twrp versions after 2.6.3.1 weren't working for me on my moto x. Tried 2.7.1.1 and 2.8.1.0. Both just skipped recovery completely and booted android. I had to stick with 2.6.3.1 and now I'm running smooth on 4.4.4 (official unlocked and rooted)

If you don't go straight to recovery after flashing the recovery it won't stick.

Correct. But that is irrelevant. Those 2 versions of recovery wouldn't load at all. I would flash, then immediately choose recovery.. and it would reboot the phone but go straight into android. It wasn't until I flashed 2.6.3.1 and chose recovery that it actually loaded twrp.

I am sorry, nothing personal but I would have to say it is in some way a user error. I have flashed every version of TWRP as they were released. I have had success with PC or flashify or recovery tool app. I just updated to 2.8.1.0 just the other day. Hope you don't take this post as a insult. Just trying to help you troubleshoot your issue.

So you did the following...
mfastboot flash recovery twrp.img
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
Then select to go into recovery?
I ask because the way you wrote it, it appears you skipped rebooting to bootloader which is needed.

Not sure how you could have inferred that from the way I typed it. The fact that i got it to work with 2.6.3.1 shows that i do, at the very least, know how to get it to work, which implies that I understand the steps like booting to recovery immediately after flashing. Nevertheless, here are my steps...
(note the img filename isn't exact because I'm not in front of my pc)
1. Used the MotoXtoolkit to flash the recovery that comes with the toolkit which is 2.7.1.1.
2. It calls mfastboot flash recovery twrp2711.img
3. It shows that it sends ok and writes ok
4. From my phone, currently on the hboot menu, i vol-down to "recovery" and vol up to select.
5. it reboots, showing the unlocked disclaimer. From here I expect it to show TEAMWIN but instead it shows the moto x boot up animation
I try again, this time downloading 2.8.1.0 and instead of using the MotoXToolkit menu, I just drop the opentwrp.2810.img file right into the same folder as mfastboot.
I boot into hboot and type
mfastboot.exe flash recovery opentwrp2810.img
It writes successfully
I then vol down to choose "Recovery" and vol up to select. Same issue. It boots to android, not recovery.
Finally I get the 2.6.3.1. version and used "fastboot" instead of "mfastboot" and it works as expected.
So not sure if it doesn't like mfastboot or the images. I've not tried since I got 2.6.3.1 working

Please re-read what I asked as you clearly don't understand my question.. as I did NOT say " booting to recovery immediately after flashing" I said rebooting to bootloader immediately after flashing recovery, before you try to go into recovery.
Let me ask it again, this time by copying the steps YOU typed that you used, and add one statement that I am asking about...
1. Used the MotoXtoolkit to flash the recovery that comes with the toolkit which is 2.7.1.1.
2. It calls mfastboot flash recovery twrp2711.img
3. It shows that it sends ok and writes ok
3A. mfastboot reboot-bootloader
4. From my phone, currently on the hboot menu, i vol-down to "recovery" and vol up to select.
5. it reboots, showing the unlocked disclaimer. From here I expect it to show TEAMWIN but instead it shows the moto x boot up animation
Or these steps...
I boot into hboot and type
mfastboot.exe flash recovery opentwrp2810.img
It writes successfully
mfastboot reboot-bootloader
I then vol down to choose "Recovery" and vol up to select. Same issue. It boots to android, not recovery.
I added the Bold/Red mfastboot statement. That is what I'm asking if you do or not.
Why? Because I've seen more often than not, rebooting to bootloader (the mfasboot reboot-bootloader command is the most common way) IS NEEDED after flashing the recovery, but before trying to enter the recovery you just flashed, otherwise the recovery doesn't "stick."
And as I see you talk about HBOOT, it would appear you've got an HTC backgroud, and things work a little differently on Moto.

