[Q] Internal Storage Not Recognized. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Captivate I'm using as my daily driver right now. Until recently I was running Cyanogenmod 11, but got tired of doing a wipe and install every time the Google Processes started failing, so I tried out ParanoidAndroid 4.3. After flashing the new ROM and GApps, I realized only 1.26 GB of Internal Storage is being recognized. My external SD card is recognized, but not the remainder of my 16 GB of onboard storage. I have tried wiping Cache Partition, Dalvik Cache, Data Reset and reinstall, and have tried formatting /system and /data, but cannot get it to recognize the storage no matter what. Using "Explorer" by Speed Software (first file explorer that popped up on Play Store so if I need to use something else to help diagnose, please let me know) my external card is under the root folder "emmc" and is designated "sdcard1". "sdcard0" (which I assume to be my onboard storage) is under the root folder sdcard, but when I click on it in my file explorer, I get the notification that "The SD card is not currently mounted" I'm using CWM 6.0.4.8, when I reboot into recovery and go to "Mounts and Storage" "sdcard0, sdcard1, /data, /datadata, /system" all have the options to "mount" next to them. I select this, reboot, and nothing has changed. I really don't know what else to try.

Also, the permissions on sdcard0 are RWX------, while the permissions on sdcard1 are RWXRWXR--. Don't know that that would affect whether or not the system recognizes it, but wanted to give all the info I could.

[Q] Help, all wiped but can't install zip

looks like i am in a big problem here.
i tried to use Clockwork to wipe and install a new rom, but after wipe dalvik, cache and data, i cant update the rom.
i tried to use too diferent zips i have in my sd, but i get a error.
trying "applying a zip from sd card" and "choose zip from sd", i can't enter in the "_external sd" folder, it just return to the previous folder (internal sd) and there is only a "update.zip" there wich i don't know what it is. I had the hope it was a update i did with rom manager but this zip doesn't work too.
if i try the roms that are in the clockwokrmod folder, i get "no files found" and i have to folders inside clockworkmod folder.
what i should try?
now when i click in any option stuk with a image of the exclamation and the Android the android dummy ((((
edit: oh, the menu is back, but i still don't know what to do.
Did you try flash another ROM for odin?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
i restarded the ox2. I see sd, system and data was unmonted. But even with this mounted don'est work. I am not able to enter in the dir _external sd.
but in the clockwork folder in the internal sd i have 2 backups and they doesn't work too "no files found"
I restarted it now in normal mode and the system is there, just in default mode, asking me to configure, etc.
If i wiped data, cache and everything, where was the files that allowed this rom to "survive"? At least i can use the phone today. I am almost giving up of flash the rom
Please help, why clockwork did not recognize any zip? looks like it was not able to enter any directory
I think you need to select install zip from internal sd. That is the only way I found to install the .zips on my _ExternalSD folder.
BTW, I won't be able to restore the CWM backup because needs to be on an external SD.
I hope it helps.

Sounds like it's a case of switched mounting points, try install from internal sd.

the problem is that it was accessing any folder, even in internal sd. I don't if the app was able to recognize that there was not a valid file inside the folder or was really a error.
i am almost giving up. Thinking in change only baseband, as i believe it is safer than chaging a rom.
i don't understand how/where the device was able to boot with a "new" rom after the reboot. I thought after clear data, cache and factory reset was like formating Windows in pc. And the last command when i was in clockwork was a simple reboot, not recovery, etc.
Did you put the .zip on your external sd card? In that case, you should go to mounts and storage and select mount sdcard. If it is already mounted, unmount and mount it again. It helps in some cases. Works for me at least, I cannot guarantee that it will work for you.

[Q] SD Card can't be formatted nor add files to it.

Hi, all.
I have some problem on my previous sdcard (so sad :crying and it's broken.
Now i have a new sdcard (yeah...) and another problem appears!
I formatted my sdcard and it said that the sdcard formatted successfully, but when i mount my sdcard into computer, the existing files still there.
Whether i add some files into sdcard (for example: i just copied JB Mini ROM into /sdcard/John) and i rebooted my phone into recovery mode.
When i enter the recovery menu and want to install the ROM's zip, the file cannot be found. Then i copied JBMini's ZIP file once again into my sdcard once again. I mount my sdcard into my computer with "Mount USB Storage" in recovery. When i'm trying to install it, it says (bad) errors. Then i reboot my phone again and the files (JBMini ROM) dissapeared!
Can somebody help me?
If the recovery says "bad file" then that means that the zip is corrupted..
Retry downloading it/retransferring it to the sd card..

Hmmm...What ROM are you using? If you're using a custom one. Try getting back to stock Eclair 2.1 and check if it does the same problem. If so contact the shop where you bought the SD Card.

