Hi all,
Recently my Moto X developed a screen issue. When I load any application, the screen flickers as if the window is being pulled to the top of the screen. The screen will flicker about 3-4 times, during which I can't get the screen to respond in any way.
This started happening after I installed the Google Now launcher, I've since uninstalled the launcher but the screen flickering will not go away.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how I can correct it?
Thanks!

Are you able to get video of it with another device? Is it the actual backlight that is flickering, or just the elements on the screen flashing around?
You described what sounds like the notification shade being pulled down. I've noticed that I get erratic behavior with my Moto X if there is any moisture on the screen (even a few very small drops), and some chargers. I used the BlackBerry charger that came with my Storm 1 because it had a very long (4-5 feet) cord on it, but it seemed to cause issues with the touch input. I switched to the cable that shipped with my phone and haven't had any issues since.
Maybe try wiping the screen down real good with a microfiber cleaning cloth. Not sure if screen protectors could cause this either, but I would imagine that they could interfere with the touch screen if not applied correctly or designed/made well.

Thanks fury683! Yes the elements on the screen flash around, very similar to what it would look like with the notification shade being pulled down.
I've given my phone a good wiping, it's behaving so far but we'll see if it's for good.
Have you tried restarting the device? Just try different little things and you are bound to find your answer.

Did you fix your problem?
I am having the same issue where my screen will flicker a few times as if another app is being opened by the app switcher. I noticed it happens when I am connecting or disconnecting from Wi-Fi. I tried factory resetting my phone and it did not help. It is very strange. Did anyone else experience a similar problem or find a cause?
Having this issue too — screen flickers when moving back and forth from wifi to 4g
Yes! Took me a while to connect it to offline/wifi/4g transferring, but my screen flickers 3 to 4 times (basically the view refreshes the same way crappy apps that didn't bother programming a transition go from screen to screen) every time I access an app that uses the internet after this transition between data sources. It is infuriating. Anyone ever resolve this?

Does anyone have a solution for phantom taps on your NC?
I'm on my 3rd Nook Color when I pick up the replacement unit this afternoon.
My general issues are phantom taps - or the NC doing things I don't want it to. So far a very poor experience when typing, turning a page in a book, or even just navigating the ui. The whole issue may be me, it happens regardless if I am plugged in or not. I keep a very clean screen so there is very to little gunk.
I do have sweaty palms on occasion but not out of the ordinary. I have other touch devices that have never given me this issue. If anything I think the screen is overly sensitive - hardware or software issue?
Nope it's not just you. Mine has a multitude of issues with the touchscreen...
Essentially I cannot use the touchscreen when the device is plugged into stock charger/cable as wherever I put my finger, a random touch appears somewhere on the x-axis near my finger.
It seems that the device does not like changes in temperature or humidity either when it is unplugged. Using my tablet while cold was impossible, and likewise while it had been warm.
I'm on my second tablet from Best Buy-- the first one had dead pixels galore (enough to make the best buy rep say "dang!"), and now this one has a bad touchscreen and hard to press power button.
However: I purchased one of these for my mother a few days before mine at Barnes and Noble, and it has no issues whatsoever... at least not yet.
I've come to the conclusion that this hardware is quite beta, but I'm willing to give them a chance since it is the best bang for the buck, even if I have to go through a couple of returns... it's honestly almost worth the time for me since a tablet is so valuable for schoolwork.
Fortunately mine does not do this. I think maybe for those that are having this issue it may be able to be fixed in a firmware update.
My EVO had extremely similar problems when it first came out with the touchscreen and not being able to use the dropdown menu while the device wasn't grounded. After a firmware update the phone was great with touch sensitivity.
my first one did this also. so far the second is doing fine, but the first didn't have any problems till the 13th day of owning it.
i'm hoping it's just an issue that can be fixed via software - maybe someone put an incorrect voltage input somewhere.
I was having the same issues. I bought a screen protector and that seemed to solve it. So far, it's been working fine.
I noticed the screen protector stabilized the touchscreen a lot. Before I seem to have a problem finding the sweet spot for a touch. Now it seems better.
However, my phantom pinky is always touching something while I am trying to navigate. As long I only get one finger near the screen, it's fine.
Mine came from B&N.
The only other issue I have is the magnetic clasp in the cover seems to throw the internal compass/magnetometer off a lot.

