On stock rom is YouTube pixelated too. The latest YouTube version thinks our phone is a low-end device. Download an older version of YouTube app.
on stock rom for me its not pixelated
It is a known issue on custom ROMs for our phone.
Use alternate YT players, like "Viral" for ex. With them, you can play HD videos.
+1 for Viral, my go to Youtube app, it even has a floating player and interface modifications.. its just better than the stock Youtube app and the best one yet for me

Well actually it's not.
On stock rom you don't have pixelation on youtube videos, you just have a resolution limitation of 360 pixels (as on custom rom, it's a youtube app limit) but if you try to play the same video in CM10.2 or CM11 you'll have nasty jagged edges due to the fact that hw video acceleration is broken and you have no antialiasing.
On CM10.1 it works perfectly.
So using Viral it's some sort of work around because you have to stream a much heavier 720pixel video in order to avoid that pixelation problem that is still there but you can't notice it because of the higher resolution on a small screen.
That's the reason why I'm still on CM10.1, it's the only rom that works fine with video.
If someone is aware of any other rom higher than CM10.1 (android 4.2.2) that has video working properly please let me know.
Viral is pixelated too for me (tried on stock)
Other videos are fine, its just viral abd YouTube
EDIT: Had to disable Hardware Acceleration in Viral
have this prob on CM11(4.4.4) , is there any fix or if i download an older version of youtube or it still happens?

Like I said, try Viral (free lite version on Play Store, can get pro one way or the other) or some other alternate YT player.
It must work, I watched 720p with ease both on CM11 earlier and on CM 10.2 now.
I don't think that anything has been broken in the meantime.

I had the same problem with my HP SLate 8 pro on KitKat 4.4.2, I just solved the problem (at least with the video I'm currently watching) by using Viral Lite

No problemo for me
CM 7.2 Kang from temasek, kernel 2.6.32.49, No OC, Flash player 11, Dolphin Browser HD
I play the tegra demo video 1080p, hardware decode mode with MX video player.
The title of the thread is a bit confusing.
We talk about youtube videos in 720p. I can view 480p without lags, but 720p is like a fast diashow.
i can even play 1080p videos using mxplayer pro. cm7 latest temasek kang, stock cm7 kernel. you better try it.

Hello!
I can play 720p videos in the browser window (tested CM standard, Dolphin HD 7.3.0, Opera 11.50) - but switching to full screen only worked with cm standard browser - video was distorted with the other browsers.
...may be because of 32MB ramhack. I will test a 00 ramhack build from vodonka later...
For testing I used the Avenger Trailer HD.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiZE7hVnF-4
OC was @1.3Ghz
Flash: 11.1.112.60
ROM: CM7.2.0-RC0-KANG temaseks build P204-29
Kernel: ironkrnL32-20120106h1801
BB/RIL: 0823
BTW: Playing HD videos with moboplayer works also flawlessly - and yes output over HDMI is ok too...

Hello!
As I understand it he was referring to Flash video streams from You-tube in 720p played in the browser!!!
Given the right codec the hardware is of course absolutely playing vids up to 1080p - I had never glitches using external player like Moboplayer.
But the Point was 720p played in a Web-browser!
...that is arguably a little more demanding for the hardware since these interfaces produce a little more overhead.

