Buy Xiaomi? - Mi 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys. i want to buy xiaomi mi3 but im confused as many ppl who have bought it say that its build quality is not upto the mark also flipkart isnt supporting after sales for the device...and many also state that its the best phone ever...
please anyone can guide me through?

Hi, I have xiaomi mi3, what i could say is that it is quite up to my expectation.
Solid build with fast hardware, you will most likely need not to look for service center for repairs unless you have misused the device(ex. drop).
My wish for this device would be an AMOLED screen! so I could enjoy much more battery life and notification on standby.

Boy are you way wrong. Most people don't buy the device because 1. It's not available world wide other the. A china based site. 2. People don't like MIUI. Most would just buy an iPhone if they wanted that type of closed sourced OS. 3. Developers don't buy it due to lack of Kernel source code.
Benchmarks mean nothing to anyone that knows cell phone tech

Well, not really true is it? 99% of people don't care a bit wether the OS is closed source or not. Plenty devs use Windows/OSX/iOS although it lacks kernel source code and is closed source.
Biggest problem is your first point: They don't sell this phone on every corner near you. There are however plenty trustworthy webshops around, I got my MI3 from Ibuygou.com and it was delivered in 5 working days, thats just as good as a local webshop.
Concerning the phone: I think it's a bit oversized compared to it's competitors, the bezels are quite large. This hasn't been a problem for me however and is compensated by the slim design. Another problem is the lack of 4g/LTE. Other than that it's just a great device, especially when you take the price into account.

As it is posted here. Most do care about the kernel source as without it you can't get a working aosp build. And most Android devs use Linux to develop.
Your right you can't buy it and unless they redo the look of it they never will sell it outside of China.

1. Its available outside china. Officially
2. Have you even checked the MIUI stats. Its one of the most widely used custom ROM.
3. even after being closed source it has lots of stuff to customize and mods to flash compared to iOS. There are even custom ROM out for it.

I was scared if the same stuff like you. Me n my sis bought it for my dad. But when the device arrived and i opened the box. I was surprised to see such an awesome device for so low cost. Felt like for once i was not being looted by big companies like samsung htc. I have owned plenty of smartphones. I buy nokia and samsung stuff, always the flagship devices but i know that they are overpriced. This one is not.
I can hardly think of any cons for this device.
16gb storage is a negative point depending on your usage. If you are an average user then even that shouldn't bother you.
Performance is superb
Camera is awesome. I have taken hundred's of pics to test it. Some people will say that low light photography is not that good. Show me one camera phone that takes awesome pics in low light and i will gift you that awesome phone. Maybe they are good or ok but nothing when compared to pics under normal daylight or lighting conditions. Have tested iphone5S, iphone 4, s3, s4 etc and plenty other phones. Low light pics in reviews are under certain amount of low light and taken at a particular angle and depends on light source and plenty other factors. And even the distance from the objects. I pretty sure that you will never take such low light pics. In practical every smartphone camera fails(relatively) in low light.
One again this phone has awesome camera you won't regret it.
Gps locks pretty fast.
Battery backup is unbelievable. I still check the battery left in my dad's phone when he come home and i still can't believe that how can it give such an awesome backup. My dad makes ton's of calls and is always using his phone is free time experimenting as this is his first smartphone. Sometimes he switches on bluetooth, gps, wifi etc on and it stays on the whole day until i notice it when he comes back home. And its been a month and till now it has never ran out of battery in a single day. Can easily last full day even if you use it heavily.
Screen is not. Amoled but its still awesome
Phone feels premium.
I showed it to some of my friends and asked them to guess the price. Everyone guessed over 30-35k and wanted the phone. But if you tell them its Chinese first then they are like it ok..not that good.... Its all in the mind. Not every Chinese stuff is bad. My sis and mom were even sure that it's metallic. Lol
Very light and thin phone. U suggest you buy cover for it to add some weight and thickness. Otherwise to me all these slim phones feels like they will slip off my hands and break.
It has fallen few times now from bed...table... From my dad's hand and no damage so far. So build quality is also good. Although i would advice you not to test it yourself. Because sometimes phone might not break from 10m height but it will break from 1m. Its all just luck (or you can call it angle of impact, place of impact, density of the material that it had impact with, temperature of the phone/surrounding at the moment etc. Which in short i call luck)
So don't test your luck until and unless you can afford a bad luck.

Now I know it seems like I hate the company or have a personal issue with them. Quit the opposite really. I want them to become a contender in the mobile world, but they have to do it right or they will be another fly by night OEM.

will they ever release kernel source..as they have for mi2 as far as i knw maybe wrong..

