Greetings, folks. I have a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook from Barnes & Noble that now refuses to talk to two separate computers (both running Windows 7). Yesterday, I turned on the second computer (which had been off for at least 2 weeks and therefore had not received any new Windows updates in that time) and hooked up the Nook, and that computer recognized it and installed the drivers. That computer stayed up and running overnight, as did my main computer (which had been refusing to talk to the Nook all day yesterday).
Today, the Nook is not recognized by either computer. The device driver will start to install, and then comes the error message.
Can anyone suggest what might be causing this problem, and which of those Windows updates might have been the culprit? Thanks!
I tried to post screencaps of the device installation error message, as well as the recent Windows Update history, but I am quite new to this forum and thus am not allowed to post links. Thus, I beg your patience, and send those interested to the Photobucket album where I have posted those screencaps. You'll have to translate this into a proper URL yourselves. Sorry.

P.S. I also have a Samsung Galaxy phone; when I plug it in to the computer, the device driver DOES install, and appears as "Samsung Android ADB interface," and I get the popup box that asks what I want to do (open folder, look at pictures, play music, etc). When I unplug the phone, that device disappears from Device Manager. When I plug the tablet back in, I get a "Samsung Mobile USB Composite Device" with the yellow triangle, and the Nook does not appear in "My Computer."
Problem solved!
I also posted the query on one of the Barnes and Noble support forums, and somebody came back with a suggestion which, lo and behold, actually WORKED. I am copying and pasting it here in case someone else is having a similar issue:
"I would go into device manager and delete the Nook entry. I would then re-plug in the Nook and see if Windows finds it and installs drivers. If it doesn't, then I would rescan for hardware changes while in device manager with the Nook attached.
(Also make sure USB is enabled in the Nook (Android) settings first.)"
Y'all have a fabulous day.

Hey Guys,
I am having a vexing problem with my rooted NC. All of a sudden, after 5 great days of rooted goodness my NC will not sync up with my PC at all, not as itself or as a mass storage device. Moments before this happened, I had downloaded some pdf magazines through Calibre and several moments before I had installed the RepliGo pdf reader app from the market. I have deleted the two magazines, rebooted both my nook and computer several times, tried all of my pc's usb ports, unchecked the usb auto mount, the re checked and nothing I have tried has worked. Everything else is working great and I can load files on to the sd card through my PC and they are recognized just fine after I re-install the card. Also, when I plug my cord in to the nook linked to the PC it starts charging just fine.
Any help would be appreciated.
OK, let's start with a dumb question. My NC can be fickle...sometimes when I connect USB, it automatically mounts, other times it takes a while. One thing is for sure...I get nothing unless I look at the screen, and make sure it's unlocked (swiped past the lock screen). Have you made sure to do that?
Sorry if that's an idiotic question.
-Matt
Thanks for the quick reply. Each time I plugged in my nook after I made some change I was sure to unlock to confirm that I was still having the same problem. Also, when looking in the device manager I doesn't seem to acknowledge that a new device has been plugged in which makes me thing something is going on with me nook.
Next question...have you tried a few different USB cables? Also, I'm on my second (soon to be third) Nook. The first had a USB port that appeared to have minor internal damage. When you plug in the USB does it go in smoothly, or does it take a few tries? If the latter you may have port issues.
-Matt
I haven't yet, but I plan on bringing the cord to a B&N close to my work tomorrow to see if that is the problem. Is there somewhere that I can get the nook color usb drivers? I have seen a link on nook devs but it is in the context of using adb so I don't know if it would apply to this situation.
Thanks
Jon
I get this too. Got my cable replaced at B&N today. Haven't tried it on my computer yet though. When I connected mine to my MacBook, it will say that the nook is drawing too much power and then disables my USB port. Annoying.

I was going to mention reinstalling the drivers, but you noted that it isn't showing up in device manager. But I wonder...take a look at:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_USB_ADB
In particular, this might be helpful:
If you did not succeed, identify each nook entry in device manager (each device with a Hardware ID of USB\VID_2080&..., right click and uninstall it. There may be several. Uninstall all of them. Unplug the nookColor, replug it, and restart from Section III.

