PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR HAVE FASTBOOT AND RECOVERY FULL UNLOCKED BEFORE USE!!!!
so recently i have had my GT540 stolen, so i though next time ill SEMI-brick my phone over the air. i am currently developing an app that will;
1. listence for a text
E.g. "Brick Me PASSWORD IMEI"
PASSWORD would be your preset password
IMEI would be your IMEI number
2. upon receving this text it will;
extract the "erase_image" binary and erase your boot partition, then run "reboot -p" which will turn off your phone.
this meen that the phone wont be able to boot up the android OS, but it WILL be able to boot into recovery mode and fastboot mode.
So, this mean that a nandroid back up is required before testing. could anybody help me out with testing this app(i would but i wont have a new phone for a wile yet, awating the Nexus 3 release ). Also an emulator doesnt have busybox installed, and wont install.
Download
wowowowowowwowowow nice idea!!!you planning to make this a paid app on the market ????? well i want to help but im too busy studying for my end of year exams so maybe next time.....
thinking about it, but need to make sure it works first.
So, basically.. the software would screw up your phone, leaving it in a state where it's pretty easy to repair, and all your personal information would stay intact.. and just re-flashing a good boot.img would make your phone fully accessible again. Sorry, not a good idea, because any sensitive information you have on your phone would still be accessible(in the right hands anyway). The software's definitely not going to help you get your phone back, so I figure there's no reason for the data on it to stay intact. If you can figure out a way to wipe it AND screw it up, that would be more useful(sdcard too!). Also, having to rely on sending an SMS to yourself is also a bit useless, because no one in their right mind will leave the phone on, and with the SIM card in, so I'm thinking you should rather make the client(phone-side) application await commands not only from messages, but also from the internet(Of couse, I imagine that would require an online service, where the client stays logged in in order to keep an updated IP, and also that would mean more traffic on the monthly bill, but it's a small price to pay).
Just my thoughts on this.. the overall idea is great, but you should at least consider a different method of activation(rather than SMS). Good luck.
P.S. Actually.. when i think about it. You could also pair the client with the current SIM card, so when and IF that's replaced, and the phone is turned on, it sends a message to some other predefined number with the new card's number, and you could operate with that. There was a software for Symbian UIQ(and probably not only) that did exactly this.
Good ideas, will work on erasing all data, and damaging the sdcard. not shore on how well it would work though because my app would be in the data partition.
update: ok, so i managed to wipe the sdcard and data partition, any idea on deleting all the partition with busybox?
ill wait till i get a new phone to test it. thanks ofr your suggestion nutterbg
theres an app out there atm called Seekdroid, it can track your phone to within 30metres, lock it , wipe sd , wide anything as a matter of fact and u can cancel everything the user wants to do. Check it out , all u do is log onto a website to find it

Sorry, not a developer, so I've no idea. I do good as a common-sense-endowed-person though. I doubt it's possible to damage the sd card.. irreperably anyway, and I'm guessing you wouldn't want that(how does one test that?), but yeah, wiping it is more than enough.

you could make the app that has a update.zip in it and use recoverys extended commands to reboot into recovery and auto flash the zip that has a .sh and the flash_erase file in it to erase the system/data/boot partitions just an idea

Hmm. Nice idea. But, it is kind of risky if implemented correctly.
You can modify erase_image to remove recovery, data and cache partitions. This way it will do a remote wipe as well.I believe it would be possible to mess up the boot loader as well rendering the phone completely useless.

Hm, you got me thinking.. Does a phone with a messed up bootloader(obviously no fastboot, no regular boot, no recovery) still boot into Download Mode(no battery)? I wonder if the bootloader's responsible for that too... otherwise you could render the phone not only completely useless, but irreparable, and I'm not sure we want that... Or how we can test that without losing a phone.