Hugo Barra has promised a late 2014 kernel source release.
As for the phone, its awesome, but don't expect wonders from the camera, as it does struggle with low light, its much worse than a galaxy s3, believe me, I tested it.
Also consider the difficulty to get warranty if you need it. Many legit stores but a lot of ifs in warranty declarations from them, beware.
For the price, I took the risk, didn't regret it yet
Lack of ROM alternatives has bugged me for a while but now that is changing, and I really learned to appreciate miui and their fast update cycles..

I DONT WANNA TALK ABOUT THE GOOD POINTS cos I all of them can be found everywhere about how good the Mi3 is. So heres the bad points:
1. (Pretty obvious) No kernel source. And just like what the guy here said "No AOSP ROMS"
2. Appearance. Gotta tell you this, the phone is really extremely nice to hold the phone potrait due to its curved sides. But when in landscape mode, especially when gaming, the edges of the Mi3 simply digs into your palm and it really hurts my hand. Other than that its pretty okay, well build. A replacement case can solve this.
3. Storage. Xiaomi Mi3 actually comes in 16GB and 64GB. Sadly, Mi3s with S800 comes with 16GB and the Tegra 4 version comes with 64GB and thats sold in China with China networks.
4. MIUI. Its okay at first. After while, you feel like having Stock Android launcher, Trebuchet. That too can be solved with a 3rd party launcher so its minor. But MIUI is heavily skinned and it effect the RAM usage of the device. With CPU-Z, the device has 1.8GB of RAM. But with MIUI here, it cant get more than 1GB of RAM even with the RAM Cleaner button. Its always left with about 700-800MB of RAM available.
5. The speakers. It sounds very funny. Idk how to describe it. Maybe im wrong though. But the speaker is not big enough and loud for my use. If you're using the Mi3 now. Try playing some music and look at the bottom of the phone. Use your thumb and cover the speaker grill furthest from the MicroUSB slot hole. Yea, the sound got blocked and the remaining holes aren't playing any sound. Abit of lies there.

I agree with the rest of your post, but just wanted to chime in. OSX does have publicly available kernel source.

You should give a try. If you want bully quality test MI4.. I am very proud with MI2s with Mokee 444.

Seriously thinking of taking the plunge and buying

Hello I have been looking into buying this beautiful phone since I first seen it. I am in the US and will be buying it online to use on T-Mobile, I would like to know if anyone is here also using it and how is the reception? Do you get LTE? Also I've read in the roms section about a lithium and hydrogen version? Are they from different regions, what makes them different? I'm using a Mate 9 but am ready to own this phone.

I had it and here in Europe, I am on T Mobile as well but without LTE connection, and I had various problems with it, mostly about not localised and optimised software, very bad camera, handling (very slippery)...etc.About Roms, there are global roms and other roms and I found them pretty unstabile.
Literary, if you speak Chinese, then this is phone for you, if not, from my experiance, for that money better buy Samsung S8+.It is more serious product.
Before you start using Mi Mix you need to create MIUI account which is bounded with your phone number,so eventual reselling is another problem.
Anyway....it is beautiful device but for costs of a lot of headaches.

The official Global Rom has all the languages, so no problem with the language (and it includes Google Play and it doesn't include any chinese-only apps)
There is a also a port of the LineageOS Rom and the RESURRECTION REMIX Rom.
The biggest problem is that you will not have any warranty, no service, no spare parts. If you are willing to resign from these for the best looking device, go ahead!
I can't speak for Tmo, but att I rarely get LTE but it is available, mostly HSPA+ though
The camera is a disappointment, but I was coming from a galaxy s6 so I was a little spoiled
If you are comfortable with flashing roms, I'm really enjoying the resurrection remix rom
It's a big usability improvement coming from the chinese stable rom
I have TMobile I get 4G I'm in NY my camera takes good pics I'm on the global stock MIUI rom and get insurance thru 3 party

I'm using this on MetroPCS and for the most part it has been very very solid for me. MetroPCS is basically the same network as Tmobile. On EpicRom I have LTE and my calls work just fine. Also, the version of Epic ROM I used had VoLTe support. Not even 100% on what it does but the option was checked off.
If you don't believe me just go to willmyphonework.net and type in Xiaomi Mi Mix and it will tell you exactly what carriers will work.

