I have a Moto X, factory unlocked running 4.4.4
Are there any bootlpader unlocking or root methods available? I would like to install TWRP or any other custom recovery on it so I can flash a custom kernel for sweep2wake and doubletap2wake sup since coming from an LG G2 it would be very welcoming.
See the "how do I root my Moto x" stickied thread in general.
As far as unlocking bootloader, there's also a "complete Moto x guide" stickied in general that covers that.
Always read the stickies when looking for common procedures. ?

Okay, got a strange question here. I plan on going from the N5 to the unlocked GSM MotoMaker Moto X version. All I want is root with stock recovery (don't really care for a custom recovery, plus I'd like to still receive OTAs). Can I unlock the Moto X bootloader, load TWRP recovery (instead of flash), and then install SuperSU? Or do I *have* to flash TWRP to achieve root?
correct me if im wrong, but I think you can "unlock the Moto X bootloader, load TWRP recovery (instead of flash), and then install SuperSU".
or
use one of the methods in the original android development section to achieve root.

Yes, I've looked at those threads. However, in 4.4, a backdoor needs to be introduced in order to maintain root. I'd rather not have to do that and I don't mind unlocking bootloaders. This will be my first, non-Nexus device in awhile, so I just wanted to make sure I can just unlocked the bootloader, load a custom recovery, flash SuperSU and then just have root.

Just unlock your boot loader, flash twrp recovery and finally flash supersu and you're good to go. Ota's can not be accepted and flashed with root or custom recovery on the moto

Thanks! That's what I thought! I didn't know that root removed the ability to accept OTAs?

Hi I am planing my first root and I am honestly a little confused. I am on TMobile with 4.4 KitKat (Moto X).
I understand how to unlock the Bootloader and that I need to install TWRP before I can activate SU.
I am just not sure about the bugs (if any) with TWRP and what version to use.
The reason for my concern is on the TWRP website the Moto X is not listed as a supported device.
Is this video Tutorial still valid - is this how to do it with 4.4 KitKat?
And is this the latest version that works (what are the known bugs)?
I'm a total noob with the moto x, i've got a fido moto x, and the bootloader unlocked. I've read over a few things and a litttle confused on how to root my phone. its on 4.4.2 and as I said bootloader is unlocked any info on the subject would be a great help
Thank You
Install a recovery like TWRP. It will install root for you.

Hello,
I just ordered a Moto X Developer Edition, and I am wondering how hard it is to root it? I am a newbie when it comes to Android. I have looked over the sticky threads concerning the root process, and I just want to make sure that I can do it easily without bricking my phone.
I am currently using a Droid X, and I rooted that easily with Z4 Root.
Thanks for any advice!
download and install the Towel pie root app. i think there is a thread in the apps and themes section of the moto x forum.
Thank you very much!

For ALL Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web SIte. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code. However, for some carriers (like ATT, Verizon and republic Wireless in the USA) motorola does not give out the unlock code.
So when you get your X, try to get the unlock code from Moto's web site. Then....
If you can get the code, and unlock the bootloader, you can root and disable write protection no matter what ROM is on your phone.
After have an UNLocked boot loader, you may root by following -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/instructions-unlocking-rooting-dev-ed-t2649738 Please be sure to use the latest TWRP fastboot IMG file and Installable ZIP of SuperSU

Exactly this! No towell root needed. Unlock bootloader, flash a custom recovery like twrp, twrp will prompt you to root before rebooting. Done. Super fast and easy. Make sure to make a nano back up in custom recovery once you are done. This is for safe keeping in case you mess something up.
Thanks.
I don't think I can use Towel Root anyway, because I think my phone will come with 4.4
Thanks a lot guys!!
I am now rooted on 4.4.4
Thanks for all your help!

CF root with ATT branded XT1097
Does anyone know if the new CF root method that came out today will work with ATT branded XT 1097? Since we are not able to unlock bootloader directly from Motorola?
Thanks!

I'm new here, I'm not sure I'm doing this procedure is correct, but I come humbly to know if someone could provide some alternative link in order that the post of the early links are down? Now, thank you !!!

Moto X BL discrepancy
I have a Mot X (2014) and after multiple attempts to unlock the BL, I'm stumped. It's a VZW and everytime I input the code string on Moto's site they inform me that the phone is ineligible for BL unlocking.

Do not think that VZW allows the BL unlock same with ATT.

What to use for Verizon xt1096? Is it safe to try both 95 and 97 and see what doesn't fail?
Root for Moto X 2014 XT1096
Does anyone know if there has been an update for rooting the xt1096? I know that the 1095s and the 1097s both have roots available for them but does the 1096? If so where would it be found?
In response to #8, Verizon doesn't let us unlock our bootloaders, and both of the methods (for the 1095 and 1097) require an unlocked bootloader. That means we will need another way to gain root. (Just incase you're wondering, I double checked that those methods won't work by trying to use them on my 1096. Both failed, thus resulting in nothing changing...)
Works on my brazilian xt1097?
if I have a XT1095 rooted on Lollipop, I will get updates? or a I need to reflash the stock boot.img?

rooted on 5.0.1 with cf root + stock recovery. would a factory reset through stock recory be a problem? would I loose root privileges in the process? thanks

You will still get updates, but when you try to flash the update it will fail due to modifications made to the system. If you modded the boot.IMG then you will need to reflash the stock boot.IMG. You will also need to flash the stock system.IMG since it was modified with root access. Once you are completely stock again you can take the update without any issues.
locked hell
I'm in the same boat. I paid full price for what I hoped would be an unlocked phone, but I still got a fully crap-wared phone for use with Verizon. Bootloader is locked, so I'm not sure where that leaves me. I bought this direct from Moto, so not sure how Verizon is still allowed to lock me down.
thank you!
Guys, I have a xt1097 brazilian version. I would like to know if this cf auto root works for me, I'm running android 5.0 with a locked bootloader. It's better unlock bootloader an then use the cf auto root? Or is it better to use cf auto root with the bootloader locked? Does this work with xt1097 running 5.0?
Thank you!

I was wondering how to root the Alltel Moto X XT1050, I have successfully unlocked the bootloader. I was googling how to do it but things I've came across were that there were so many different versions of the Moto X.
Can anyone help??
