[Q] Need Help Unlocking Bootloader/Installing CM

I tried to unlock my bootloader, following various guides, and kept getting stuck on the "Download Mode !!!" part. I just want to install the latest stable version of Cyanogenmod on my phone since the stock ROM is being a real pain for me (very slow and unresponsive).
I have:
Android 4.1.2
Build Number: JZ054K
Software Version: AME-XXX
I read online that you need the Euro firmware to unlock the bootloader, can I flash the euro firmware and will it mess with my service? I'm confused as to how the firmware affects things since I've read conflicting information. I didn't flash my firmware a few hours before trying to unlock, so maybe that's the problem?

There aren't enough threads and guides for you to read already? Everything you need is already out there on this forum so why start another thread just because you are too lazy to search and read for yourself?

I have read around and have tried a number of guides a number of times. They haven't worked for me and I'm just wondering what i'm doing wrong. Even though all the information is out there, I don't have the experience to understand it apparently. I've spent hours trying to figure things out but i keep reading conflicting info and half-explained steps and now I'm just confused and would like a clear point in the right direction.
So, do i need to reflash the latest firmware, wait a few hours, then try again on a full charge? Or do i need a euro firmware? Which guide should i follow?
I've downloaded a few applications and driver packages and whatnot but if those could possibly conflict with each other and cause problems i could work with a fresh OS. I'm running OS X but i have linux VMs and friends with clean windows installs (mine is all sorts of messed up)

It isn't a question of firmware, the phone needs to have an unlockable bootloader to be able to be, well, unlocked. Here is a list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181581 of P880 bootloader versions. Follow the guide to check which BL your phone has.

Thats obsolete, all versions can be unlocked afaik, either with official method or by fuse editing. No need to keep sim card in,you just need proper drivers

Oh, OK, I didn't know that. But, even better, OP should not have any trouble, provided he follows the BL unlock guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Maybe his BL is already unlocked OR is relocked (meaning can't be unlocked anymore).

Its more likely that his drivers are messed up imo.
The fuse editing method should work for everyone, i recommend you give it a try

So the fuse method would be the "BL-unlock.bat" method on that bootloader unlock forum post? I've tried it before, but I'll try it again. The directions only say to run it, is there anything else I need? Now, since it's a .bat file I absolutely have to run it on Windows, right? Because if so I'll use a friend's computer instead of my windows installation.
What are the necessary installations before I run the file? How should I configure settings on my phone? (like what type of usb connection should it be)
There are a lot of things that people expect readers to know but I'm really not very knowledgeable about standard practices for phone stuff so I really need every step. Thanks for helping!

Since its.bat file, you can open it in text editor to see which commands it executes. I'd still recommend to do it on windows machine, other OSs may work but aren't tested.
You need abd & fastboot drivers, plus drivers for our device. It's been a while since I've done it, but afaik you can get proper device drivers via lg support tool.

Also, correct me if i'm wrong I only had stock for 2hours, but also stock needs usb debugging to be enabled or adb won't work?

Yep, afaik usb debugging needs to be enabled

When you are fast enough, it is possible in charging mode wihle the carger animation is shown. But you have install adb driver very fast...

So I'm pretty sure I got the bootloader unlocked, I ran the .bat file and it went through everything until the part where it checks to see if my bootloader is unlocked, it just froze forever, so I closed it.
How should I go about checking?
Also, what would be my next step now for installing CM10.1.3? I tried to follow the guide on the cyanogenmod wiki (install_CM_for_p880) (I can't post links yet)
...but ran into problems with pushing it into root with adb. It said I didn't have permissions, so I googled some stuff, but just got myself confused.

you can check your bl status by entering sw mode (phone off, hold vol+ and insert charger) or reeboting into bl (adb reboot oem-unlock)
to install cm steps are:
-install recovery (you can choose either cwm or twrp, it's more about looks than functions)
-download rom zip onto sd card
-install said zip from said recovery, there's no adb involved
Now my personal opinion, I really don't see the point in flashing 10.1, i would go staright for cm11 if i were you

