[Q] 4.4.4 Update XT1052 - Moto X Q&A

Hey guys, I just received the notification about the above mentioned update being available for my phone. Who has experience with this update and can tell me, if I should update or not. I mean the phone is running quite good on 4.4.2 so why change a running machine? But on the other hand... We all like the new cool stuff, dont we? so whats better and whats worse after the update and how can i pull the file without root? So others can use it if they want to.
Thanks in advance and I hope the answer isnt mentioned here already, cause I couldnt find it within the last hour or so...

There is a thread in general regarding the 4.4.4 rollout. While it isn't necessary to update, the phone will keep nagging you to install the update unless you either accept it, or use root to disable update notifications.

What's better? Well it shows 4.4.4 under Android version number instead of 4.4.2
No seriously, the only change I have noticed are : A much brighter flash for taking photos. Maybe the daylight photos have changed too, I honestly have no idea, no real time to test that.
Since upgrading to 4.4.4 I now can connect my phone to my Bravia via Mircast, if that matters to you.
There is a new Dialler app, which is meaningless IMHO, still sucks big time.
And some security related updates have been made, about which I literally have no idea.
No, the phone does NOT run more smoothly than on 4.4.2, it's just same. If you are happy with 4.4.2 then there is no point.
By the way, no, without root you can't pull the OTA zip file from the phone.

Thanks for the answers. But shouldnt it be possible to adb pull the update? And where is it located and is it downloaded already or would i have to allow the update first?

All OTAs are located in /cache
AFAIK, you cannot access /cache (even with ADB pull) without being rooted. I could definitely be wrong about this, so you are welcome to try. Once in adb shell, try to 'cd' to /cache and get a directly listing with 'ls'. My guess is that you won't be able to without su privileges, but let me know if that is not the case.
Once you install the OTA, it is permanently erased from /cache, and it is gone forever. I'm not sure why you are interested in pulling it though -- all of the XT1052 OTAs have already been pulled and posted by others. You can find all this in the very link I posted in my first reply to you.
Good Luck!

[Q] I've tried and tried and researched galore.

All I would like to do is get my (not unlocked, but un-rooted) back to a stock recovery (I think?) and a stock OS. I want to be able to do updates OTA as they arrive on my phone, and the only reason I rooted in the first place was to get Gingerbread from CM7 and they didn't work. It got stuck in a endless boot loop and once I finally got a nightly working, it wasn't even worth it to me anymore.
I have used this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
and done hours and days of research to try and solve my problem and get me to where I would like to be. I'd like to think I am not a noob to Android but clearly I am and I can't achieve 100% of my goal.
Where I am currently: Stock image, not sure of recovery, unrooted, bootloader unlocked.
Where I would like to be: Stock everything (I know I cannot relock the bootloader) just like when I bought it, so I can patiently wait for Gingerbread to push OTA whenever Google solves the issues.
Thank you and I apologize.
That guide has pretty much all the information you need. Flashing the stock HTC images and stock recovery will enable you to get OTA updates.
Read my signature, find "Unroot/restore" guide, look for the part for unlocked bootloaders.
Clearly that did not work for me or I would not have posted my concern.
@Jack_R1 I will attempt this again, thanks.

You didn't explain where you got stuck, what you attempted, what went wrong and couldn't even state your recovery image. The guide you linked to is there for a reason, it works, however onlyif you follow it correctly without jumping in with 2 feet. If in future you require more precise help perhaps you should give precise information.
Perhaps the OP has encountered some of the issues i've posted about HERE?
Don't mean to kind of hi-jack this thread...
Don't mean to kind of hi-jack this thread but on the related topic of rooting the N1...is there some way to root it and still receive the OTA update for gingerbread(whenever it will come out)?
I did look through the threads and found nothing related unless it was further discussed on page x of 25, for example.
Also, are all wallpapers 960/980 by 800 for the N1 and other android phones? Is this so that when you scroll through screens you will still be able to see the image? That was the only possible answer I could think of.
Thanks in advance.