Hello!
As I wrote I could play it in 720p in full screen in the standard CM7 web browser using your KANG (P204-29 it was) with ironkrnL - didn't test, but I am sure it will also play with standard kernel.
Full screen was distorted with Dolphin HD and Opera, but (as I wrote) I am not sure if it isn't related to the 32MB-ramhack of the ironkrnL - I will test this later... But it played well in Browser...
And of course 360/480p is usually more than absolutely enough on a mobile device, but he wants the video to look good on an full HD Big screen - as I understand it.
And as mentioned in your KANG-thread (a little OT there...), if the video is coded in codec not supported by the phones hardware i.e. coded with webm like the example from the KANG thread...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBrsM_WlfV8
...it won't work.
no issues using your link in web browser here, using Gueste2X_v2.2_Final_Kernel_SR1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20956639&postcount=188 with update here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21137862&postcount=287 with kernel giveMeRC6_only.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21147811&postcount=295
no OC only UV as shown in his giveMeRC6 post. really good rom for me. that trailer is smooth.
That trailer above game of thrones plays fine also.
Hello!
Now I tried it with vodonkas new KANG kernel build from yesterday and must say - impressive...
With or without ramhack - the HD Trailer from Avenger I linked will run without glitches in browser window and full screen at 720p.
Without the distortions - I had with ironknL!
CM 7.2 no problem in standart browser. opera in fullscreen is destorted.
No problem for me either.
CM7 KANG 33, standard browser.
My problem is that it plays for a while and then the screen freezes but the sound continues playing. And yes I am talking about youtube in browser.
Hello!
Standard question as always - are you using latest KANG?
Using a custom kernel will speed up things to...
As for me it works using latest KANG + latest ironkrnL 32MB ramhack @1.3Ghz.
...that is using Dolphin HD 7.3.0 or standard CM7 browser...
And yes it doesn't work with every 720p video - they must use a compatible meaning hardware supported codec...it is after all a phone an not a Quad core desktop computer an even on a desktop you are lost when the codec isn't properly supported....
And I need a good WiFi connection - didn't test this with 3G so far.
Works for Me.
WajkIUI + Vadonka's Kang kernel
It is lagging on my phone BTW my phone is not rooted.
Not sure if anyone has encountered this issue yet with the SGH-i957 or not but I noticed that Netflix and Skype both have a 2-4 second lag in video. I also noticed that Hulu Plus is not supported. YouTube works great!!! Would the lag be due to the Honeycomb 3.2 software? I know that there was a problem on some roms with lag on Netflix and Hulu app. There was video lag just on the desktop of this device until i downloaded ADW Launcher EX and then it was as smooth as butter. So I am guessing that this is software not hardware issue. This is with stock ROM no root or anything.
About the stock launcher, it is a common fact that it lags. Overall, I wouldn't be surprised if the video problem was related with the Samsung's ROM. Samsung's TouchWiz ROMs for Galaxy Tabs are well known for their poor performance. I have a custom ROM on my GT-7310 (which technically should be slower) and I get no lag even with 720p video.
---------- Post added at 07:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:37 AM ----------
Yes. Stock ROMs (for the Galaxy Tab) are well known for their poor performance. I have a custom ROM and get no lag.
I think the user RF12 had the same issue as you.
So will rooting and the new kernel fix this? Is this just on some devices and not all?

i am running stock kernel, no OC, and rooted, and i didnt see any lag.
if you are still experiencing it, there may be some build.prop tweaks that you could make to improve fps or multimedia performance.
I have the same problem with my i957 on Netflix, but only on certain shows. "Cheers" lags horribly by the middle of the show, but any HD content I watch plays just fine. So far, all HD content plays fine and some SD content lags. This leads me to believe it's the app that has a problem. What content lags for you? Try watching "The Office" and see if it lags. Maybe we can nail this down.
I haven't used Skype yet, but I'll give it a go.
(Stock)
Is that the British or American version of office?
I was thinking that the problem was with the app. I still need to try it in Dolphin or Firefox browser if I can. In Skype, the video of the person on the other end was just fine but down in the left hand corner where you can see yourself, everything I did was a few seconds behind. The lag was also there for the person on the other line too. It isn't the camera because the taking video looks just fine.
It may just be that the apps are not optimized for tablets, I dunno.
So U.K. The Office does work fine. That is only the second video I have tried, although the controls are not very responsive. The app definitely doesn't work as well as it does on the Skyrocket.
I wonder if we could get the APK for the phone version of Netflix, and if it would run on the 8.9? If so, that might settle whether the app or the device is at fault...
Good idea...anyone know how to make an apk from an app?
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
Well, it looks like it was a ported ICS wallpaper that was causing the Netflix lag issue. I just turned it off and the app ran much smoother, and was more responsive. I did notice that the video quality faded in and out sometimes, from crystal clear to almost blurred.
I also tried the NF website in Firefox to see if that was any better, however after selecting a video, it takes u to a page that says the site is only compatable with Windows, Apple, and Chrome OS.
Shouldn't there be a mobile Silverlight pluggin? It makes me wonder what the app uses to play video.