Click to collapse

So I would need to do all of the steps on the aforementioned nook devs site in order to reinstall the drivers. Also, in the device manager I looked at all the usb devices and did not find the right information to indicate the nook was attached.
Thanks for all of the help
Jon
Hello XDA developers / forum users,
Finaly I've buyed myself a (very) nice phone: The Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 .
I'm really happy with it, but I've a smal problem with connecting my phone by USB to my Windows 7 64bit computer. I can't get it working.
Not with Kies, not with installing just the driver, nothing seems to help.
Hopefully someone overhere has had the same problem which has been solved already ......
I've searched your forum and also the internet for the solution and/or work arround, but couldn't find anything what helped.
I'm sorry when I've missed the topic on your forum, if so please post the link.
I hope someone can help me out with this isue,
Thanks in advance,
nldark

Read first few line of main post, you will find both 32/64 bit driver
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Thanks dr.ketan for your reaction,
Unfortunately it's still not working ....
By the install procedure it says:
USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfuntioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
When I do this it will try to install again the driver, but it says that it has already the latest driver. Nothing helps, uninstall, reinstall.
In the device manager it shows up under Universal Serial Bus controllers as: Unknow device.
What else of suggestions do you have?
Any help would be apreciated .....
I had issues too. Sometimes it would take forever to find the driver and sometimes in errors out.
After you installed Kies. Go to device manager and find your Samsung device. Usually will have the yellow caution triangle next to it. Right click change drivers. Do not let Windows search. I don't know the exact wording off hand but you want to get to the point where windows will let you select from a list of devices. Scroll down to Samsung and select. That's what worked for me.
Hi there again,
With a samsung galaxy s, is connecting easy does it with my windows7 64bit computer.
So in my opinion it really has to do with the driver.
I have also tried to connect to a XP computer (with my note), what also works fine.
Does anyone have an idea?
Sent from my Samsung Note
Uninstall kies, Just reinstall isolated driver.
If you connecting device with Extension cable, remove it, N connect direct to USB slot of main board(back side)
once it recognise, you can reinstall kies.
I'm having problems with drivers too but with the bluetooth driver. My laptop can't recognize my Note's bluetooth. I was able to install the driver before but the problem came up when I reinstalled windows. I have windows 7 x64 home premium installed. I can send and receive files though after pairing, but I need to manually click the send and receive options in my computer unlike before where I can send and receive files automatically.
Thanks Dr. Ketan,
Since I put my USB cable at the backside from the computer it recognized my telephone
I tried this also with an USB extension cable, but as you said already this isn't working!
I tried also again the front USB connector, but with that connector my telephone won't still be recognized, so I buyed a long cable and will use from now on the back side USB connector!
Thanks again for the good work,
No Kies..... AAAAArrgghh
I read so many threads to disable USB debugging, reboot (with/without SIM/microSD), uninstalled all USB and BT from PC (W7-X64) uninstall/reinstall Kies, and still KIES gives me this message not to be able to connect to my N7000.
There was a little KIES update which started to ask for the right phone, but the N7000 was not even listed!. Took me an entire day!
What a nightmare! Al other phones I have used worked like a charm to connect and sync. Here I sit with a 500 Euro Galaxy Note which even does not have my contacts!
To add to this (it being an appropriate thread),
I have Note and win7/64 and connections was fine with Keis installed but not running i did not have any problems until last week, when suddenly i could not read the micro USB card nor copy files from the phone.
After much mucking about, deleting drivers and reloading etc, i stumbled across a thread somewhere that suggested unmounting then mounting the SD card.. this worked.
Note and windows 7 32-bit
it works perfectly with XP Pro (synching and note being recognized).
While I try to do the same thing with windows 7 (32 bit) I does not recognize the note (I have installed the driver from : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997)
I have dismounted and mounted back the microsd card. Still not recognized. It only says that the driver has been installed, that the usb connection is working fine but the note is not listed in device manager nor I can synch anything.
Any ideas?

reinstall kies then use a different usb port i too use win 7x64
I have uninstalled Kies wifi and disabled kies air. Which should I reinstall ?
I completely abandoned KIES as it is a nightmare.... for a few euro I bought something called Mobisynapse, which seems to do the job alright, although it is rather simple in its functionality.
(Unbelievable Samsung making nice products but this crappy s/w.)