Ok well I think I got things together more or less, eventually I tried to install CM10.1 with the ROM manager app. I forgot to select the options to wipe my data partitions and now I'm stuck in an endless boot loop every time I turn the phone on. I tried to boot from my backup using CWM which I made with the app prior to trying to install, and it gave me an error about an MD5 checksum failing, no matter what I tried. Should I do the factory reset/wipe option with CWM now? What's my best option.
Also why would you recommend CM11 over CM10.1? I don't want to have to deal with a nightly, all this phone stuff is a supreme headache to me.

Factory reset then get nandroid manager app and see if you can restore your stuff with that
CM11 is bugless atm and performance (imo) is way superior

So after a factory reset/data wipe, my phone just booted into CM10.1 and now that's working. And it looks like all of my stuff on the phone is still there (though of course apps aren't installed and whatnot, that wouldn't make sense). Thanks for all the help!
I tried to find a feature list or something to see what exactly is better about CM11, and found out that "stable" doesn't exactly mean stable for CM, and that it looks like a good idea to update, so I think I will try to update to that. Do you know anywhere that has an actual feature list to show me what CM11 does that CM10.1 doesn't?

I've been trying to root my phone for a while, I've done it before: both my S II and S III were international variants, and rooting those devices was very simple. But after getting an S IV from America and consensually downloading a samsung issued update -- I had yet to read up on the disadvantages of knox -- my rooting and android experience took a turn for the worse.
Long story short -- I know developers are a proud bunch who value their time -- I tried rooting my phone yesterday after almost smashing my phone on a coffee table. They say it's a well known side effect of Touchwiz, but I'll leave that to you.
I used a towelroot.com root -- a wonderful tool, if I may say so. After that, I visited the CM website and picked out the compatible CM11. I never got to flashing it though, as my problems arose while installing a recovery.
I had downloaded an app, a something recovery or another. They had an option to flash recoveries on there--it would download your recovery for you and do all the work, which seemed plausible as most video tutorials demonstrated. To my astonishment, doing so bricked my phone.
I tracked back, looked for the samsung stock rom, downloaded all 2.2 gb's of it and flashed it. It worked. My phone was functional but I suspect something within it stinks. My device, apparently for security reasons, wont let my wifi or 4g to establish a connection. It's making it impossible for me to fix this problem as I can't root my device or flash a custom rom.

SGH-I337UCUFNC1 baseband. Build Number ending with: NC1.
Android version: 4.2.2
Post problem:
Baseband: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2
Android version 4.3.
If I could find my original stock 4.2.2 NC1 version and get simple instructions on how to re-install it back to stock version, I'd be very grateful.
If you know how I could fix the internet issue on the MK2 one, and provide some simple instructions of how to root it, I'd be grateful too.
If you think neither would work, and have something else in mind, Im open to your suggestions.

Two things:
1. You're posting in the wrong forum, this is the forum for the S4 Active i537, a different phone than the regular S4 i337.
2. The i337 had a locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked. Therefore it is impossible to install a custom recovery other than SafeStrap and it is impossible to install ROMs that are not TouchWiz-based ROMs.

Brand new, 4.2.2, Any reason not to update to latest firmware?

Hi folks,
Just got my TF701T from Amazon on the $279 deal. I've connected it to my wifi but have not even set up a google account for it yet. It's doing an initial charge.
Is there any compelling reason not to let the update happen? The main short term use for the tablet will be that my 7 year old son will play games on it. Eventually, I'd still like to unlock it and maybe to a custom OS, but for now it's plain Jane use.
The only special thing I might want to do is get Helium/Carbon going so I can backup / restore game positions for him... I've got his status on several games saved from another tablet that had root and I backed them up. Would like to restore if possible. Does this require root?