Haha... I don't know anything.
Maybe i should throw this microSD from the uppest floor of high building, then go to the downstairs by stairs and get it back again.
It's not about corrupted ROM files or somewhat, but again, this is SD Card problem.
My sdcard have two partitions, FAT32 and ext4.
I had tried to format it from recovery, but it failed.
I had tried to format it from my mom's Blackberry (which is good in fixing corrupted sdcard, but failed with my first sdcard) and it couldn't finish the formatting process.
I had tried to open my sdcard on my computer and i format it and it said something like this : "Windows couldn't finish the format process" (My Windows 8 using Indonesia language)
I had tried to delete all partition from MiniTool Partition, but when MiniTool refreshed the devices list, that two partitions (FAT32 and EXT4) still exist.
What should i do now? I'm really confused with sdcard problems, what they (sdcard) wants?
Format the ext4 partition. Alfs kernel has that option in it's recovery. Then try again.
Note : Not responsible if your SD broke after this.

Looks to me like you've touched the write-protect switch on the sdcard.
Remove it and sllide the switch back again..
Try for a low level format

[Q] problem with sdcard

Hello everybody
After two days of research and attempts, I finally gave up and decided to ask for direct help.
So, a week ago I rooted an Orange-branded Ace and flashed a few ROMs over the next 3-4 days to try to find the one that could suit better.
However, I screwed up something cause at some point in the process the internal sdcard was not seen anymore.
I mean, I can still go in Recovery or Download mode, flash stuff through Odin, boot without problems and use my phone.
Although, any direct access to internal storage is forbidden.
So, no rooting.
Both 2e and 3e CWM can't mount sdcard.
The type of messages I get :
When I pick "apply update from sdcard" -> E:Failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)
When I rebbot after flashing -> -- Appling Multi-CSC... Installing Multi-CSC. Can't access to '/system/csc/whatever/system/'.
No way to get a USB connection either (different computer were tried), all with drivers correcting installed.
Also tried to get to the storage mass with MiniTool partition Wizard or through Disk management, but nothing.
Factory reset is useless, as well as any recovery's wiping process.
No sdcard formatting is possible.
I flashed several stock firmwares, went all the way back to Froyo, but nothing.
I wanted to try and flash a rooted stock rom, but couldn't find any /:
Hopefully one of you will come up with the fix.
Anyway, thanks in advance to everybody.
Cheers

Sdcard is an external memory, and yes you can't manage it without root permissions so when you connect your phone via USB to your pc you can't see your internal memory partition, only the external (micro sd-card).
Maybe your sdcard is corrupted, try to format it with an USB adapter and then try again

Hey, thanks for the reply
Although, I'm afraid I might not have been clear.
I haven't mounted any microSD so far and I've always been able to access to /mnt/sdcard (before screwing up).
Now, after flashing anything on the device, trying to access to My Files - or whatever file manager - will result in a dead end, since no sdcard is seen by the device itself (so, for example, I have no access to DCIM, or Music, Movies, anything).
I can't format the device cause:
- the computer doesn't see it (although drivers installed), not even from Disk Manager
- general disk-formatting/wiping softwares don't see it
- formatting from Recovery is impossible

But you're talking about the microSD, right?
What I mean is that, at the moment, I don't have one mounted in the phone.
I've had one before having problems, but I messed up partitions, so had to format everything anyways.
But, right now, it's out of the phone.
Also, as I was saying, I cannot access common folders like Music or Downloads, nor can I drop the update.zip on the internal memory to root, and I don't think any of this has anything to do with external storage /:

I'm sorry, but I might be misunderstanding.
All these folders are in the sdcard folder.
But the sdcard folder is internal, not a microSD, am I right?
When you suggest that the "SD-CARD" might be corrupted and that I should format it, are you referring to the sdcard folder?

/sdcard = external memory = YOUR MICRO SDCARD!!!!! = THE THING YOU INTRODUCE INTO THE SIDE SLOT!! NOT INTERNAL MEMORY!!!
I'am refering to your SDCARD (above you can see what sdcard means)
And yes all these folder are saved in it
The Galaxy Ace does NOT have an internal sdcard. /sdcard is the external sdcard.

Hi inthered, I think this is getting confusing.
Sd card is the external storage, where you usually have the data, music, photos, etc. Is this sd card that your Myfiles see, if it isnt there Myfiles cant see anything, cause it cant access internal storage.
To access internal storage you must be rooted and have an app that could do that. I believe you said that your phone inst rooted, so you can only see external storage and seems that it isnt there. So you cant access all that folders ( music, etc,) cause they arent there
Have to mount SD first. You can format SD with Mini tool partition Wizard, in FAT32, and use it only as external storage.
Or you can create in this external storage one partition to help manage the internal storage, but that partition wont be seen by normal apps, like Myfiles, ou PC explorer, and you need to be rooted and everything else that didnt worked first time [but it works, I guarantee that]
To finish, internal storage can only be seen in rooted devices and with some apps ( never Myfiles)
Sorry if I wrote too much, but everyone was right, it had to be better explained
Hope I helped
thanks a lot everyone.
sorry for having been insistent, but i really missed the point about the no-internal-sdcard issue (as you might have noticed).
found only today a little time to re-partition sdcard and flash, and it finally works.
thanks again