Along the way I've had to play about with several things quite often to get the connection working. See: this (the whole thread discusses this sort of connection issues); in this thread several of the problems I posted turned out to be related to USB ports and drivers.
Basically the variables are, as far as I can see:
- on the device side, USB debugging (see this, third bit) and neighbouring posts, and USB connection mode (see above)
- and on the pc side first the USB drivers, which you have already downloaded. I can make a connection using both Kies drivers (though I tend to agree with Eira007 here about their temperamentality) and Samsung USB drivers. BUT they won't co-exist. I have two separate (multiboot) instances of Windows 7 with Kies on one and Samsung drivers on the other! And then on the PC side finally the USB port you use. The drivers won't work with just any USB port, "kieskeurig" I would almost be tempted to say (sorry, Dutch joke). Most people (as in this thread) stress the importance of using a USB port at the back of the computer. However, in my rooting quest (see above) I actually discovered that connection via a USB port at the back of the computer didn't work but that connection via a USB hub did. So my experience is that with these four variables it's very much a case of "your mileage may vary" as they say, although the experts definitely advise no hub or USB extension cable and a rear side USB port. I would advise you to play around with the variables until it suddenly, magically works, keeping in mind that you can't install Kies and ordinary Samsung drivers together. Also, when removing one driver and installing the other you have to do a very thorough deinstall first (remove all related files and registry references) and a clean reinstall, otherwise Windows will just say, as mentioned in this thread that "the latest drivers are already installed". Incidentally, with Kies the Note appears in Windows explorer as one device, but with Samsung drivers the two SD cards appear as two separate drives. Finally I found that Kies takes a good while to respond and recognise the Note, and sometimes you have to go through the "Troubleshoot device connection" procedure several times before Kies suddenly wakes up and finds the device. (I'm not 100% certain about the label on the button as I'm not on my sync PC at the moment.)

