flash recovery issue - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having a weird issue that I have not been able to fix it. The only custom recovery that works with my device is twrp 2.6.3.3.
I flashed the newer versions of twrp and the latest version of cwm for m7 - it flashes successfully (no error during flashing), but when trying to enter recovery, it gets stuck at "entering recovery" screen (restart recovery-->shows up the "entering recovery" screen-->for one secong the screen goes black --> goes back to htc splash with "entering recovery" message)
also, the factory recovery WORKS.
I tried:
- fastboot erase cache - reflash recovery
- factory reset - fastboot erase cache - flashed recovery
- I even downgraded the software version: wiped all the phone, including internal storage; flashed twrp 2.6.3.3 - adb loaded 4.19.401.11 stock - flashed factory recovery - updated the official OTAs back to 6.09.401.5
nothing helped.

If anyone has some idea why this happens or can give me some new ideas to try, please let me know

Not sure why but I'd stick with 2.6.3.3. It is nice and stable. Newer isn't always better

did you try out the latest Unofficial TWRP 2.7.1.2? im using it and havent looked back, works execelent (at least for me)

yes, I tried that - no luck :/
thanks though

it has to do something with not wiping the cache after flashing the recovery ... I think
after every failed twrp2.7xx or latest cwm flash , I need to flash the 2.6.3.3 version that works flawlessly.
what i notice right away, is that whatever i try to do in there, i m getting E:Unable to mount '/cache'
wipe--advanced--select cache--wipe works though and after that everything is ok in 2.6.3.3
i tried fastboot erase cache, did`t make any difference
i´m pretty much out of ideas...

You will always get unable to mount cache in recovery after you do a fastboot erase cache. Have you been using that command after you flash the recovery? I just noticed you've been doing that before you flash it. You should flash the recovery. Then erase cache

thanks a lot for the info.
I will give it another go. I tried via flashify as well - same outcome

still no success. I even ruu-ed it til the ver. 1.19.xx.xx and gradually used the official ota to update to 6.09.401.5. same issue, it says that flashed successfully, but doesn't enter recovery ; staying stucj at the htc splash page with ^entering recovery ^ text. I'm out of ideas, using sense roms anyway. it's just that it drives me kookoo not knowing why this is happening ??

Have you tried 2.8.0.1?

Also: You may have to take everything back to factory. Turn s on if off. Relock bootloader. Run RUU. Enter factory recovery and perform factory reset. Unlock bootloader, Flash TWRP, and root.

Major problem is that computer cannot detect my phone and the somehow my OS got deleted, in order to get RUU i cannot find the main version as it shows blank. I also tried adb push a custom carbon rom and zip install through twrp but it shows error. I dont know what to do...!!! Kindly help anyone.

Wow, sounds like a headache! If I understand you, the problem may have started when you tried to install a .zip from HTC (a.k.a., RUU), instead of a custom ROM packaged as a .zip? (The formatting is very different, and I don't know what CWM/TWRP will do when given the wrong type.) Does this sound right? If so:
When the phone is booted into TWRP, can the computer detect it with "adb devices"? (You need to install the appropriate drivers, and install ADB, and run it properly so it doesn't just say "command not found".)
If I misunderstood your problem, have you tried using TWRP to back up your data, wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, then reboot and wait 5 minutes for the phone to boot the first time?

Ya it happened something like that.
When the phone is booted into TWRP and by adb devices command I get the below
C:\fastboot>adb devices
List of devices attached
I have tried backingup by TWRP adn wiped data cache dalvik cache and reboot, but it gets rebooting into recovery
Computer doent detect the sdcard, TWRP shows no OS!
I tried ADB sideload to install custom rom but it shows error..

Seems like maybe you don't have the right drivers. Your phone isn't being detected. No ADB stuff (push or sideload) will work until you sort that out. (I don't use Windows, so I can't help much when it comes to driver info.)

1- edit your post and remove IMEI, you shouldn't share that information publicly!!
2- then:
get TWRP from:
2.6.3.3: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
or 2.6.3.4: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7ul
(make sure MD5 is correct, that site does not play nice with download managers)
2.7.0.4b: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708134
in bootloader/FASTBOOT USB:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
enter recovery, now trwp, if adb devices doesn't show your phone, then go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52135024&postcount=2
and fix Windows Device Manager as mentioned in FAQ#2, then you can continue.

If I am following you correctly these are the steps you took:
First you flashed the firmware. Which firmware did you flash?
Then you unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom recovery. Which recovery?
Then you restored the nandroid from the post. Did you select root after the nandroid installed?
Then you cleared cache? Why?

I think the firmware you are using is not a compete package, generally firmware removed from OTA don't have all of the elements just those needed to run the OTA. Get a .401 stock firmware from this Placeholder of HTC One Firmwares.

