Xperia SP 5306
Carrier is Rogers Canada
Rooted with towelroot successfully
Have a LOCKED bootloader - am unable to unlock
Recoveries successfully installed
Running Sony's stock 4.3
Did a full nandroid backup using TWRP
Tried flashing this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-sp/development/rom-207-rdz-stock-rom-t2835579
Cleared caches as directed, then tried to flash rom off of SD card, it just said 'Failed'
I then just rebooted phone, and it got stuck at 'Sony' screen
Rebooted with the reset button at the back, and was able to repair it using SUS for mac (I have a macbook)
I am currently downloading flashtool and stock Rogers .ftf file for 5306 off of this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311964
Since upgrading to .266 my phone has been super laggy and slow. All I would like is to downgrade to any stock based ROM, that is quick and gets decent battery life.
Any advice would be appreciated! Did I try the wrong ROM? Any idea what I did wrong?
Thank you all so much for reading

Thank you for this information. I am currently reading Furrydaus' excellent noob guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-sp/general/root-ultimate-noobs-guide-to-rooting-t2845520
But I still am not sure what I am doing wrong... so here is my question: given the device and the software I have on my phone i.e. 5306, locked BL), is it possible for me to flash a custom ROM, and if so, can someone point me to one that might work?

Isn't vanir based on unlocked boot loader? Because he clearly says his bootloader is locked, to op: please don't install vanir on locked bootloader, go to android development section and look for Roms with LBL or LB in their title

try the last firmware!
if you're looking for stock roms (more stable) i'll recommend you to install last firmware released for xperia sp
i have tested and aproved on my c5303, this version that you mentioned (.266) has stil some bugs and is not totaly stable
actually the last firmware for xperia sp is 12.1.A.1.207 not for all countries at moment, but you may able to install for another country
without any major issues, you also can try stock based roms from 12.1.A.1.207 firmware.

You will feel a very smooth Android JB experience too! :good: :good:
Thank you everyone. And yes, I have a locked bootloader. The ROM I tried to flash (I linked to it above) says it works for LBLs but it still failed on me, as I described. I will try flashing the latest firmware here as posted by kelumsd and post back my results. I am assuming that I can flash this with no issues, even though I have a locked bootloader?
Many thanks again
Well, I tried to flash the .207 firmware and sure enough, it aborted with the following error log. Note that I definitely have USB debugging ON, and am NOT in MTP mode..
Any ideas? I am thinking the best idea is just to give up..

Hi wanted to install the latest update via PC Companion.
But there always comes the error message:
The phone contains modified software that can not be updated.
(Error 2003)
At the last update time I installed the following firmware
Xperia Z rooted firmware 10.1.1.A.1.253 German stock + CWM 6.0.2.8
Who can help me as I can now install the current firmware without which all data are gone?

Stop spamming and saying wrong solution. Flashtool is the best to fast and without problems flashing any firmware. Solution for his problem was already posted so you mustn't post again solution but this time you say wrong solution.
Hey Guys, I just switched over to this phone from the S3, and before that from the Samsung Vibrant, so I'm no stranger to flashing, recoveries and (hopefully) following instructions.
I have the C6603 with locked bootloader.
Rooted using doomlords' easy rooting
Put on recovery "cwm-locked XZ v4"
Reboot into recovery, wipe factory reset, and flash "RomAur v8.0 AROMA" using all the appropriate settings.
Reboot recovery, and and I boot loop around the Sony screen. I've had to use flashtool 5 times in a row to go back to stock, and for some reason can't load this specific ROM. MD5 on the .zip's check out. Tried a different ROM as well, and this last time phone wouldn't even turn on. Is there a crucial step I'm missing somewhere?
I transferred a couple more ROMs ot the external SD card, but I'm unsuccessful in flashing any ROM successfully. Either bootloop or screen showing nothing.
Use Twrp instead