Thanks a million for pointing me to this. The reason I went to such lengths to keep Kies was because I couldn't find anything else that would sync my contacts, tasks and schedule with Outlook over USB. I'm going to check this out!
Guys,
I don't understand why we have to install Kies. With my laptop at home, Kies is not installed, it recognizes the phone (internal memory, and microsd) without any issues.
At the office I have Win 7 (32 bit), this is more recent than XP Pro however it does not work.
The Note should be detected without any softs (Kies etc)...
As I said, you don't have to install Kies, but your system does need drivers for the device, be they from Kies or wherever. Windows includes its own versions of lots of drivers, and it may be that your installation of Windows XP has drivers it at least "thinks" are the right ones for the device, whereas your installation of Windows 7 doesn't. And this wouldn't be the first time Windows 7 failed to do something that XP did OK.
I called the Samsung Benelux support yesterday. They told me to turn 2 features on in control panel/applications: Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5.1 (check 2 boxes). Then install Kies and then plug the usb cable. Tried it several times, does not work...
What do you need to do?
Kies = drivers + software to sync Note with PC (among other things);
Just drivers = if you (say) want to connect to your Note with PC Odin.
Kies indeed requires .NET framework if I remember correctly. But if you just need to "see" your Note's file system from the PC (like with PC Odin) then installing Kies is probably more trouble than it's worth.
Mobisynapse, suggested by Eira007 several posts ago, will also have to install drivers to work. I haven't got it yet as I'm still trying to get the website to accept my credit card.
Sorry to ask but what is PC Odin ? What does it do ? I just need my Win 7 laptop to see my Note. Currently it does not. I have tried with/without Kies and Mobisynapse. Still does not work. XP Pro sees my Note without any softs.
My sons got two hd+'s for xmas and I'm in the process of attempting to connect through adb, which I have done many times with v various phones, yet when I plug the nook in I hear and see it connect and then immediately disconnect over and over again. Ideas?
It seems its only when I'm in usb debugging mode. Both are doing it.
I've rooted, installed GAPPS and so on many Nook HD+ tablets; most for my friends, since they have no idea how to do it. I've noticed this problem occurs due to the Nook not being installed correctly in ADB mode.
What I would recommend is going into Device Manager, find "Android Composite ADB Interface" and make sure it has a green-chip-like icon on the bottom left corner of the icon. If not, then it's not functional. To solve this, once your tablet is connected, it should be detected as a media player/portable device, with the name BNTV600 (I think it is/was - all this is still in Device Manager by the way). Right click on the device, and attempt to change the portable media player into a "USB Composite" device. That should solve the trick.
If you're still having problems, I can connect to you via TeamViewer remotely to access your computer, whilst your tablet is connected and solve the problem for you (if I can). If you'd like, I can completely root your tablet for you. I've done it for a couple of friends over TeamViewer, so if you'd like, I can do it for you too.
Best of luck.
P.S. Try disabling "USB Debugging" mode and set "Enable ADB".
It seems no matter what I do I can't get the popup to show to authorize my computer on the device. The device shows up just fine in adb but is unauthorized and I can't authorize it due to never receiving the popup. I'm using Windows 8.1 which is where I prefer to do my development but I actually installed linux and set up my environment there just to see if I could at least authorize the device but still couldnt get the popup there either!
Here's a complete list of what I have tried. They arn't in accurate order, i've listed them generally as I remember doing them...
1. First off i just let windows detect the device and install the driver. The device showed up in device manager as Asus Android Composite ADB Interface
2. I'm using Android Studio. I made sure everything was up to date. ADB Version 1.0.32, Android Studio itself fully updated and everything up to date according to SDK Manager.
3. Looked to Asus for a specific driver but there is no driver for this specific model.
4. Tried Google USB drivers. Had to force install
5. Tried Asus Android ADB Interface and Asus Android Composite ADB Interface drivers I found online. Had to force install.
6. Tried Asus PC Link hoping it would install the correct drivers automatically.
7. Rebooted pc and device many times as well as toggling usb debugging, revoking usb authorizations and switching between MTP and PTP. All of these were done in just about every possible combination with every driver I have tried.
After all of the above the device continued to either show offline or unauthorized. All these drivers seemed to work as the device was picked up by adb, but no authorization dialog on device.
8. All of the above was done under Windows 8.1 so at this point I said screw it and installed linux just to see if I could at least get the authorization popup to show. I Installed Android Studio under linux and performed all the necessary steps. To cut a long story short I did pretty much the same as I did in Windows minus messing around with drivers. Again under linux I could get the device to show but either as offline or with no permissions and still no authorization dialog.
9. I don't know much about linux, so had the help of a couple of kind guys on irc who walked me through some other things which im not entirely sure what they were.....something like adding android rules and registering usb devices manually with their PID and VID. lsusb seemed to show the device just fine.
10. Evntually gave up on linux as I hadn't made any progress at all and I was just getting the same problems as with windows 8.1. So at this point I went back to Windows.
11. Went back to the Asus site and grabbed a an adb driver for a simalar device (differnt model of the memo pad 7). I had a look in the inf file for this driver and found that my model was actually in there and got excited. Windows wouldn't let me install because of the file being corrupt or possibly being tampered with, so I disabled driver signature enforcement and windows happily installed them. This was something new as they were the first drivers that installed niceley since the very first one windows automatically installed. I'm satisfied now that I actually have the right drivers due to my model actually being in the inf file and the device is now being picked up consistently by adb. When it is picked up as offline all I need to do is toggle usb debugging and it gets picked up again as unauthorized...but still....
NO AUTHORIZATION DIALOG ON THE DEVICE....ARGGGHHHHHH!
Also I should mention, while doing this I also tried with a Lenovo device as I went through each step of trying to get the Asus to work and I had the same problem with the Lenovo. No authorization dialog. But how is this possible? 2 devices, multiple usb cables, 7 usb ports, Windows and Linux, Multiple drivers for each device etc etc.
I'm at the end of my tether here. I have been at this for about a week solid now and I am no closer to finding out the problem. Surely it can't be 2 problematic devices? But It can't be both Windows and Linux? Are all my USB ports broken? Are all the 5 USB cables I used (Official asus, official lenovo, official htc and 2 generic cables) damaged?
The only similarities here are that The pc remains the same and both devices are kitkat 4.4.2.
Please help!
EDIT: I now have 5 devices here. The Asus Memo Pad 7 ME170C, Lenovo 3500-f, Archos Gamepad, HTC Desire HD and a crappy chinese tablet off ebay (Allwinner A13). The latter 3 are running older versions of android that don't have the whitelisting feature and all show up with their serial numbers ABCDWHATEVER Device when running adb devices but as soon as I run android studio they go offline. The Asus and Lenovo show as ABCDWHATEVER Unauthorized (still not getting the authorization dialog on these two devices) and also go offline when running android studio.
Ok, it looks like i simply cannot access any android device on this PC. I can't even browse the files on the device in windows as the window just locks up and the top green progress bar runs and gradually gets slower then never completes. I'm gonna make a new post on another forum about this since it no longer seems device specific.
EDIT: RESOLVED!
The issue was caused by AdFree (h**p://adfree.big*tin*can.com/, thank you forum software from objecting to a URL and erasing my entire edit). This is strange because I have an older version of AdFree on my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it worked fine for years. This is very bizarre and the symptoms are very misleading, but as soon as I uninstalled AdFree, my problems stopped.
I guess I need to find a new ad blocker, can anyone recommend? This was resdon #1 why I rooted the phone.