THIS GUY AGAIN, seriously though I actually have this phone on T-Mobile US, South Carolina Upstate area. It connects at 4G LTE in almost every place my wifes Samsung S7 Edge does. Durability wise you have to keep in mind its slippery and needs a case if for anything else to keep a grip on it. Screens fantastic, connections on par with US models and the storage /ram is unequalled currently. Had a mate 9 just before it and there really worlds apart. Now the camera is MEH, be prepared for that - its not bad just MEH. Everything else is really good, bonus it has built in equalizer for head phone playback [which means I didn't need to root it to put viper on].
I use the shipped Chinese official, google apps all installed with no issues. You can buy the S8+ if you want to step down in storage, ram and over all screen to phone. Personally the S8+ and the LG 6 are basically the same compromised high price devices. But its your money, both break fast when dropped also.
Haven't had a single head ache out of the Mi Mix or the MIUI [been using it on other devices for years]. Shoot me questions if you want.
Thank you all for your posts they have been helpful. I definitely wouldn't buy another Samesung ever again. I do love rooting and romming my phones, I have been following the ROM section and yesterday when I checked up on it I seen the additions of lineage and RR both I ran on my Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3T. Those were a big deciding factor for me because I can't live without my aosp, and now with the reassurance of LTE working I think I will be jumping in on this beast.

Go for it. It's one of the best device I've ever owned.
Don't worry about it when people say that they are having trouble with softwares that are not "localised or optimised". They don't know what they are talking about. The ROM is not really an issue at all, just flash to third party ROM like EPIC Rom, or you can use Xiaomi's Global Rom.
And don't be misguided, you don't need a MI account to use any Xiaomi device, that includes the MI MIX.
This is my second Xiaomi phone and I'm running off the stock Chinese Rom which I have no issue with. There's no need to create a MI account to use this phone.
Here is my opinion->
- The phone is great in build quality with the most premium material(ceramic);
- It has huge amount of storage(I have 256GB);
- It has a lot of RAM(6GB for me);
- It has the best Android iteration - MIUI;
- It has quite some innovations brought at once in terms of tech;
- It has great battery life;
- It is too big;
- It has the worst camera I've had for quite some time;
I will stick to mine for the good reasons, but really regret for the camera.
Make your math and good luck.
P.S.
If you buy one, install Camera FV or some other app. You will get far better shots.

Don't mind the comments about that this is for chinese market only, or the MIUI account is bad....etc. The phone works perfectly on most places(but still do a check for your country) and MIUI is great performer with lot's of cool stuff. I am using their system since my Samsung Galaxy Nexus
The problem with MIUI is not that it doesn't perform well.
It may still be on Android 6 and it is missing the enhancements of API 24 and API 25 but it has other additional features that compensate for this.
The problem is that it is closed source and you cannot know what the code does in the background, and whether it sends data back home. But thank god, there are now ports of LINEAGE and RESSURECTION REMIX roms. So no reason not to get the device from a software perspective.
Well, you got a lot ppl here telling you some good, some, but here my 2 cents. I love the phone! I love the big screen, I dont use the camera so I dont care, I like the call quality. Its cool being that there is no earpiece yet, you can still hear the ppl youre talking to. You may have to turn the volume all the way up in certain situations, but its fine. I love the fluidity, moving around the phone is very snappy, I never have any issues. I do play Pokemon Go, a lot, and that isnt as smooth as it is on the iPhone, but its not bad. It did freeze on me when I dropped a lucky egg and went through to try and evolve as many Pokemon as I could. The battery life is the BEST IVE EVER HAD on a phone before... well, maybe the battery life on the Nokia Lumia 1520 was better, but I cant recall. Now, EMUI as a whole isnt bad, it really isnt! I am currently using stock, chinese ROM. and as far as I know, im on the latest firmware. But, as soon as I get my hands on a Windows based computer, im going to root it and install a custom ROM. Ive heard Epic is supposed to be the best, but im the type of guy that will flash a few ROM's before I settle. I could go on and on about this phone as a daily driver, but, I really do like it. If you have any specifics, hit me up and id be more than willing to answer your questions. But long story short, I love the phone.

You're gonna get addicted, especially to the screen and build materials! Have seen tear-down videos, and even the inside is beautiful! I rotate to different phones often and you will find yourself wanting when using phones after this one. Questions will subconsciously creep into your head when you go back to a different phone; ie. "why is there a bar at the top of this phone?""why does the back of this phone scratch so easily?" Its like seeing a slice of the future in a dream and then waking up to a disappointing reality as you grab that iOS or Pixel device. You've been warned.