Tried TWRP as well... still the same thing.
Have tried using TWRP as well as Clockwork, and still either softbrick, or bootloop around Sony screen.
Have tried EXCELSUS_Z_v4
monXdifiedZ
avatar nightly
and Android 4.3
and RomAUR, and havn't gotten past the Sony symbol with any of them.
I have gone back to stock to "C6603_10.1.A.1.434_UK unbranded" about 10 times now... Thoughts?
If you are flashing the newer roms you need to update to an newer kernel bootloader first ..
The stock you are flashing is older ...
If you don't have the newer kernel you will appear to have soft bricked ..
Most of the rom threads state that you need to be on a "compatible" base first.
Xperia Z (C6603) 10.3.1.A.0.244 - Generic - Central Europe
but you may have to downgrade your kernel to a 243 version to flash , then restore the 244 kernel , to be able to maintain root ..
There are several guides for this ..

Thank you! That was it. Before kernels were usually packaged with the ROM's, is the reason they are not with the xperiaZ, because some phones have locked/unlocked bootloader? So different kernal/rom combos?

They are locked by default. Even more, if tour Phone is carrier branded, only Sony can unlock it.
Even in that case, most probably they Will not unlock it

I had a problem to update too (but with stock rom) and followed the tutorial provided here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240614
Then I re-rooted by downgrading kernel, root and re-upgrading kernel following this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386405

Don't get frustrated...because i am asking u too much of questions...i am new to this topic.so i hope that u will help me..
i clicked on the second link u have posted.it asked me to download three files.well,i downloaded it.first it asked me to flash a file named "XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.A.0.423_Generic_NL_2".in order to flash a file,it has to be in .ftf format.but the file i have downloaded is a zip file.i tried changing the extension.but the flash tool doesn't seem to be recognizing the file...then i read in a forum that,"in order to flash a kernel,u need to be connected in the fastboot mode.so i changed the mode to fastboot and selected the kernel to flash.but it says"INFO - FAILED (remote: image is not a boot image)"....now what should i do.please help me...now i am using android 4.1.2(10.1.A.0.423)
Thanks in advance....
First of all, I'd like to apologize to start this open question.
It looks like everyone is getting their phone working without any much extra tutorial required along with the XDA forum guides and ROM.
I used to be a Samsung Galaxy S2 user from months ago.It took me 5 days to have my S2 Rooted and another 5days to have a stable ROM, as I was a noob back there and still a noob till now at the time I am writing or as you are reading this post.
Frankly, I'm actually lost here. I tried to visit all the links within the first 3 pages to find out how to get my phone rooted with CWM ready and getting a stable ROM on my phone without having to hassle back and forth.
Please forgive me for my noobie. I'd like to write this post and ask for your instruction and suggestion in step by step.
How to have my Xperia Z1 CWM ready and rooted with a stable ROM preferably KitKat.
In advance and regards to your times, I'd like to hand a big thump up :good: for any share and help bestow of your comment.
Cheers, :fingers-crossed:

