Totally forgot it was in my pocket and waded into the sea to get onto a boat. :silly: :crying:
I dried it out the best i could (packed it in rice). It turned on the next day and seemed to be working but quickly came up with the power off options (restart phone, kid mode, etc) and turned off by itself. After another 2 days of being in a bag of rice, either the back and home buttons flash every 20 secs without the screen turning on or the screen turns on like it's attempting to start but turns off again - like an endless reboot cycle. The back of the phone gets seriously hot after a while too.
Sadly, the vast majority of our holiday memories are on it and am wondering if there is any way these can be recovered? I'm assuming it's not (even by HTC).
If it's not, what's the cheaper option? Sending it to HTC in the hope that it can be repaired or replaced...or just buying a new one?
put your oven on 50 degrees censius, and let it there for a few hours.
It often works on hardware like motherboards and such.

Wow that's a suggestion I haven't heard before! Is that to dry it out? Because if so, I think it's already fully dry.

Rice and a dry room. Dont know if it will work with a device with a fixed battery
Was it salt water? Fresh water is not so bad and you might be able to dry it out, but salt water is deadly to electronics (corrosion).

Well ive certainly never been in any sea that is fresh water!
Soak the device in isopropyl alcohol for a couple of hours to displace any water and to dilute any salt remaining in the device.
Leave the device out of the IPA for a day or two in a warm room then place the device in an electric oven at as low a temperature as possible overnight.
If that doesn't fix it it's broken beyond repair.
Or just claim on your insurance.

See my comment about the rice. Not sure if keeping it in rice for more than 2 days is going to make any more difference??

Could give that a try I suppose. What is "IPA"?
And unfortunately, although my home contents insurance covers my phone, it doesn't cover any "liquid" damage. So claiming is not possible.

Not really insurance unless it's all risks, is it?
USA Today have an article (here) where the reviewer was testing the S4 Active. Right after he dunk the phone underwater, the phone have WATER DAMAGE:
Shortly after I took the phone for a dip (in not very deep water), the display went kaput — at least for several hours. It lit up just long enough to indicate that I had power, but I couldn't actually keep the display on and use it.
Roughly a day later, the screen came alive again, but the phone was still exhibiting finicky behavior, presumably because of water damage. The touch-screen was messed up and the device acted as if headphones were plugged in when they weren't. If this were my actual phone, I'd return to the store for a replacement.
I just got the S4 Active and thought I am not planning to take the phone for a long underwater activities, I am concerned that I am getting a phone that have a very weak water resistant feature.
Not sure if this is because the reviewer didn't "properly" close the battery cover / USB port, but I have seen S4 Active review and Samsung Event videos where the phone was submerged in water for a long time and it still works.
PS: Have ANYONE tried to dunk their phone in the water for testing?
My phone has been in a pool, lake, bathtub, rainy weather, all since I got it. I trust it.

I'd like to think that reviewer just got stuck with a bad unit.
But this begs the question: Is water damage covered under warranty? Either by AT&T or Samsung? Surely they should back up their "vacation-proof" phone..

My first one went into the pool just fine. The unit I have now I am scared to expose it. On the top between the glass and bezel there is a small gap... above the in call speaker.... I'm afraid that water will pour in through that... Can you look at yours and see if yours is like that?
He probably didn't press down the back cover correctly.

You mean between the earpiece and the bezel at the front? I don't see any gaps, at least not with my naked eyes.
On the back, bottom part near the speaker, I don't see it either. Trying to press to see if there is a gap, so far none.
What makes you "scared" on the phone that you have now?

There is a sticker on the back cover that provide a warning for the user to PRESS DOWN on the middle of the cover, underneath the LED.
I always do that, but I never hear a "click" or any indication that the back cover is now PROPERLY covering the phone to prevent water leakage.
Well, I DO hear the click when pressing on all sides, but that's normal like my Galaxy Note.

I've used this phone below the 1 meter mark and the only bad side effect I get is the microphone not working well for a bit afterwords, which happens really at any level of exposure. This phone is pretty safe in water if you use it correctly.

That is pretty bad. I mean, I am not going snorkeling and take a phone call while floating on the shore, but if somebody calls me and I CANNOT talk to them because the microphone does not work, that is a big problem.
I am actually wondering how does the phone protects the microphone, earphone and speaker? There are holes there and water can go in. I was considering the Xperia Z and so far the only problem with water issue is the microphone jack - the phone will think that the jack have a headphone but it's only water. However, that is easily fixable by drying it out. I.e. use tissue or something that goes inside the jack.
Microphone though, the holes are to tiny to "dry" with a tissue or something.
BTW, is the microphone STOPS working completely or it works again after a FEW DAYS?
Maybe I can ask those who read this thread to tell me if:
A). You HAVE tested your phone under water (splashing it, dunking it in a bowl of water)
B). What ISSUE you have after you did the above? Phone dead, microphone stops working, etc.
I am trying to get a sense if this is just a specific batch issue (I can replace the phone) or design issue (no matter what, the issue still exists).
If it really was then it would have lifetime warranty. The fact that it only has 1 year warranty like most of the phones tells me that after year 1 be ready to say bye bye to your baby

Decided to take mine in the shower to test after it got here.
I let the showerhead spray onto the phone, both front and back. Nothing wrong.
Like other people reported, the speaker volume gets significantly lower when wet and goes back to normal within a half hour. Also if the headphone port gets water in it it will errenously display that "headphones are connected" which blowing into the port will fix.