Hi, before giving my opinion, I would suggest you to look through the forum while you are here. That said, I have some opinions against updating to 4.4.2. The main reason is that there are some battery issues on that boot loader for some unknown reason. Also, there is no root exploit available for the 4.4.2 version without having to unlock the boot loader. I was told that 4.3 was the best to stay on right now if you can.I just recently got my tablet too from that same deal. On 4.3 there is a easy root exploit called towelroot available, so you can root without unlocking.

Thanks. I've used Carbon and believed it requires root, too. I'm a bit surprised that Towelroot wouldn't work on 4.4.2, as it was originally designed for 4.4.2 on Samsung and similar related kernel units. I've used it on my Samsung S4, and it required being on a pretty up to date 4.4.2 build. Wouldn't work on 4.3. But it may be different on the Asus.
I saw a mention off battery drain on 4.4.2 but without details. I'll continue looking. For now I've charged then powered off the tablet. No time to set it up tonight anyway. Seems like a very nice unit though.

Yeah, from what I understand, towelroot worked on the galaxy s4 (my current awesome phone) because the exploit wasn't patched at that time for the phone, but sadly Asus patched it as for the 4.4.2 drain, Netflix seems to be one of the couple of apps that is really draining power. Not really sure about it, but I'm probably not going to update until the next update is released.

Thanks. I read up a bit and indeed see how they patched the exploit before the 4.4.2 build, so sadly no Towelroot in Kitkat for us, without unlocking the bootloader and voiding warranty.
Since I will be using the tablet just for kid use, 4.3 will be just fine for now. Which of the (US) firmwares is the best to flash? I'm having some trouble relating the build numbers listed to the "4.2.2 / 4.3 / 4.4.2 etc" nomenclature. I've been reviewing the Device Essential Material thread but I'm still learning the ropes on the Asus.
So as I understand it, I get the right one downloaded, unzip it (one level), put it in sdcard root directory, reboot, and it auto-applies. Is that correct? Then Towelroot,, presumably SuperSU, then I can freeze the update processes with TiBU or somesuch. IS there a good description of what to freeze to prevent further update notices?
Anything else I should know? I'm still catching up.

You can use any on. I just used the one that was on my tablets before (which was US). 10.26.1.18 is the 4.3 file to grab. Yup, unzip once and put it on the sd root file. For me, when I rebooted it, it let me know that there was a downloaded update detected (NOT the normal "click this button to download the system update")(be really careful about that one). Once I tapped the detected update file, it showed me it was the 10.26.1.18 file and I told it to install it.
If you want to see what to freeze, go into the towelroot thread in the Q&A section and look for my posts on the last page or so. I was asking exactly the same thing and they answered it all for me. Good luck and let me know if it goes well!!

You got it.
The .18 firmware is the JB 4.3. But stick to your SKU (US, WW - whatever it is now).
Once rooted freeze DMClient and CMClient and you won't be bothered with OTA updates.

For anyone who reads this and needs to do the same thing, it was super easy. Just plugged the new Tab into the PC via USB, opened up to "Internal Storage", copied the UL-K00C-US-10.26.1.18-user.zip file over there, and rebooted. It auto-applied, rebooted again. Eventually I had to delete the .zip file from the internal storage, because on each reboot it would notice it and spend time figuring out if it had new updates or not.
Then Towelroot, SuperSU, and used App Quarantine-Root to freeze DMClient and CMClient. Rebooted again and no more update waiting for download messages.
I'm good to go!

First, i can confirm battery issues with 4.4.2. Android sometimes does not go to deepsleep (even if there are no addition apps installed, it seems a general problem). If i charge the tablet to 100% and go to bed, on the next morning i can be glad, if i have 30% battery left. Not always, but every 2.nd or 3rd night.
Second, a little question. Becauce of this "bug" i'd like to root my tablet and use a custom rom. I would like to use this method "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604462 <- [MOD] JB 4.3+ | TF701T | Flashable Root Method v2 | Asus Stock 10.26.1.7/18
My first problem is the unlock app from asus. On the support site a text says: "1. Only suitable for Android4.2 Jelly Bean OS version" . But, according to most of the threads here, i should also work with 4.4.2??
The second question is, if the root method i just linked, works without any problems with the last asus update 4.4.2?
Using the tablet with this battery issue is horrible.

