Hi All,
Just got my chromecast a week ago, initially working fine casting my chrome tab via twitch and etc.. currently only able to get static display with audio running, or totally black screen with audio only if casting from chrome tab.. tried mirror phone, works fine.. any idea what went wrong? didn't do any setting changes or etc..
Update: Even via youtube, Click cast via the youtube tab will trigger my TV to the youtube app, but not playing anything, it just says "play youtube from android or laptop to view it on TV", even tried mirroring a webpage with text, either it goes full black screen, or just a static "screenshot" of the page.. tried with my phone, working like normal such as youtube, screen mirror and etc. Is my ChromeCast broken?

Anyone kind to help?
You aren't using any VPN or DNS masquerading services to access content from outside of your country, are you?
It could also be your WiFi signal isn't as good as it used to be. Check for nearby APs on same/neighboring channels and try switching.

definitely no.. as i've used another much lower spec (Intel Celeron) laptop to try casting on the same network and it works flawlessly.. on the other hand, my much powerful PC just stuck there. Tried updating GC (ATI Radeon without switchable graphics), and even reinstalled chrome and the extension. Still doesn't work..

Is your more-powerful PC on a wired or wireless connection? It's possible there's some fault in your router's wired-wireless bridging that's causing issue.
Mine still works, but casting the entire desktop seems not to mute the audio on the PC side now, so there's a delayed echo. Casting the tab does mute the PC audio. Weird.

wired connection, don't think that is a problem as my connection works fine, internet and etc all works fine, even the "weaker" laptop is connecting to the same router.
i know mirroring the entire desktop is more taxing, but I just could not get it work even just casting tab.. casting everything will just appear static on the TV and whatever u do next "typing, moving mouse cursor and etc" will not appear on TV and just stays on as a "picture" instead of mirroring what is happening on the tab but audio cast through flawlessly..

Definitely sounds like an issue getting the picture compressed and sent over.
If you drop your desktop resolution to to 1280x720 or lower does it get better?
Have to admit, while things were smooth with my 1920x1200 monitor, now that I upgraded to 3440x1440 (LG 34UM95 - it kicks butt!) I can't cast the entire desktop smoothly anymore either, heh. I still get a picture, just not as smooth...
What router do you have?

have not tried dropping resolution as previously working perfectly.. never tried casting entire desktop before because I am using the non-beta CC extension, tried before the beta CC to cast tab, same problem. Router is a D-Link, but i am quite certain that is not the issue... btw.. Thanks alot for troubleshooting.. spent nearly a week googling and it seems most ppl had the audio issues rather than video. :good:

hey guys, just got my Chromecast and works perfect in my 40" tv. but when I plug it into my new 60" toshiba smart tv the screen image is there but the whole picture is pink/purple. any ideas?
Sounds like you have a bad HDMI port or TV.
Hey, I'm having the same exact problem you are having. I have a 55" Toshiba Smart Tv and I originally purchased the chromecast on the first day it went on sale, came home and found everything to be in shades of Pink/purple. I returned it thinking it was a problem with the device since I've never had any problems with HDMI ports on the TVs and just got another chromecast device today and the SAME THING HAPPENED! I've tried all ports and the chromecast does not work on any (my blu-ray and other HDMI connected devices work fine on all of them ). Please let me know if you find a solution.
Thank you.

If you have an HDMI audio receiver you can also just plug it into an HDMI port there too. I have mine plugged into my sony 7.2 receiver. Works fine, CEC and all.

I am also having this issue on my Toshiba Smart TV (Toshiba 47L6200U). Wanted to add that at one point I switched from USB power on the television to the wall charger, and the Chromecast went through an update during which time the progress wheel was in full color. Once it finished the picture then changed back to purple. Unfortunately I have no other devices to try to plug it into but there does appear to be a pattern with these sets.
Unfortunately I don't have a receiver and hadn't planed on getting one for this set up. I've never been able to connect the TV to the internet to perform any firmware updates so perhaps this may help? I'm really not sure. I also have seen that once it is updating - the rotating wheel is in the normal proper colors, however once it reverts back to the setup/welcome screen - it goes back to the shades of pink. I called up google and they said they've not heard of it so it seems to be a problem solely with the Toshiba XXL6200U series TV's. Have any of y'all performed the firmware updates?