If you want to keep your warranty , the best way would be the following:
1) Use this guide to get root and recovery on stock .290 firmware : http://youtu.be/1aq9YTlfCgc
2) Once you have root, you will be able to back up your TA partition (DRM keys)
-if you don't know any terms or are confused look here: http://youtu.be/l78p_2ShPS0
3) Now that you have your TA backup safe you can go to official Sony website to unlock your bootloader: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
4) Choose a custom rom that you want, flash kernel and rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/orig-development
If you ever want to get back to stock. Use Flashtool to flash stock firmware, restore TA, relock bootloader.
Never attempt to restore TA on custom ROM - this will brick your device
If you don't care about warranty and don't mind loosing Bravia Engine, X-reality, Bionz etc forever; do the following:
1) unlock bootloader
2)Choose a custom rom that you want, flash kernel and rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/orig-development
1) Download the .ftf file named C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Global 1277-2880_R4A from the compiled FTF thread at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
This is a version of the original Stock Rom that the VROOT program will actually work on when trying to ROOT your phone.
2) Flash the ROM you downloaded using Flashtool (steps on how you can go about doing that should be in the Xperia Z1 General forum.) and now, you're ready to root your phone with it.
3) Download, install and run VROOT to root your phone. Again, more information on how to properly root your phone using VROOT can be found in the Xperia Z1 General forum. For me, I just turned on USB Debugging on my Z1, connected my phone to my computer while VROOT was running and clicked the green button until I got root access. It's extremely easy.
4) With Root Access, now you can download and install Dual Recovery for the Xperia Z1 on your phone.
5) Download the latest iHackers 2.0 ROM from the Xperia Z1 Android Development thread and copy it to your phone. This is hands down, the best ROM for the Xperia Z1 right now in terms of battery life. With the latest 4.3 update, I'm able to get over 2 Days worth of battery life on one charge. Battery life is much better on the new iHackers 2.0 ROM running Android 4.3.
6) Download the flashable Locked Dual Recovery for the Xperia Z1 here. http://nut.xperia-files.com/
The file is called XZ-lockeddualrecovery2.7.63-BETA.flashable.zip (8.48MB), download it and copy it to your phone, preferably the same place you copied the iHackers 2.0 ROM. To make things easier for yourself, create a new folder on your phone or SD Card in your phone and name it iHackers. Copy both the iHackers 2.0 ROM and the flashable Locked Dual Recovery.zip file into this folder.
7) With both files now copied to a folder on your phone, you're now ready to go into recovery to flash the iHackers 2.0 ROM. Boot into recovery and once you're there, do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset before Installing the ROM.
The rest of these steps are now taken directly from the iHackers 2.0 download thread on the Xperia Z1 Android Development forum.
8) Install the ROM and THEN Dual Recovery. Don't make the same mistake I did, once the installer is finished, DON'T REBOOT THE DEVICE. Uncheck the "Reboot Device" box and go back to recovery to install the flashable Dual Recovery.zip file that's in the iHackers 2.0 folder.
9) Switch Off Your Phone (Do Not Reboot). Select No to Disable Flash Recovery Confirmation.
10) Install Kernel.ftf for C6903 (.290) or Kernel.ftf for C6902 (.290) with Flashtool to get compatible Kernel and Baseband. To download the kernel.ftf file, go to the original iHackers 2.0 thread to download and flash the kernel using Flashtool. You should be familiar with Flashtool at this point since if you make it to this step, you've already used Flashtool once to flash the .534 baseband version of Android.
11) Reboot and Enjoy. Now you're running the latest version of Android 4.3 on your Xperia Z1 on a Locked Bootloader WITH full Root Access. Sure, it's not the stock version but the iHackers 2.0 version of Android 4.3 is just as good, if not better. This will certainly do until there's a better way to simply root the newest Stock Version of Android 4.3.
Step by Step Guide made by @x016x so Thanks him, and Me, because I posted here.
You can flash the latest z1 dual recovery, not only 2.7.63.

So you are in bootloop? Something goes wrong there then. I don't know what is the main problem.
Now to go back to the beginning you have to flash Stock FTF with Flashtool.
I was using PAC ROM on my Xperia Z since after few weeks after buying the phone, but i find PAC rom kinda slow, so I wanted to go back to stock kernel, rom. So I decidede to relock bootloader(I already did it once and went back to PAC). But this time, after relock my phone is dead, all I can do is get it into flashmode and fastboot. I am not able to flash stock firmware. I need help, please guys. I can post logs, screenshot, whatever you need.
if the phone is able to get into flashmode and fastboot it is not bricked at all you should be able to reflash stock rom without any issue I suggest using flashtool and google how to flash to stock rom xperia z
Thank you for your fast reply. I am gonna keep trying from other PCs, with fresh install of flashtool and drivers. Does the version of stock firmware make any difference?
I have managed to unbrick it by flashing stock firmware as you said. I am very happy but I would still like to get my device rooted, But something based on stock kernel not some crazy stuff. Could you tell me how? Dont wanna mess up things again