Hello, i'm sorry i don't know what to say because i have almost the same problem, my htc one m7_UL won't start...is shutsdown sometimes at boot time, when i take photos with it...and sometimes what ever else, but in recovery mode it can still houers and houers. yesterday i brought it to s-off then i installed an RUU...but still the same problem !!! is it a material issue ??? thank you.
Within TWRP you should wipe data (not custom) to recreate data, system, and etc. folders. This will also wipe whats on you sdcard so, you'll have to adb push new files to your sdcard to flash a rom.

[Q] How to restore original ROM from CM11

Hi,
I am running CM 11 on my M7 (rooted, usb debugging on,S-On). Question is how to restore original ROM on the same phone. I tried Guru_Reset_M7_5.12.502.2_clsA but phone goes in bootloop.

Guru reset posted by @clsA should work. What recovery are you using to flash it? Did you check MD5? The nandroid should also do the job but this will not flash stock recovery back like the reset rom. If you want to restore the nandroid backup instead of using the reset rom, you could extract the recovery from cIsA's reset rom and flash it after restoring the backup. Stock recovery for your version is also available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227

The only reason you would get a bootloop is by using an old recovery ...update to TWRP 2.6.3.3 and your be fine.
Someone in the thread also suggested a factory reset after restoring the nandroid.

You pretty well covered it ... I'm betting on an old version of CWM or TWRP was the problem.

I am facing issues with adb in older versions of TWRP. (tried on two systems)
I couldn't find the md5 at the download location. Also during installation I tried with and without stock recovery, with and without wipe, with and without radio but no luck. I am facing bootloop issues even after nandroid restore (from my original post). In both cases of guru reset and nandroid restore I do perform factory reset.
As a matter of fact I have never been able to install any ROM other than CM11 after the phone crashed last week. (ClsaA might actually remember me by now since I am troubling him/her since last week

Then you might want to downgrade to 2.6.3.3... worth a try...
MD5 of the reset rom: 3b4013265e9134bc6916cf3c5fd14406
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then try the reset rom again.

@alray.. I am going to try that but last time I tried I wasn't able to use adb. On upgrading to current version I was able to use adb so I guess it may not be drivers issue since at least one version of twrp worked.
I downloaded from here and it has the md5 you mentioned

I do remember, But I'm a little distracted, i got an M8 last night
got the sim card for it today (damn nano sim) and have been doing s-off and all the updates tonight.
Luckly most everything i have learned with the M7 transfers over to the M8 (just a bunch of new files to download )

LOL.. I got my M8 last Friday. Trying to stay away from S-Off until M7 issues are solved. Once M7 is off the hook then M8 is next. Please post the ROM asap so that I can start playing. I am in software testing so I can't wait for long

well you only need adb to push the rom to your phone once! If you flash twrp 2.6.3.3, the rom will still be on your /sdcard so you'll only need to install it from recovery, no adb required.

@alray and @clsA.. well none of the above worked. I also tried Arhd 81 but still getting bootloop. I also tried flashing ElementalX kernel sheer out of frustration but got bootloop again. Looks like the only thing that's working stable is CM nightly builds. I also tried S-Off while CM was running with Rumrunner and firewwater but as usual no luck. I REALLY need to get this device back to original rom ( I don't care even if I need to go back all the way to 4.3,4.2 if it's easier to upgrade from there. Please please advise.

So you have
wiped everything + format data using your first recovery
then you have pushed arhd 81 to your phone
flashed twrp 2.6.3.3
erased fastboot cache
rebooted bootloader
rebooted in recovery mode (2.6.3.3)
installed the rom
and it still bootlooping?
You also have checked MD5 sum of twrp 2.6.3.3 and ARHD 81 before flashing?
@alray.. I just now tried again with exact same steps in sequence flashing arhd 81 installation failed (when it finished it said set metadata recursive and that some permissions failed. Then it keeped going in a bootloop). I tried flashing CM11 nightly build of 10/19 with gapps and it worked like a charm. I have no idea why only CM is able to get installed and rest others are failing.
PS: I don't NEED to get ahrd working on the phone. My ultimate goal is to get 4.4 running on M7. Do you think downgrading hboot can help since there are lots of posts that talk about downgrading it.
And for now I am downloading Google play edition of arhd and going to give it a try. (Pretty soon I am going to announce a prize for whoever gets my phone working )

@alray.. so you suggest I stick to twrp 2.6.3.3 and install guru reset again? I guess best way is to copy guru reset while CM11 is running. Then flash 2.6.3.3 and install guru reset (of course after cache clear etc.) ?

yes its mandatory to use 2.6.3.3 for ARHD !
So yes you can transfer your rom to your phone storage (/sdcard) while on CM11 if its easier for you
then flash twrp 2.6.3.3 (not 2.6.3.0 nor 2.7.+ nor 2.8+, only 2.6.3.3!!)
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then reboot in twrp recovery and confirm your version is now 2.6.3.3
select "install" then your ARHD zip and swipe to flash!
I also assume that you already have checked MD5 on all your downloads (TWRP image and ARHD zip?) to confirm that they are not corrupted?