Out of curiosity did you try the HDMI extender that came with your ChromeCast in case it is a connection issue?
I have the same TV, but have not received my chromecast yet. I'm wondering if it may be hdmi cec is off or on? I read up on this more and it may be the hdmi handshake that is causing the issue. It says to swap ends, try another cable etc.

I tried using the extender that came with it, and also another one I had laying around the house. Neither of them worked.
I'm not really tech savvy so not sure what CEC is or how to turn it on or off. Getting frustrated trying to do the firmware update as well. I connected a USB with the firmware update on the root menu but for some reason the TV isn't recognizing the usb.

I have an old 2007 vintage Toshiba 37X3030DB. If you have the Chromecast plugged into HDMI-2 (Digital only port), select that as the input port, then power on the Chromecast, it completely works as expected. However, change back to HDMI-1, then back to HDMI2 using the Toshiba remote, you get a permanent blue screen - even though the Chromecast thinks it's working.
Placed a tech support call with Toshiba UK to see if updated firmware beyond 2.9 will help...
I have a 2006 Westinghouse (it was one of the very first 1080P TV available). I have had issues with Pink screen screen with various HDMI devices. Usually turning the TV off and back on will fix the pink screen, usually on the first try though not always.
With the Chromecast this seem to work, but not anymore. It may or may not have to do with the update to FW 13300, I can't say for sure. But sadly the pink screen is more persistent now.
My Chromecast is connected to my Pioneer receiver and I found that if s switch back and fourth with another input I can eventually get rid of the pink screen. I works best if I wait and let the input receive a signal and at time it does take me several attempts before it works.
So just something to try.
don't know if this is related, but sometimes when you have a loose connection on say a pc monitor you will get a pink screen, it could be that the connection to your guys tv isnt fitting all the way in, might want to take a closer look. it could be that the mini usb thats connected to the Chromecast is weighing down on the chromecast and making it loose and thus creating the pink screen, might wanna look closer at the connection.
im trying to cast from computer.. chromebrowser, has worked perfect earlier. but now the picture is pink.. sounds work good... the chromecast background pictures shows fine when not casting anything...
If I use the built in cast option in youtube.com it was great.. but not when casting the whole page in chromebrowser..
i have a really bad connection at home, but it has worked on that before

This is my exact issue.
It isn't the HDMI port, it isn't faulty, or else every device would show the pink hue. The dongle itself isn't broken or else everything would be pink and not just tabs that are cast, like cowsick said, Youtube casts perfectly, just any other tabs.
Kinda blows, worked fine previously, an no one anywhere seems to be addressing the issue.

Green, gray or magenta are often the sign of decoding "nothing" meaning the data didn't reach the destination in time.
I would look to network latency caused by network congestion between the PC and Chromecast (on a bandwidth-limited connection, or are there other network transfers going on in the background?) and to transcoding latency on the computer casting to Chromecast (how busy is the CPU?). Try reducing the resolution via the Cast extension settings.
For direct casting to Chromecast via native apps, Chromecast can buffer and negotiate connection speed as necessary. When it's getting a tab casted over, there's a constant stream of frames being generated, compressed and sent over that need to be decoded - all in reasonable sync with the PC.
For example, in the case of MPEG-2 for DVD, there are Presentation TimeStamps (PTS) and Decode TimeStamp (DTS). PTS determines when a frame should be display (ie, 0:09;13 should be displayed 9 seconds, 13 frames in) while DTS determines when the frame's data need to be retrieved and decoded. If a frame can't be retrieved by the decode time (for example, because of a disc read error) usually the player will simply hold the previous frame, so you'll see a pause. But if the player actually tries to decode the data (for example, in a video editing program), you can see a frame of mainly or solid green, gray or magenta - an empty frame caused by decoding "nothing."
RojasTKD and BurnOmatic are right that a similar effect can be seen if HDCP handshake is broken or interrupted - there's a "garbage" screen that appears until HDCP re-synchronizes, but as andres2163 and cowsick say, if that was the case it should happen for any Chromecast output, not just tab casting.
Fix: disable hardware accelaration