Moving to General
Hi.
At the moment I am using the Nova HD Plus ROM, which is a great ICS Kang, but I sadly cannot record a thing with it. Tomorrow I am going to a Sports event I would like to take some videos.
Is there something I should be aware when downgrading?
Also which ROM provides great quality videos. I used to use temasek`s KANG ROM and since he is back, I might use his ROMs again, but are there any ROMs with better video quality? Also, which kernel to use with?
Thanks in advance!
Dont think that you should worry about when changing rom. Except that you have to do a full wipe!
Go for Tamaseks KANG and Etana Kernel. Best performance and stability.

Due to the lack of media acceleration, video recording doesn't work yet on CM9. We just have to be patient.
Hi!
If you would rather not risk a downgrade you can download an app to record in standard definition. I don't recall the name of it though, but I'm sure you'll find it around here if you search for it.
And I think a full wipe is enough, not sure if a "backtoExt3" is necessary though.
EDIT: As you can see in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574098
the name of the app is Video Illusion
I like to watch movies on my tab, then and often stream them from my pc. I'm just wondering which rom you guys would choose as the best for this? I'm thinking of going back to the cm9, currently on 10.1.
I seem to remember having less issues when using cm9 to do this, though in general I didn't find the rom ass smooth. But many of them are 1080p and I'm not interested in reincoding anything.
And is mx player still one of the best options for this?

Honestly, I have no problems streaming and watching my 720p collection from my HTPC on my stock ROM (4.1.1). I am using MX, and even though it didn't request a codec, I still installed the ARM7-NEON codec. I have abosolutely no problems whatsoever. However, all my 720's are very efficiently compressed using my own settings with max bitrates not usually exceeding any more than 4,500kbps.
Sungsonic is supposed to be optimized for video and audio. But not sure if it is available / works on the P1000. I'm currently on a P3113.
I also had the same issue, I also love watching movies on my Tab, especially HD. I was on cm9 then shifted to cm10 parandroid. All of these custom ROMs have same issue with playing 720p and 1080p. The solution I still use is this:
1) delete all codecs and players, including MX player.
2) install bsplayer
3) then install mob player
4) then install MX player (don't install its codecs or the other players codecs)
5) go to MX player >>> settings>>> decoder>>> tick the hw+ decoder and at the bottom tick the deinterlace option
6) now try playing 720p or 1080p, in hw+ mode using MX player. If the player still lags you can use BS player, it handles HD quite well and slightly much better than MX player.
Hope this works for you. Please reply ASAP of the results...

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up doing a full restock last night, and gave it all a go in the gb again, and am now back on the cm9, and it's working much better. One movie I stream as my test was always a bit juttery on cm10 variants, and also on gb is very good on cm9. And of course mx player will select hw in cm9 where it won't in the others.
Sometimes you just have to trial and error. Actually, everything is running a bit smoother than any cm10 I've used.

It's a fact that 1080p is VERY BAD on JB aosp based roms even with hw support, when they are played absolutly nice on GB rom !
About JB 4.1.2 not able to play fluently 1080p as stock GB samy does, one of our rom daddy explained somewhere that Samsung have some kind of proprietary codecs bought somewhere that aosp cannot have. So...
But I just tried ICS AOKP SGT7 milestone 6 (19/9/2012) and it decode 1080p flawlessly ! no difference with stock GB !
So what happen to JB 4.1 or 4.2 ? :cyclops:
edit : got a look at the 1080p' movies link used to Test videos for HW codec with MX, for example at the [ROM][CM10][JB][4.1.2][SGT7][P1000/N/L][PDroid][20121127] thread when guys complained about bad performance, and I discover that theses "reference' movies" were in fact both 800 or 816p ! along with a fanny readme that states "Original Video properties: Resolution: 1080p (1920x816) FPS: 23.976 (NTSC)"
So I think that many dev' validation test could have been badly abused that way with something near 720p !
It could be nice that our "old" 1080p mkv could stay running and streaming over our tab ... in JellyBean kernels & roms ad hoc !
Please ...
Thx
Im using CM11 by Epirex latest build, and I still have problem with video quality on youtube stock app.
Have someone how to fix it?
On stock I dont have this problem, when I update to custom roms, I get this.
Do you get this when you play any video?
I only get 144 & 360p on cm11. I wonder if there is any fix to this. I only want at least 480p.
