I have AT&T and just wanted to make sure, the newest firmware that came out I am able to use towelroot again right?
So if I wanted to update to the new firmware with the fingerprint scanner improvements etc
I would have to unroot my phone, try to do the OTA? Is there any other way I can do this? I remember I renamed some files to try and stop updates but don't remember exactly where.
Is there an alternative way of doing it? can someone explain the steps I need to do? and what if I do a nandroid backup through safestrap, can I use this same back up with the new firmware or would I have to start over from scratch?
I can't live without root, I like using on screen buttons on my S5
What firmware version are you currently on? Both the original ANCE and the AND3 OTA can be rooted. Haven't seen anything yet about something newer than AND3.

Build number KOT49H. G900AUC2AND3
so it's safe to update with the newer firmware from AT&T?

You already have the newest firmware available from AT&T and yes you can root that. If you start getting update notifications then I would hold off on those until someone can verify if root is achievable. So far AT&T has pushed out an update newer than what you already have.
If they have pushed out a newer update what's the numbers on it. I haven't been on xda since rooting my S5 and was wondering if we can safely update and keep root.

I rooted my N900A with Root de la Vega and running MI1 but do not have the AT&T Software Update (OTA Update) app installed and don't have it backed up in tibu. Is there a way to reinstall the OTA Update? Would like to get the MJ5 since you can keep root. The Software update in device settings does not do anything when I press it. Thanks!
Just found out if I used Root de la Vega and somehow update to MJ5, I will brick my phone. Also, I tried downloading Kies 3 and it says "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies." Current firmware version: PDA:MI1 / PHONE:MI1 / CSC:MI1 (ATT)
Is it worth upgrading to MJ5? Any post on the benefits of the MJ5 update? I don't have any audio problems that I can hear.
Yes, I'm waiting as well. Thanks

You have to be on MI9 in order to get the MJ5 OTA update.
I wouldn't upgrade to MJ5 until there is an MJ5 restore oneclick/odin.

I see, so how did people who used the Root de la Vega get MI9? Or is it just me? I don't remember if I deleted all the AT&T without backing up

Check this thread out for MI9 odin files. It was originally posted to help people downgrade... but since you are on MI1 you might be able to use it to upgrade.

I guess your last resort could be to march over to an AT&T store (Device Support Center) and get them to flash MI9 for you.

Yes.

I'm 100%, but I think MI9 will unroot you regardless since it has to be flashed.

Do a search for the original torrent file that DesignGears posted that contains everything you will need for updating to MI9 and rooting MI9.(it's on the internet trust me). My server is still seeding MI9 and it won't be stopping anytime soon!
I don't recommend going up to MJ5 just yet because there's still a lot of issues with it when it comes to receiving calls and there is currently no solid way to ODIN it over again is you muck something up.
i went to kit kat when they first released it now i would like to install the stock rom so i can sell my phone. i have no back up ( my card took it with it when it died) is there any way i can flash stock rom from safe strap? if so any one have a link? thank you
I'd like to know this, too. Updated to KK not knowing that downgrading was impossible. So now I need to find a new safety net in case I mess it up.
I'm not exactly sure where you are? Or what you're actually attemptong to do. But try this... IF you're NOT on "OFFICIAL" OTA KK 4.4.2

Easiest way is to just check what version rom you are using. Unless you are using custom rom, it'll either be MLG for leaked version Kitkat or NC2 which is the official latest Kitkat. I think the OP was talking about the leaked version Kitkat which has the old (better) bootloader.
The latest NC2 has updated bootloader which make it impossible to downgrade or root.
If you are still on MLG and never updated your bootloader (by installing NC2), then you should be able to go back to MJ5 JellyBean. Everyone or most of us on official NC2 is stuck with this version and regretting taking the OTA update.
Hello there was a new firmware update posted on Sam Mobile for the SM-9208 Taiwan today (N9208ZZT2AOK2). Has anyone updated to it yet? If so do you notice any difference and if are you still rooted.
Yeah, just noticed this update on Samobile but have not flashed yet. It is new firmware dated at 09/11. Wonder what are the changes.......

If you're rooted it won't update OTA. I used ODIN to upgrade to K2 and I've experienced no problems.

Agreed. That's the plan. I meant to ask if you're able to re-root after taking the update, using one of the root kernels. (Was posting my question in a hurry as I was going through TSA Checkpoint).

confirmed. flashed and rerooted w/o issue. only noticeable difference was the "Android Upgrading Screen" it's now full screen and similar to the one on my T-Mo Note 5 w/MM. @ravian29 - thanks for your reply as well.

I am still at 5.0 and I think I have corupted data files and need to do a total wip with a new firmware. If 5.1.1 is not good can some one tell me which firmware to get and how to get it? Also maybe a link on how to update it, I am no longer on the att network and I need my phone asap. Thanks a million.
AT&T Samsung-sm-G900A
So is it fairly accurate to assume that if I have an AT&T Samsung-sm-G900A with 5.1.1 update from AT&T I cannot root the phone because I can't downgrade the rom to a lower version that will allow me to root?

I'm currently on PD6. Can I flash this on top of that via odin or are there incremental updates I need to do prior to this? Thanks for the guidance!

Question about updating
Hi, first post on xda.
My phone is an AT&T version but I live in AU, and I want to update it to marshmallow from what it is currently on (5.1.1), and it won't update since I'm not in the U.S.
It's currently on AUCU3BO12.
Can I flash this PG1 without upgrading to anything else first? Can it go from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 directly from BO12? (According to AT&T's website, BO12 is a bit down the line in terms of updates, there have been a number since).
Edit: Also, which .tar file do I use out of the 4?
Thanks!
Does anyone know the answer to the above?
Finally unbricked my G920 Samsung Galaxy S6 with this
Thank you so much for this. I bricked my phone by stupidly flashing a 5.1 firmware and i've been scrambling to fix it for about a week now. And I couldn't find these files anywhere. Thank you so much

Already restarted to recovery and wiped cache partition and factory reset from there. Still stuck in boot screen...

You just need to load all 4 files up in Odin (AP, BL etc.) and click start.
Make sure your phone is in download mode.