Then how is it managing to correctly position the screen with Google Sky? Is it just spooky smart?
Mine only has problem when screen gets dirty. Try a screen protector or use gloves.
is there really a compass in this thing? I just assumed there wasn't. if there is I'm buying another tomorrow!
Screen protector helps to solve my problem.
Are you seeing more issues right after cleaning the screen? I see issues then and I think it is because I an using some moisture on the cloth. If I just dust it lightly with a dry cloth and live with a few finger prints there seem to be less of an issue.

Nor can your Nook Colour.. Using something like TetherGPS would have some heading information, but the NC itself without help would not.
It might show 0, dunno there. Maps for me just shows a dot, if yours is showing different, that'd be... interesting.
For S&G I tried "Compass", it of course FC's immediately like almost all apps that try to use the GPS. Enabled TetherGPS (with no server, just the client) and it ran, but of course no data, no heading, etc.
Is this occuring when the nook is plugged in? sometimes the charger can cause phatom touches with the touchscreen. Cleaning the screen and being on a stable ROM usually gets rid of that problem.
If only I weren't so stupid ...

LOL! Ok, I sat down with it and played for a bit. It appears some tilt sensor is handling the up and down tilt. If you raise the screen over your head, it shows those stars and if you tilt it down, I see what is below the horizon. That is pretty consistent. But it's also "simulating" a compass inadvertently.
By that I mean that if I happen to turn it on facing north, it appears to track as you turn in a circle but it's really just me tilting it and it's rotating he view. If you do it enough it has no clue the direction it's facing.
I'm just glad I figured this out before I got lost in the Amazon.
Just got mine plugged it in and unplugged and within stew minutes phantom touches couldn't even reboot it im on cyanogen mod 7

Wow, it seems to have improved the accuracy! I need to play with it more to be sure.
Device: Nook Color rooted to 1.1
I had my Nook Color in the car today (40 degrees or so), pulled it out to show her what it looked like rooted. While standing in the driveway showing her different things, I found the touch screen was overly sensitive. As I was scrolling through different things (the app list, twitter, facebook), the slightest touch would select/open an item. It normally doesn't do this. It was incredibly frustrating and almost unusable. I pulled it out later and it seems to be behaving like it normally does.
Does temperature affect the NC screen? Where they any touch screen changes in 1.1? Is there a setting to calibrate the touch screen? I can't seem to find one. Any other suggestions?
I tried doing a search on the forum, but the search crashed.
Thanks.

I don't know if it's placebo or not, but I feel like this app improved my screen response.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934500
As for the other question, I would expect the screen to be less responsive in cold weather, but I don't have anything to base that on.
Guessing what you experienced was due to condensation on the screen. Doesn't take much and can be 'invisible' to you but the screen is sensitive to 'stuff' on the screen and will become overly sensitive if there is anything on it, like moisture, skin oils, etc .. a screen protector may help but unless it continues that is probably the cause.

What you experience is probably temperature related, but another thing to try is to increase the LCD screen density to around 190, 200, or a little more. For me, I get improved sensitivity, especially near the corners.
My daughter accidentally got a little water on the screen and it was a little erratic. I put it in a ziplock with a handful of rice for about 6 hours and it was like new.
I have owned 3 nook colors, the first one I owned freaked out when I used a damp cloth to wipe the screen. It exhibited some strange behavior and emitted some loud static from the speaker. It would not power down or anything... finally it just went back to normal, so I took it back to B&N and then went and bought one at walmart. I took it back because I thought I wanted the Viewsonic G Tablet. But after trying it I finally bought a Nook Color at Best Buy, bought a screen protector too so that I don't have a repeat of my first NC. The screens on these things are, I believe, rather sensitive and the cold or the moisture may have played a part in your unit's behavior.

