I really don't understand why people need more than 16g, of course the option to have more and carry a larger collection is always good, but it's definitely enough. I think people are more worried about the feeling of "being limited". I have never used the cloud, and still don't plan to, unless it's urgent documents I need to transfer. I do plan on using it as a media consumption device- movies, ebook, shows, browsing etc.
Here's why
1) Put your music on the phone. This tab doesn't have cellular reception anyways, you will have your phone. Put all 10g's or however much music on your phone. It's easier to take out your phone, put in your pocket, and use as a mp3 player then to use a tablet anyways, much more convenient.
2) Apps will not take over 1g. So for 16g version, let's say you start from 14g. Minus apps you have 13g.
3) Ebooks, epubs, takes up basically NO space. You could put the entire collection of Game of Thrones, harry potter, hunger games, 30 books and it won't take up any space because they're all text files.
4) If you read comics, because they are big pictures, they might take maybe 2-3 g's. You can also put a small size of your favorite picture collection in it. So now we have 10 g's left.
5) Movies. A good quality movie takes 1G? You can have 5 movies on it. Why would you need more? Even on a long distance trip, will you finish all 5 movies? I don't understand the need to have your entire collection on the tablet, there's no need to put 20 movies on it, when you won't watch them all yet. We have 5g's left.
6) Television shows. Most television shows are 40 minutes long. They take up less space than movies. I watch a lot of shows- big bang theory, game of thrones, modern family. Just get the 300mb version, instead of the super HD 1g versions. It'll be enough for your 7 inch screen. With 5g, you can put 2 entire seasons of a show on your tablet. Or do like what I do, put the latest 5 episodes of different shows on it to have more variety.
That's it: now, what can you do with your 16g Nexus 7?
You have tons of books you can never finish, comics to read, 8 hours+ of movies to watch, 24+ episodes of shows to watch, and web browsing is always available.
Is this not enough? When you finish watching the movies or shows, delete them. Pretty sure the tablet will not be your only device, so refill after you finish! I think people are just greedy and want to put their entire collection of movies on it.. but I don't see why if you aren't going to watch them anytime soon. Not telling people how to use their tablets, and I understand it takes more effort to shuffle things into your tablet every once in a while. But I'm just saying, it's possible to have a 16g device and enjoy all the media consumption even without using clouds.
my bluray rips are 6GB. i'd love for you to tell me how to get 720p quality video down to 1GB.
Do you really need to watch bluray quality on a 7 inch tablet though?
Even if it was 6 g, ok, then one movie at a time then.
But really, you can put three 2g movies on the tablet and they'll be of the highest quality already. I dont think it makes that much of a difference on the 7 inch screen if you go up further.
No, i don't, but thats what i have my rips as. I'm not going to re-rip all my movies for one device. and the display is 1280x800, so 720 is the perfect resolution.
hence why OTG, or god forbid, a USB port is great. I can plug my 1TB hard drive into my Asus Transformer and i have all my media. On the Galaxy Nexus i can plug in a 32GB flash drive that can store 3-4 movies and up to 16 shows.
N7, right now. just the 16GB internal. which if the Gnex says anything, will actually only be 13GB.

You're kidding right? I have 6 gb of games and apps on my One X. I have a ton more purchased that I haven't installed just because I am trying to keep open space on my phone in case I want to load a few Slayer or Gojira albums on it. You can bet that my 16 gb N7 is going to be completely tapped for space within minutes of me getting it. I might keep 2-3 gb open for a movie or two but every other byte will be used up by games and apps.
I'm used to listening to my 20GB music collection. I don't want to split it up and download parts of it every day, I like a big playlist.

Ahh games, I forgot about that one. My biggest game is 200mb though, I guess I'm not really a games person, or haven't gotten into it yet.
But without games, how do apps take up space? Most phone apps are less than 20mb, and those are the big ones. Normal ones take like 1-4 mb.

