CM11 & acDisplay / Dynamic Notifications Apps - Moto X Q&A

Hey everyone,
I unlocked my boot loader, rooted, and flashed CM11 on my Moto X a couple days ago. I am only missing the Active Display feature from stock and wanted to replace it with something from the play store. I am running into a problem with both acDisplay and Dynamic Notifications apps. They both work when I get notifications, however do not work at all when set to "active mode". They should be using proximity and motion sensors to imitate how the Moto X normally operates. Does anyone know a way to get them to work similar to how they are "advertised" to work?

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your issue..
But I wanted to say, any app that mimics Active Display will take a great toll on your battery life. Active display is designed to use an extremely small amount of battery on the Moto X.... Any other app will not be so battery friendly.
This is why the majority of users stick to stock, with Xposed and Gravity Box for customization.... Or use stock based roms, that have the unique moto features in them.

In not seeing where either of those apps claim to use the sensors in a similar way as stock active display. Where do you see that they are advertised to do so?
Edit: scratch that. I do see that acdisplay claims to use the sensors.... Not sure why it isn't working for you.
@KJ is correct that they will use much more battery than stock AD, which takes advantage of the low voltage components of the X.

Customizing Active Display Notifications?

Hi everyone,
I'm trying out a Moto X while my S4 is in the shop. Gosh I love the feel of the X... but I miss the large multicolor LED my old RAZR MAXX HD had, and even the S4 at least has a multicolor LED, albeit a small one.
A major thing I use the LEDs for is to flash a color based on what incoming emails or texts I've gotten. So, personal email account, flash blue. Family email account, flash purple. Text message, flash red. You get the point. The phone is often far enough away that I can see the light flashing, and the color tells me whether it's urgent enough to go get it.
I like the OLED active notification idea on the Moto X, but I haven't yet found out how to customize how it represents different types of emails from different accounts. Is there some app that lets users customize the color, flash rate, etc. of notifications based on what type of notification it is? I'd like to use different color icons or positions on the screen for the different email accounts, texts, etc..
What's the best way to do it?
Thanks!
Exactly on the same boat. Not missing the LED notifier of the S4 but yes the Active Display has basically no customization, nothing. I am confident that it is due to the lack of interest, not sure though. There is no way you can customize it, AFAIK. A future Xposed mod please?
I would love to have a timeout option, which you mentioned as flash rate, more than anything, the default six seconds is way too long, especially when I wake up at morning I see the phone with just one eye to check whether there is an unread notification or not, and no one likes to stare at something with lazy eyes
PS : If really needed then you can deactivate Active Display and use Dynamic Notification from Play, but needless to say that it will take a toll on the battery life.
Glad to hear I'm not alone in my interest in this! There must be an app out there...
I've used dynamic notification app before, but I think it uses lots of battery as you cautioned.

Im trying all kind of apps that send notifications but ac does not use it..
Tried tasker but still trying to get the hang of it too.

I've never heard of anyone changing anything about active display. Sorry to say.
Disabling it, and using a similar play store app is one workaround. But that app wouldn't use the low voltage core like active display does....and your battery life would suffer greatly.
As @devilsdouble mentioned. The Moto X has one core dedicated to stuff like Active Display so the battery life has no hurt by using it.
In my personal opinion this is the way it should be. Just let you know what you receive, ,you can choose to open or dismiss. Everything else should be a lot.

[Q] any ROM utilizing Motorola low-power processor for notifications?

Hi,
as seen from Motorola Android 5.1 release notes, only Moto Active Display utilizes special low-power processor for displaying notifications, but Ambient display feature, that is built-in Lolipop and CM12 mods doesn't use that advantage. My question is: are there any ROMs that are able to utilize it, except of stock-based ROMs? Maybe someone has managed to get Moto drivers for this processor and include it in their ROM?
Thanks,
a.
None, sorry. Only stock based roms.
as you can see in this gerrit review doze package was added to cm12.1 which can access moto sensors to detect pickup and other stuff. i dont know if it uses the low power sensors for detection.
Thanks! I wish they were able to do that, I really don't want notifications to drain the battery, that is why I'm still on rooted stock KitKat

Moto Display + AOSP ? (always wondered this)

Does anyone know if I would get the benefits of Motorola's proprietary drivers used by Moto Display if I simply installed an AOSP ROM and then installed the Moto Display on top of it?
Well that's not really a thing, since those drivers are embedded in the stock firmware. Same for Moto Voice.
Ambient display and OK Google are really not worth the hassle of trying to make them work like Moto software, cause they can't.