I recently picked one up, I have the Chinese Rom version, 256gb 6gig of ram. I've been using it for a month now in CA and NY and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the best device I have ever owned, hands down, nothing comes close. I honestly haven't had a issue with the camera but I don't take many shots with the phone so I don't care. As for MIUI I really like it, as a 1st time user of it, it has a very different feel and look to regular stock android which is very refreshing to me. You end up purchasing one, you will not regret it.
I've also had the phone great phone but I'm one of those people who likes to change phones every few months.
MIUI was great to use and if you get board just us a different launcher, now only thing you need to know if your staying on Chinese build is disabling a few power saving features to get push notifications like what's app, email etc
My only issue letting it go was I wanted the 7.0 to use 2 app support and I really didn't like the notification tray, tried exposed but couldn't change it the way I wanted. Again this will probably not bother you but overall it's a great phone once you fiddle around the software.

Pros and cons
I've had my Mi Mix (International stock rom, 6gb, 256gb) for a few days. I got it on sale on Gearbest for $606! Here's some pros and cons so far:
Pros:
-I'm on AT&T and I get 4g LTE all the time in my area.
-Insane amount of storage. I can't imagine ever maxing this thing out.
-A very good screen (though not as colorful or as sharp as what you'll find on Samsung's new phones).
-Excellent performance (though again, not quite as snappy as the S8+, which my wife owns).
-The most beautiful device I have ever held! Pictures do not do it justice. It is simply exquisite.
-The camera is plenty good for my purposes (taking pictures of my kids when we're on outdoor adventures).
-Watching videos and playing games on that bezel-free screen is awesome!
Cons:
-MIUI does have a bit of a learning curve.
-You have to change battery and notification settings quite a bit to get push notifications working properly (though this only takes 15 minutes to do).
-I had issues with text messages for a couple days before I found a fix. Now they work perfectly.
-The phone is very slippery.
-Ceramic, while very scratch resistant, shatters easily. (I'm using the provided leather case most of the time.)
-Despite the tiny bezels, the phone is still big and heavy. There's no way to make a 6.4 inch screen feel small in the hand.
-Call quality, while adequate, is nowhere near as clear as on my Moto Z or my wife's S8+. It sounds like the other person is on speaker phone.
-The camera, while fine for me, would never be good enough for my wife (she has a blog and needs professional-quality images, which she really can get with her S8+).
All in all, the pros definitely outweigh the cons FOR ME. But they might not for everyone. I hope this helps.

Note 8 or One Plus 5

Hi, I need some advice on which device I am going to buy. I'm going to use this I guess 3 to 5 years as I dont replace my phone that often so this thread will help A LOT. I'm basing on some reviews, speed tests, but the two seems to be on par with each other. Price is/may kind of an issue here as I would love to use some of the money (if I buy the OP5) for the after sales and some personal stuff. However if the Note 8 is really "bang for the buck" then I'll gladly go with it. I also tried to search some issues. Here's what I found so far:
One Plus 5:
GPS Issue
Bluetooth Issue
Overheating issue
Jelly Effect in screen
Note 8:
Red tint in a lot of device
Light leak (lights leaking on the side of the phone not much of an issue for me)

Performance (but I've read OP5 has better. The 8gb ram may be the reason. But please feel free to correct me)

Samsung phones tend to slow down after months/years of using it.

Body build is somewhat easy to crack due to glass body + curved edge
Samsung is a little bit strict when it comes to flashing Custom ROMS and I dont know if the SPen functionalities will be affected. (Please correct me here)

I may be wrong with some of this but I've researched and this is what I've seen.
If this is a point to consider, I'm coming from a Xperia Z3Compact which didn't last long (I hated sony to the hell because of this) because of the digitizer issue. However, I enjoyed tweaking that phone. Now I'm forced to use my iPhone5s with jailbreak.
Note: Just to be clear, the devices in comparison are OP5 8gb/128gb and Note 8 6gb/64gb Exynos

Thank you guys. After a long comparison, I'm going for the OP5 even with the rumors of OP5T. I just hate the back fingerprint scanner placements which is the trend now. And regarding with the bezels, I'm more into those phone with bezels on top and bottom for landscape usage. I've been trying the S8+, and some games that I play doesn't maximize or utilize the whole screen which leaves some part of the screen blank. However, the screen in the Note 8 is A1 dont get me wrong, but I'm more into the performance and the OP5's screen is enough. Thank you guys!
For me would have gone oneplus 5,cause that thing is crazy fast. However the jello, jelly put me right off. And the fact that oneplus 5,would not until now come out in the open about it, really bugged me and beggars belief!. You can see the problem as soon as you pick the device up, so that reason I went note 8 and it's been an amazing experience. I haven't played games on it yet, still enjoying just browsing, multimedia, taking photos of my munchkins etc.
I had the oneplus 5 like 4 phones ago and it was great. No issues whatsoever, no jelly or any of the other issues you mentioned tbh. Bang for bucks it is the best phone you can get. Great for flashing and whatnot. That being said the note 8 has so much more added value and the exynos has a dev community that should keep you flash happy for years to come...