Before you worry about running out of movies to watch, you need to worry about running out of battery. Your tablet won't last you for the entire 14 hours flight btw. Running out of movies should be the least of your concern.
Since your trip goes beyond reasonable usage of a tablet already (24 hours), it is reasonable that you will have to do more to sustain having entertainment on the tablet. You will have to stop somewhere to charge along the way. I hope the in between transfer time is long enough, otherwise your tablet will never have enough battery. I guess it is only fair that you need to bring an extra USB-OTG then.
I agree, an SD card would be very valuable for you in this instance. But I don't think a lot of people take 24 hour trips. I think for most people, 9 hours worth of movies (if you fill the 10g with all movies) should be more than enough until they can transfer files into it again.

Most long haul flights have power sockets in the seats especially on international flights (as long as you avoid US carriers ..shudder..) power has never been a problem.
When someone starts a thread generalizing ever users "use" of their products you have to expect this sort of response.

Yeap, and that's perfectly fine.
I guess we can say if your usage is more out of the norm - e.g. you need more than 9 hours of movies in one go- then Nexus 7 isn't that good of an option for you. Or you could still always bring USB-OTG for extra storage.
But generally, for most people, 9 hours straight of movies/books/games should be able to sustain their needs. And again, we're not talking about the end-all super tablet here. This is $250, meant to be a cheap pick-up. Just saying people can still do ok with 16g, thats all.
Nandroid and Titanium backups can take a lot of space. Also, I like to be able to download new ROMs and flash from anywhere (wifi willing). Uploading/downloading from the cloud takes too long and is too inconvenient with large files. Most free cloud services have file size limitations or not much storage space. Using cloud services can be done, but it requires juggling multiple services and a lot of time wasted uploading and (re)downloading files.

lmao couldn't resist
I'd have to say, one of the reasons I really like technology in general is there are so many differing ways to use it depending on a users wants or needs.
A large portion of the music I listen to on my phone/laptop/tablet is ripped in FLAC. I'll admit, some devices definitely sound better than others, but even on my phone with my HD380 or HD595 headphones (or streaming over bluetooth via APTX, or using one of my USB DACs that I travel with on my laptop) the difference is apparent. Even my car speakers (11-speaker Harman Kardon setup) showcase the difference in audio quality.
One of the reasons I've preordered the Nexus 7 (16GB) is for car usage. Offline maps/navigation is nice for those longer trips, but it's moreso for playing my music over speakers, as well as bluetooth OBD-II connectivity and Torque. I also tend to keep a couple 720p reencoded blu-ray rips (my entire blu-ray collection is ripped without compression on my server at home) for when necessary.
Either way, I feel I'll be able to deal with only have 16GB worth of space (I'm using about 20GB for music on my phone), but I'd prefer more OR expandable storage.
One thing I've noticed with every device I've ever owned. I've filled up all available storage (current phone is 8 + 32GB, less than 10% available. Current laptop is 128GB + 128GB SSD storage, less than 10% available. Current server is 30+ TB (24x 2TB drives in Raid-Z2 in VDEVs of 8 drives each) and has 28% free because I JUST added 8 more drives to it since we had less than 1% free).
I love storage. I love data. I love technology. And I love that there are so many devices out there than can meet peoples needs.
On my Xperia play, i have a 32gb sdcard and i have almost filled that with games alone. Games like fifa need 2gb data alone...

Look no further than this:

You can still hit the movie bucket size quoted by OP and manage to fit more than 15 movies with decent quality - no 720p of course, but x264 can do magic

I thought about this as a possibility.
Thing is, this is battery-inefficient for when you want to both use the tablet (say to read) and listen to music at the same time. Effectively, you're wakelocking two devices at once.
To conserve battery, I'd much rather use the tablet for doing both (even if doing so cuts down on the size of my collection). The tablet has a lot more battery to kill as well. Hence, the storage space is an issue.