Reg. Battery drain: Did you run Netflix on those nights you had that severe battery drain?
Reg. Unlock: The tool should work on any fimware version. Just run it. Worst case scenario: It won't work.
Reg. Root: Why would you root the stock rom if you want to replace it with a custom rom anyway?
To install a custom rom you need to:
A) unlock the bootloader
B) flash a custom recovery in fastboot
C) create a nandroid of your stock rom in recovery
D) wipe cache, Dalvik and data using your custom recovery
E) flash the custom rom (which is rooted anyway).

NOTE: This is a guide for the TF700!! The general instructions on flashing, fastboot commands etc still apply. The specifics like recovery and version, bootloader and version etc DO NOT.

Thanks. Yes i know. I like the look the stock rom has. Therefore i first wanted to test, if i can stop the battery drain, if i use apps like greenify to send a few apps to deepsleep.
I rooted yesterday and tested it. Unfortunately, even with greenify i have the same problem. Every time i use the keydock, the tablet does not go into deepsleep mode. I checked with wakeup detector if i can find out which app is bad, but there are no apps which wake up the tablet more that 5 or 6 times.... If i use the tablet without the dock i dont have this problem (or just when i use netflix and dont reboot after usage)
Now i will try a custom rom....maybe it helps.

Lollipop 5.1.1 on T715?

OK I'm a complete newbie here. I bought the 8" S2 International unlocked version from Amazon and will take it to AT&T to activate it tomorrow. It's on 5.0.2 and is not seeing any OTA updates. Does anyone know if there's a way to get 5.1.1 OTA? If not, does anyone know if Samsung has commented as to whether they'll release 5.1.1, or even Marshmallow, for this device or will I have to go to a custom ROM?
Also, is there an absolute beginners guide to this site? I've been reading through the threads and keep seeing terms like odin, twrp, and many others that I don't know what they mean and I'd like to figure out.

i just received the same device yesterday and so far, it's working just fine on at&t: including data full phone features (i wasn't aware that this version of the Tab S2 had a full fledged phone). i inserted my nano sim from my dual-sim note5 and the S2 configured everything automatically. also, i didn't see an OTA when i checked yesterday and there's nothing at sammobile.com which is where one can generally find firmware (stock ROM) for Samsung devices. any custom ROM right now will likely be 5.0.2.

Also, is there an absolute beginners guide to this site? I've been reading through the threads and keep seeing terms like odin, twrp, and many others that I don't know what they mean and I'd like to figure out..

Odin = Windows based application used to flash firmware to Samsung devices.
TWRP = a custom recovery that - once your phone is rooted (similar to admin privileges on windows pc) - allows one to flash a custom ROM or other components/features not on a stock device. you can also create backups/nandroids of your device so you can restore your device if something goes wrong (similar to resorting a windows system image to a new hard drive). always, always backup when trying things out. tutorials are here, but sometimes not easily located via search. :good:

Root Acer Iconia One 8 B1-850?

Hello XDA,
I just purchased a new Acer Iconia One 8 B1-850 and was wondering if I could root it.
I see many posts on B1-810 and similar, but nothing for the B1-850.

i want to root to enable the multi user option by updating the build.prop file, i've been able to connect with ADB but the device isn't visible in windows or mac (tried both) when you reboot into boot loader, in fact it doesn't appear to boot into boot loader it just seems to power off (when using ADB reboot command or choosing boot loader from the recovery menu) so i wonder if its locked out somehow??

Need it too. Did anyone find a way to root B1-850?