Ah yes, the jelly effect. I've also heard it too and seen it in facebook. That thing also prevents me in purchasing this device. However, some owners claimed that their device has small to no signs of jelly effect in their device. So I think they have fixed it now, I wish. Thank you for your comment

Body build is somewhat easy to crack due to glass body + curved edge
Samsung is a little bit strict when it comes to flashing Custom ROMS and I dont know if the SPen functionalities will be affected. (Please correct me here)

I a solution for you to avoid those listed "issues" if you decide to buy a Note 8.
Just find a open box or used one and inspect it fully before handing over the money.

That's a personal decision. Only you can weigh the pros and cons of each phone... and you seem to have done a great job of listing them.
The SD card is the dealbreaker for me. I carry about 200 GB of hi-res music. At this point, that's difficult to replicate any other way that doesn't involve paying even more for music I already own.
I've had the oneplus5, now currently have the note 8.
The reasons that made me return the oneplus 5 were as follows
- The jelly screen ....once you see it, it'll bug you forever
- The camera in my opinion wasn't all that..the lack of OIS was really annoying. Videos were shaky as hell! (It was improved with software stabilisation, bit it wasn't anything compaired to realtime optical stablisation
I really wanted to like the phone, it's so cheap for what you get and I love how oneplus allow you to root and mod away.
You need to decide what you'd want from your phone

In 3 or so years you probably won't want a phone with all that bezel. I'll venture out and say if you want a phone that won't feel obsolete sooner than later do to design get the note 8 hands down (or s8+).....imo

I think the Note 8 has a higher chance of being obsolete. Reason being the 8GB RAM of the OnePlus 5; it will probably become standard on all devices in 2018 or 2019.
It's not like all that extra screen gives you extra functionality that you won't have if your device has bezels. So I don't see why a device with bezels would become obsolete.
Design is really the last thing you should look at when making your decision. You're gonna use one of those devices, not stare at it and admire its design. You're probably gonna put a case on it anyway, so that whole design aspect flies out the window.

I respect your opinion but I think you're off a smidge. If design were not important there would be no iPhone X. Expect large bezels to be frowned upon in the 2 years. Bezels will get smaller that's just a fact. 8gb is overkill how will OEMs justify the 8gb when Apple does wonders with 3. 6gb will remain the maximum and 4gb the standard. We might see 8gb again but it sure won't become the norm.
Now I know that I referred to Apple as a reference for both arguments but for better or for worse Android sets trends and they cement it. It's just facts.

Yeah, the camera in OP5 kinda sucks at videos. I've watched many camera reviews against Note 8 and boy that OP5 videos are shaky but I think they can do better after software updates. However the stills from OP5 looked good that it made the OP5 worth it atleast at good lighting. Don't get me wrong, the Note 8 outputs are better but I guess it doesn't justify the price differences.

Oneplus 5 a potential collectors item in the future?

Hi All,
After learning that Oneplus were making the decision to announce and then launcher the (ok it's a nice phone) Oneplus 5T after just 5 months? I've never heard of that happen to a flagship which wasn't a complete failure and had as much going for it as the 5 does?
The Oneplus has pretty much disappeared from all locations where it was available, which means there can't be that many new devices out in the wild anymore if any at all, do you think if kept in decent condition that it could be something of a collectors item in the months / years to come? Maybe going a bit far with the collectors item thing but you know what i mean, like a niche piece of kit that you can't get hold of no more.
Just a thought, because unless people had the money or an upgrade in that time frame, it just wasn't going to be available and now it's gone?
Compared to the 3 and 3T the 5 and 5T are in a unique situation it's a slightly different form factor the finger print is on the front and it retains the capacitive non on screen buttons batterly life is every so slightly better than the 5T.
Everything else is the same so true I can definitely see a few anti 2:1 bezeless phone users prefer the one plus 5 form factor. Although i probably wouldn't go as far as to call it a collector's item. The main blemish on the OnePlus 5 is the jelly phone screen thing aside from that i can see a manufacturer offer both models and both selling reasonably well. With jelly phone screen i think it might skew to the newer phone, it doesn't bother me personally but I know there are people that see the affect all the time and that could get irritating. I on the other hand either don't see it or just got used to it.