I am an avid music listener and I don't really see that point. Listening to music on the phone hardly takes out any battery at all.. I've listened for maybe 3 hours, and it takes 10-15%? The reason is because the screen isn't on.. the screen/movies/games are the biggest battery killers. Music playback while the screen is off doesn't hurt that much. If you have your tablet for most of your gaming/browsing/movies, I think your phone would last many days and battery would not be a huge concern.
However, I'd understand why you'd want to only use 1 device at one time for convenience though.
Bought the Chromecast on a whim. For the price, its a cool doodad that seems like it might have promise.
So i set it up and to be honest, im disappointed. My Roku has a ton more support, and was still not expensive. So it got me thinking, are there any cool hacks for this thing? Can it run android? Can i unlock it in some manner that would let me stream to it from plex?
Not much

There isn't really much available for Chromecast. Google has plugged up root options and hacks with pushed updates (without an easy way to avoid the updates). If you're device has not recieved an update yet, there are ways to root it. Look elsewhere on this forum for more details. But custom development seems stalled since Google has made it almost impossible for anyone to use anything other than the meager selection of approved apps it officially supports. There were some earlier efforts to get around the app whitelist and there was an app (unauthorized) that allowed for streaming of local media (like Plex) but it was squashed by an update.
There has been some press about a possible Plex app and Google has indicated it will expand functionality. The even indicated they want to support streaming local media files but without details it's not clear what that means. Google has stated that when the SDK is finalized there will be more options. No timeline that I know of.
There has also been other press about how it may be important for Google to emphasis the big name subscription services and not alienate those companies by offering much else. We will have to see what happens, but I agree the Roku is, right now, about a million times more desirable in terms of features and functionality. I do have Chromecast to thank for helping me discover just how powerful my Roku is. I had no idea about the Roku's great Plex integration until I started trying to get the Chromecast to do more.
I've bought 4 of them and I'm truly sorry.
The Roku seems to provide the only true alternative for streaming whatever you wish at a fraction of AppleTV.
Chromecast got:
- Root disabled (truly Appleish way)
- Whitelist only apps
YouTube/Netflix/Google's Own Cloud/*Limited Chrome Browser to Chromecast (in terms of quality and functionality).

FTW, yes..but at a price! I still believe a modern Android TV stick and wireless key/trackpad gives the best bang for the buck.
But when you're paying over 100 for these devices, a second hand computer off craigslist for about the same price will do much more.
Ideally you're right but in practice they just don't measure up and any price difference to get an htpc is well worth it for the added features.
I say htpc is the best bang for your buck, it's just not the cheapest

I think we are comparing two different genres of device. Moreover, the SDK is still in development and once that is complete, I am sure this will be the most sought after and out of stock gadget. It is better to stock it right now.
Also, the biggest advantage I am seeing is the freedom of using it from any of our already existing device rather than going and spending additionally on a wireless keyboard or an air mouse.
I am sure there will be lot more activity in store in the coming days given Google's approach in the past.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
Wireless keyboard and air mouse? That's what your phone is for.
It's neat and it's cheap and I use mine once in a while when I travel, but that's it. At home it's useless compared to an htpc.
I think it's biggest use will be in traveling but there are some issues right now, like not being able to log into hotel Wi-Fi because they all use a web based login which isn't supported.
Some day though...we'll see
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't say wireless keyboard and air mouse is a replacement for my phone. You are saved from investing in these if you expect to use your htpc to perform you the internet tasks.
I alao suppose htpc's don't have RAM in those.

it's a piece of poop. is one thing for a free service like gmail to remain in beta for a decade and quite another thing for something that actually costs the consumer money to be ”beta ” at time of sale.

The wdtv is great for streaming stuff from a NAS or attached drive, but not as good as a roku for streaming from the web.
I'm a bit disappointed with my chromecast - using a tablet to browse Netflix is neat, but it seems like a one trick pony right now.
I think you guys are being a bit picky and unrealistic....... you're comparing it to 100 dollar devices! This thing only costs 30 bucks. Honestly for the money it costs it works extremely well, it does Hulu Netflx and Youtube all in HD and quite seamlessly and very smooth as well. On top of that it just works right out of the box pretty much. Sure I wish it could be hacked more? But will I say it's a piece of crap because it can't be? No....it's a 35 dollar streaming device that works amazingly well and is incredibly simple to use.