Hi everyone, have a problem with my brand-spankin-new N6, and it's driving me up the goddamn wall, hoping for some help.
Running Win7 64 bit. Never had issues of this sort before.
Got Nexus 6, rooted using Wug's kit. Everything went peachy.
Then I tried connecting it to my PC, and... no joy. The PC makes the usual "ba-donk" noise that indicates that a USB device has connected, and the little icon shows up in the taskbar with the green dot goin round and round... It grinds for a while, and then pukes out with "The device was not successfully installed" error. I tried different USB ports and different cables, same result. What's worse, this is happening on my laptop as well (also Win7, 64 bit).
Also in the system event log I see this: The device MTP USB Device (location Port_#0004.Hub_#0003) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.
Now here's the kicker... if I shut down the phone (power off) and then power it on while it is plugged in, it shows up in the Windows Explorer, and I can access and browse it (and Windows even says "device installed successfully"). But if I unplug it and then plug it back in, the above scenario plays out again, and I can't access my N6.
Under Device Manager, N6 shows up under "portable devices", sometimes as "Nexus 6" and sometimes as "MTP USB Device". Sometimes it looks normal, and sometimes it turns up with "this device could not start." If you think this is maddening, it's because it is.
I have tried:
- Shutting off USB Debug - no effect.
- Rebooted multiple times - no effect.
- Downloaded the latest google driver and the motorola device manager - no effect.
- Uninstalled driver while Nexus was plugged in (right-clicked, properties, uninstall driver). Re-plugged Nexus, Device manager shows "USB MTP Device", but device cannot start. Right-clicked on device, update driver -> drivers that I have on my PC -> USB MTP Device -> it grinds for a while, still cannot start the device (Code 10).
- Used USBDevView to blow away any Google drivers, and anything resembling Nexus 6, then replugging it and reinstalling it - no effect.
- Uninstalled Wug's kit, including the drivers - no effect.
Driver information shows that it's using Microsoft's USB drivers,
I don't know what else to do, and am quite beside myself. I've read multiple posts on the subject, some of them suggest "uninstalling the driver while the phone is unplugged" which is not really an option what with the phone not being listed in the device manager when it is unplugged! Also, my laptop didn't have Wug's kit on it in the first place and it's displaying the same symptoms.
Now of course in a pinch I could shut off my phone and reboot it every time I wanted to connect it to a PC., but that is patently stupid and definitely doesn't qualify for "working as intended" for a goddamn $700 brick!! I'm starting to suspect that rooting the phone somehow pooched it, because it was connecting fine prior to root. And Wug's kit has never given me issues! (I rooted my previous Nexus with it, now granted it was the original Galaxy Nexus from way back then).
I feel very stupid for having to ask this, but I really have never seen this kind of crap before. I mean, what can be simpler than connecting your phone to your PC, right? (ha-ha). Please be helpful and gentle, I really would like this resolved. At this point I'll follow any step-by-step instructions, even if they involve sacrificing chickens and doing the ol' rain dance. Thanks in advance.
Issue resolved!

I ended up just pasting a bunch of entries into hosts file. Blocks most of it, I think (though can't seem to squash ads in some games like Angry Birds for some reason).