Yes and yes.
You can root using SuperOneClick and still recieve OTA updates. You only lose that ability once you've installed a custom recovery.
Thanks!

Having a custom recovery has NOTHING to do with your ROM's ability to receive OTA updates... it has to do with you ROM, not your recovery.
And, as mentioned, rooting or unlocking has no impact on you being able to receive OTA updates.

Uh, sorry, but NO. What he says in that post is incorrect.
I have been using a custom recovery since I first got my Nexus One, and I have received EVERY OTA update.
EDIT: But hey, don't take my word for it. Try it yourself.
efrant, for clarification, do the OTAs auto install, or do you have to manually flash them?

So, in my setup (which is a rooted-but-otherwise-stock ROM and Amon_RA's 1.9.0 recovery), I receive OTA updates, and they auto-install with no problem (as Amon_RA's 1.9 recovery does not verify signatures). Note, however, that every OTA update also does two things: 1) it removes the permissions on the su binary (which obviously disables root access), and 2) it copies two files (/system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh) back onto the system partition, which will flash the stock recovery back to your devices as soon as you reboot. You will need to root first (either manually or by flashing ChainsDD su update before you reboot, or use SOC), then delete the two files, then reflash the custom recovery you want.
This is true only for Amon_Ra's 1.9 and later recoveries that either don't verify signatures at all, or allow turning verification off.

Yes, you are correct for the installation part of the update. However, you can have any recovery whatsoever, and it will not impact you receiving OTA update notifications.

Of course you can still 'receive' OTA but what's the point if you can't install them? I'm pretty sure that everybody understands the distinction!

OTA ICS update

So out of sheer curiosity, I just got the text about the OTA update from ATT what happens if I did this. I currently have my phone rooted and ics that pirate dropped a while back.

You mess up your phone. Return to stock GB, it is in the dev. Section. You also will have to relock bootloader. I bet you know this already but just want to keep you from messing up your phone.

You'll need to relock your bootloader if you want to run the update.
Yeah, I got it too. Probably just the OFFICIAL ics roll out that made it our way.. I doubt there's much difference.. oh, and we'd lose our roots. I'm not going to update it.
Yeah I kind of already knew that was the case but wanted some other opinions... Any one use the RUU that ghost put out have any problems... Sometimes my audio gets buggy, like doesn't play sound then reset phone and all good... Doubt the two are connected but just curious
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I also just received the text from AT&T informing me of the important update.
My boot loader is re-locked, phone is un-rooted and I used the latest ICS RUU to update the phone.
My question is now or later (assuming I stay locked and on the current ROM) if I happen to select the check for updates option on the phone will I screw anything up?
Does this OTA method give you the option to save the downloaded file but not do the upgrade?

Yes, it will download and let you save for later. You won't screw anything up. However, since you are already on the latest ics you don't need the update.

I agree that I dont need it but AT&T will probably have my phone flagged as not having received the update. I wanted to make sure that say in 6 months time while playing with the phone I forget and try the update option that I dont screw anything up.
I imagine though that before then I will re-lock, root and download one of the custom ROM's in which case I need to make sure that I dont accidentally choose the OTA update!!
got it today too but i am using wildchilds rom went ahead and went to software update clicked check for update and it said software up to date

Go to that website. To see the vivid forums you will have to register. After you register you will be able to see the different roms he has which includes generic, if you want to tether. I am on the att version, just like stock without the bloat. Also it comes with his wcx recovery. It is already rooted as well so no worries there. He also has videos that show every step in installing his recovery plus rom. It is also "over clocked" at 1.5 instead of the 1.2 the factory sends out.
Hope this helps out!

It's really not truly over clocked, it is the natural clocking for the phone. My battery life has improved by about an hour since I went to this rom. I was on stock ics before switching to this. I usually use it 12-14 hours a day with at least 30 left at the end of the day. I listen to an hour of pandora, spend at least a couple of hours on xda, usa today, and sync 3 emails accounts. The biggest battery waster for me and I would get a few more hours if not for it is the screen brightness. If I would turn off auto brightness and dim it, I would have a couple of days worth of battery life.