Cellphones dont work like that. Even the legendary device of the HD2 only goes down in price.Phones are not something to collect as unlike others things they are already outdated by the time we get our hands on them.

They did the same thing with the 3 and the 3t. If any were gonna be collectable it will be the stars wars version or the other limited versions of the device and even then the price will still go down.
As for caliber of device. It is still a mid range device really. Nothing too special.

Point I'm making is, the release time was so small, now it's not being made no more, it's not even close to a year.
Any idea how many units were actually made?
A limited edition Zippo only has 250,000 made sometimes less, no how many they sold / made but it's definitely a niche phone now.
I would agree that cellphones don't work like that. When a new model is out, the previous one takes the "second hand status", in which people will be interested in, but only at a super low budget.
Then you have to keep in mind that OnePlus is an "unknown" brand. See all the reviews on specialist websites, all say it's so great but look around you, it's Samsung and Apple, cause people don't read that.
And if we think that OP phones are special for developpement community, also take a look at how people around us don't even change the default wallpaper that their phone had when they turned it on first time

Maybe we base out caliber of device on something completely different, I personally go by performance and stamina, along with a few other things.
The Oneplus is not mid range, the Snapdragon 600 series devices are mid range, the Oneplus is 100% high tier, price no but performance and hardware yes.

I agree, I'll not be getting the 6, it's HTC for me all day long from now on, unless something groundbreaking comes out, couldn't go for Sammy again, they're dead to me, their OS is just nasty now, doesn't even feel like android no more.
I know what you mean with their release timing, but I think they've overshot it here surely, 5 months? That's insane, and for a device which is over the mid range bracket at £507 with shipping? That's not cheap to only be told that in 5 months it can't be bought no more?

Yeah.
And to add to those thoughts, one might buy let's say a Samsung Note 8. It cost twice the price of the OP 5T, but you get the top of your brand of choice for a year. If you try to do that with One Plus phones, that will cost you more than that over the same period.
And your Samsung will probably still have a great resell value...
I like OP phones, but to me, they are really doing a terrible thing to their fans here.

Yes mid range. Price means nothing where I am. It's all about the hardware for me a day one plus is always missing g a few things to put them in the top tier.

lol ok so HTC who always make a flag ship device which is always has been comparable in price to Samsung ( I'm assuming that's what you're comparing it to) HTC usually misses a few features out, LG again top tier, again missing things not in others, can't see your point mate.
I know what you're getting at but I disagree wholeheartedly.
The oneplus is anything but a mid range device and in many ways it's superior to flagships like the S8
more ram
more internal memory
faster CPU and better utilisation of said chipset, better use of battery and stamina than the S8 /S8+
dual cameras
fastest charging on the market
Where is the oneplus falling short?
SD slot? water proofing ? stereo speakers ? None of those features makes a high end device.
All of the other OEMs are missing the same things, not to mention that Oneplus listens a lot more than the other OEMs.

it won't but the screen will evolve, the back of the phone had always been by majority unutilised, either way you can be sure that it'll never stay the same, things evolve or people get bored and even if we didn't, companies believe in evolving and ever changing so it'll happen in some way shape or form, hopefully for the better and not just for change.

Personally I want to change very little.about it, I'm rooted and have my normal rooted apps, adaway, titanium, 1 magisk module swap torpedo (kills the swap file, not needed for 6GB of RAM)
Other than that, the theme, the signal location, the camera, it's all pretty amazing.
I expected more from the battery but I can live with it.
The only thing I think that will annoy me is the lack of ROMs, but it's hurting a lot less than it did on other odd devices I've bought:

I think if Huawei would have flooded the globe with one variant with Google esq updates, it would have been one of those phones that alter a generation , kind of like the HD2 and Nexus devices did and Oneplus devices are.
Instead we've got several variants with a completely insane and i mean insane after market development scene, it's like everyone got the memo but me lol.

The battery is immense, and because I regularly have days with 8hrs plus SoT, it's a godsend.
I knew the camera was good, but it's better than I hoped, so much so that I got rid of my compact camera and my DSLR gets much less use these days.

Lack of US supports hurts. I really like the p20 pro but if the p30 pro next year doesn't support tmobile band 71 then this will be my last Huawei device.

8 hours? Not bad but consider if it was as well optimized as hear vanilla phones.
Oneplus 5 835 - No limits ROM. 14 hours 30 minutes.