I see like 4 or 5 simlink errors
Pretty meaningless.
The guru reset installs and updates are still untested ( no updates from AT&T)
I don't remember everything you have tried. But do the factory reset again from the stock recovery. Flash the 5.x.502 firmware again see what happens
@clsA If I use a non-working SIM card uring flashing or install then will it be a problem. I got a new SIM card with my new M8 and the one in M7 is deactivated. ( I guess it won't make much difference)_.

[Q] HTC One M7 - stuck on TWRP

I successfully rooted my phone using this tutorial:
http://htconeroot.com/htc-one-root/how-to-root-htc-one-windowsmaclinux/
Then I tried to install a different ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
Now it won't boot past Teamwin. I can transfer from my Mac to the phone, but whenever I try to roll back the ROM it all looks like it's worked. Then I go to reboot, it resets and takes me straight back to teamwin.
I followed all the tutorials exactly and now I have no phone....
Please help!

The recovery is TWRP v2.6.3.0
I just tried to boot into v2.8.6.0 and it seemed to get to the phone, but when I booted into recovery from fastboot it came up with a red 'Failed' on TWRP and then rebooted into v2.6.3.0
Recovery is your problem. Try again to flash 2.8.6.0 , don't just boot from it. Flash it , then erase catch and see how it goes. U need to boot success fully in 2.8.6.0
---------- Post added at 06:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 AM ----------
Also try using a windows computer , that also can be a problem.

Yes, I mean flash, I think I'm getting my terminology mixed up when I write on here.
With the phone in FASTBOOT, I am using this on the Terminal; ./fastboot-mac flash recovery twrp-2.8.6.0-m7.img
Which results in:
sending 'recovery' (12066 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.575s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.883s]
finished. total time: 2.459s
Then: ./fastboot-mac erase cache
....Ok now I'm on v2.8.6.0....
What should I do next? Try flashing a ROM?

One last thing, what is the best way to back this up now? so if I run into a similar problem again I can just revert back to this. Being able to copy the backup or backing up to a computer would be preferable. I did a backup to my phone and it wasn't there when I ran into trouble

[Q] HTC M7 can not get to start recovery

Hi,
I did searched the forums first to look for similar problems, but couldn't find exact problems, hence I started this thread. If by any chance I have missed it then I do apologise.
Here goes...
I have a HTC ONE M7 running 4.4.2 viper one rom, bootloader 1.54.0000 S-OFF
Problem:
I can boot the phone into bootloader menu, but I can not start the recovery. It gives an red triangle error logo stays there for a while and then reboots normally.
I have downloaded TWRP, and used fast boot command to erase cache and flashed twrp-2.6.3.3. Tried to get into recovery again, it said Entering Recovery on top of the screen and then went into a restarting loop.
what I would like to do here is to successfully flash a custom rom but for that as far as I can understand I have to enter recovery which I am failing.
In TWRP app it says recovery has been installed but I still couldn't enter the recovery mode.
Please suggest if there is any way that I can just erase the current rom and flash it with a custom rom or a NAND backup of another htc one m7 vanilla rom.
Thanks in advance hope to have a solution soon.

If you really want to flash RUU, you MUST NOT unzip it. You can also download TWRP for Sprint and flash it via recovery. After that choose your ROM, download it, transfer the ROM.zip to your phone using MTP option in custom recovery, and flash away

well if your goal is to flash a custom recovery and then a custom rom, this file won't help. Download latest twrp for sprint variant then flash it to your phone:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-m7wls.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then boot in TWRP and flash the custom your youd like (must be a sprint rom from the sprint section)
Also remove your IMEI, MEID and SN from post #3. You want to keep these 3 numbers for yourself.

O.k. I rebooted into TWRP successfully, downloaded this file from the link Guru_Reset_M7_Sprint_1.31.651.2
copied it to the root directory of the phone, flashed it, everything went well with no errors whatsoever, rebooted the phone it started fine showed me the home screen wallpaper but the screen was locked and the touch was not working, so I rebooted the phone, this time its only showing me the notification bar on top and the rest of the screen is blank, and the phone restarts on its own. Any advise please.

And why did you flashed this rom? You were telling us at post 1 that you want a custom rom/vanilla rom so why using an old stock rom? This rom is only for resetting your phone to the 1.31.651.2 software version which is not the right version for your phone (look at your getvar)
So what is your goal? You want to flash a custom rom or you want to go back to stock rom??

ok maybe I failed to explained myself but if you see I did said that in my very first post that its either custom rom or stock rom I just want to make it fully work.
If you can please point me to the correct rom link do not mind if its custom or stock as long as it fully works I will appreciate it. Because its a long list I got confused and made this mess, sorry about that.