[WIP][*POSSIBLE SOLUTION*] Restoring Missing Apps Post Unlock: Your Help is Needed

As reported by Modaco, it seems that unlocking the bootloader removes some system apps, among them are the Calculator, Flashlight, Ringtone Trimmer and Sound Recorder (and I've seen a report that the Teeter game is gone too).
Now, I haven't got my own One yet, however I do have access to a Canadian variant from work and we've got another one in America running an older build.
It was running 1.27, now it is running 1.28.
I cannot access the data partition, obviously, not even for read (it is not rooted), however using the pm command I managed to discover which packages are located in the preload directory (excluding the carrier specific apps from my variant):
com.android.calculator2
com.htc.flashlight
com.htc.pdfviewer
com.htc.ringtonetrimmer
com.htc.soundrecorder
Initially I thought ODEX files might be needed, but these are located in the data partition and as far as I know there are no ODEX files there (correct me if I'm wrong).
Using Carbon I've backed them up (see attached here), only thing left is to check whether they can be restored and work properly on unlocked Ones. It might not fit every variant, testing required. Perhaps it might even allow using OTA updates.
If you haven't unlocked your bootloader yet, I suggest trying this beforehand instead of the attached files:
Through ADB, use:
adb shell pm list packages -f | find "preload"
Backup these apps using Carbon.
Unlock bootloader.
Restore using Carbon.
Please let me know if this works.
Thank you so much. Flashlight and calculator is working. The Sound Recorder gives me a force close. But it is a beginning. :cyclops:

If you keep getting a force close then pmease try settings-application manager-sound recorder-clear data.
This should help clear up any force closures.
Also fixing permissions will help but quicker to just go through settings

I cannot access the data partition, obviously, not even for read (it is not rooted), however I did spot some of the missing apps in the system partition. I think that if we pull these files from a locked One and push them after unlocking we might not have to rely on flashing a custom rom to get them back.
Edit: or not... I've seen the Camera and have mistaken it for the Calculator... Idiot...
However, and here's the catch, I'm not sure the files remain unaltered between builds. So, here's the to do list:
Identifying the exact list of missing files post-unlocking - there'd probably be odex files missing as well as APKs, which is why we can't just pull these from a custom rom.
Pulling them from locked Ones (assuming they are in the system partition).
Comparing MD5 changes between different builds.
Testing testing testing.
Update: Stupid... this could be even simpler. These are in the data partition, and ES File Explorer can backup the APKs. I'm grabbing them now. We'll still need to figure out how to get the odex files back.
Update 2: OK, I've got 3/4 of the missing apps, the trimmer could not be backed up (attached them). Will have to continue with it tomorrow.
Maybe this tool can help us:

Well, I have current an HTC Sensation, and up until the first ICS update I was stock and rooted, getting OTAs as usual.
Sure, I had to keep a backup of the original recovery and flash it through hboot each time before installing an OTA, however they did work.
I'm not planning on flashing a recovery this time around, I plan on just booting it to install Koush's Superuser and keep the stock one. And if it wouldn't work, just to root and go back to the stock recovery. Until I've had enough of stock :silly:

Generally updates are anticipated and usually a stock version will be posted soon after the ota. Actually the fact that you can't receive an ota after unlocking will save a lot of noobs from installing a new locked down bootloader.
OTAs can easily be pulled from your cache. Someone would pull it and upload it.

I know, I'm not trying to say that it would be there thing to do or the right thing to do, I am only saying in general.
But yes, that is how you pull an OTA, and it definitely is helpful to not accidentally (or purposely) unroot your phone.

The thread you referring to is exclusively for 720T so I asked the question there first but since no one responded I searched and I thought It would be useful to let know the others on the thread!!
If the information about 4.4.2 update thread is already there provide the link.
Before posting I searched and wasn't able to find any OTA info.
So remove threads and pardon my ignorance but my intent was to help!!!
I really do think it is about time to add a SPH-L720T section, it is already quite difficult to find post about this phone, they are mixed in with the standard SPH-720.
Anyone agree?
I wouldn't mind a subform.....It is hard, but a little reading and searching will get you to where you need.
NC6 On a custom recovery.
Does anyone know how to apply this update using a custom recovery?

