Firmware Flashing without the panic attacks... ;) - One (M8) Android Development

~/PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!
To anyone that is S-OFF and wanting to flash firmware I have a safe and quick way that I have tested many times on my device that works flawlessly. Works on all GSM M8's. People have reported it works on Verizon as well.
I take no responsibility for anything going sideways on you but it should not if you have read up on the information in this thread and have read the instructions.
*You can flash any modded firmware zip through the instructions below the same exact way as you would the unmodified firmware way. I have tested this numerous times and all went well. Hope you guys enjoy!
NOTE: If you are on a 2.xx firmware and downgrade to a 1.5xx the phone will shut off half way through the process for about 1-3 seconds to flash the hboot. Then will turn right back on to the new downgraded hboot screen and continue where it left off. Don't worry when this happens as HTC developed this way for a reason. This has been tested many times and works flawlessly.
Here are some pictures of the process. As you can see if you look at the date on the first 2 pictures of the hboot, that is where i begin the process and where I am talking about the screen turning off and on (below) because the new hboot is getting flashed. The rest of the pictures have the new hboot that is flashed and has a newer date and is right when the screen turns back on and the flashing process continues. The pictures are in order during the process. Pictures link below...

BEFORE FLASHING the above ^ L firmware, please convert to the GPE for best compatibility, below. Follow same instructions below for flashing firmware zips to flash the GPE ruu.zip. If you want to flash back to a sense rom, make sure to flash the sense firmware.zip below before flashing a sense rom, because of the different system partition sizes in GPE and sense roms. This firmware zip directly below this sentence is all you need to flash before flashing a sense rom.

Instructions:
1. Download firmware of choice in above links
2. Rename firmware to 0P6BIMG.zip (the first character is a zero, NOT A LETTER O)
3. Put renamed firmware.zip on your external_SD
4. Boot into your bootloader and make sure your in hboot and let it update its firmware.
5. No PC, no adb, no fastboot, no terminal is needed, just a root explorer to rename and transfer the renamed firmware file to external_sd
6. After you have updated your firmware, make sure to remove the 0P6BIMG.zip from your external_sd because it will ask to update your firmware everytime your reboot to your bootloader which it is technically supposed to do but its unnecessary after you have done it once (unless you are planning on flashing firmware again).
7.Profit!
SUPERCID
Changing your cid to supercid (11111111) will let you flash firmware without ever having to worry about changing your cid (ex: CWS__001) in the android-info.txt. When the bootloader goes to flash firmware it checks for 2 values that are device specific. 1. Is your mid (model id) 2. Is your cid (carrier id) This process completely eliminates the need for your stock cid when flashing packages in "RUU" mode. So basically supercid just makes flashing firmware packages 1 step easier.
S-OFF ONLY! How to get supercid
1. Have adb and fastboot set up. There are guides all over xda and google
2. Connect phone to PC and open terminal
3. Type "adb devices" to make sure phone is connected to PC
4. Type "adb reboot bootloader"
5. Once in fastboot type "fastboot devices" to make sure fastboot sees your device
6. Type "fastboot oem rebootRUU"
7. Once in black screen that says HTC you are in ruu mode
8. Type "fastboot oem writecid 11111111" (has to be 8 one's)
9. After a successful cid overwrite type "fastboot reboot-bootloader"
10. Profit! You are now supercid!!
Additional Information...
I have also been testing different formats of the external_sd and vfat, fat, and fat32 work for updating the firmware. I formatted numerous different sdcards to ext4 and the hboot just bypasses the image as if there was no firmware.zip on the card.
Thanks to @skulldreamz, the original author of this thread for introducing me to an easy and safe method for flashing firmware without a PC

This reminds me of the HTC desire days when I didnt have a clue about fastboot commands lol!!! great find mate!!!:good:
I can't remember so far back exactly but so u need to be s off to achieve this?
This was how I used to flash different types of HBOOT on the HTC desire when it was s off

Actually no you don't need to be s-off to use this method to upgrade your firmware and or hboot. Its basically a forgotten secret on the safest way in my honest opinion to upgrade firmware because you don't have to worry about your computer shutting off or a USB cable coming out accidentally and bricking your device. Now to downgrade hboots you would need to be s-off but this is just the easiest and safest way to take a ota update without any worrying involved. If I'm incorrect on anything, anyone please feel free to jump in and correct me as I'm still somewhat new to this. Only thing I can think of is if your s-on and try to downgrade hboot, then you would just get a wrong image error but that's it. It won't flash with any unexpected consequences.