I expected more from the battery but I can live with it.
The only thing I think that will annoy me is the lack of ROMs, but it's hurting a lot less than it did on other odd devices I've bought:

I think if Huawei would have flooded the globe with one variant with Google esq updates, it would have been one of those phones that alter a generation , kind of like the HD2 and Nexus devices did and Oneplus devices are.
Instead we've got several variants with a completely insane and i mean insane after market development scene, it's like everyone got the memo but me lol.

I'm quite into this phone apart from the complete lack of updates (I have the UK model)
I don't modify much these days unless I can't utilise the full screen because of onscreen navigation buttons but, luckily, this device has the perfect solution. [emoji3]
I must admit, I loved my HTC desire days....the customisations we could do then....Leedroid...my hero.

That decision was made for them by the US government. I am not sure what the whole story is behind it but no Carriers in the US want anything to do with Huawei now.
With carrier support and good advertising they could have made a decent splash in the US overtime.
Even if they support band 71 it's a tough sell to spend so much on a phone that won't have any US warranty backing.

All I know is, Oneplus have come and dominated.
They've provided for everyone.
Bootloader? So so easy.
Speed? The one thing parents and kids need when you hand your phone down to them.
Oneplus stands alone.
Huawei have the know how to be technically and globally dominant, but theyve missed out ingredients that matter.
I'll never buy another huawei, as much as I love it and I did I couldn't commit over £1,000 to a company that gives so much then breaks it with poor policies, awful selling tactics (models) and ridiculed hardware.
Maybe it'll be different one day but ive had this conversation before about a giant (HTC) and they never recovered,.
I'm curious to see how Huawei do next year, I have a feeling that they'll be reversing their decision very soon.
I just fear it'll be too late.
PS I really really wanted the p20 pro to succeed or even has suede hdmi via USB is superb.
They did swerve the bootloader decision and release a firmware for vanilla Android.
Completely blow every other phone out the water.

Yeah for people that like to tinker, oneplus is one of the best options. I just hope they keep improving the camera, o6 is a good start.
Yeah I don't know what Huawei was thinking with so many different varriants. Oneplus did it right they only have two hydrogen os for the Chinese market and oxygen for the rest. The hardware is the same as well.

The camera, battery, design, screen, storage space, are all far above my expectations. Well done huawei. I'm very glad I did the change from oneplus and Samsung.

I think op held back on the battery and going to improve it for o6t
Sold mine. The software update situation was just a joke and frustrated me more than the benefits the rest of the device brought to me.
Shame but learnt my lesson now. Pixel or OnePlus devices for me going forward.
I'm having mixed feelings about the device. I have bought it twice, as I wasn't happy, so I could compare and find out if the problem is the device or me.
So far, I'm very happy with build quality, usability, design, screen and functionality. The camera of my second device is better than the one of the first, but I'm struggling to get good battery life with both. 3 hours DOT, maybe four if I'm lucky. I think that's not really good, and as both devices behave like this, the problem must be me. Not really sure what I'm doing wrong, as even my old rusty iPhone 6 can give me 3 hours of DOT, so I expected a lot more in this aspect. Other than that, I really like this device.

The missing notifications from some apps is a problem, wish someone could do a guide about how to fix that

I switched from Samsung to p20 pro and thats the best ive ever done.
I love the p20 pro, its amazing, the screen, the smotheness, the SOT and so on.....

Black shark 3 is nice.
And there's a few other gaming phones coming this year.

Same here will never touch this brand again, still remember the day I went to the website to see if there were any upcoming update news only to be greeted by the RM3S I knew then I'd get no more updates.

I mean you can't be mad about not getting updates. It's a sub $500 phone. You get what you pay for. If you want updates you get a pixel and Nubia's track record on support and update is has been established as pretty much non existent.
I'm sure they would do some actual updates is they started selling these at that $600 price point. But then people would cry about how it's so expensive. Software development cost money. Nothing is free. Sucks they have the industrys worse software support but it's a sub $500 phone. You get what you pay for.

I more bothered the device isn't fit for purpose in some areas having to tweak a phone just to be able to have the names show up when getting a phone call amongst the main things I've had £250 phones that get the basics right.

Honestly, Nubia could have done better... After so much analysis, I went with RM3S knowing that there will be no updates...
No regrets with RM3S... It does what it is meant to be brought... If updates or features are provided, would be happy...
In built fan works like a charm which no other phone has it... I play CODM on high screen resolution and very high frame rate for couple of hours straight and had no issues... Dont know if other phones can do that... Personally I like ROG3...
If you want a daily driver, definitely RM3S is not the right phone... I agree for that... But for gaming, RM3S performs upto the mark..