I haven't submersed it yet but there's videos on YouTube with submersion and it brings about the same issues I discussed.
Higher water pressure will clog the mic membrane and make you sound distant in phone calls.
Maybe I'll build up the courage to dunk it tomorrow.
I did the dunk test the night after I got it by fully submerging it in a cup of water...worked just fine afterwards...although I was showing a friend that didn't believe that I had a "water proof/resistant" phone by putting it in the sink and letting water run over it and had an issue with the phone thinking the headphones were plugged in.only did it for about an hour...weird thing was that it didn't start doing it until about 2 hours after it had been wet. Although once it fully dried I haven't had any issues at all with it. Hope this helps.

Maybe leave the phone in the sun for a few minutes to dry? Blow on it? Several things help get the water out. But honestly, how often are you going to go swimming with a phone and then take a call immediately afterwards? I'd be thrilled that my phone didn't fry after it fell in the pool, I could care less that the microphone doesn't work for an hour - that's what bluetooth headsets are for.
Anyways, I've had my phone submerged in a sink with running water twice now, the only issues I've found is that after removing the back cover there is water on the outside of the rubber gasket, which looks normal, but I would recommend taking the back off to dry it out after exposed to water.
When i took mine into the pool I made a phone call right after and they said I sounded funny so i blew in the mic and it cleared the water out and they could hear me fine....

Not very often, but when I DO need to take that call, it will be a big problem. This is a phone after all.
I don't think I will purposely take the phone for a swim, but the reason I bought the Active instead of the S4 is because of the water/sand protection and want to confirm it works. If it doesn't, then I'll exchange the phone to a normal S4 because it's thinner.
However, based on your response and others, it seems it does offer those protection to a certain degree and the ONLY issue is that the mic may get covered with water and cause the caller not being able to hear me, but this is easily fixed QUICKLY.
i just bought mine and i took it for a test in the pool and took pics and video and i opened to see if water got inside and yes some drops where inside but not in the important area so i dry it close it BUT it seems that it got water inside somehow cuz :crying::crying::crying::crying:l later i try to see the pics and the screen went wild and then the horror screen went from white to black and that was it i try to dry it with hairdryer nothing i came back to live for a sec only to do the same then the rice trick nothing now is all black i can hear the phone respond but no image and im in despair since att told me warranty is void cuz the water indicator is red so im f up. Why 2 posts about the same issue. Sounds like you have your answer. Your phone is busto so unless you wanna go as far as replacing the screen yourself which will probably not resolve all your issues. Stop swimming with your phone :banghead:

The phone is advertised as "Water Resistance" not "Water Proof".....SO if your wife or kids spill something on it or you drop it in a pool and get it out quickly, you should be okay......If you put it in the pool and played with it (Took pictures etc...) Thats a NO NO.....
It seems you had your S5 in the pool, having fun and now its damaged. I did the same thing with my S 5 at first. I took it in the pool and took pictures under water, and had fun. The speaker sounded like it had water all in it, but after it dried up, the speaker was fine. So is my phone.
But the S 5 Active is rated i believe 30 Minutes, up to 3 feet. SO there is the problem----you have the regular S 5 and its dead bro.....
You need a new phone. I don't think anybody has a fix for water damage. It burnt up some thing inside. I hate to say it , but you will have to get another one. I learned a lesson and hopefully others did by our stories.

I can't believe everyone is telling this guy he's SOL. Yes it was a silly thing to do but who hasn't made a mistake?
Jsong, the rice trick takes weeks typically to work, helps if you can get it in direct sunlight as well to speed up the absorption rate. I would suggest giving the rice trick a try again but leave it untouched for a week or two. DO NOT USE A HAIRDRYER, you've already stated that you have but don't again. The force of the air could push moisture deeper and make the issue worse. Take out the SIM, the battery and external memory card if you have one. Vacuum the exposed area for at least 30 minutes, change up the angle of the vacuum every little while to make sure you are reaching all exposed parts. Put the dry cover back on, do not try and turn it on. Now put it in the rice and some say 24-hours works but I would leave it for at least a week. If it won't turn on after a week in the rice and the vacuuming you may need to think about replacing the motherboard which I don't think anyone sells. If you do manage to get ahold of one or any part you want to replace use the guide here to tear it down and fix yourself. https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Samsung_Galaxy_S5