Hello,
Ive just got my Chromecast from Zavvi.com and got it all set up and connected to the wifi. I am ready to cast but am having some issues.
I cant get any videos or sound to come out from it
When I try to send a youtube video, it switches to that video, tells me what it is but the video doesnt play, simply displaying a black screen.
When I go to play music, it goes to tell me I am in play music but I cant hear anything.
When I go to play videos, same thing. Says I want to watch transformers - but then just displays a black screen.
I have also tried casting from my chrome tab, which works fine - but as soon as you go to youtube.com within your chrome tab and try to cast it... guess what... chromecast is aware of the film you have chosen to watch, but it doesnt actually play it.
I have it updated, devices are as follows:
Nexus 5
BT homehub 5
Acer laptop running latest chrome browser
Chromecast using latest firmware - it updated itself
The only thing it does flawlessly so far is casting from a chrome tab.
Iain
When you tab-cast from Chrome on your desktop, the video stream is being received by your computer and re-transmitted to Chromecast over your local network. But when you send a Youtube video to the Chromecast, it is trying to receive the stream directly, which fails in your case. Answer is obvious: the Chromecast does not have full access to the internet. Something in your router or network configuration is blocking it, but not blocking your computer.

I read on another forum, that UPnP and IGMP multicast is required at the router level for Chromecast to work. And that BT's new homehub 5 doesn't support this?
Is this true, would this be a likely cause?
Why would BT output a new router that didn't have functionality of old routers?
Any other ideas what might be the cause? The chromecast thinks it is online - it doesnt seem to say it isnt.

Can someone help me out. I have plain jane chrome cast it has not been rooted. Whenever im streaming to my TV in the middle of watching a show it just stops. It does not matter if its on my phone, tablet or from my laptop via google chrome. The only way to get it going again is to unplug the chromecast and start all over. I thought the whole point of the chromecast was to stream to tv. I've had it for like 2 months and so far it sucks.

Most important question here is what application are you casting from?
There's a huge difference in required bandwidth casting media compared to casting media from YouTube, Hulu, etc.

Also, check the wireless signal strength at the TV's location. Mine was also stopping mid-stream on our kitchen TV after performing flawlessly on the one in the LV. I was wondering what had gone wrong until I remembered that wireless reception is a bit dicey in the kitchen.

Very good and important point.
I just made a post describing the different bandwidth needs and router quality that might help visualize things better for the picture-oriented.
Just bought a chromecast... Like it so far.
I can cast anything from my Galaxy S3 that allows it; AllCast photos/music, YouTube app & Netflix app.
I can cast YouTube through Chrome browser. I don't use much else that could cast (HBO Go, etc,) via the browser. I can see the Chromecast from any device, and for the most part, it works flawlessly.
What I can't do irritates the living hell out of me, esp. since I can't find a reason why this doesn't seem to work for just me. Casting a tab in Chrome or the whole desktop will not work for me. I've tried searching; tried restarting, re-installing, reset to stock, checking VPNs, disabling the 5 ghz band from the router, re-installing Chrome, re-installing the chromecast extension. Nothing seems to work.
I press the cast button (extension) in Chrome (v32 I believe), and the TV flashes to a black screen, the blue cast icon appears on what tab I'm trying to cast, then after about 5 seconds, the red box w/ an X replaces the extension. "Unable to cast" is the reason. It tells me to check my connection.
I'm running a Windows 8 64-bit Lenovo laptop with updated Chrome. YouTube works through Chrome browser, but casting a tab won't.
I know this is a beta extension, but no one seems to have real big issues casting tabs. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your input
Do you have any virtual network cards installed like what you get when you install Virtual Box?
For Windows 8, here are more things to try:
Turn the 'Sharing' setting ON.
You can turn this setting on by following the steps below:
Navigate to your Desktop. (Your Desktop will be one of the default tiles on your homescreen)
Click on your WiFi settings on the bottom of your desktop bar (At the very bottom, right hand side of your Desktop)
Right click on your connected Wi-Fi network
Select 'Turn sharing on or off'
Ensure sharing is set to 'on'
Please note: Software that installs a virtual NIC - VMware, Win8 Hyper-V, but also some NAS drivers - may cause discovery issues between a laptop/desktop and the Chromecast.

Be sure to reboot the router between settings changes for good measure.

I will try the laptop on a wired connection tonight. If that's the case though, it kind of defeats the purpose as my router is right below my tv w/ the chromecast; might as well just connect the laptop to the tv via HDMI.
By "plug it into wall power" do you mean the laptop or the chromecast? The laptop was on wall power last night, almost always is. I can try the chromecast, as it's only plugged into the tv.
This is driving me crazy, as everything else works. YouTube from the laptop casts perfectly, as does any app on either one of our Galaxy S3s.

