Are there any posibilities that we can run Windows xp on the tablet some day?
i've seen a video that runs ubuntu, i dont want to see the word "ubuntu" in this whole thread please, thanks.
if there are possibilities.. how can we start, should i make a facebook page where we all manifest our feelings?
Reason in my case: i have some especial software that only run on windows xp, and also a couple of games specially Ragnarok Online (private server) that i play.
What I'd be a lot more interested in is a version of wine running on the Tab, either directly (which seems rather unlikely) or inside that brilliant OS that you don't want mentioned.
I wouldnt use windows xp to use any internet browser
because i'm sick of the Spyware/Malware BS! but some software would be nice like:
GRAPHICAL ftp client, DreamWeaver, Macromedia Flash, Notepad ++

None whatsoever!
Tab is ARM based, not x86 based. The only "hope" would be an VM, but even if someone could be bothered, performance would likely be dreadful.
Ubuntu is open source and has been ported to ARM.

I had a 7inch tablet running windows xp. the tablet was great, the software was something that stiil seek me in my nightmare.
Now I'm trying to put android in it.
Simply put. windows xp wasn't and will not be a tablet os. Ever.

Ubuntu! Oh I'm sorry your majesty, I'll get to work on an arm version of windows xp right away.
You could use a remote desktop client to connect to a windows xp machine. There is absolutely no way to run windows xp natively and there never will be.

sup atomix. As everyone else already stated the GT's cpu is arm based, hence no native winders.
However rdp/vnc/cloud connections to both real and virtual windows machine is definitely doable.
I saw an interesting article in Engadget the other day. Looks like onlive will be serving up their cloud based gaming with a side of windows 7. Maybe this will be helpful for you.

tried ubuntu on the tab and runs extremely slugish, i'ts out of the question..

i said TABLET not netbook, i already have a dell 10v but is way too bulky to take back and forth from city to city
the tab i need, needs to be the closest to the galaxy tab 7" or smaller display size
with at least 5hrs of battery, open a resolution of 1024px width

As an ahead, please, no OS bashing. I would just like to know how many of you use linux as your day to day OS. Me, I've used just about everything out there, but these days I've settled on Ubuntu. It has worked perfectly for me for years, so I stay with it. You?

Yeah, using just about any distro with openbox is usually fast.

I mainly use Ubuntu for almost everything. For gaming, I use Windows 7.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and trying to get used to Unity... I think they made big mistake by removing Classic desktop and forcing Unity. Probably I'll change distro soon.
Ubuntu is my main OS for years.
I used to use Kubuntu as my OS because I like the way it works, its really stable and fast and using less resources then Windows 7, I tried the recent Opensuse 12.1 version and Kubuntu version, they are both good.
But because I don't wish to dual boot and I need Windows 7 for playing games like cod I'm right now using Windows 7 and that is mainly because one application called QQ which doesnt have video chat in Linux and of course I got the resources for running a virtual Windows xp for that app, but I think its not worth it.
But if games and that app where working then I would use Linux as my main os, but I also have an legal license off Windows 7 home premium and I consider Windows 7 as an very good operating system so in fact I like using it because it works good.
But i'm for sure not going use Windows 8, right now I consider Windows 7 stable and fast ( I got an SSD ) but I guess if I didnt need use QQ that then when I quit gaming that I could use Linux, but its because my gf, I need to adjust to her and webQQ is troublesome with video chat.

Gnome classic is back with Ubuntu 12.04
Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell.
I use arch, windows just for play games here
Triple booting windows 8 consumer preview, mountain lion, and Ubuntu 12.04.
I use lion the most (for school) then windows for gaming, and Ubuntu when windows upsets me (which it hasn't lately) windows 8 is pretty nice

Also if you are a Gamer, YES, Linux does work with Windows Games, it's not plug and play easy as on Windows, but is getting there, just install Wine, or your favourite Emulator for whatever you need to get the game running.
You also got the free virtual box, so you can run technically anything you want in your Linux box
very few games lik only those annoying MMORPG that have security anti hacking protection, will require to be installed in a virtual Windows, as they are not able to compatible in Linux

Not me... i dual boot windows 7 x64 and ubuntu
Gonna build a HTPC. Netflix, Watching downloaded tv shows/ movies. Internet browsing. Could use it for rooting phones and what not. Hosting the odin/sbf/what ever fliles that kinda thing. Would be cool if I could set up a server type stuff so other computers can see the data and If i could see it on stuff like a cloud server would be a plus.
I don't know a ton about pc specs. AMD vs intel. stuff like that. I don't need some powerhouse here for what Im doing.
I'd like to keep it on the cheaper end, but good performing and reliable.. Maybe a barebones kit for the processor, box, power supply and stuff then buy the rest on its own.
Go Windows based or linux based? Did they find a more simple way to watch netflix on linux yet? last I heard you had to install a few patches find old silverlight and firefox or something.
Obviously HD compacity depends on what/ how much I download. But any brands to stay away from? Any specs I should look at?
Worth it to put a ssd in for the operating system then run a conventional drive for the storage? Will that help with reliability assuming that the drive wouldn't be spinning while I'm browsing/watching netflix and or the system is sleeping/standby?
Minimum amount of ram?
What do I need to look for in video card? AMD or Nivida work with linux? It would be nice to have it be able to work as a dvr if it won't require me to bump up processor specs a whole lot ($$ only worth it if the price is right)

