The answer is in your question....
Custom kernels require unlocked bootloader
understand!
thanks
i thought it was only for custom ROM
I somewhat knew this from a long time ago but I've forgotten. Its been a while since I got a new phone
also as I remember, they force u to unlock bootloader thru SONY so that warranty cant be claimed, mainly afraid of people who OC CPU and GPU which can damage the device (which is reliant on custom kernel)

I tested it and working with xperia arc 2.3.4 (.42) fw!
I suggest you changed the title something like "cmw recovery on locked bl and more". I think many want recovery with but hesitant to unlock bootloader. Thanks for posting.
works perfect on rooted stock arc locked bootloader
sounds wonderful. I shall try on mine too
Can I install ROM now from the dev section in the forum?
can confirm that this does not work on the Xperia acro IS11S
so does this allow a recovery menu for devices with locked bootloaders, does that mean we can flash custom firmware on these devices. if not what are the benefits of locked bootloaders having a recovery menu

Try it! lol
If we install CWM using this method, is there a way to remove it if we need to claim the phone on warranty or anything?
Also can more people confirm this definitely works with stock fw, locked bootloader

Are you sure that'll work? You still have a locked bootloader so custom ROMs probably still won't work. I think it more for backing up stock ROMs and installing mods etc.
ah ok i guessss your right....can we flash themes?
I have no idea. I'd like to know actually. Would make it a lot easier to test things that may cause a boot loop and be able to just flash back to stock without a full reset.

You can't upload the CM7 because CM7 need another Kernel. CM7 don't working with the stock kernel! If you make change kernel you need the unlocked bootloader phone.
I think that this works:

you are right,
Now we have to wait for developers to make some good rom whit stock kernel to, i'll love some miui rom

Yes, but this is just a rom in ZIP file, just flash with CWM over the original stock rom. Test it if you have time!?
How about adding a (second) post / sticky in this Topic, with Roms, Tweaks etc. that work by CWM flashing... (locked bootloaders)
I just got a W8 with a battery date of 11W51. So I can no safely unlock the bootloader without paying someone, something I do not want to do. I read the development forum and was about to root and install xRecovery. Now I would like to install a custom ROM. Am I able to do that without an unlocked bootloader?
Yes.
You may install a custom rom without unlocking bootloader.(only those one which require stock kernel).

Is there anyway to be sure a custom ROM requires stock kernel if it doesn't say so on the title or the thread?

@OP's second question
It is usually mentioned in the title. However if it's not, then you can read the thread to find out. The search feature helps you there.
Hi
Sorry for the dumb question, I dont want to root my phone (the Barclays app, I know it can be worked around) but do want to play with ROMS. All the instructions I've read say to root the phone, but do I have to to be able to put new ROMs on. Thanks a lot in advance.
Yes you obviously need to be rooted to unlock your bootloader, to flash a recovery and to flash ROMs

It's true only if the rom doesn't have a custom kernel and most roms do. If the kernel changes, you need to unlock the bootloader. Also, you can't flash a custom recovery without unlocked bootloader.
Dear all,
I have rooted my device which is running 4.3 (c5502) (build number: . 101) with towelroot. Now i need to install any custom ROM. I came to know that it requires to install recovery first before flash any ROM. I stuck there..Can you please guide me. I didn't unlock my bootloader yet but I had my TA backup with me.Thanks in advance guys.
whatever u need to know is already there. just search for it. if u expect to be spoonfed then you really shouldn't mess with your phone
The thing is, do we really need to unlock boot loader to flash custom roms, or can it be closed just with root and recovery?
No one tryed it till now I think.
Greetings.

Yes for flashing custom Roms the bootloader must be unlocked and a recovery must be installed however if you want to flash a stock based Rom unlocked boot loader is not needed. Just Root and Recovery needed for flashing the stock based Roms. Correct me if i am wrong.
1. hi all i wanted to ask for ur guidance/procedure on how to recover from bootloop if recoveries aren't functional after u've flashed a custom ROM.
2. what will happen if we flash kernel to LOCKED BL?
plz exclude flashing the stock FTF file, i need other options aside from reflashing.. i knew it already.

1. You are sure you did it this way as said under point 2?
2. It depends.
As far as I know - most base of all base rules is to stick to proper kernel.
Locked BL requires kernel for locked bootloaders.
All parts of ROM has to be consistent together. system, boot, kernel ...
Either for locked or for unlocked BL. Mixing stock and custom ROM parts is very unhealthy.
I think you need to know if the device enters in flashmode, next would be flash a new stock rom ftf with flashtool.
If the steps are OK you should have your device fixed, and have the bad xperience mixing lb ub Kerns could be....
Hope 2 have helpd you