help, problem with internal storage

Hi at all, I've a problem with my samsung galaxy note n7000, I have the latest 4.1.2 original samsung touchwiz , I've only rooted it,
the problem is that the android os doesn't mount the internal sd card, and get me a notification that say "blank usb memory or not supported file system", I tried to reboot custom recovery(philz recovery) and wipe data and cache, format sd card but nothing works, can anyone help me????
Did you format it to fat32? In recovery did you try formating the external storage?

I'm facing the same problem right now. It occurred after I did a hard reset. In the best case scenario, this is just a partition table corruption, but in the worst, a physically damaged card.
On Linux, I have fixed partition tables with a nifty tool called gpart (not gparted). There is a similar utility available for Linux, Windows, Mac etc. called TestDisk. Unfortunately, these tools are not available on Android. However, there is something called aparted available on Play Store that supposedly fixes filesystems.
I have installed it, but it wants to install some browser addons too. I've tried to repair the filesystem that it shows as empty, but no luck so far. I will shortly check its online manual, but I hope we can get something like gpart on Android.

Hi, I have been able to get the Internal SDCard (/storage/sdcard0) mounted again, albeit with loss of data. Look at my recent post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48595569&postcount=24
and the one from which I got the hint
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35726016&postcount=6
The step by step procedure is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26285877&postcount=12
but if you have only one partition damaged, you could just check it with e2fsck and then, if necessary, recreate it with mkfs.exfat or the other method in the referred post.
EDIT: link to parted and other files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38598228&postcount=4
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/htc-droid-eris/78650-internal-storage-partitions-screwed-up.html
I don't know if you can recover your original data - I had tried formatting the partition, by mistake, to ext4 with mke2fs. You could avoid this, and see if you can back up your partition with dd before re-formatting it to fat32.
solved, I download latest frimware, and flash it throught odin and all are fixed

TWRP 3 for droid turbo

OK other phone I had has external SD card. When I wiped data it wiped internal SD completely. Since turbo has no external SD, will it wipe completely or just Android file data and preserve other files on internal SD. If it does wipe internal SD completely how would you flash ROM? Thanks for any advice.

That depends on what kind of wipe you do. If you do a factory reset in TWRP, it will not wipe your user data (downloads, music, everything else in /data/media/0 or /sdcard). However, if you select Format Data, or you pick Internal Storage in the advanced wipe menu, all of your user data will be wiped. Usually, a factory reset is all you need after flashing roms, so you don't have to worry about losing photos/music/etc.
Great thanks for the fast reply. OK other phone was sgs3. Sometimes when flashing and then running new ROM it seemed the settings stayed the same as previous ROM. Devs would have you format data for clean install. How would that work on this droid turbo?
I also wiped data and it wiped my internal storage. I thought maybe I had wiped internal storage accidentally or did something else wrong but this leads me to believe I didn't do anything wrong. Back to the previous version that worked for us? (I think it was 2.8.7)
Edit: I just read that choosing to format data will also format internal storage, but a factory reset which "wipes data" does not touch the internal storage. This is a little confusing if you aren't familiar with how everything is partitioned. Is internal storage actually on the data partition?
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
If I have the ROM and gapps on internal SD and format data I loose ROM and gapps right? Then how would you install ROM? Second if I delete Android file on internal SD would that make it a clean install? But other files would still remain. Just trying to understand so I don't brick or can't get ROM on. Thanks

Yes, the internal storage is on the data partition. When you do a factory reset with TWRP and you read the script as it executes, it says something like "wiping /data without wiping /data/media." Doing the factory reset wipes everything on /data except /data/media, which is where your user data lives. So what gets wiped is all of the user apps and the data generated by the system apps, but your user data is preserved.
It makes sense that wiping data would wipe everything. I think having separate boxes for data and internal storage is to account for someone who might install an older version of android that is partitioned differently. I can't remember when the change happened, but at one point, the user data and app data were kept on separate partitions. I think that user data lived on /sdcard and apps lived on /data. That's why you see the /sdcard folder as a symlink when you go exploring with a root browser. It's symlinked to /data/media/0 to maintain backwards compatibility with older apps that are expecting /sdcard to exist.
Thanks st33v. My last phone had a /sdcard partition separate from /data so I think that is where the misperception came from. It also had /sdcard2, which was an actual SD card.

Yep my thinking too. You guys are great! Cleared it up.
If you wipe all your files simply use twrp and connect it to the PC. You can drag the files over for flashing.