does it also work with any other firmweware.zip for the M8?
did we just rename the firmeware.zip to 0P6BIMG.zip?
that sounds very easy...to easy in my opinion

You will need S-OFF if you're trying to flash a FW package and your CID doesn't match those that the FW package is originally intended for

for GSM it should, I was renaming the zips i used to flash this way on the HTC desire to the same thing each time i flashed and it worked. The phone needs it named the same to recognise what to flash when in HBOOT

Yes it will work for any other firmware zip that has been made for our m8. Again I only have a gsm, so can only speak on that %100. It does sound easy, too easy and that's why I would recommend this procedure over any other that yeilds the same outcome. One other piece of knowledge I need to add to op is that I would use supercid as it has never failed me...

Only correction I would make to this statement is that firmware zips must be signed if you are not s-off. Customs zips cannot be flashed on s-on devices regardless of how you flash them. If the zip is signed then it can be freely flashed as mentioned above. Just keep in mind that there will be no downgrading firmware without s-off.
On a side note, it's good to see you here in the m8 forums, bro! [emoji106]

Thank you for that, very useful because my pc is dead now... One question though, the recovery file is missing inside the zip, have you put it out already? Or there wasn't one in this firmware package?

Your welcome.. No i did not remove a recovery.img or alter the firmware package at all. If you unzip the package which I provided you will see exactly what was meant to be in the 2.12.401.3 firmware 4.4.3 update.

I'm a bit surprised, that this way seems to be unknown for the most people.
I always flash my firmware that way, since i have HTC phones.
For other devices than GSM, take a look at the bootloader. Right after you are in, it is scanning for the (firmware-)files and you can see, what filename it is scanning for. So you can rename the firmware with the correct name.
Here is a picture, i made with my previous HTC One SV, that you see what i mean:

Dam it, oh well was getting one anyway lol.

If you have one lying around not being used and it's at least 4gb I would venture it would work. If the file is less than 2gb you could probably try a 2gb card.

It's nice to see this still works, this is how we flashed stuff to HTC Windows mobile phones back before Android. Idk if it will work for exfat cards though, I haven't used this since fat32 mini sd cards instead of micro.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS THREAD IS NO LONGER MAINTAINED OR UPDATED BY IT'S OP. Reason? Vivid power button broke and charger port completely non-functional. I've abandoned this forum awhile ago actually, just posting this to let newcomers ( didn't know there were still new peeps ) know it's not being updated anymore. Doesn't mean you can't use the collection of RUU's and IMG files below as they still work.

It's the STOCK ICS that came back in march, for AT&T and in july for Rogers, update not the october bugfix or whatever the heck that was.
So is the idea of these files so that you could apply a standard OTA update by reverting back to stock?
Is the process to move this file to your root folder of the SD card renaming like you mentioning and opening the Power + VOL DOWN menu?
Is there anything else unnecessary to getting back to unrooted and then is it just as easy to root and unlock after the update?

That's the problem you have to be on stock not a custom Rom to run an ruu
Sent from my Cyan HTC Raider on the Rogers Wireless Network
I see, but I can not come back stock Rom because the current version is 3.41.708.1. I run last ruu of htc (at&t) - 3.26.502.56R23, the results also are "update fail" because "main version is older". what are going on with my phone ?

Stock ROM Reset | 1.31.651.2 + 1.29.651.10 | Stock Recovery Included

If you are still S-On (or S-off but lazy or tentative) and want a simple way to return to the stock ROM and also be able flash back the stock radio and recovery then this may be for you.
XDA member migascalp gave me the idea of packaging stock ROM's with the aroma installer and include the ability to flash the stock recovery also as sort of a poor mans RUU since so many still are S-on and cannot properly run a RUU.
I have been making these for a few different versions for the GSM model M7 UL:
See here: http://www.htc1guru.com/downloads/stock-rom-downloads/
I got a request to do one for the Sprint Variant, so here it is. To be clear, I personally do not own the Sprint version, so I couldn't test this, however it is a fairly basic script and I only changed the partition info for formatting and copying the data. Thanks to XDA member @(^_^)@ for the partition layout.
If you are looking to run the stock ROM but rooted (You can add root during my installer) or modded then you will probably want one of these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2368907
Thanks to Indirect for the firmware and stock rom dumps.
Thanks to the.emilio for Radio information.
You simply flash in recovery like installing any other rom.
Here are the screen shots of the Aroma Installer. Sorry for some the bad edits, its really hard to get a good pic taken manually at bootloader or recovery:

It seems like the Radio flashing was a problem, so I have removed it from the package. It will not show up as an option during the installer.