Works like a charm? You might wanna do some actual testing. And use something that measures the actual soc's temps not some random temp. The RM3S shows 40c but the actual soc is at over 71c. Still running cool in terms of phones but it's very far off and the fan only does a 1c drop at full load. Honestly more then I thought it would since fans require heatsinks to remove heat.

But what about Xiaomi,Realme and ViVo then ?
Nubia has opted for a bad business model,they should better focus on creating a loyal userbase,instead of releasing one device after another without aftermarket support.
OnePlus would've never been such a big player in the smartphone league if they acted the same as Nubia......

You get more value with them. I never said Nubia was a good value. Just you have to go in knowing you won't get updates. Just like when I buy a Samsung phone I know I'll be atleast 9 months behind before I get an Android upgrade. Samsung has gotten better but I still go in knowing updates and slow down again. If I want fast updates I go with a Pixel. But Samsung beat Google on a security patch but still. I buy a Nubia phone I'm buying it as is. If it gets an update great. If not it's a sub $500 phone you get what tyou pay for. $500 is not a lot.

Bro... not sure what is the issue with your device... I play straight couple of hours of CODM with High Graphics and Very High Frame Rate and I still get the same performance as I got at the first minute... to me, it works like a charm... It does serve my purpose of a gaming phone... I am not a fan-boy btw, I still regret my decision against ROG 2 (it was available only via flash sales in my region)... Still I need to give the due share it owes..

But my point is that some other brands can offer the same hardware specs with much better software support @ the same price point.
So it's not a case of getting what we paid for,but we paid for the wrong brand...
Sure,software developement costs money,but how hard can it be to extend software support for an almost vanilla Android version ?Or keeping security patches up to date ?
And if you don't wanna go that route as manufacturer,let the community do it by making it much easier to install custom ROM's,instead of blocking that option.
It will only benefit your company,as your brand will get more popular....

$500-$600 is the price every survey shows people will pay for a phone. It's not a lot.
You have trade offs you can't get it all unless you pay for it. You want better hardware you sacrifice quality and support. Want better quality and support you sacrifice hardware specs. Want both you have to pay to play. The most popular devices are well over $1,000 and these devices in the US outsell the sub $500 devices by a large number.

OK,it seems that you refuse to accept that some types of the 3 brands I posted earlier provide better software support than Nubia,while having about the same hardware specs.......I'm NOT comparing +$1000 devices against Nubia's stuff,so I have no idea why you keep insisting on those kind of statements.
Or perhaps my previous posts were not clear enough.......

loud and clear to me and I fully agree, we never thought we were getting a 1000 phone for 500 we brought it thinking it would be on par with 500 phones that weren't released yet and now for me at least once again have learnt I should of waited although I do have plenty of content planned for my blog and what not I mean they haven't even delt with issues that a basic phone gets right

I'm really tempted to get the red magic 5g.. the specs on paper are perfect and everything I want in a phone. It looks nice too. However reading this thread is making me wonder if I should just get a black shark 3 or realme x50 pro instead.. is Nubia/red magic that bad?

that's where they got my looks good on paper everything I want in a phone but reality isn't as good for these phones I held off and brought the camo version with the larger storage amongst a few other things and they seem to release phones instead of updates for there current line up software/rom updates I sort of figured would be lacking but security patches have been neglected since the release of the RM3S so I'd steer clear and go with literally anything else your considering choose red magic and you'll be disappointed

Is it really that bad?
I considered the black shark 3, but it's pretty much inferior in almost every way, at least on paper. Only 90hz, it's thicker, the battery is bigger but it's dual cell, single cell is better, looks ugly in comparison, only 30w charging and lpddr4x or whatever it's called for base model unless you pay a premium etc.
The other phone I was considering is the realme x50 pro.. almost perfect for me, EXCEPT the dual camera punch hole in the screen.. way too big. If it was just a small single punch hole it would have been perfect. Or if it had a pop up selfie camera instead. Not 120hz but I could live with 90hz if everything else was good. It's a good looking phone and has a flat screen at least. Good screen to body ratio, but battery is a bit smaller (should be fine since it has a smaller screen too).
The black shark 3 pro got delayed till the 27th. I can live with that I guess but it's still kinda ugly looking imo. A little expensive too but I can also live with that. Nice physical triggers. Only 90hz but it's 1440p and comes with a memc chip and 270hz touch sampling so I can live with that. I'm worried about how big this phone is though.
The red magic 5g checks all my boxes unless it has poor software and reliability like everyone has said about their previous phones. 144hz, and way better looking than the black shark phones. A little slimmer than the black shark 3. The IC frame compensation thing looked cool.
