I have done that however a heytell message was sent from the phone to me while it had no sim card or WiFi connection. Maybe that isnt a bad thing if the telco provider is giving us free data!? When have they ever been that generous? I dont want a surprise bill later on.
Basically I just want it as an ipod equivalent.

Without a SIM card there is no way you can have GSM/3G/4G. If you still see signal bars etc. then it is a software problem.

It is still locked to the optus network. Done a factory reset and I still have the signal bars. If I unlock the phone and install a suitable rom it should solve my problem?
Can you recommend a rom that would suit my needs? I am fairly new to all of this and there are alot of options.

Yes you can solve this problem by unlocking your phone.
First check if your phone is indeed locked by using the following code (A lot of people say that an Optus purchased Galaxy S is not locked):
*#7465625#
Reply back with the output.
When it comes to ROMs you have a lot of options based on your needs.
If you want a fast device then try Mackay ICS.
For gaming try CyanAOSP (Jelly Bean), CyanAOSP (KitKat).
For customizations try Cyanogenmod or Cyanogenmod based ROMS.

Thankyou. I will let you know the status of the unlock chack. Will have a look at the roms you suggested. Best camera, battery life, and ease of use.

Good. It looks like your device isn't locked.
Try and flash a custom ROM.
Make sure not to flash straight to KitKat because you might lose your IMEI.
Flash in steps (ICS -> KK).

1) yes
2) http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/ for rooting, check the roms for XT860 in the dev section. (i'm not very familiar with XT860)
3) I'm not sure for XT860
4) Yes there are ICS roms which are stable and working, but some features don't work like video recording, hdmi, and some bluetooth issues(?)

thank you sir appreciated. i hope somebody will answer question 2 and 3 hopefully
I believe that most XT860 ICS ROMs have a flashable patch which includes a fixed build.prop and libmoto_ril.so to get data functioning.
how to unlock this phone ? what is the way ?

Do you have an XT860, or Droid 3 (XT862), or both?
If it's the XT862, and I'm assuming you've used the SIM card from your carrier, not a US one, then you should check the Network Mode. Do this by going to Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Network Mode, and make sure it's not set to CDMA.
If it's the XT860, that shouldn't even be an option.

I'm not sure whether they lock out the other carriers in Canada like Verizon does with AT&T/T-Mobile, but if that is the case, you'd probably need a SIM from somewhere else.
Here's what people have to do to get the D3 to work with AT&T and T-Mobile, though I don't know if something similar would work on the XT860.
Good luck.
man im screwed. i bricked razr xt910 so i bought this phone and now i cant even use this either. sigh
i have another concern,
i typed on my droid *#06# and it doesnt show up an imei number
in the back there is a sticker with the imei number but when i input the code or try to look through about phone section of the droid there is no imei number stated
what is that supposed to mean?

I am having the same problem right now, at first I thought that something might have gone wrong with my slimbean rom, so I flashed the latest 4.2.2 and still the same problem...no signal. I tried to use my sim card in a different device and still no signal but my brother's simcard worked on my SGS!! I'm not sure what's happening, maybe someone can explain how to fix this
Have you posted this on the Slim Thread where you got the Rom
As there may have been other users with same issue that has solved it!

Loosing Data frequently...Please help

Hi,
I bought i9000 galaxy mobile from Canada and unlocked in India and the baseband version in UGKG3. The carrier is Airtel. The phone works well in any ROM, but only one biggest problem is with Data. I frequently loosing the data signal. when ever I loose data I have to restart the mobile. After rebooting the data stays for an hour or so then again data will disappear. This phone accepts only UGKG3 baseband.
Please any one help to fix this issue.
Thanks,
Ajay

My mobile don't accept any other modems expect KG3.
Thanks,
Ajay
Thats too bad ajay_lanki.. You can try both dormancy disabled and UMTS only (so only 3G and no HSDPA/U), cause maybe the problem is also related to your phone not being able to properly switch from H down to 3G.
bokos1987, its just <root>\system\

Sorry for probably stupid question but I just panning to buy S3 mini with simlock (on O2 UK) and I would to install CM10.x on it.
So if is any problem with install it? Do I need to unlock bootloader first like on sony/sony ericsson phones or root is enough?
I tried to find and answer by search but there are not full, confusing or probably outdated.
Regards
Thom

Samsung has the bootloader unlocked by default, so you don't need that like in xperia devices. I had two xperias before the samsung too. You can install cm roms with your sim locked or unlocked