Moto Display Possible on CM?

Hello XDA!
I was wondering if its possible to install and run the original Moto Display application on my device. My device is a Moto X 2014 (Pure Edition) running Cyanogenmod 14.1. I have tried alternatives such as DynamicNotifications, ACDisplay, and Cyanogenmod's own Ambient display, but none compared to how Moto Display feels. I've tried installing the application from the Play Store but once I open the "Display" portion of the Moto app, the app crashes and goes to the main screen. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks again and I look forward to my first XDA Thread.
Hi man!
I get that this is your first thread, but this has been discussed a million times. You'll never get Moto Display or Voice on any ROM that is not stock. They're closed source apps and there's nothing we can do about it, not even workarounds because the lads at Google are greedy bast*rds which have hijacked most of the features in Android, the most notable one being, guess what, voice control.

Thanks for your help. I am sad that its a close sourced app but I guess there's nothing I can do about it. Thanks you for assisting me in this matter.:good:
You're welcome I also used CM14 for some time until I realised that workarounds for Display weren't the same thing, that replicating Voice functionality was a lost cause, and that I needed some Xposed-related features for my job (such as disabling the proximity sensor).
I settled on stock 6.0 with N-ify and N Navbar, which do a pretty good job at making this phone feel up-to-date.
It's a setup I would suggest to anyone looking for a feature-minded compromise, even if multiwindow is absent and quick reply only works to a certain extent.

Sneaky switch-over

I'm a HUGE fan of SmartActions, and all the incarnations after. I do think we should have the option to have certain apps run in certain scenarios, android permitting. I haven't fully embraced any 3rd party ROM because they haven't ported over MotoActions. I've noticed that some MotoActions functions seem to be handing more and more of execution to the Google service. Also, SmartLock isn't keeping my xt1254 unlocked at home. Has the final nail been selected by Lenovo to put MotoActions to final rest? The Turbo is likely my last Motorola (Lenovo) phone.

What Moto Actions are you talking about that haven't been "ported" over? For instance, since early 2015 we've long had Quark Ambient Display which replicates all functionality of Moto Display perfectly. It uses our IR sensors just like Moto Display. I'm not talking about regular Android Ambient Display --- I'm talking about the Quark Ambient Display our former CM dev developed that is in use to this day. But it's never going to be called "Moto Display" (a proprietary, copyrighted name), which some people seem to want more than the actual function they can easily have.
No, there won't ever be something in custom ROMs or apps called "Moto Actions" because that's also proprietary name, but the same thing can be done and long has been done. There's nothing unique about anything Motorola has or does that has not been copied, replicated, emulated by other apps or custom ROMs. Unless you can give me an example I'm not aware of.
I've had smart unlock on my Quarks for years now with custom ROM. Works fine.

The kind that knows when you're home, driving, sleeping, etc. Used to be that you chose what/how/when all happens given a certain circumstance. I'm likely missing something. I tried to use Tasker to simulate it in custom ROM, but it was too complicated to do, and I fell back to OE.
Smart lock should work for me, but doesn't. My only guess is interference from another app.

It works for me too. If you go to another phone then you'll still not have anything called Moto Actions, just the same things called something different by that phone's manufacturer. There must be something interfering with it. Do you have any task killers or greenify running? Apps the put the phone into doze mode early? Wake lock blocker (like Amplify)?

That's what I've suspected, other phones have their own automated actions. The unlock mystery is not over, but it is being weeded out.

Good luck. I sometimes use an app called ForceDoze that's puts the phone into doze mode shortly after screen off. Sometimes it interferes with other apps (Even system ones) though. I usually have to add them to the list of "not optimized" in the battery settings.
One day I'll set up Tasker to just turn it on at night and certain times/locations.

Just for giggles, I set up my pure stock, minimun app equipped LG tablet for smartlock. Using only the Google recognized locale for my house, damn thing is locked when I do the factory double-tap wake option. Sumpthin' ain't cool. Now, the phone seems to be working ok...for now...I think...possibly. I also set up Tasker (I think, I hope) to do the PIN input along with a few other 'SmartActions' that Motorola dropped from their automated system like simple radio and app operation.
