root after 4.4.4 update? - Moto X Q&A

I'm currently on 4.4.2, stock and no root. I haven't yet received the update, but many people in my country are getting the update, so I'll get it soon.
I can see a lot of people are saying that 4.4.4 cannot be rooted.I have plans to root my phone as soon as my warranty expires, so should I update to 4.4.4?or is all this 'cannot root after 4.4.4' is for some selected carriers?

Please see one of the many threads already posted regarding this. For instance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/root-moto-x-4-4-4-verizon-t2830043
IF (and ONLY if) you are unlocked, or CAN unlock (bootloader-unlock), you CAN root by following the advice given in the thread linked above.

Question in regards to 1.29.xxx OTA?

Man after a fun 2 hours getting my phone back to stock, now I'm wondering, does the 1.29.xxx update even apply to my particular device? Mine is an AT&T, with version 1.26.502.12. It was until i used the RUU to regain stock and lose root. But everything i've scoured mentioned updates to 1.29.401 and an update to the Dev version. My version isn't even listed of the RU variants list
http://xda4.androidrevolution.nl/db_mirror/ROMs/RUU_Variants.txt
So, would anyone explain to me, WTF? Is the 1.29 update not meant for my phone? I've run the device updater several times and it says my phone is up to date. I guess I'm asking primarily because I read that this update helps fix some issues like the responsiveness of the back button.
You have to wait till att approves the update, some carriers can be very slow with approving updates. You cannot install updates which are not meant for your carrier, but since you are already unlocked you can just install a custom rom and enjoy the updates all the same.

[Q] How will "modified" software status affect OTAs?

This has been briefly touched on in the root threads, but I still can't seem to find a definitive answer. And it could be that there's not an answer... yet. I'm just curious about how the software being listed "modified" will affect things like OTAs and interactions with Moto. There was some talk of software being listed as 0/0, 0/1, or 1/1. As in unlocked and/or rooted. Does anybody know what we will be listed as with Mofo root? Or is this uncharted territory and we will just have to wait and see what happens when the Lollipop OTA drops?
+1 good questions I have the same ones
We don't really know yet. However, likely:
1. Modified; OTA will not install and will spit out an error.
2. Unmodified but q/e 0/1: will likely install. This means you would have rooted in the past, but flashed a fully stock Motorola image to get back to 'Unmodified',' and so it should install.

[Q] Confusion about rooting

I'm looking to probably upgrade from my GS3 to the GS5. I've read some of the posts on here about rooting, but I'm still a bit confused. It seems that root is only available for 4.4.2, but then you can't keep root and upgrade to 5.0.1. Is that correct?
Also, could anyone point me to a thread that lays out the root method for the phone? I see a lot of people talking ABOUT the thread existing, but no actual links to the thread.
Thanks in advance!

Note that OTA 5.0 just got pushed by AT&T and if you take it, there is currently no way to root or downgrade to 4.4.2 to use towelroot. In fact if you try to downgrade after the 5.0 OTA, you will end up bricking the phone. I'm sure devs around are working on finding a way to root the OTA, but as of today there isn't a way. There is an alternate method using FireFlash which is in beta to install 5.0 on a rooted 4.4.4. Note that if you are just about to buy a S5, it might be preloaded with 5.0 which until probably some time in the future is not rootable.
I would suggest delaying your upgrade from S3 to S5 until someone figures out how to root 5.0 OTA.

Gotcha. I'm not gonna not upgrade simply because root may not be possible yet if it's already 5.0, but that's good to know. Thanks.

Root and upgrade out of country G900A

I'm not very hacky or what you call it, my know-how in this region is not very good, so I'm hoping someone here is able to help me.
When I was in USA I bought myself a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 (G900A), paid it off and had it service unlocked (called AT&T and they unlocked it for me). Then I went back to Ukraine and now I want to to be rooted... and have lollipop.
I don't know how to upgrade it to lollipop... Kies and the phone says I have the latest firmware and I cant get it updated. On top of that, I've read in posts here that if I update before rooting it, I might be in trouble later on the road.
Towelroot V3 says that my phone is not supported so I can't root it that route...
I've read tutorials here about rooting with the ND3 update... first of all, I don't know what the ND3 update is and how to obtain it since I can't update my phone OTA in Ukraine.
How do I go about this?
More information about my phone (since I learned more information about this process).
Kernel date is Tuesday July 22 2014... towelroot is said to work for any before June 3, 2014... this is probably why my phone isn't supported.
Also, is it true that Android 5.0 removes the SD Card functionality???
Well, I got it rooted... thanks to muniz_ri!
I just went ahead and risked it, not knowing what ND3 or NG3 was.
My next step is flashing it to Android 5+ ... that is if it doesn't remove the SD Card functionality
Well, I found these instructions on flashing my G900A to a pre-rooted stock lollipop... the problem I'm having is with FireFlash... I can't seem to find that app anywhere.

Thank you!!!!!
Wait, I'm confused - you say you were able to downgrade your G900A to a rooted 4.x state? I thought root was impossible once you take the 5.0 update?

You can only if you didn't take on the 5.0 OC4 bootloader and kept OA1
I didn't take the 5.0 update since I am out of the country and OTA updates don't come here... but I did have the NG3 update... so I downgraded to ND3, rooted and went back to NG3... then I flashed a prerooted 5.0 stock ROM with OA1 (I think...) and now I'm using it...

Looking to upgrade my phone to the droid turbo.. but few questions before I do

1. Can I root this phone? is there a root out... yet?
2. I dont like lolipop because I use SBGAMEHACKER alot and it only works on kitkat .. , so if only 5.1.1 is rootable, is the bootloader unlocked so i can load cynomod 4.4.4 or something on it?
in other words, if the device comes with 5.1.1 already installed, can it be downgraded to any version of kitkat and get rooted??
thanks in advance, and sorry if any of these been answered before but there is too many topics and half of them kind of mislead me, so i apologize in advance if this post gonna offend anybody here if its been asked before.
you should read a little more. the answers are all here.
1. There is root. IF you start on 4.4.4. Then you can stay on 4.4.4 or go to 5.1.1 and be rooted. But if you start on anything above 4.4.4 you cannot get root as of now. And there is a fair chance of that happening. Some people's replacement units now ship with 5.1.1
2. No bootloader unlock. Some people are working on it, supposedly. Haven't heard from them in a while.

5.1.1 is not available. The most current version of Android available for the Turbo is 5.1.
