I generally use Google Maps 6.14.4 as my preferred version of GM. I've frozen AT&T Navigator. I'm thinking I could somehow set it up so that when I select AT&T Navigator I instead get GM 6.14.4, and install the latest version of GM as itself.
Any other methods of converting GM 6.14.4 so that it is a stand-alone app, not updateable via Google Play, would be welcome.

I've done that in the past, but it appears to have mixed results, in that it will be "unlinked" temporarily but will be re-"linked" the next time I open the Play Store. It's not what I'm really looking for, though--I want to make this version of GM apk a separate, "on its own" app in some way. Making the system think that this apk is actually AT&T navigate came to mind as appropriate.

Whats the difference if there is any with the pre-installed facebook app and the app on the Market?
As the facebook app on the Market says its not been installed, do we have the latest version?
From what I can tell, pre-installed apps don't know about updates. Like Google Maps for example. It's pre-installed on the N1, but I had to manually download the latest version. After installing from the Market, it now knows when there are updates. Just open your app and hit the menu button and see what version you are running. If it's older than the one in the Market, just grab the one from the Market and overwrite your pre-installed one.
thats the thing, the preinstalled version of facebook has no version number, or I just can't find it.
press menu and go into settings, there is no info about version no.
when you install an app from the Market when it came preinstalled on the phone, does it overwrite it (thus not doubling the space it takes on the phone)?
I've been wanting to update a few apps like Facebook and Voice but I'm running out of space and neither are that important to me yet.

it updates/overwrites, it doesn't duplicate the app. The update for Voice makes a big difference over the old one, so do it

Is it possible to get an APK for Bing Maps to have on my Captivate? The maps look a lot better then Google from what I've seen on the Fascinate and the Focus. I'd like to have both as an option.
I downloaded it from the market so that my car dock app would work...still like google maps better though.

just download bing from the market
Verizon Only
I have AT&T and Bing isn't available through their proxy. I was hoping to not have to hack the market app to emulate Verizon but that might be what's needed.

I can post it up for you later when I get home then. Kinda dumb that AT&T won't let you access Bing. Should send a little note to MS to inform them of that.
I got it
This is odd; but searching for bing pulled nothing in the market.
Browsing forever through the top free apps had it. I went so far down that it stopped refreshing the list; but it was there and is now installed.
Thanks
As you guys may know, Google has integrated all their communication systems into the new Google Hangouts and it is started to rolling out.
Just wanted to let all root users know that you don't need to wait to get it as for some your Google Talk isn't being updated to Hangouts currently. Like if you have Talk currently and you go to the playstore and search hangouts it will say you already have it installed and you are updated to Hangouts even though you only have talk.
If you use something like Titanium Backup to uninstall Talk from your device, you can then go on to the playstore and be able to download and install the new Hangouts app.
I don't know if this has already been mentioned as I haven't seen a thread but just wanted to let people on to this little tip if you want to get it right away!
EDIT: I'm thinking now I might have probably posted this in the Themes and Apps forum, but I wasn't exactly sure if this should have been posted there as this is just a general tip. If any Mod wants to move this please do!

Anyone get the 'couldn't sign in because couldn't reach google, try again' or whatever? I get it every time :-\

You don't need to uninstall Google talk... You can use the Web Google play to install hangouts and it will automatically replaces the old talk or obtain the apk file from the web and install it over the Google talk.

I agree. I really miss the who is online and who is offline thing. You can VAGUELY tell by the contacts picture being grayed out, but that sucks compared to a red dot. Hit the menu button in the hangout app and hit send feedback. Request for this feature to be put back in.
Had problem today

1.Use some app to take backup of Google Play Services (ES File Explorer can do it for you) and save the apk locally. This is recommended because after the next step you may not be able to connect and re-download the update over Mobile Data. It would work on WiFi however.
2.Go to Manage Apps > Google Play Services
3.Do "Uninstall" / "Uninstall Updates" for Google Play Services
4.Google Hangout will automatically ask you to Install or Update Google Play Services.
5. If you "Uninstalled Updates", then the app would update over Mobile Data when you click on update in Google Play. After this go to Step #8
6.If you "Uninstalled" the app completely, you wouldn't find it in Google Play. So install it from the backup created in Step #1.
7.Now go to Google Play and install any updates for Google Play Services.
8.Now open Google Hangout. It may still show you a connection issue for a couple for times.
9.Don't lose your heart. It should work after you try for a maximum of 1-2 times.

I haven't been a huge fan of hangouts either yet. I use textra. I have heard that there might be some nice things in the works for it though. I'm keeping tabs on it.

Usually I can Remove Updates from the app settings but I think because it shipped out with the new google maps it won't allow me to.
Is there anyway I can use the old google maps (aka the logical and better version)?

Is there a way to simply disply Google Maps on the Watch? I have Google Maps (obviously) installed on my Samsung Note 3 and irt says it's Android Wear compatable, but yet I do NOT see it in the watches apps and can't find a way to get it to pop up via a voice command.
You can voice command like Navigate to <Address> or home, work etc assuming that you have setup home address and work address in google now.

Thanks I know taht, but I was talking about just having the app itself running on the phone to display abitrary locations (like where I am now), not so much directions.
As far as I know if you are intending to have complete app on your wear watch that is not possible.
