Flashing global firmware to branded/sim-locked phone. - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, as title says it all wanted to ask if flashing global firmware on branded/sim-locked phone will/will not harm my phone anyhow. Device has orange brand, so the only firmware I can flash is branded orange?
Would appreciate a fast response. Thanks in advance, Earl.

Flashing a global firmware is fine. Branded firmwares just have carrier specific apps that can be deleted if you are not worth that carrier

Isn't that against the rules? You have to find out which one is the best for you with different combinations of ROMs, Kernel, Modems and so on.
For IMEI Backup read here:

Would unbranded firmware install fine on branded z1?

I have C6906 from Bell and i can't wait for bell to release 4.3
can i just flash unbranded 257 using flash tool
and use pc companion to update to 290?
my phone is not sim unlocked yet / never touched boot-loader / didn't even bother rooting it.
I am still on stock 534
thanks in advance guys
yes
As Greg already said - yes.
Branded version is same ROM but without a craps from your carrier.
So, not only you'll be able to flash it without any problems but you'll be very happy when you see that your phone is little bit faster and "cleaner".
Also, if you want to unlock SIM lock (if it's available on your device), you can do that by simple code order via Internet.

I've got the same phone from bell. First thing I did was flash an unbranded ROM. Bell has a few bloat apps that I hate. Best part is if you flash unbranded you don;t need to wait for updates. I got my update through PC Companion the day it was released.
Search the forums please.

I'm also on Bell with a c6906 and have done exactly what you are asking about and you will be fine. In case you didn't know we can't unlock our bootloader so the fix in 4.3 does not benefit us. Still 4.3 is a great update, loving the phone regardless.

Copy *#*#7378423#*#* to your phone dialer and it will open up a service menu. Go to Service info then Configuration. The last line in that screen will say Boot loader unlocked allowed: No
So we are outta luck.

Losing IMEI and SIM not accepted problems happen when you downgrade, not update.

When will my Z1 get 4.3/4.4 update?

Only Sony and/or your provider can confirm that, but even then it would be nice if you could tell us what version are you on now? You don't even tell us that so how are we meant to help you......

Why don't you just use Flashtool to get it to your phone using one of the available ftf's ?
Here is a video on how to do that:
No I don't want to void my warranty by rooting. I am just wondering when I might get the update. Thanks anyways for your helps

Flashing with flashtool don't need root acces and it can't be detected.
You have to read before ask,you will have a reponse faster.
Read that ,if your Z1 is not on the list wait a week or two or flash with Flashtool
I would update through the PC companion. Many people seem to have encountered problems flashing with flashtool on this update. It was taking forever for the ota for me as well

When the Z1 first announcement it come with 4.2.2 already. So if he ask for 4.3 or 4.4 that meant he on 4.2.2 already.

Whether you use UK generic or any other generic one does not make a difference whatsoever, but it's up to you.
I have never encountered any problems when using Flashtool. Just make sure to use the most recent version.
The 4.3 is avaliable so if you use OTA or SEUS you get it.
As for rooting, it doesnt avoid your warranty unless you remove the root and install a clean version when you deliver the device for repair or replace it.
Only thing that avoid the warranty is unlocking the bootloader.
Keep your .257 rooted version and wait for a rooted locked version for 4.3.
Btw there will come a hotfix version in January (newer 4.3) for Z1.
4.4 will come April/May i think...

Don't worry about it. If you flash a different regions rom, your customisation number will change.
That has no functional effect on your phone whatsoever and it's not something that can be excluded from the flash as it's just a value in build.prop.

Don't be. The customisation number is part of the rom. Just don't concern yourself with it. As long as you flash a FTF for your specific model, then you'll be fine.

It is, but it doesn't matter. When you flash a different rom, the customisation number will change.
It's mainly used when checking for updates via the PCC or OTA, so you will receive updates for the current customisation version of your phone. As the OP has unlocked their bootloader, they cannot receive updates via those methods anyway.

[Q] De-Bloated FTF for locked bootloader?

Hey guys, are there any stock FTF files around which do not contain as much bloatware and can be flashed with a locked bootloader ?

Yeah it would, but flashing a generic firmware would at least get rid of the o2 branding stuff. Different FTFs can be found in the forum or using XperiFirm.

Generic global is your best bet, most of the bloat in that version can be uninstalled or disabled.
I have an FTF for it, could upload it later today, but it sounds like you're already on it.
Doesn't US firmware offer better reception etc in the states? Also does flashing them wipe the phone
Um... It really hasnt be proven yet.

Also is there any risk in not wiping data when you flash firmware?
The US firmware doesn't have any carrier bloat, it's for the US unlocked version. It has Crackle TV that can be uninstalled, and a CMAS alerts app. Otherwise it's the same as UK version.

Sorry what I meant was what does the generic version not have that the UK version does? It doesn't apply directly to the US version, but will give a baseline.