OK, I know in TWRP when finished you have select to reboot, I didn't insert that into the script.
Odd that it is the Radio that has the issue. I will pull the package for now and update it so there is no choice for Radio install only recovery.

That is correct.
Well technically 99% as the stock radio was pulled from the package and can't be installed with the rom and recovery. The radio version shouldn't matter but you can always manually flash the correct radio before running this installer.
This demo is of AT&T Stock ROM and then OTA but the install and procedure is the same. I can't update this video for the roms in the this thread because I don't have a Sprint phone.

Well, I can say that this has worked for me. I flashed the radios, did the reset and back on all stock everything. The only issues are that Qualcomm's Enhanced Location stops working, and my phone randomly rebooted once but that may have been coincidental. I just v wished I had saved the firmware update to dropbox so I wouldn't have to download it again.
My issue was I am s-on and running a 4.3 Rom. There was no way to get the entire firmware package (PRI, firmware, radio's, etc) without being s-off. I noticed revone AND moonshine wouldn't work on the new 1.55hboot so I used this download and flashed it then manually did the OTA update to 4.3. Yes I lost root, yes my Qualcomm would not work, however, I got the FULL firmware update. I then just re-rooted and flashed OMJs deodexed and life is all good. Thank you for making this, it helped me a ton. Now I just gotta wait for an s-off method on hboot 1.55.

if you have at any point upgrade to 4.3 from 4.1 using a rooted rom, back up your 0 folder or this process will wipe it out completely.

Doesn't 0 live in the media folder? I checked the wipe script and it should leave everything in /data/media alone and I thought that would include the 0 folder.

Yes, As long as your current firmware version matches the version of the stock rom reset.
Ok great! Forgive my ignorance on this, but how do I confirm this? I see I have a Baseband of 1.00.20.0626...

That is the radio version. To check your firmware, boot to your bootloader screen (Hold power and Vol Down) and the firmware version should show for the line OS.

Alright, now that I have a clear mind and actually read your question completely...
When you tried the previous RUUs before, did they fail during flash or did Android not function correctly when you got in?
If the RUU flash failed, you more than likely still have an unlocked bootloader, which was required during the root process and the RUU does not like, so it fails.
Considering your knowledge on Android/HTC One, I'm going to point you here, download the Toolkit, extract it to somewhere... Note: I am not affiliated with the development of the Toolkit, I have used it before and IMO it is a great program, very HTC One noob friendly.
On your phone make sure USB Debugging is enabled, then, launch the Toolkit -> On the left hand side, under Basic ADB, click Bootloader. Your phone will turn off, then get into the Bootloader.
At the top, it should say Unlocked, if it does, you need to relock the bootloader, now on the right hand side of the Toolkit, check the checkbox under Agreement which will then enable the Re-lock button, click that (DO NOT CLICK S-On), Your phone will reboot to Android, Once back, click the Bootloader button again Under Basic ADB. This time instead of Unlocked, it will say Relocked. Now try running the RUU again, this time it should work.
Once the RUU flash is done, you should be all set to get going again.

in bootloader , the attached screen, we need to see if you are patched 1.44 hboot or unpatched; unpatched will be dated before June 2013