Depends on how much you damage the boot loader. If you fully wipe it, the phone would become useless. The only way to fix it would be writing directly to the motherboard in super-dev mode using special equipment. I don't know if this is supported by LG Optimus though.
Nonetheless, after reading this, I got a cooler idea. Why shouldn't we write a trojan and inject it to a system core apk? Perhaps to the browser or location service?
This way we could find the location of the phone even after a factory reset provided the system apks were not replaced. ie, when the thief finally sells it and someone else uses it, we would be able to track it and get it back. Also, we can have a feature to wipe user data and a complete destruction mode where we damage the phone beyond repair.
Hi guys, first of all, yes I'm noob, but neither I'm dumb or lazy. All I'm looking for is being pointed in the right direction, and some help in understanding how to upgrade the phone to something different than a paperweight or brick, whichever you prefer..
I've been considering upgrading my X8 with a custom ROM, and been reading a lot, but info is still very confusing, and in some threads downloads aren't available anymore. So i decided to create this thread and try to sum all my questions at once... If you could point out some easy guide links, I'd appreciate.
So.. Here's where I'm at.. I already rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader. And now I'm stuck..
I dunno how to properly backup my data (i want call log, messages, images, apps, etc...), neither how to backup my ROM and stock kernel.
Also i find the flashing kernel and ROM process still a bit confusing. Dunno how to safely proceed to upgrade it.
And finally I'm confused in which ROM i should choose. I've looked at MiniCM10 with JB, but there are some minor bugs. I also saw SEMC Debrand Engine, ICZaraki and SonySX ROMs that looked great, but i'm unsure which will be best for me. I'm not looking for flashing it many times, in preference, I'd love to do it only once, and get it right at first. All i want is a fast, stable, bug free, and good looking ROM.
Thanks.

Just make backup of your rom before doing else ..
And if you want fast and stable.use cm7 or gingerdx ..

1. ROMs are constantly updated when a more stable version has been built.
2. ROM can be backed up in CWM recovery (or TWRP if you are using it). Just go to Backup and restore and select backup.
3. Images that are stored in the sdcard are not deleted unless you format it.
4. It's pretty much impossible to brick (the coma brick) a phone while flashing ROMs. You may suffer from bootloops though, which is what we call a soft brick. Just make sure you factory reset and wipe cache partition (or whatever the particular ROM requires you to do; that's why there are instructions).
5. Good luck.

2. What or What??? Maybe you missed the part where i said i'm a noob, and therefor can't understand all the Acronyms you spell.. And that is a BIG part of all my confusion in understanding most posts.
4. Factory reset i suppose it's on the phone menu, but how exactly do I wipe the cache?
This is why i asked for some proper guide links. I know you probably have been repeating the same things over and over again, and don't want to be one more, all i ask for is proper direction.

Thanks bryan, yes my phone is rooted but all apps i see are Superuser and Titanium Backup, no xrecovery or cwm...
As for the brands own backup app, i used it already, and i think it backups pretty much all the data i need. If that's enough, great. But i still need to learn how to backup ROM and kernel before proceeding to flash.
Once again, some pointers are appreciated.. Thanks.
everything x8/w8 still doesn't tell me how to backup my stock rom and kernel.. don't i need this in case things go wrong or i simply want to roll back to stock?
Thanks.

Wow!!! A lot clear now...
Finally i understand how the backup and update is done.
But i'm still confused with the kernel, sorry.. Is there no need to back it up?
Also how do i choose which kernel is best for me, alfs or nAa?
Thanks.

the choice of kernel depends on which rom you're planning to use. some roms can be used on top of different kernels, so you may have to test them for yourself first.
Thanks. But i'm still wondering about my stock kernel.. Do I need to back it up? Can I download it anywhere if i want to roll back?

Hello again,
I decided to go with MiniCM10, but i want to partition 2Gb of my 8Gb SD card for swap and apps, and i'm a little confused..
According to:
needs a clean install of miniCM10:
flash JB kernel
in CWM, go to mount&storage :
then, format /system, /data and /cache (so that kernel can use the new partitions size) any data on phone memory will be lost
set up your swap:
==> go to /advanced/Partition SD Card
if you don't want to use a2sd, then choose the minimal size for ext, and the size you want for SWAP
it will FORMAT your SDcard ! any data on SDcard will be LOST
and install the rom
swap partition should work
what doesn't work is the swap info menu
Click to collapse
All my SD card data will be lost, is this true? If so, how do i proceed to backup and restore my backups to my sd card?
I also read this in SIII ROM:
how to partition your sd card:
first
download this new link: http://easeus-partition-master-home-....softonic.com/
its free and you need it to partition your sd card or any other partition tool
8GB as a guide just change to sd size
1. back up your sd card to pc/laptop
2. open partition tool select your sd card and resize to 6gb
3. now with unallocated space make a new partition in ext3/4 2gb (make sure that both partitions are primary NOT logical )
4. now format both partitions
5. now put all your files back on your sd card. windows will only see the 6gb fat32 partition don't worry thats fine

Would this be applicable for MiniCM10 ROM swap procedure? It seems so much easier..
Thanks again for all your patience in helping me understand what i'm doing and guide me in doing it right.
Thanks!

