[Q] How to update firmware after root.

Hey guys,
My question is, How can i update the firmware of my phone if i am rooted. And if possible please mention how the method would differ if i was
1) just bootloader unlocked
2) S-OFF

you need to be on stock recovery to get ota if you are rooted

If just bootloader unlocked, you cant update the firmware nearly as easily with s-off (or maybe at all, im not sure) but definitely checking Mikes Firmware thread under Android Dev, and S-off Revone thread under Original Android Dev will help. Also, if you are superCID (which you should be and should do so if youre not) here are the instructions for updating FW while soff+superCID (attached as picture) and i can verify i have followed these steps myself and they work. Hope i helped. If not, ask more!

yes. You need to be on stock recovery to get the OTA applied

I just download latest firmware from - http://www.sammobile.com
Then I flash it to phone and then flash the recory again.

Assuming you are familiar with adv and fastboot and they are installed on your pc.
With phone in fastboot usb (connected to pc, ideally usb 2 and win 7)
If S off
Procedure for S off
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip name_of_firmware.zip
Then repeat above command as directed.
then
fastboot reboot-bootloader
All done !

If S on
then your cid and mid must exactly match those of firmware.
and your bootloader must be locked
Use
fastboot oem lock
Then follow procedure for S off as above

android update after rooting
hi all,
I have Sony Xperia C6602
i rooted my phone using "towelroot" sometime back. it was working great for me so far. now i receive this OTA update message for 10.5.1.A.0.283 (i guess its android 4.4.4). I've read at many places about updating a rooted phone, and found below mentioned instances:
1-you will loose your root, and will go back to normal boring unrooted (but updated version) of your android
2-you will brick your phone
3-you will loose all your data
now i'm not sure i should go for this automatic update. don't know that much about android. please suggest anyone what will happen to my phone if i update it by default processes. also, let me know about the best way to do this.
also, lets say i update the phone and loose my root, but phone stays well. will i be able to root back again using towelroot just like previous time?

You are in the wrong forum, you might try the Sony Xperia C forum.

I'm on the Rogers network, and ever since I updated to 4.4 KitKat (Stock), my data isn't working. Wondering how I could fix this problem. BTW I have super CID does that make a difference ?

Stock? stock sense or stock gpe?
No, CID normally only affects update capabilities... but to ensure that doesn't affect your data just turn it back to stock....

@LibertyMarine I changed my CID to ROGER001. S-OFF, bootloader is RELOCKED. When you get a phone fresh out of the box is S-ON or Off

out of the box it is S ON but pls don't go S ON... STAY S OFF!!!!! This doesn't affect data or something similar!!!! If you go back s on you'll most likely get a bricked device!!!
Do you get connection to your carriers network? Can you phone and send text messages? is data the only thing not working?
I recommand gettting a unlocked bootloader again... so we can flash a ROM and find out if your error is ROM related...

@LibertyMarine Yes, I am being able to send text messages, and make phone calls. How am I supposed to unlock again and flash ROM ? Before this I was on the Google Play Edition and I switched to Sense 4.4 using Super CID and HBOOT 1.44 and International developer edition RUU

I think you are able to unlock using the unlock_token from HTCdev or since you are s off... this here might help you:
(forget about the s off part.... you would have to be rooted... and to do this you'll lose your data too)
So yes.. you'll lose all data when unlocking with your unlock token from HTCdev...
And then you can install your custom recovery... and copy your rom to your phone and then flash it... try if the connection works... if it doesn't a matching firmware package may help you:

by data I presume you mean data network?
might be dumb question, but have you checked your APNs (settings>mobile data>access point names) to check they are correct for your carrier?

Do you have ltemobile.apn as your APN setting. Try appl1-core APN as well. A quick Google search will tell you the exact syntax

I talked to Rogers again and they wanted to warranty the phone but after I pressed a bit she gave me the APN setting (similar to yours):
rogers-core-appl1.apn
which mostly fixed the problem in that I had data 3G and HSPA but no LTE.
I came back here to report this partial victory and based on your post have now added:
ltemobile.apn
And LTE is restored!

Can I update to Another virsion than the AT&T but still stock ?

How to install an OTA update is posted all over the forums
you need stock recovery and a unaltered system
your still on 4.1.2 have you s-off yet ? you need to do that first.
after your s-off flash the AT&T RUU I posted in the link I already gave you.
then flash the 4.4.2 update followed by the sense 6 update.

S-off and Hboot 1.60

Is there any to S-off with 1.60?
I'm attempting to unlock the sim for gsm as a final goal...

Make sure the rom you are on is as close to stock as possible.
Downgrading to a KK rom = yes
Downgrading firmware = no
Easiest way to run Sunshine is to RUU.

I tried it right after reinstalling the 6.16 RUU and it did not fly.
I can't remember if I was rooted at the time (yesterday)

Unless something changed in v3.0 of Sunshine you don't have to be rooted or unlocked.

This is what i have now. The copy I downloaded did not have a date or version.
It should work on this 5.02 RUU?

The Sunshine apk should look for updates before it begins.
You cannot use the 5.02 RUU because you are s-on.
Have you tried going to their IRC channel to see if they can guide you?

Thanks for your help.
I'm not a Sprint customer and never have been and it's been a while since I have had an HTC product.
My problems would be solved if I could downgrade the firmware, I did install a unsecured Kernel but it did not matter.

I first tried stock and went from there, it's been a no go through all the changes.

The Sunshine apk I tried to use was not new enough.
The later version worked.
Now to sim unlock it, any ideas for doing this on this rom version?

Most of that is really old and no longer works (so far)

Use the most recent sprint ruu to return to stock
I just went through this yesterday. I was having the same problem.
I'm on sprint so my solution should apply.
1. Return to stock with the sprint Lollipop ruu
2. Get unlock from htcdev - - > unlock your bootloader
3. Flash the latest version of twrp
4. Boot into twrp, then reboot system.
4a. Twrp should prompt you to install su and obtain root
4b. Let twrp root your system.
5. Let the phone complete the su install via twrp
6. Get sunshine s-off
7. Pay $25
8. Enjoy s-off

I was able to reach the hidden screen and select the "sim lock" but backing out and rebooting from the sim unlock helper screen did not work.
I had to select "reboot" from the same menu located just a couple of items up from the Sim lock selection. Make sure "Data" is on and GSM is selected.
I was successful only on the "Viper 1.0.0 rom.
I now have a working T-mobile connection..

I have bought a htc m8 sprint version mobile that is rooted to unlock sim. Its working fine with GSM sim.
Now i want to install Marshmallow into it. Is it possible to install official RUU_M8_WHL_M60_SENSE70_SPCS_MR_Sprint_WWE_6.20.651.3.exe
this release of Marshmallow at its current state? Means the rooted state. How could i install the official version? will it lock the device again for SIM?
Please guide me for the scenario.

You will have to manually install the firmware 6.20.651.x twice before using the ruu.exe or you can update OTA if you have stock rom and recovery.

Where did i find the rom? Didn't anybody do the update? HTC says " If your Bootloader or device software has been modified, you may run the risk of damaging your device by installing the RUU."

Someone says "When you try this your mobile may be moved to locked".
That's what i am worried about. And if it is locked again, then how to unlock again?
Didn't find any content about unlocking HTC M8 sprint with marshmallow installed.

Sim Unlocking marshmallow currently requires you to downgrade to kitkat or jellybean and you will need SOFF to do that.