[OTA][Firmware] 4.06.651.9

Firmware:
4.06.651.9 Full Firmware - for S-ON users (fastboot flashable): You will have to re-lock your bootloader to flash the firmware if you are S-ON
4.06.651.9 Modified Firmware - for S-OFF users w/ hboot, boot.img, recovery ... removed (fastboot flashable): No need to re-lock
Instructions for flashing the firmware:
rename firmware to firmware.zip
copy firmware.zip to your sdk>platform-tools folder
boot into bootloader
plug in usb
select fastboot option (screen should say fastboot usb)
type Fastboot oem rebootRUU
when you see the black screen w/ HTC, type Fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
when it's done, type Fastboot reboot
Thanks @thoughtlesskyle
Thanks @tws101 for this
To Remove the Update Notification on the Modified Firmware if you are receiving them, you will need to update your \system\build.prop
1. Use an android file browser (with root access) and browse to \system\
2. Copy the build.prop file to your sd-card
3. Extract to your PC
4. Open with an editor like Notepad+
5. Find and replace "4.06.651.4" with "4.06.651.9"
6. On your phone rename the original file to build.prop.bak
7. Import the new file to your phone \system\
8. Correct file permissions rw-r-r
9. Reboot the phone
Now you will no longer receive update notifications. This step is only necessary if you used the modified firmware to update a stock rooted 4.06.651.4

LOL -- there really *isn't* much in there -- it's just a few parts of a full set.
If folks want 'it all' as it were, flash 4.06.651.4_modified_firmware_RUU.zip first, then modified_firmware_4.06.651.9.zip -- that should do it.
(teaser -- just for fun -- *really* edged-out version of TWRP coming soon, just a teeny selinux thing to work out first -- lol).
How can I flash this with twrp recovery. My pc broke I need to be able to update with just my phone. Thanks in advance.

Now we start. As everyone already know, the only reason we can't flash any RUU because It'll lock your sim card and your imei and we all know the method to debrand any hTC one or ever other version of hTC 10. That's why I am going to do the same method.
1/ S-off, Change CID, MID (Super CID if you want)
2/ Download RUU that match your MID
3/ Download the Sprint radio here https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3JWmvvPdlHZYUdGVUVraGZsZmc
4/ Flash radio
5/ Check Radio version. It must be [email protected]
Ok, now U can use your hTC 10 with working radio. For someone isn't using sprint simcard, Unlock the simcard using this following method:
6/ download any Sprint carrier supported rom like Viper, Leedroid, etc
7/ TWRP
8/ Choose carrier as Sprint inside Aroma, flash it
9/ Unlock sim card following this TUT http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-one-m9/general/nv-unlock-sim-t3314755

Of course at least everything works like a charm in my phone because I'm using cook rom Sprint carrier.
I still don't know what happen to your phone. In theory, you can convert to 2PS65 by this method. Change your RUU, your MID but I can't confirm there won't be any error because I haven't test in any original RUU. I only can confirm this method won't brick your phone and won't lock your imei then u can unlock your sim card manualy.
When I test with Ledroid, US Unlocked, applications still turned black so I'm back to Sprint carrier.
So sad but until now, I can't find any reason cause those troubles. Maybe because the different of hardware between 2PS64 & 2PS65. Too bad but so many people had trouble using Sprint phone outside original carrier.

Have you flash the full RUU ? after U flash full RUU of other carrier, does your radio still [email protected] ?
U can back to original Sprint RUU and try again. U also can dump your own radio.img and put it into the firmware update.

My bad, hTC 10 can flash radio through bootloader. Please reboot into bootloader, flash radio using fastboot. You don't have to mod the firmware again.

This actually saved my mobile network, long story short, I flashed an unlocked US, played with AOSP, then tried to restore my nandroid after RUU back to Sprint. Long and short left me without mobile network which freaked me out. I went 4 hours trying to fix this with flashing modems, wiping, RUU'ing, then I ended up doing exactly this (without first finding this post). So skip ahead to now, I find your post and then the post on Viper, so I did just that, I flashed the open US mode, the installed Viper, selected Sprint and low and behold its working. Thanks for this post!

Best news of the day, I've updated to US Unlock Nougat 7.0 and suddenly all the black screen gone. I don't have enough time to test but at least, the dialer, google map and some other app I knew would cause the black screen in Mashmallow now no longer black screen anymore.
Just update to latest US Unlocked with US Unlocked CID and MID then OTA to 7.0
U will lost root and TWRP. Maybe, we have to wait for a few day for a new TWRP

Cant confirm cause I'm traveling outside US so I'm using another carrier. Now the Nougat only available for US Unlocked so I need someone to check with sprint Carrier. Buts yes, U need to flash Sprint radio. I can confirm U can unlock your sim card with my old radio.img.