I've not done that. I've never had to.. unless 2.7.1.1 requires it and 2.6.3.1 doesn't. But the motox toolkit doesn't do it either. It flashes recovery and stops. It doesn't offer the option to reboot bootloader. And most guides online say
1. boot into hboot
2. Flash twrp
3. immediately vol-down to "recovery" in the hboot menu WITHOUT rebooting
I would assume that doing reboot-bootloader is effectively the same as not rebooting at all.
But even when I flashed 2.6.3.1, I simply hit vol-down and selected recovery without doing the reboot bootloader command and it worked.
But I'll try it your way with 2.8.1.0
Thanks!
Ditch the toolkit and do it manually. That could very well be the issue right there. ?

On Moto its FASTBOOT menu, not HBOOT... HTC its HBOOT.
Its pointed out in the OP of -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/step-step-instructions-unlocking-t2649738 as well as several posts in that thread. It may not always be needed, but it often is, and has worked when people said their recovery didn't stick. And that is why Is suggest it.
I do have to with my X, ever since I first installed TWRP. My old HTC's (Incredible, Thunderbolt), I don't recall if I had to reboot or not.
I restarts the phone in bootloader mode. so its not the same as just scrolling down and picking recovery.
To be honest, I don't use the tool kit, I do it manually with mfastboot for everything whenever possible.
Good luck, and let us know if it works.

I unlocked the bootloader on my HTC One and successfully flashed CWM recovery; however, when I try to boot into recovery the HTC splash screen comes up with "Entering Recovery" for a few seconds (as it should), then the screen goes black for a second and it boots into the ROM like normal without going into Recovery.
I've seen that the general fix for this is to clear the dalvik-cache, but I can't do that without root permission, and I can't install the superuser to get root without being able to boot into the Recovery.
I have developer options enabled with USB Debugging, Fastboot is turned OFF.
I have flashed to plain CWM, touch CWM, and TWRP, all with the same results.
fastboot erase cache had no effect

I am using the "fastboot flash recovery" command on Windows 7 64-bit (I have also tried on 32-bit).
You were right about the recovery file, I was using openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7.img, not m7wls. So for anyone who finds this thread later make sure it's the right recovery file for your build and carrier (not just phone model).
Hello.
I was in the process of upgrading my HTC One from 4.2 and successfully unlocked the bootloader. But thereafter my phone just constantly reboots. It shows the HTC splash screen for about 10 seconds and the reboots again.
I am able to go into the fastboot screen (see screen shot). But when I select Recovery, the phone gors to the next screen - displays "Entering Recovery" - and nothing else happens thereafter.
Can anyone please help? Have looked at other such questions and tried but nothing has helped.
Thanks

I'm not sure you did ever flash a custom recovery!
1. Put your phone in fastboot from the bootloader meny. You already did this while rooting, so you got it already!
2. In your "SDK-tools" folder that you used while unlocking the device, put [nameofyourrecovery].img I recommend you to install TWRP 2.6.3.3, as it is the best one for flashing kitkat and lets you do this if you wish I cannot give you a link as I am a new member, but search google for TWRP 2.6.3.3 and you will find it. Make sure it is .img and not .zip!
3. While in fastboot, open a command prompt in the ADB folder.
4. To flash your custom recovery, type
fastboot flash recovery [nameofyourrecovery].img

You have an M7CDWG, twrp is for M7_U & M7_UL models, if i'm not mistaken. Start googling for M7CDWG, it's a completely different phone than the U / UL phones.
and you need to "fastboot erase cache" after flashing recovery

Can you please suggest what next to instal?
If I reboot I still go into reboot loop, but can now reach TWRP manager.

Not really, don't know much about your model. You'll need to find a ROM compatible with your device; if it doesnt specifically say it's for your device, then most likely it isn't!!
I think there's a Maximus HD ROM for your version, but i have no idea where.
Did you..
Aside from flashing a recovery and rooting your phone, did you make any other modifications or flash any other partitions?
If no, then wipe Dalvek cache from TWRP. Boot into TWRP and select Wipe. Select advanced. Select Dalvek and Cache. Wipe power down. then power on and see if it will boot.