OK im getting a little irritated with this kind of comment that show only the lack of knowledge the S5 normal is IP67 as the active the difference is that the active beside the IP67 has some military test of its own so both phone can be submerged up to 1 meter and up to 30 min there is no difference there OK and yes if i buy a phone thats says it can do that WHY would i do it its like if i buy a water resistant watch or whatever if it says it can be submerged up to 15 meter im gonna swim with it im NOT scuba diving because it will die. SAme thing with the S5 if is water whatever but it specifies that can be submerged up to 1 meter and for 30 im gonna do it following the security measures the one thing i did not calculated was that if the phone have some factory flaws and the water gets in and the indicator goes red im screw now

So, if I purposely crash my car into a building, and I'm laying in my hospital bed, and I say, well if the air bag worked like it was supposed to, then I would not be in this predicament, how would I sound? You'd probably say, well why would you do that anyway? There are some things that you do not do, you'd probably say. That's kind of how you sound with taking the phone swimming, but not that degree.
Well, maybe the phone was faulty. But what service center or tech is going believe you after you've blow dried it, and possibly soaked it in rice or alcohol. If you did any of that, then that throws out the entire argument about the phone being at fault, since the blow dryer, alcohol, and rice are not tested and proven procedures, or "following security measure", for the S5. I'm just saying what you need, but don't want, to hear.
And you're right also, there is a lack of knowledge around here about S5. In my opinion, it takes somewhere around a year before you understand a phone really well. That's why you don't do like you did, because almost no one around here has been in that situation yet, where they had to find a solution. That's why there's no definite answer right now and...Oops, I have to go. I have to get my phone out the sink before the 30 minutes is up. Let us know what you decide to.

The Active and the S5 both have the same IP67 certification for water ingress protection. so NO the Active is not any better under water. And in the case of the OP he just got back lock and was not sure that the back cover was completely close. I have use my S5 on the pool several times to take videos and pictures without issues, you just need to be sure of the usb flap and back case been secured.

Next time just drop into uncooked dry white rice and leave overnight and itll suck the moisture out of the phone. Heat gun is kind of dumb because your evaporating what water is in there and just spreading it... condensation must go somewhere. Its good that it went away tho and lucky the inside of the nexus 6 is nano coated for water incidents.
I was doing the dishes and I had my laptop next to the sink, and my phone connected to it, using the phone's internet. I don't know how it happened, but somehow I pulled the USB cable and the phone went full submarine. My heart skipped a beat :crying: I pulled it out of the water, it was still working, so i started wiping it, and tested the camera, speakers, touchscreen, fingerprint, charging, and everything seemed to be okay except the USB connection :silly: whenever I connected the phone to the laptop I was getting "device not recognized" error. I started to worry a bit and then I remembered I have a heat gun. So I left it powered on, and placed the heat but at full blast (about 70° Celsius) and left it there for about 10 mins (both the phone and USB cable). And guess what! It worked! Fully functional oneplus 3 after being submerged in hot water.
Tl;dr I dropped my phone in hot water, dried it, and it still works!
i wouldnt tell here in general that the phone is water resistant.
maybe you were just lucky and took the phone out of the water really fast again, so it couldnt get deep inside the phone.

It also depends if the water is somewhat salty or not. You could technically submerged the whole phone in distilled water for long and nothing would happen provided you dry it thoroughly after but if it falls into a toilet full of piss, good luck it'll most likely die right away. This phone is definitely not water resistant though.

It's not certified as waterproof, but dropping it in water even for a fraction of a second makes is resistant to water.
Your lucky! It's not water proof! It's splash resistance using it in the rain is fine... Slight water also.. As long as there is no pressure no water will come inside..

Doing the dishes
It's just luck. Somehow water did not enter in youre phone, to the mainboard.
Sometimes you don't see the effect right away. You may get corrosion after a while. It happened to me with a camera.
A few drops of water got into the camera, now the image stabilization doesn't work well also the auto brightness...
So, sometimes it can take time until you see the resullt of your phone swimming with the dishes
NO. NO NO AND NO!!! The oneplus 3 is NOT water resistant!
I dropped an ipod touch and a cheap kyocera phone in a fish tank for 30 seconds, pulled it out and after a blowdry and rice soak, they both worked fine.. But by no means does that make them water resistant. Nothing saved them but the grace of God..

God saved your phone? Dang!
don't post this stuff. If it would be water resistant they would'd tell us for sure, it's a really great feature

Mate, i never said that it is waterproof. And of course, i do not encourage anyone to go have a shower with it. There's a difference between water resistant and waterproof.

Exactly you must be really brain dead if you are actually going to try it.

Yeah! ? I'd say so.
All I'm saying is when I dropped my phone and iPod in a giant fish tank, I thanked God my things were okay with no damage to them whatsoever. When by all indications, they should have been ruined. ??
