why would ANDROID then build that feature into it's phone OS?
Fixes I've tried so far (based on extensive research on forums and web search):
Restarting the phone - works temporarily but the issue(s) returns within minutes.
Clearing the phone's cache - no difference
Clearing app cache for each app - no difference
Uninstalling unneeded apps - no difference
Disabling bloatware - no difference
Clearing Google now and search - temporary fix, problem returned soon
Turning off Google now and search - temporary fix, problem returned soon
Factory reset, reinstalled from backup - temporary fix, problem eventually returned
Factory reset, setup both users from scratch - temporary fix, problem eventually returned.
I have a Moto X xt1097, Android 5.1 stock, non-rooted
Any help or responses appreciated!

Well, I considered that as PART of the issue, sure. But isn't Android 5.1 supposed to support multiple users? If so, what about having a second user is causing the issue?
More info. I set up the second user for my business, using a separate Gmail account; minimal apps under that user (mostly Google's business products). I kept getting the two accounts mixed up when both were logged in under the same user.

It does "support" it. But you must remember that everything is shared, memory, storage, processor, and network, so the phone is a limit. The better the phone, the better it works.
Even when you are not using the other account it is using all of those things in the background, it checks for emails, google play updates, and if you installed apps those apps run in the background even while you are on the other user.
It is an Android feature yes, but for example our phone only has 2GB of memory which most likely ran out from so much usage.
Personally I have 2 phones, one for business and my personal phone.
I don't know if this is true, but maybe android 6.0 would get better performance thanks to Doze. Maybe the other user account gets put into Doze mode to save resources. Just a thought, but I am only guessing.

OK, I was afraid of that. It makes sense though.
I also noticed that the problem only occurs in the second user profile but not my original user profile; I'm guessing that this is because the Android OS gives the original user priority access to resources at any given moment. Or maybe the first user profile is more resource intensive. Just a guess really.
Well, I don't have money for a second phone right now. I'll have to figure out another way to keep those accounts more easily separated.
Thank you again for your help AGISCI!
Rather than running two user accounts you can run 2 Google accounts as a single user. Hence, all your Google business apps work is saved under your business Gmail account. I've been using it this way for years with little effect on phone resources.

Thanks kboya. That's actually how I started out, but it started getting tricky keeping accounts straight (i.e. chrome would keep defaulting to my personal account instead of my business account when I was signing up for different services, etc.). So, I thought the 2nd user idea would solve it nicely; still would if I could get hardware to support it.
Fair play. IMO multiple users was meant for tablets (less sensor and signal stress) and those with kids who only run games. It'll do what you want, but only at a pinch, a 6P might manage it better.
Hello,
Have any of you installed and tested the CM 13 snapshot?
Found any problems? Battery ? things not working?
As the title may suggest I have tried various CM Rom on my Droid 4.
I used for some time a 12 Nightly, but having various problems, including on google play services
Also a big problems seemed to come when restoring apps and or databases with titanium backup.
So, I switched to a CM 11 snapshot and only installed Pico opengapps to avoid problems.
Anyway, my CM11 worked fast and flawless in the beginning, but then I started having problems with Messaging apps / contacts and phone itself.
Symptoms:
- Messaging apps often crashes
- Contacts apps does not crash but often contacts are reloaded (and this is very slow), this impacts Messaging i am guessing, Contacts itself, and Caller
- Caller often need 1 second to light up the display (when a call is incoming), and often does not show Caller's name (as i guess contacts is reloading
So basically, I have problems making calls and sending texts (all the basics)....all other apps work very well, even fast enough and never crash.
Any ideas? Think I should restart again, wiping, installing a new ROM (CM13 eventually?)
Could my problems come from conflicting apps (I uninstalled skype but kept whatsapp..) ?? I also use Nova launcher.
I wiped dalvik/cache and seemed to help for a couple of days, but now I am back upset...
I do not know how to log all this (the reasons of crashes or reloads), so I don't know what makes contacts reload, messaging crash and so on (sometime they work well..)
Thanks anyone for advices on this!
Anybody tried CM 13?
Anybody had problems with contacts / messaging / caller ids ??