i had a similar problem last week with a One, a friend bricked his One by flashing "???" Dont know exactly whar he has done.
The phone had boot loops all the time.
my solution was:
- connecting the phone with the usb cable to my pc.
- started the phone into fastboot usb mode
- started cmd at my notebook
- change to the directory which contains adb and fastboot
- execute: fastboot erase cache
- restarted the phone
the phone starts normally into ARHD 40.3
perhaps it works ...
Not really sure what I'm doing wrong. Last rooted phone was a Nexus 5, and that was of course painless to root and flash ROMs to...
I'm using a Verizon XT1096 with 5.1 on T-Mobile.
So I was able to get the bootloader unlocked via Motorola's website, now that Verizon is allowing them to do so. No problems there. My problem now is that I can flash a recovery, but if it reboots, the recovery is gone. And I can't get any recoveries to flash anything. I can't push an apk, root zip, or even a ROM. Says Installation Aborted, with no other error codes. Even tried CWM and disabling Signature Checking, which gives me more info, saying that the footer is mismatched. Phone does say the bootloader is unlocked though so that shouldn't be it...
Honestly, I'd just like to get it on CM12 until I can get a Nexus 6P.. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Or is there just no way to root yet? I figured even the XT1095 CF-Auto-Root method would work for 5.1, but no dice..
Not sure what to do here. Please move my thread if need be. Don't post here much...
I followed the instructions on the TWRP website (link below) and it worked flawlessly. One thing you have to do is, after running the "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" command, make sure to manually scroll on the phone and reboot into recovery. Hope that helps...
https://twrp.me/devices/motorolamotox2014.html
There is a partition mismatch. So do this. Download supersu and place it in the phones memory. Boot to fastboot mode and then fastboot boot recovery.img rather than fastboot flash recovery.img. You will boot to twrp, install SuperSU then download twrp from the playstore and install thru the app. It works, that's how I did it. Also when booting to recovery from the fastboot menu choose recovery with the vol up key rather than power button.

I thought I tried that but maybe not. I've read that some stock ROMs can and will overwrite the recovery upon booting, but I could be wrong. I'll look at that when I get home tonight.

Thank you, I'll try this tonight when I get home. This may solve it. I think I remember the bootloader spitting something out about a partition mismatch.. Will report back as soon as I try it.
So I went ahead and tried both your guys' methods.
Oraixearl, I figured your solution would work, but it actually didn't, to my surprise. It returned no results, as the root zip didn't end up doing anything.
RepeatUntilTheEnd's solution worked here. I guess I didn't try rebooting the phone after flashing the recovery, before going into it..
So here's what I did.
1.) Boot into bootloader
2.) Fastboot flash recovery [recovery.img]
3.) adb reboot bootloader
4.) Used keys on phone to go into recovery,
5.) Flashed root.zip
6.) Booted into OS, and ran root checker. Worked.
7.) To my surprise, TWRP stuck around, too.
Thank you guys!

That link doesn't really solve the OP's issue. I have the same issue. BUT - your link did show me that I can BOOT the .img file, I can't flash the .img file. I've verified the bootloader is unlocked by the fastboot getvar command.
I'm not sure what to do next. Installing OpenGapps causes a boot loop and the only thing I can do at this point is a factory reset with the OEM recovery since in the boot loop adb is unresponsive.

The instruction shows how to flash recovery.img with TWRP though I have no clue how to do it.
I got that error the first time I did it, it was because of a misspelling of the command.
If you already unlocked the bootloader, while in fastboot, you only type "fastboot boot" + "path to twrp img on computer" OR instead of typing out the path, you may drag and drop the file into the command window.
Once it boots to twrp, flash twrp from within the booted img. That ensures you have permanent twrp.
If you were able to unlock your bootloader, the only thing stopping you from loading twrp is improper spelling and path to the img. Almost every error I have seen is from not following the directions.

OK, just so I understand correctly, the proper sequence of events is to use fastboot to boot TWRP (which I can do) then, once in TWRP, I can then flash the twrp .zip file, right? Does anyone know if the LG's bootloader overwrites the recovery partition upon boot (in other words, do I have to boot straight to recovery after I flash to ensure it sticks?)
Sorry for the obtuse questions, I've got a lot of experience with Samsung flashing back in the KK and LP days, but not MM.
Thanks in advance!!