I was told one of the brands of video cards didn't work well. something about the drivers.
Also Netflix requires silverlite to stream and that is something that is missing from linux. But I do have a ps3 so netflix streaming isn't a must at this point as I can just use that.. It would just be nice to have a all in one unit

On the Indiegogo page for the Ubuntu Edge, you can see a video of a proof of concept for the Ubuntu Desktop.
She used an app on a stock Nexus 4 (if I remember correctly, she says AOSP) and just launch it like that on Android and sent it to the screen.
Am I the only one who find this more amazing than running Ubuntu Touch on a Android phone ?
If you take a look at the size of the ARM Ubuntu version, you have a 500 MB file and I was wondering how Android can just load like that Ubuntu and run it along Android ?

As you point out, the video demonstrates a fully functional version of Ubuntu for Android. In the IRC channel, Ubuntu VP of engineering stated that U4A requires the Android OS to be modified slightly. I'm hopeful this process is unveiled soon and U4A becomes publicly available. It likely won't be very smooth on current commercially available hardware, and there's not really enough storage on an N4 to make it very practical, but it would still be nice to get a glimpse of computing convergence.

It seems pretty smooth on the video, which is surprising when you know the current hardware limitation on Android ...
For the storage, the cloud allows you to only download the file you need so it might not really be a problem.
I'm currently thinking about building a NAS to use it as a storage and download platform, it might be a custom solution for this problem.
Another option is my linuxonandroid project, see it as ubuntu for android but with just a one man team doing it in the spare time
Big plus side is we support a range of distros and are not limiting to Ubuntu

Also note that the nexus 4 is a device I use and our up and coming LoA ROM will be on the Nexus 4 before you know it
The ROMs aim is to basicly do everything Ubuntu for Android can do and more!

It must require a lot of RAM no ?
Something nice in their video is the share of data between the two OS (mail, contact, music, etc). Is it possible to do that when you do a VM ?

Just like my project they do not use a VM, they use native Chroot, which allows Linux to run on the Android kernel from within Android.
SO you get normal access to hardware and kernel features and no performance hit.
Then for the sharing its a mixture of both OS's having access to the same storage so music and files are viewable from both.
For app data shared acrossed it simply requires so work to pass this across from one side to another, something that could be done pretty easy and I have started working on myself

Currently its just 12.04 on Ubuntus side as we aimed to make alot of changes for our 13 release, but its coming
So the app gives directions on how to VNC into the linux system, but I want to connect my nexus 4 to a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and a monitor using the SlimPort adapter as seen in the Ubuntu Edge U4A video. Do you have or know of any directions on how this can be accomplished with Complete Linux Installer?

I have a rooted Nexus 4 with sock jelly bean on it. I have played with installing Ubuntu Phone on it a few months back, but went back to android as I felt extremely limited in Ubuntu Phone.
I have the SlimPort® SP1002 from Amazon coming today. As I said before I would love to run it without the lag of VNC. Convergence is my main goal and I am so excited about Edge, but I want the Ubuntu for Android app for my Nexus 4 that I saw Leann talk about being already ready toady. Any idea of where/when we can get it?

So now that the Ubuntu Edge campaign has failed, if/when do you think they will release Ubuntu for Android? I am going to get the new Nexus (Nexus 5?) and hopefully they will have it released for that phone.

Root isn't specific to android but I'm not sure how the actual process will work... I'd imagine it requires a jtag.

connecting a jtag port isn't difficult, the chromecast is only $35 too if something goes wrong. I'm hoping that the usb can function as a usb hub if it is hacked via jtag, if so then maybe we'll get a proper android rom and maybe a linux distribution.

So if it has the NDK we can run the XBMC app and still have the chrome cast system run in the background and have the best of both worlds. Awesomesauce.
It makes sense that it runs Android, it's a real OS that can run apps unlike Chrome OS. However, it would not make sense to call it Android as Android is a religion that is polarizing. No diehard Apple fan or even casual iPhone user would be caught dead with an Android device.
Chrome, on the other hand, is agnostic and works across platforms.
The name choice was political.

Chrome OS as found on a Chromebook has a few apps like a video player, they are mostly offline versions of webapps, but still standalone apps.

Define app.
I have a rdp app on my chromebook that I can use on networks without internet perfectly fine. My text editing app works smoothly even without network. The ssh client works well too.
And, unlike android, with dev mode enabled I can run any gnu/Linux app I want without installing a second os in a chroot.
I personally prefer chrome os over android. Having a real Linux os tends to come in handy.

So apparently the os is based on android, but with dalvik and everything else replaced by a chrome binary.
So, its android, but its not android at all (no android app will ever run on it without replacing the os with android)