Same here. My screen also seems very inaccurate.
Have you found a fix?

I'd be interested in a solution for this as well, since the edges of my NC screen seems to be a lot less sensitive. For instance, when the Market is launched, it takes 4-5 tries to hit the search button at the right top corner (I know that I can hit menu and select search from there, but I am trying to illustrate my point).

It's funny, actually... The cold makes your skin less detectable because of vasoconstriction in your fingers as a physiological response to the cold temperature, but a hint of moisture by means of condensation has the opposite effect.
For me, condensation is rarely a problem, but the decreased capillary blood flow effect is quite noticeable.

One thing that's been mentioned before (and the B&N salesman told me while buying a screenprotector) is that if the screen has a lot of fingerprints, it'll make the nook act weird.
Try wiping the screen of fingerprints.

Thanks for the reply. Is it safe to assume that the screen sensitivity would not be an issue in Honeycomb since it is designed for tablets? If so, I may just wait for the final release of HC before fiddling with different kernels, etc. Thanks!

final realease of HC? no one knows if we will ever have one...... anyhow, it seems to be a fix at kernel level (had to be fixed in eclair, froyo and HC), and it fact, it was discovered by deeper (the guy who ported our HC version)
my suggestion? go for it now. the sensitivity problem is way too bothersome, and it is very easy to apply

Yes, I'd love to take care of it ASAP, since I'm sick of trying to hit a small button on the screen and going somewhere else instead.

Good test tool
I ran GoJimi's tool, and since then my screen has been flipping out. Typing anything is a good test...I enter one key like "z", and get 2 - "zm". Utterly maddening.
A good tool to see what's going on is "Mutitouch Test" from JerryW in the market.
When I press with one finger, I see a "phantom" 2nd point jumping around. Very quick way to see 1) how good tracking is and 2) if there's any random inintended multitouch action happening.
I've experienced some serious touch issues in the past two days. It's happened very randomly and I can't replicate the issues. The screen losses touch sensitivity and I can't do anything, then it randomly comes back after 10 seconds only to animate every touch I made during the 10 second lull.
Has anyone had any touch issues like me?
Edit: disregard this post. got the forums mixed up with another device.

Have you updated to 5.1? Since 5.1, there were significant changes that appear to have been made to proximity sensor that seem to be affected by any sort of screen protector that may cover it. If your protector covers the sensor, then I suggest removing it.
I haven't. I currently have the notification on my lockscreen (since I can still use the power button and view that basic info). It simply just stopped working while I was using it. Going into the Sprint store early this afternoon
My N6 arrived yesterday and was immediately unusable. The keyboard filled in a ton of garbage when I was asked to first enter my name ... Power cycled to try again and have had nothing but reliability issues with typing at times the screen will lock while trying to type (no response) or assume I've clicked when I haven't which makes accurate data entry impossible.
wiped, reset and upgraded software from 5.0 to 5.01 to 5.1 - had to remove my ATT sim which initially blocked this process and reset. Issues are still present seems like the screen is defective.
Support has issued an RMA to return the device after suggesting they would replace. Not a great start.

Although we're in an pls thread, I tend to agree. If it was a hardware issue, I don't think we'd see the OS acting out the touches later.. It means the hardware actually accepted the input but the OS didn't do any thing., Likely an OS hang or something.