I too just purchased a B1-850 tablet, but I've figured out how to root it. Really quite simple. Just use Kingroot:
1.) Navigate to https://kingroot.net/ from your tablet
2.) Download the APK for android
3.) Install said APK (this requires you to have allowed installation from unkown sources in the "Security" panel of the settings menu)
4.) Load up the app and follow its instructions
5.) Reboot and try it out
For good measure, I would also unlock the "Developer Options" panel and allow USB debugging (adb access) and such; I did this before proceeding. You'll have to search for instructions on that yourself, its well documented.
This all worked for me this morning! Really looking forward to unlocking the potential of this cheapy tablet.

Kingroot worked first try, just swap their super user program with supersu. I am having trouble installing the xposed framework though if anyone has any tips.

I was able to root, now I need to install a custom recovery. CWM says this model is not in the supported list. Has anyone been able to install a recovery? I need NANDROID backup functionality.

I made a thread walking you through how to do it on this tablet in the guides area but just use flash fire for recovery and xposed install

Did the B1-850 hardware updated in anyway? I was able to root it in June 2016, but after a screen repair and factory reset and fresh rom from acer, king root and all others can't work. I'm stuck without any root options. Any idea?

There was recently new firmware released for this tablet (08/24/16, Build #: AV0L0.RV09RC04.WW.GEN1), and a handful of updates (08/25/16, 08/26/16) from Acer. I have this same tablet, and I'm unable to root after flashing to the firmware released on the 24th, and latest firmware (Build #: AV0L0.RV0BRC02.WW.GEN1) as well. Hopefully someone can find a fix, as the few different methods I've attempted simply will not work with the latest firmware from Acer.

On KingRoot Please click submit search if enough people do they will find a root until then just hold tight.

I have done this a bunch, sadly still no love. It's annoying me not being able to root a relatively cheaper tablet, as these tend to get rooted first since they get in more people's hands faster. Oh well, just have to have patience.

Thanks, I was having problems, two different rooters failed and I wondered if it was the recent software update! The image version on my B1-850 is the same as you have quoted! Please post if you find a solution, some apps that need deleting are annoying.

I was having a problem rooting my device and wondered if it was the recent software update, and my image version is as you have quoted! I f you manage to root your device please post!

The latest release of KingRoot is able to root the latest firmware for this tablet. I saw there was a new release of KingRoot back on the 23rd, and it's working as it should. I grabbed the working version here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=21707

hi guys. any idea how to recover b1-850 from bootloop?

I no its a little late but i rooted mine with the kingoroot one click root apk. Ive installed xposed framework and customized like crazy everything from fonts to boot animation. Cant find a custom recovery tho.

I cannot root it with any of the tools I have tried (Kingo ROOT, KingRoot, etc). Anyone know any method that works?

This device has made an idiot of me. If I can be of any assistance finding a root exploit for this device let me know. I will gladly write a detailed procedure of the process. I made the mistake of assuming since it was an entry level, inexpensive device, the path to root would be simple. Three months later none of the common "one-click" programs has found an exploit. I have a copy of stock rom for recovery so testing is not a problem for me. It's a matter of pride at this point. So much so I found one on sale for $60 and bought it just for this purpose. I have followed every link I can find associated with this device to a dead end. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here, still no root for me. Usually these cheapo tablets are not as locked down.

I have given up getting assistance from xda on this device. Its as political here as anywhere else. I don't drive a Samsung so nobody wants to help with root. I've heard every excuse from locked bootloader (unlockable in dev options) to what one dev actually told me,"There's little interest in spending energy on an inexpensive device." I understand, but why misrepresent the site by implying all android devices are treated the same? Hell on the Iconia One 8 thread, it says that the B1-850 does not have a MTK SoC, but instead has an Intel Atom chip. Then they send you to another thread where, of course, there is no B1-850 listed! That's because it uses a MTK8163 SoC. In both tablets.