So you have flashed 20i which overwrites twrp with the stock recovery.
You then go through the steps for unlocking the boot loader.
After the boot loader is unlocked, you may boot into twrp with the fastboot boot command.
When that boots into twrp, flash twrp from within that to have it stick.
Have a question and maybe someone can help. Me getting carried away installed twrp from external partition. Now i cannot boot into recovery. Tried flashing using flashify and twrp manager. but flashify does not install after reboot and there is no option for h811 in twrp manager. Anyway to fix this?

Yes, that's exactly the steps I do. I've flashed 20i. I used fastboot to boot into twrp. I then "install" the twrp zip file. Says it flashes with no issues. I then reboot the phone. Still has stock recovery.
I've confirmed my bootloader is unlocked with the fastboot getvar all. I've also tried all three versions of twrp available (.1, .2 and .3) and still doesn't work. Yet twrp works fine if I boot it.

How did you confirm you have stock recovery? Did you use adb reboot recovery? Or did you use hardware keys to boot to it? Because if you use hardware keys you still get the initial confirm factory reset. You just have to accept then it boots to twrp.

Have a question and maybe someone can help. Me getting carried away installed twrp from external partition. Now i cannot boot into recovery. Tried flashing using flashify and twrp manager. but flashify does not install after reboot and there is no option for h811 in twrp manager. Anyway to fix this?

If boot loader is unlocked you should load twrp from fastboot.

Hahaha now that's funny!! I bet I've been through 50 blog posts on various sites to try to figure this out. Having successfully installed Viper I didn't want to take the chance and pass that confirm wipe factory question.
I feel like a complete tool. Seriously, thank you for taking the time to respond to me!

I'm glad it all worked out! :good:
finding I have to re-flash with flashify each time
using twrp-2.8.7.1, I get only the first reboot from there with hardware keys letting me into twrp after accepting the first factory reset prompt and denying the second. After that cant do it again unless I re-flash. Same thing happens if I flash it from within twrp. Can use terminal, su, boot recovery and I am in., or ADB/fatsboot Primarily worried about a soft brick condition. H-811, v1 20i stock, unlocked bootloader and rooted. DE-bloated,
Any Ideas, Thanks

You drop the twrp file
In fastboot folder open command prompt and flash twrp first just rename it simply to recovery.img while in the fastboot folder
Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Or just fastboot flash recovery.img
Then it should boot you into twrp
Once booting into twrp flash the supersu zip in your internal sd
Once you have root and reboot all you have to do is use flashify app and download twrp from the app and flash it Twrp sticks from there.

Hey Guys,
I just decided to install Twrp 3.0.2-2 and root my XT1092,
I have been facing issue right after flashing twrp, i select Recovery option in bootloader. Which just shuts down my phone.
After that i try to access recovery by booting into fastboot mode which again gives me a shutdown.
Later i discovered i could access stock recovery when my device is booted into the official mm rom. "adb reboot recovery"
Please help me guys. I tried fxz'ing and retrying the whole process. with different methods to no avail.
i even tried just rooting by only booting recovery "fastboot boot recovery.img" which again gives me a blank screen.
Any help would be really appreciated.

So you put the phone in bootloader mode:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-2-victara.img
Then you use only the volume rocker to select recovery (not the power button).
If the phone boots into stock Android, TWRP will be overwritten with stock recovery (which is useless), in which case you'll have to repeat the above.
same issue
on Verizon. Bootloader unlocked with code from Moto. Trying to use Windroid to finish up twrp install and root. I got a message in bootloader about mismatched partition size. tried ADB commands and said it installed. still won't work. no idea what to do next. was thinking of relocking and starting over but I would rather not. any suggestions? Thanks!
I have tried that as well. Used the volume rocker buttons to select recovery. I end up with a blank screen.
Tried fastboot flash recovery.img and I even tried mfastboot flash recovery as well.
Device just doesn't go to recovery after flashed through fastboot and selecting recovery.

Is your bootloader unlocked? Maybe you should try reflashing the full stock firmware, and trying again.

Thanks a lot mate,
I had gone back to stock again. Finished with the recovery process.
I have been using the power button to select the highlighted option :silly: my bad.
Thanks for stressing that out.