This is a N6 thread [emoji4]
I've started to have touch screen issues the past few days.
Any idea what may cause it?
Sometimes, when I touch the screen, say in settings, I touch one item, but a different item is selected somewhere randomly on the screen.
Happens in TWRP as well. If I select options to wipe, it will select others, and then it doesn't swipe over to execute the action.
No ideas? What would make touches appear where I don't touch, even on TWRP?
I tried the keyboard calibration on HTC's keyboard.
Any ideas? Screen protector?
It comes and goes.
I can't believe no one else is having this issue now.
I don't do stupid things with my phone, like drop it, put it in my pocket and sit on it, and wash it with soap and water.
Since I've started running Lollipop, it appears that my case is causing this issue. I've never had this problem before.
However, I updated my wife's phone to Lollipop Sense and now she is having the same issues with a different case.
Take the cases off, and they work more responsively.
I can only chalk this up to being a Lollipop issue, and hope it will be fixed soon.

I opened another thread about a similar issue I'm having after Lollipop. My gesture launch randomly stops working and I have to reboot. No other issues for me though. I have an anti-glare screen protector on mine, but had no issues before the update. I've thought about a factory reset to see if that would cure what ails.
I'm on tmo but have the same exact issues. This is what i've found so far...
I turned on the developer options and turned on show pointer. This will show you where the touches are landing.
If you scroll down slowly, you can see most of the touches are in line (up and down) and not random on the screen.
I've removed all programs that have screen overlays (screen filter, twilight etc)
I've removed the cases thinking they might be causing the issue, but removing them only slightly improved the issue I thought...
Sometimes its hard to reproduce the effect, its not consistent. So this leads me to believe that it could be a process that's running in the background that calls attention at the moment you're touching the screen, and then refocuses the screen to your point of contact. And in between it thinks you're moving your finger when you really aren't.
In any event, I can't find the exact cause of this. But, it definitely started after the update to lollipop. I had none of these issues before. I even got the phone exchanged because I believed the digitizer went bad or something. But this issue exists on my original phone, its replacement, and now on my wife's current phone and that phones replacement (across 4 phones).
I'm currently working on my wife's replacement (4 or 5 non-oem programs installed) and continue to have the problem. But it is not consistent as I can't readily reproduce it.
What i've done to try and learn more is when I see the screen pointer light up in random places, I keep pressure on the screen so I can observe where the screen is registering contact. It almost looks as if it's trying to pull down the shade. Whether it be because of the dual points of contact and it thinks we're swiping down, or because of another program that is stealing focus for whatever reason.
If anyone else has insights into this, please let us know as this is more than frustrating! I keep calling people in hanouts with a lot of people and they aren't happy about it lol.
Also for reference, we're using ADW ex launcher instead of Stock HTC Sense. But even when I remove ADW (uninstall) and run sense, it continues to happen. So it's not that.
So, I've noticed a weird problem my RP2 has. I carry it in my hip pocket, and at times (happens frequently enough to be annoying) when I pull it out to use it, the screen doesn't respond to a normal touch. I have to really push down hard on the screen to get it to register. If I let it sit for a few seconds/minutes the touch responsiveness fixes itself and it can be used normally. Not sure if it could be a physical problem with the digitizer/connection or if something is going on when it is "asleep" in my pocket. Just weird that it fixes itself. Anybody else see anything like this or have a suggestion as to what it could be? The phone is totally usable, and even when it messes up it still works I just have to push super hard to get it to do anything. Sometimes i'm afraid I'm going to snap the glass, although I don't really think that is likely to happen. Thanks for any ideas.
Just to weigh in I also have this issue not very often but enough to notice it. Especially since the last update also when I zoom with the stock camera it just freezes.
I'm having similar issues, camera fixes if i reboot but thats annoying if your trying to get a moving shot, also noticed it sometimes freezes switching to portrait mode.
For the screen freeze I have found if i use my finger print to unlock when the screen isnt responding its starts to work. but i didnt have the problem until i put on a crappy glass screen protector.

I use Ambient Display and sometimes the screen behaves as you've described where it won't reach to touch, but I've always just given it time/pressed the power button repeatedly until the screen came on (or continued to tap the screen lightly)... never tried pressing down very hard.
