[Q] Xperia Z1 4.4.4 Sony's "What's New" app - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just installed 4.4.4 update on my Xperia Z1. Now when pressing and holding the home button to access Google Now, in addition to Google Now, there is also a shortcut to Sony's "What's New" app. Is there a way to get rid of this (without having to disable the app itself)? I don't mind the app per se, but I don't want it to have a shortcut in the same way of Google Now. Worse, because of the additional icon, the Google Now shortcut is moved slightly to the right instead of straight in the middle. It's annoying.

If you are rooted or want to root device - yes.
You can simply delete app from app/pri-app folder and shortcut will be history...

Really can't remember, it's been a long time since I had to delete it.
It has to be in app or priv-app folder..
Maybe it's under other name...
Try to search a bit more...

Tayutama's JPM Froyo w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel - 11/04/2010 -- possible security concern
Installed the above ROM.
ROM Post link:

Working good on my Captivate.
One concern: How do I take off the "minus" marks on the app icons that lets us delete apps right from the home screen (the screen we get when we click on the home button).
I see this as a security risk. I have app protector pro. But then, we can just delete the app protector pro in this mode without even asking for any password or anything, and all my apps are open for everyone to use.
Could anyone please help me take off this option to quick uninstall apps from home screen.
This thread is a joke, right?
wow just great now this post with almost the exact same title as the rom post will get me confused which is which from now on

Nope. I am serious. So far I realized that unless a person knew how to mod a Captivate, he didn't know how to access protected apps. But now, even a layman can just delete the 'app protector pro' and access all the apps that are supposed to locked by it.

You do know that once you rooted your phone, anyone with a little knowledge can do much more than simply delete apps... just don't lose your phone or give it to an iphone buddy who might wonder what the neat little thingys on your screen do
Bye. What launched are you using that you see this in.... and deleting an icon from your home screen does not uninstall it on any that I have used

Not the icon. Like when u press the home icon, u can see all the apps present on ur device. For user installed apps, u can see a small "minus" in a circle on the right top of app icon, just like in iphone when u go to edit mode. click on that, and it will uninstall the app.

Pardon me if my concern is not really one. I am just expressing myself.
I use Application Protection from the market. Upon uninstalling any app it always asks for the pin. There is no removing the program without it.

Right, this is as long as the app is there. I am telling about a situation where the protection app itself is removed. I could remove it without it asking me for the pin.

Another possible solution is to install another launcher that dosen't have uninstall in the application tray or doesn't work at this time (my LG Optimus below) and use root explorer to remove the two launcher and reboot.

Why not just have a lockscreen?
You do realize that if someone gets ahold of your phone everything can be taken out by someone who is skilled enough... right?

Others have already pointed this out, but what you need to do is dl and install a different launcher from Market and then uninstall the TWLauncher. Problem solved.
Just because TWLauncher is the default in Cog 2.4.1 doesn't mean that you have to use it. Get another launcher. Or you could try never letting your phone out of your sight...

I recently updated my phone to 4.2.2 and I finally legally bought Titanium Backup Pro so i can be updated from time to time.
But for my unpleasant suprise, i can not find "convert to user app" option in Titanium Backup Pro 6.0.5.1. I looked everywhere, and I cant convert Facebook, Maps and other apps..

As I see it, some apps can be converted to user app, such as the Camera. Whereas some apps like "Album" cannot.
That's how it is for me.
So there is definitely an issue...
You are lucky, since SOME apps still can be converted... I can't convert any: see pic of "camera" ("convert to user app" should be second from the bottom but doesn't exist/show up anylonger).
I also wrote the developer... Lets see!

Convert to User
I am new to this but found it in TBU Pro 6.3.1 under [Special Features] Create "update.zip" This creates a CWM flashable zip file as a user app.
Hope this helps someone.
Hey, any news about this? I have the same problem, cant find the option to convert any app to user app
Then complain to the developer of TiBU.
The support email is listed on the Play store listing.
You will surely get more help than asking people here that are nothing to do with developing the app.

I have just updated to latest release 6.1.4, there is option to convert to system so but not user app.
I never really used that option I only used convert to system app.
Was it present in version 6.0.4

Hiding pictures app like vaulty?

Hello.
I know that kitkat implemented something about only letting the certain app to gain access to the folder it's using or something like that. So applications like vaulty doesn't work anymore. Dunno why they even made it like that. It worked perfect on JB. Why change something wich is working.
But, are there any apps or ways of hiding pics/video and whatever nowadays on Kitkat firmware?

Hide It Pro have just a big issue to me, it move the pictures to his folder and is mess up with my stuff, I will prefer the pictures remain where they are.
AppsLock is very good but it missing the option to select single files, it just work for Apps, still good BTW.

Speak Now app as default.

On the old O.S. for this watch, when i tapped the screen I got the 'speak now' app which allowed me to easily navigate or get information while driving. Now, after the upgrade, i get the app drawer and have to scroll the 3rd page to get to it. Not very convenient. Anyone know how to set the speak now back to the default?
thanks

Stock Phone App - Display only contacts with Numbers - Possible to run the old app?

Hello all,
Back in KitKat (I think), google's default app for phone/contacts had the option to only display contacts with numbers. (great idea!)
For reasons beyond anything I can imagine, they stupidly removed this feature. (Horribly stupid idea...sigh)
Is it possible to run the older phone app/contacts app on newer roms? 7.0?
I like the stock app. Fantastic app, excepting for the horrible stupid decision to break needed functionality by Google.
Thoughts? Options? Ideas?
Thanks!
Just a thought you could find the apk from KitKat and then install that. If it works. Use something like titanium backup and long press on the app from within TB and select remove market link. This should prevent the app from auto updating. Haven't tried it but i agree. The contact with phone numbers only was great.