You can't. have to be unrooted to apply the update.

I believe you can be rooted, but you have to run the stock recovery

To clarify his post. You can be rooted but you have to be running pure stock with no mods of any kind. No deleted system apps and also be running stock recovery.
Awesome "Samsung Experience"
I hadn't noticed until last night that since I got this (NC6) update on my phone, that several things were screwed up. Namely, the Hotspot Toggle was gone from the "Connections" settings tab, Sprint Zone was replaced by something called Mobile Zone that always errored out when you tried to open it. And lastly, the Tethering and Roaming settings were completely missing - as in gone, as in not there. After much frustration I tried a factory reset, but to no avail. Nothing changed. Same problems. On a whim, I decided to see what the guys at the Samsung Experience at Best Buy could do for me. I was pleasantly surprised to be helped by a sharp, knowledgeable guy who really knew his stuff. He was a fellow geek and was familiar with XDA and all the ins and outs of Samsung/Android phones. He did not have the NC6 version available to flash, but he did have NAF (KitKat update). So he flashed NAF to my phone with Samsung's SMART firmware tool (a glorified Kies that I would love to have access to!). And unlike going to the Sprint store, I didn't have to wait 30 minutes to be helped and my phone didn't disappear to the back room for another 30 minutes to be abused and mishandled by an overworked and probably under-trained and underpaid sprint employee. I stood right there beside the guy at his laptop while he showed me the software and flashing process. Totally awesome!
This fixed all the above issues plus another interesting thing too. Some of you are probably familiar with a little quirk in the S4 (and S3 too) in the stock recovery - when you reboot, it would show "Error!" under the little android robot. This always bugged me because I knew it shouldn't do that. Well my newly flashed S4 no longer says "Error!" when you reboot from recovery. I have no idea why it did it before or what changed to make it go away, but I feel better now that it's gone. It's probably major placebo effect but my phone seems snappier and smoother than ever.
So to make a long story short, "Samsung Experience" is totally awesome compared to going to the Sprint store. I will be going back when they get the NC6 (and possibly every future update as well) to have it flashed properly to my phone. I know I probably could have done the same thing myself with Odin and the firmware packages from Sammobile.com, but having them do it makes them responsible if anything goes wrong. And since I'm still under warranty, I don't want to do anything to void my warranty.
Amazing when things actually work the way they're supposed to...
Upon further investigation, it looks like I actually can re-initialize my phone using Kies now. I had tried doing it before going to the Samsung place at Best Buy, but when I tried the "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization", it said is was unsupported or something to that effect. That was because I already had NC6 on my phone, which wasn't available in Kies yet - just like even the Samsung guys didn't have it yet. But now that I have NAF, when I try "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization" it does give me the option to actually do it. The message says it will delete all user data and write the current software to the device - which is what I think they did for me at Best Buy. Only Kies couldn't load NAF for me while I had NC6 on my phone. So once NC6 makes it to Kies (if it ever does) I should be able to do a pristine flash using Kies instead of going to Best Buy if my phone starts acting up again.
You guys probably know all of this already, but I'm still learning...

So You can flash NAF over NC6 Is that what you're saying or I misunderstood?

No, you CAN'T. That was my original problem. Kies still thinks NAF is the latest version so it can't do anything with NC6 - it doesn't recognize it as the latest verstion - in fact it doesn't know NC6 exists at all. It will only initialize with what it thinks is the latest version. But since I have NAF now, Kies can do the full initialization with NAF. Like if I ever hosed my phone while it had NAF, I could fix it by doing a clean flash of NAF with Kies. And eventually I would think NC6 would become available in Kies. Then you should be able to do a clean flash of NC6 using Kies too.

