It would be absurd not to include them as this phone can clearly run Active Not. But maybe theyre not adding them so people who want this feature pay $300 more for the Moto X.
I believe Active Display requires an AMOLED type Display which is only found on the old and new Moto X. The Display technology of the Moto G, which is an IPS LCD, function differently and afaik just isnt capable of this feature.
No, even if it does have AMOLED Motorola won't allow it, since it's reserved for the X. But they did update the Assist app to show more features to the G. You can download the third-party Active Display app called AcDisplay.
And you can use Light Flow to control the LED.
Can someone tell me or direct me to what active notification/moto display is?

Just search for Moto X Active Display on YouTube, it is now renamed to Moto Display.

So, the IR blasters on the Moto X are pretty radical and Active Display really is perfect... well, almost.
Personally I think Active Display looks pretty bad, so I was wondering if it is possible to disable it and use Ambient Display from Lollipop instead? Will it function the same? What about third party apps like AcDisplay, are they capable of using the IR blasters?
On that note are there any other apps that can use the IR blasters for anything else, not necessarily for notifications?
According to Motorola if you use Ambient Display, Moto Display (Active Display) will be disabled meaning the gesture using the IR sensors will not work.
"The Moto Actions Approach gesture will not wake Ambient Display." -Moto X 2014 changelog
I was curious about this myself and was hoping there was a 3rd party solution for this. I too would like to use the approach gesture to turn on ambient display instead of active display.
These aren't ir blasters, they're just sensors.

+1! An exposed module would be great.
Using a Moto Maxx, but I guess it should work just the same right?
Can we reach a dev to get on board?
So... it looks like Motorola came up with a way to utilize Moto Display on the 2nd Generation Moto E without an AMOLED screen - probably similar to how Peek works things. I wonder if they'll port that over to the Moto G 2nd Gen - or if they'll wait and stick it on a 3rd generation Moto G.
I read something somewhere that the second G was supposed to get it but not sure how accurate that source was. Also not really sure what implications this will have on battery life.
If they do implement it however, I hope there is a way to disable it. I'd be willing to test it but will probably not use it.

If you want to really use Moto Display, use the AcDisplay app on the Play Store. It does practicaly the same
Moto display is Ambient Display???
If yes, Is a thing already present on 5.0
Ambient Display - While your phone’s display is off, Ambient Display can show notifications without turning on the full display. This will be triggered when a notification arrives. You will see notifications similar to that shown on the lock screen. You can turn this feature on in the Display menu in Settings, and note that it will increase the power consumption of your device.
Moto G (2nd Generation) - Android™ 5.0 Lollipop - Release Notes
Or you talking about something else?
see my pic, i'm on stock + xposed is not a custom ROM.
It's similar, yes, but it is definitely NOT the same. With moto display, the phone turns on and shows you the notification when you pick it up, move it, take it out of you pocket. That's really the part that I would like to see happen on the Moto G.
Yeah, I am aware that it could affect battery life. My battery life is fine, I would still like to see how it would be.
Test the App 'Gravity Screen' from Playstore. It has the same functions as you described...
Yep, have that installed. Still working on tweaking the settings, but as of yet, I haven't found it as reliable as the same type of features on the first generation Moto X.
the functions that you want are from this app... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.aon or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.motodisplay
Moto E is not on supported list...
I did not see a E 2nd Gen, but i don't think it will have that, only have the Ambient Display, like Moto g on L...
If it have, must be easy to port to G, the hardware is very close....
If is something different from that moto app, share a video a demo, because i'm curios.

Here's the official announcement video. The time index of talking about Active Display is about..... 2:49 or so. It's definitely there. And yeah, I know about Ambient Display, ACDisplay, Dynamic Notifications, Peek, and Gravity Switch, and all the things one can do to try to hack the feature in. They work, more or less. But on my Moto X 2013, active display simply works more reliably. If the Moto E feature ends up ported to the G, I'd be very happy to see it.
custom rom
Guys,
Is there any chance to get any custom rom for moto e 2nd gen because i'm thinking of buying this phone
Looks like the Moto G 3rd gen ended up with Moto Display / Active Display like the Moto E 2nd Gen. Not sure if that means AMOLED screen on it, or if it's using some other way to keep the battery use down.

i download the moto g 3° rom, copy all the files that are related to moto display (all that i think is need maybe there is more), i don't plan to make it work, because i don't use it:silly:, but if you wanna here a zip...
the zip flash ok, but don't work in the rom i'm at (AOSP) it gives a FC ''com.motorola.system'' or some like that did not print the error.
if you try and not work use the Cleaner-MotoDisplay_3.0 will remove every file of the zip MotoDisplay_3.0
have fun... :good:

Right....it's missing LED Notification light on 3rdG.....so how the "Moto Display" works ? If I put it on my office desk, should I pick it up everytime I want to see the notification ? Because every few minutes I go to different rooms.