Hi!
Here is my problem : my internal storage is gone. I mean, not accessible by any means. External SD Card is still detected but not the internal storage. When in recovery (TWRP) and I try to mount internal storage, it gives me the error "unable to mount /emmc bad parameter" or something like that.
I've looked around on the internet for ways to fix this and, in fact, I found some, but I still need an information.
Could anyone check within their devices partition table to indicate me which one is supposed to be the one that contains the /emmc partition? Also if someone could be nice enough to help me fixing my problem, I'd be forever grateful ^^.
I have a slightly-above-average Linux knowledge, I am a student in programming (C# actually) and I also have an Android SDK setup so command line does not scare me .
Thank you to whoever will help

No offence but that's crappy advice, imo. If you tell people that the only way to recover from a soft brick is by restoring stock, you'll help raise a full generation of idiots. Flashing a stock .FTF can do many things if you don't know how to use Flashtool, including wiping the internal storage (which I'm sure OP doesn't want), and is only really necessary if nothing else works.
@H0lmEd: Try flashing the TWRP recovery (2.8.5.0 is the latest available version) and while you're at it, flash the boot image of the nightly you've downloaded. Boot into TWRP, then backup your data partition (if you have any data on there that you'd like to restore later). Then wipe /system, /cache, /data and dalvik (basically anything but your SD card and internal storage), and flash the ROM zip. You should be up and running again.
If you want to restore any apps and such, you can try just restoring from TWRP, or (preferably) using an app (like Titanium Backup) to restore your apps and their data from the recovery backup.

I believe that your intentions were good, as were mine; I was simply pointing out that your advice is valid and satisfactory, but that there are many methods that are more efficient and overall superior.
You are free to remove your account should you so please, but having somebody correct you is no reason to wish to do that -- must I switch schools (or worse, commit suicide) because my math teacher corrected me when I had made an error!? We're here to help other people learn, both you and me. There are hundreds upon hundreds of people that know better than both of us, and we are here to learn from them. Taking the comment of your advice to your heart is no way to go about it (or anything else in life, for that matter). Instead what you should see is a short critique of your advice, followed by a comment on what is better and why that is so -- see the knowledge and helpfulness, don't stop because you did something that wasn't perfect.
And though my comment was not meant as a derogatory one, I do see that my poor choice of words could and, in fact, should, be improved upon.
I'll try to make this long story short. My experience level is pretty low. I've rooted and flashed firmware to a few devices in the past, but Odin worked well and I was always following instructions.
I have a n AT&T Note 3 N900A running 5.0
I accidentally deleted a folder of photos, and needed to root my device in order to attempt recovering the lost photos.
I Tried King root, kingoroot, etc... and failed to root the device.
Then used the N900AUCUBMI1_OneClickBin which Fails it says "SW REV CHECK FAIL: [sbl1]Fused 2 > Binary 1
then i tried Odin and root De la Vega which also failed
Now my device is stuck at "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
I download latest Kies... it doesnt support my device....
How can I fix this? Is there a rooted rom I can flash to it? I really just want to extract the deleted photos as the device is aging, but now I'm in over my head.
If this isnt something I can do myself, I'm willing to pay monies if there is someone reputable with references that can fix this for me.
Update
I was able to use Odin 3.09 to install CSC_ATT_N900AATTDNL1_CL3032228_QB3188679_REV03_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
the phone is now able to boot and works fine but.... it is completely wiped.
I had saved most of my stuff odd the phone, but I still need to root and run data recovery on deleted photos
still needing help, please. thank you.

I've tried several recovery software.
My entire DCIM filder from the device is gone. I'm assuming because I reflashed that I wrote over it? I'm surprised that 1500 pictures wouldnt be able to be found in the device.... Maybe theres solution I dont know about that can do a much deeper scan?
I'm so upset that I lost everything... Didnt realize it wasnt on the SD card... years of military and family photos gone...
I'd appreciate any help at this point. Does someone have access to forensic tools that can recover the lost data?

I've given up on recovery tools and want to make a .raw image of the internal storage that I can convert into a disc image which I can scan. I'm not really understanding how to do the directions at http://www.asoftech.com/articles/android-enable-mass-storage.html
Update:
I learned a LOT in the last few days.
I went and bought a 64gb SD card and am using Cygwin with the command dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/storage/extSdCard/system.img
I am not certain if this will strip the entire 32gb internal memory and put it on SD card, but we will find out. It is currently at 3gb and growing fast.

I successfuly dumped internal memory to an IMG file on the external SD. Scanned teh data but did not find waht I wanted.
I imagine that if I could get direct access to the internal memory I could recover the data, but that is not hardware or software possible anymore, so I learned once again to back up important things.
Thanks everyone for the helpful responses.
Now to decide what ROM to flash...
Any layman that comes across this thread in the future and wants to save deleted files off your phone, my advice to you is: Take the battery out of your phone and stop using it immediately. If you don't have root access, send it to a professional data recovery service and explain the type of files you lost.