No I didn't. I thought about it, and it probably would have worked, but everything I read said that would trip the Knox warranty flag. However now that I see the Samsung guy was able to do it - and it DIDN'T trip the Knox flag - I checked afterwards. And I even asked him if it would before he flashed my phone. So assuming the Samsung SMART firmware tool uses Odin at it's core, maybe I could have done it myself and not tripped the Knox flag. Or maybe the Samsung software has something that Odin doesn't that keeps it from tripping Knox. I just didn't want to use my phone as a guinea pig to prove or disprove whether or not downgrading firmware would trip Knox. Again, everything I read indicated that even flashing official Knox-enabled firmware that was a lower version than what was currently on the device would trip Knox.
My phone has downloaded this update automatically, and when it boots into stock recovery gives me an Error and aborted message. I'm assuming that's because I am stock rooted. So, can I download the zip and flash it myself through recovery? I honestly don't recall what recovery I'm running. It's been a couple months, and as a recovering flashaholic, I haven't gone beyond stock. I only wanted root to get rid of the bloat.

You have to completely be unmodified. I think root has not stopped it, but you'll likely lose it afterwards. If you stripped the Rom, themed, or installed a custom recovery, you have to revert back to stock.

i believe you can re-root once you take the update.
Mine has yet to get the update. Anyone have the NC6 zip up?

not really a noob, but still confused anyway... need a little help from my friends...

Project Fi Nexus 6 rooted here on 5.1.1 LVY48E
I keep getting a notice that a system update has been downloaded (29.1) megs..a tad annoying
Would like to run the update, but can't because of TWRP... Also would like to try 6.0 if it is out, just don't want to lose root, and or have to have my phone reset...
I have Wug's nexus root toolkit too
How do I update to the latest L and or/ M???
Looking for some friendly advice....
Thanks!
Forgot to mention that I have tried flashing the update manually to no avail..

You can't update your rooted phone with Ota update, only way is to flash the factory image, download latest Nexus 6 factory image from Google and flash it with the tool kit, if you don't know how to flash a factory image, you should see the main thread
And I believe , given the need for a modified boot when rooting Marshmallow, you lose the OTA anyway, no?

Thanks for the help! Been using the toolkit to try and flash stock + unroot...
It doesn't seem to be working for me... First tried to update to last version of lollipop.. runs the batch updater after downloading the factory image and extracting.. batch window closes after awhile I wait after no change to phone or toolkit and nothing has changed on phone... tried this with marshmallow too... same thing....
At a loss..

Just do it manually using fastboot. Or since you have TWRP, find a pre-rooted rom.zip you can flash from there.
Lately half the threads are about a toolkit not working. There should be a sticky about this: Don't use toolkits on Nexus phones! Those who don't feel secure enough to enter three lines in a command line/terminal really shouldn't use toolkits either. It gives a feeling of false security for a price of being totally at loss if anything goes wrong. And things do go wrong.

We try to advise people not to use rootkits or kits of any kind. It does nothing but hinder their efforts if something goes wrong. In the end it is people being lazy and then bricks happen and they have no idea what to do.

I think many of us here agree with that. To avoid bashing, we have to say "use them if you like, but learn to use fastboot manually first". But all the work we collectively put in to that as a majority is easily undone when just one person replies "use a toolkit". It almost always ends up in a debate that is so long that when it reaches it's conclusion, the OP ended up using a toolkit anyway.,

I know. All we can do is advise and the lazy will still be lazy and then end up with issues. This is why you will see people post about issues and then the min they mention they have used a root kit all replies stop. There are many of us that refuse to help people that have used a root kit. It shows they should not be messing around with their devices if they dont have the time to learn to do things properly.
Duly noted -
But seriously, thanks for the info.. will be figuring this out!
Best all

Update-
Sincere thanks to all that replied.. Did not know that the toolkit's were a nono-
I did use the command line to manually update and all is well. I am on LVY48I now and rooted.. Next is to reinstall the latest xposed for 5.1.1.
Also, tried finding a stock pre-rooted marshmallow, but didn't really have any luck with that... any pointers or links?
TIA

Not 100% sure of this but I believe that Marshmallow will not achieve root without some modification. At least I couldn't