I would love to see them carry their $100 device through Airport security or carry it around to do a presentation from their Tablet!
Anyone suggesting an HTPC is better is missing the point of Chromecast. Same can be said of those saying get an Android stick.
The Idea is to have a device that you can control from your Tablet or phone and send content to any HDMI TV or Projector without having to carry a bag of Wireless control devices other than what your already going to carry around like your Phone or Tablet!
HTPC are great but not all that Portable, They are meant to be connected to a TV and stay connected. Not moved from TV to TV.
Android sticks are meant to REPLACE your phone or Tablet but requires wireless controller which usually are range restricted. If the Projector is in some projection booth 100 yards away from a stage the Android stick won't work! because the controllers will not work!
Chromecast is something that you can stick in your pocket, plug into a TV connect to the WiFi, and send content to that you can pause and control from a Tablet or Phone using WiFi.
And while it is true it doesn't do much of what it could do yet thats just because it is still brand new!
Screen Mirroring is possible!
It can use just about any app that you might want to use it with provided the App Developer adds support.
And yes it is restricted now but that won't last for long.
Is it like paying to play with Beta? Yeah you can probably say that!
But it does do things that the other devices people keep suggesting can't!
When they can do it and for the low cost of $35 let me know!

Exactly. Different target audiences. HTPCs and Android sticks - those are for the geeky (granted, we are in a geeky forum here) who know computer-type stuff.
Chromecast is targeted at people who know how to use their phone/tablet, but don't necessarily know how to root, telnet, SSH, ADB, DLNA, etc.
Of course that appeals to the geeky folks here, because if it's good enough and cheap enough for the average person to use, then we simply must hack it!

Complaining about what Chromecast doesn't do now is kind of like complaining that your Google Phone doesn't do everything CM does right out of the box!

Awesome for Practically Nothing
I got my Chromecast on day one. With the free 3 months of Netflix, the total cost was something like $6.
For the cost of a sandwich, this thing ****ing rulez.
For me there are two big problems with the Chromecast:
1. The way that Google has locked it down (using an app whitelist, using Google DNS, and moving quickly to block the only rooting method) has greatly restricted its usefulness. Plus it's annoying - there are no cool hacks!
2. The only open-ended way to use it is tab-casting from Chrome, and the "beta" code turns out to do that job so badly that it's not really usable. I don't want to watch stuttering computer video - what is this, 1999?
It may have cost only $11 net for users who got it the first day, before they cancelled the Netflix offer, but that wasn't most of us. It may cost as little as $30 now, but I have 3 other more useful media players that I got on sale for prices ranging from $15 to $40, so that's not necessarily an outstanding price either. If it doesn't do what I want, it's $30 wasted that could have been spent on something else.
Mine was sitting unused in a drawer until last month. I would have given it away for Christmas except I didn't want to dump it on any family or friends and then have to explain why it wasn't very useful.
But it has gotten more useful to me in the last month, since it now works with Plex and I've figured out how to get around some of the limitations. I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I don't consider it money wasted any more. It's just that it's nowhere near as useful as my other media players.
Guess I'm lucky on tab casting... my video doesn't stutter, it just makes my CPU fans run faster.
Maybe this device will be the "Next Big Thing"

My question is, how accurate is it? I read one review that the reviewer wore it and a fit bit for a day and they only differed by 100 steps, so sounds pretty accurate to me. I have been wearing mine for 5 days now, and I feel like its reading way high. Usually between 5000-6000 feet a day working a desk job and being a bum at home. Plus today I looked at in in my car on the way home from work and in the course of about 5 minutes of driving I apparently walked 100 steps give or take.
My girlfriend also has a fit bit, so I am going to try to wear it and the watch one day and see how close they are.
The pedometer is about dead accurate. You have to remember its on your active hand so a lot of your hand movements are going to also record as steps.

I walk around for a lot of my day and my FitBit One seems much more accurate than the Gear. Gear tracked over 15k steps while my fitbit was in the 11k range. Huge difference. I wonder which fitbit the reviewer you mentioned had on. I don't think any of the wrist based pedometers are ever going to be as accurate as the hip based. Too much inadvertent hand movement to be really accurate.

