Camera Overexposure - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been recently taking photos with the Z1 and I can say it's a beast both on 8 and 21 mega pixels..
My problem is that some times it overexposes the picture making it worse.
Can I play with some settings on manual or do I need to install another app?(Recommend me some)
Thank you very much

So you know the solution already - go manual mode and play with exposure, that will help a bit. Otherwise, it's hardware and deep software coding that need to be modified.

Turning down exposure doesn't bring out good results

If using HDR isn't the solution then probably nothing is, the z1 and z2 camera are well known for being overly over-exposed. Or you can try third party camera app

Picture quality with 3rd-party apps

We all know now that the camera software is taking some bad pictures because of some compression issue.
But have anyone tried 3rd party apps like camera zoom or any other?!
Is the quality better?
I ask because I want to know if its a software issue or a hardware issue...and want to know before I buy 3rd-party camera app.

The quality is the same since every 3rd party app uses the camera APIs or camera Framework provided by Sony. It's a software problem, not a hardware one, but Sony is who has to improve it.
I wonder if CM or AOKP roms have their own "camera API" instead of Sony's. Probably they could fix the issue before than Sony does...

Thanks for answer...Hm thats not good...Does CM or AOKP teams know about the issue or said anything about improving the camera for us?!
I did a chat with sony support and they said they are looking in to the matter but "don't know when/how the issue will be solved"
It's a software problem.
For daylight i use the stock camera in burst mode,it give a very good image quality.
For night time i use night camera from playstore,it removes all the noise.

Only difference I noticed with camera zoom is u can set 100% jpg quality and pics go to 2.5mb instead max 2.2mb
So it's not much better but I hope rizal finds a solution for the problem like he did with my neo camera

XSP camera

guyz when i take photos with my sp 8 MP the photos looks like minus 8 MP not 8
reallly we should do something about this we have paid for 8 mp camera not a potato camera !!
pm: i used pro capture and many other applications but the shots arenot even near to any samsung 8 mp phone while the video recording isnot that bad
Known issue. Some say hardware some say software. I believe that this is a software matter. You need to turn off superior and go to normal. I also installed the stock ICS app (search XDA or go to Google Play).
For me the main issue is yellow inside the picture when i take one at night with flash on.. But like i said i believe this is a software issue
if its a software problem then its a disaster and if its a hardware problem then its a ****en disaster .. how come
yea btw i noticed that yellow dominance on the photo but u can solve it using procapture but the over all quality still sux
Well it is not a disaster since a software bug can be patched and a hardware bug needs to be replaced or fixed by a service centre
Outdoor pictures seems ok for me if I am not using the superior auto mode. However yellowish pictures during the night sucks. Seems like the white balance in the software is messed up. Just change the white balance mode to incandescent during night.
Well day time shots look fairly nice in my opinion. During the indoor, moderate light and low light conditions there is a lot of noise and video is exceptionally bad. Im not really sure as to what the problem is, the Sony Exmor sensor is supposed to be really good tech, so im hoping its a software bug. Or it could be that the mobile version of the exmor sensor used in the XSP just isint a good lowlight performer. Your guess is as good as mine
Btw if you guys are rooted with CWM then i suggest u take a look at this mod. After flashing this my camera performed slightly better.

I think it'll be hardware tbh, surely If it was software somebody would've created a fix?

It's not easy to make a fix for camera ! It would probably need rewriting of some libraries and require a lot of skills. It's not very likely that we have someone who can do that in or XSP community. Plus the camera libraries are probably not open source so it will be even more difficult.

I agree, we cant be quick to blame the hardware. Camera libs are sony's proprietary software so i dont think theres much we can do atm(hack ,modify etc). In time im sure sony will release a fix, quite possibly in the upcoming 4.3 update.
Cheers
Still dont believe its a software issue.
What makes everybody think Sony will solve it via update?

I never said Sony will fix it. I said it is complicated to fix. Hopefully Sony or another developer will do it but it is not very likely. We shouldn't stop to hope anyway!

[Q] How to get this camera to make good pictures

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

Those do look better. Do I understand correctly that I should take a course in photography and buy a an app to get decent pictures out of this thing? I've heard about FV-5 before. Is it that much better than the stock camera app?

there are two apps much better than FV-5
1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)
2) Camera Zoom FX: Faster focus. More MPX option (18MPX resolution is available)

Then my device is broken. I tested a few shots next to a Galaxy Note 3, and it made much (MUCH) better pictures than my Z1. Tried all kinds of settings, no way to make it right. So mine must be ****. I'm getting it exchanged because of a lazy pixel anyway, but I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I thought they made quality products. :x

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?
Thanks a lot!!!!

[Q] can someone help me stop heavy post processing?

I have a sony xperia Z C6603 and I absolutely hate something about the phone. Before i take pictures it looks great (amazing even) as i take the photo the picture is perfect, then after a second it processes it so much i look more like an alien from outer space than a human being. Not only this but the files are also ridiculously small compare to all other phones. I've downloaded the FV-5 app and it's great, but my photos from my front camera stll lokks like horse s***. i do not want other setting configurations, because nothing fixes it... Has anybody made a fix for this via rooting or whatever? i've searched all over the internet after a solution , but can't seem to find one. One of you geniuses must have a solution, right? (have the 4.3 android version and 10.4.B.0.569 build number).
Not yet. People have tried.many things but.no luck so far. At least Sony finally updated the camera app which was the same since x1 was released

geez.... Yah... my photos did not get better at all, haha. If they could just change the format to JPG or whatever (know that is big files) that would be fantastic, but nooo.... (now referring to sony and not XDA-developers) Great phone, TERRIBLE photo software.

That does not help with the secondary camera, it's bad quality no matter what I do.

we can see it two ways
the camera hardware sucks and we can't do anything about it
or the camera software sucks and we have to wait for sony to update their binaries and libraries and other stuff. which we also cannot do anything about.

Hello!
I have installed AOKP 4.3 ROM on my Xperia Z. When I need to take a fast picture, I just use auto ISO/Exposure...
When I wanna get better picture in low light, I just use a little bit tweaking In low light, when I'm taking picture of some close object, I just put ISO on 100/200 (max), use flash and that's it! When I'm taking picture a little bit further (3/4 meters), I use 200/400 ISO, and use flash if I can (very big con of our device is bad flash). When I'm doing night portrait, just put ISO on 400 and turn on HDR, photos will look awsome believe me
Tonight I could upload some pictures from my Z, just to give you some clue.
P.S. When you're using front camera, turn on HDR you will get a much better photo quality

Reclaim of the camera

Hello dear xda users,
as we know, our xperia Z doesn´t have the best camera. I have it for several months. In my case, it makes worse pictures then mid-range devices I used before it, especially in the indoor daylight conditions. I noticed there are some tips to make it better in manual mode, but still it isn´t a win.
So what do you think, could it be reclaimable? Do you have some experience with it?
Thanks for your opinions.

Some softwares can help you produce better results. However they would not by nay means increase your camera pixels or anything but only help you focus better with better exposure and produce better colours
Like for example if you snap documents from your phone camera, camscanner can do wonders.
There are other applications for taking pictures as well on playstore.
Quote me if you have any other question

If you think your camera is faulty, only then Sony can help you with your warranty. However you can visit a Sony care and discuss your problem with them. They might be able to help.