A bit late, but, should this work? I flashed it but I don't know how to access the feature. Should it have created an app or a settings option? I am using CM12.1, it has Ambient Display but it doesn't work quite as well as the stock Moto Display.
Moto G2 had ambient display built in with 12.1 . Sadly, they removed the feature around August. It had to do something with the kernel was not intended to support it.
Hi all,
The only reason i have not installed a custom rom yet is because I do not want to lose the amazing moto actions. Can we use the moto actions on a custom rom in any way?
Thanks guys
Cheers

I have built the actions that seem important to me as a new implementations of actions for CyanogenMod. Probably all customs ROMs are reusing that work. Look in the CM 12.0 thread for a screen shot of the options that are going to be configurable in CM 12.1.
That said, what actions to you use?

sorry for the late reply.
thats great. I mainly use the twist to open camera, the hand swype over the phone to check if i have any notifications. Have these been implemented?

Yes those are implemented. I just like to ask people what they use in case there are other useful gestures I haven't implemented (I honestly never used stock on my phone so I depend on others to give me feedback on what is useful related to stock behaviour....).
Is Moto voice the only thing that doesn't have an alternative?
Moto display?

Ambient Display just wakes the screen when you get a notific. Moto Display actually wakes it every time you pick the phone up,or nudge it, which is super handy to check the time and all. I have been asking if this is possible in CM13 but so far no one has replied.

Moto Display handles notifications differently from Ambient display. See this link:
http://www.androidcentral.com/inside-moto-x-active-display?_ga=1.123258498.820442600.1451317275
I prefer the way Moto Display notifies and then allows a peek at the information. I have not been able to get Ambient Display to behave the same way. I believe that Moto Display also uses the display differently from Ambient Display. Moto Display is supposed to only light the pixels required for the notification to save battery as opposed to energizing the whole display.
I wonder if the Moto Display apk can be sideloaded and installed on CM13? Moto and Moto Actions can be downloaded from the Play store but they do not include Moto Display functionality. Moto Voice can also be downloaded from the Play Store.

@squid2 recently added support for Moto Camera and Gallery in CM13 for Moto E2 Otus. I can't even download Actions or Moto. Could you please ask him if it is possible for this app as well, even on Lux maybe?

noob. You can download from Play. But you can't use it on custom ROM (CM). Try yourself !
I miss moto display so much. Has anyone been able to port out the motorola active display app for other phones? Anyway to replace the google ambient display with motorola?
Ive tried Notific, acdisplay, dynamic notifications, glimpse and they're all buggy and none of them work as well as moto display.
Is there any alternative apps out there? Any roms with moto display support?
I heard resurrection remix has moto permissions to download the moto apps (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...73&postcount=2) Do all remix's have this?
Thanks
Rico

I want to upgrade my Moto X 2014 to android N but without losing his functions, and with an AOSP rom (can be CM based too)
We should stick a post on this matter, because people are either unable to read or too lazy to search.
There's basically four Moto features:
TWIST TO CAMERA: working in all ROMs (however, Moto Camera doesn't work with DPI other than 480)
CHOP TO TORCH: working in all ROMs
MOTO VOICE: NOT available, it's closed source so we have to manually tweak Google Now/Assistant to recognize our voice from a LOCKED, UNPLUGGED phone (see XDA homepage for a guide on this)
MOTO DISPLAY: NOT available, there's a modified Ambient Display that uses the same sensors (including IR, of course) and it works pretty well.
However, Moto and Ambient are NOT the same thing: Moto is a dedicated app which shows your notifications in a streamlined way and it will keep them in the panel even if you swipe them out of sight; moreover, it will not wake your entire screen if you touch the black area outside the clock/notifications.
Ambient Display, on the other hand, is simply a grayscale lockscreen. It's not nearly as practical as Moto, but the sensors to activate it are the same.
Can someone please make this post a sticky so people do not ask the same questions a hundred more times?