My experience has been that while walking the pedometer is VERY accurate. The problem is there are a lot of hand motions that are registered as steps when they really aren't. So as an all day tracker, your steps are going to be inflated. If you are just tracking a walk or run, the results should be right on.

Yeah thats what I have noticed. I wear mine on my non dominate hand, so hopefully that helps, but I still know it tracks hand movements. I didn't know there were different fitbits, I know my girlfriends is a wrist worn one. But she still thinks my gear is way off from her fit bit
I know my reads too high.
I have a 2 mile course I run daily. I have measured it with a car odometer and with the apps Runtastic & MapMyRun.
All those options read 2 miles or very close to that. I ran the same route today using the pedometer & it read 2.4 miles.

I realy want to like this thing, and I know it will only get better with time. But whats the point of a pedometer if its off by so much?
My gear reads high step count also. In the morning when step count is at zero if i take 1 step gear reads 6.

I got this mainly for taking night shots of the sky and stuff. Noticed the battery died out quick. May just be mine was sitting on the shelf too long before I bought it. Otherwise, it did what it needed. Even stayed connected while I used bluetooth in my car.
I only ask the question because 'technology' never stops. My 'computer' is an old Z600: 8GB old RAM, couple Xeon chips, 1GB ethernet. Ex-girlfriend's ex-husband gave me a sweet video card for it a couple years ago - 'course it was old and gross to him (so, maybe a year or 2), but pretty sweet to me. Now Nexuiz looks even better! Max settings!
More to the point, my router is pretty 'old'. It's a version 4 netgear wndr something that has been a pretty sweet ride for my lan, but, as I write, it's pretty old. I have dd-wrt on it, of course.
People say - dood, that's some old ****, I got the super-ultra-mega version X, with updated version this, and version that, for 12 million dollars and only one of my kids - DOOD - you should get it!!!
A few months ago the new router seed was planted in my head - I'm thinking about it - but, to what end? What am I missing? Anything? wi-fi 6?
It's only me in the house now - kids are grown, so their devices are gone. From that router I have the z600 as my main box (ethernet), serving up web, hosting pi-hole: I browse on it, watch movies, frag motherfukers, maybe some email; it's Debian, so, I'm always in a terminal because I can be, maybe some gimp... There's a roku in the bedroom, can't use 5Ghz - so, old wireless, couple new phones. That's it - my lan is no longer, really.
I'm not too sure at all that I need a new router. I mean, I have 3 more in the garage if this one craps out. Lol. The speeds I get on my lan are pretty good to me. I had dial-up, 52K was super-ultra-mega! - WTF! I can stream movies no problem, download lineageos images just-like-that, even on my phone when it's wi-fi connected on my lan. From my phone, anywhere in the house, I can use FX to connect to my computer and it's wicked fast - I can play music from an old dump on my computer downstairs doing laundry, or watch a video, or tweak the system, move files - so the wi-fi seems fast enough to me.
I have charter's lowest tier ISP service - 100 megabits per second. Pffft...it's barely better than the service I had in that one town 14 years ago! Still, it's 10 mb a second, at least. Which, is pretty f'kin fast to me. On 52K it was 10 minutes per MB, now it's 10MB per second, which, is pretty ancient, too!
I don't need a new router, do I? What will I gain, or, employ that I don't have now? To be honest, I'd buy one just to have a sunday morning of config'ing and rebuilding my lan, but, my ancient wisdom says - dood, 200 bucks is 200 bucks! That's gas for 3 weeks of getting to work. Gas! That's food for almost 2 weeks. Food! I'm just sayin' - my parents house cost 24,500, my car cost 32,000...
I use gas every day, and food - I use my router every day. I drink coffee every day and the only reason I'm not using a stainless steel percolator on my ancient gas stove every morning anymore is because waking up to a fresh pot of coffee that started automatically as I still slept is fuk'ing magic. How much better is wi-fi today, how much better are routers?
Not much I would say.
If you update the router you will also need to update the WiFI card on your computer.
new WiFi card will consume moar CPU power.
And things will be same.
Currently, your bottleneck is RAM followed by CPU not network.