If your router really is directly under Chromecast, I'm surprised Chromecast is getting a signal at all - it's probably being bounced off surroundings.
The WiFi antenna transmission tends to not cover directly above/below.
For a quick test, turn your router on its side if it'll balance, or move it (or Chromecast) off to the side so it's not directly above/under.

I'll try that. It's not directly under, sorry for the exaggeration. My TV is mounted on the wall 3 feet above our entertainment center, where the router is located.
I still find it weird that everything works but casting a tab, which leads me to believe it's software or laptop related. I'm going to try it from my backup Windows 7 machine in the guest bedroom, see if that works.
Thanks bhiga for all your help!!!

Anywhere within about a 20-degree cone above/below tends to be bleh for signal.
Another computer is a great test. Keep the results coming and we'll get somewhere sooner or later.
If you have a third-party antivirus (ie, not Microsoft) it may be worth disabling it temporarily. Sometimes the more-intrusive antivirus "suites" include firewall components that may intercept Chromecast traffic as a potential network flood or DoS attack.

Another laptop (office; Windows 7) works perfectly casting a tab and screen. So it's not the unit OR the router settings.
I will try moving my router, but that confuses me as I can flawlessly stream YouTube videos from my main laptop (living room; Windows 8), the one I'm having difficult casting a tab from.
Will first disable 3rd party anti-virus software/firewalls and attempt that. How can I check VPNs on a Windows 8 machine? All tutorials I read are about Windows 7 and they seemed to change the settings around between versions.

The good news is that nothing else is broken.
The bad news is the broken part is you(r laptop).
YouTube casting only involves your problem laptop for sending the cast request to Chromecast. From there Chromecast goes and fetches the requested video on its own directly from YouTube, so no laptop CPU or network is involved. (See diagrams in WiFi Bandwidth and Router considerations)
Wish I could help you on Windows 8 - I have the upgrade but have held off on installing it...
What are the specs of your working vs non-working laptop?
Tab casting take take a good amount of CPU horsepower so it might be that the encoding isn't keeping up and the Cast extension is giving you a misleading error message/condition.

Well there goes that theory... Both should be fine.
Hmm. I'm stumped.
Does Windows 8 still have a "Safe mode"?
If you have an Ubuntu LiveCD you could try booting off of that and see if you can cast tab from Chrome in Ubuntu.
It's not supported, but these guys seem to say it works.

I've made SOME progress. Figured that the Adware Antivirus is clashing with the cast extension; I couldn't just disable it, I had to completely stop the process/program.
I'm still stuck though, because now I have the blue cast logo on my TV screen, but nothing ever gets cast. This didn't happen before, it would just crash and tell me "unable to cast".
I guess I'll try completely uninstalling that antivirus, see if I can get a bit further.

Progress is good. Also check Windows Firewall to make sure "Portable Media Devices" are enabled/allowed.
I cannot cast anything without it buffering on my chromecast anymore.
Youtube/Netflix can play but resolution is of lowest quality (probably because its built in), but casting tab from web browser will not work at all. At first I thought my internet speed was slow, but I do a speed test most days (on mac) and get an average of 30mpbs-35mbps. Mobile speed I get is 5mbps. Funnily enough I play Netflix through phone and it plays but like I said, quality is compromised. My other tv which is a smart tv (no Chromecast) plays Netflix/Youtube of the full 1080p and no lagging. So which leads me to believe that there is a problem with the Chromecast itself?
My only other option is to see if it works on the smart tv, but then it defeats the purpose of having a smart tv. And I will be without smart tv/chromecast in the bedroom.
Any advice please?
yep, I'm finding this too. I ended up hooking my laptop up via hdmi because casting was so poor. Really low resolution and it would lose connection (black tv screen, laptop still playing) for 3-4 seconds, every 15 minutes or so.
I'm very quickly losing patience with the CC.
After 3 chromecast (of which 1 returned) and trying 2 new routers specifically for making cc work I couldn't find any permanent solution. Where any phone or tablet works fine for streaming netflix, plex, etc, cc would struggle, I gave up, it's useless. Btw, the routers I tried for the past year are netgear r6200, Linksys ea6500 and currently netgear r7000.
Sent from my HTC One
Do you try speed4cast? You can see if the problem is from internet or from CC. Reboot router, enable upnp on the router and look for new update by rebooting CC.
If nothing works, make a factory reset and try to cast. If not, return the device.
