So I'm kinda new to this stuff. I rooted my phone ages ago with an automatic root thing which actually worked. Since then I haven't really done anything like install Cyanogenmod (I don't really know how to to be honest). I do have CWM installed. However, earlier today, I was following a tutorial on how to get the Android L Google Home Material Design working, I followed the instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2796019 and it said to do this: Install launcher and then edit system/build.prop and change ro.build.version.codename=REL to ro.build.version.codename=L and reboot phone to get material design. So I did that and when I rebooted it, my phone went to the S3 Mini logo and the screen went black. This happened every time I tried turning it on, even after factory resetting.
I really need someone to help me get my phone back to normal, and I know nothing about this, so I might need some noob guidance. Also, I don't have a microSD adapter for PC, so if there is a way of unbricking without one, please tell me.
Thanks
Get a microsd cable and edit build.prop back to normal or flash stock rom or some custom rom based on stock rom...

Okay for those of you who don't know, I totally bricked my phone based on a dumb decision last time and not knowing what I was doing.
I am thinking off trying to root my phone again, any advice on what rom I should root to and which is the best and most stable for the G1.

u should really go with cyanogens roms
Cyanogen's latest is pretty sweet. As long as you follow the steps correctly to root your phone, you shouldn't have any problems flashing any of the roms available. Then you can test them out, and see what you like.
does anyone know any good tuts to use to do so?

Thank you so much everyone! You all were a huge help. I have rooted my phone successfully this time and I love it!
I followed the instructions from the link on this thread to put cyanogen on my g1 but after the skateboarding android logo faded all I got was a illuminated phone I let it sit that way for 25 minutes hoping something would happen but nada so I restored a backup. Can anyone tell me what went wrong and how I can get cyanogen working?
Nobody can tell you what went wrong since we don't know what step you skipped/didn't do right based off that statement. All we can say is follow the guide to a T. The guides are the best the communitty has to offer/has produced on how to do what you want to do. If you can't follow the guide, sadly there is nothing we can do to help beyond repeating what the guide already says.
I've got cm recovery 1.4 so that step and the ones leading to it are done right, right? Then I ran the recovery, made a back up, wiped data, applied zip drc83 defanged, applied
Cm update 4.2.13 (I think 13, whatever stable version the "latest version" link give you), applied ota radio, and rebooted (automatically took me back to recovery) rebooted again, got g1 logo followed by the cyanogen android logo once that faded all the lights on my phone came on and stayed on and I had no display (apart from the backlight).
I tried multiple times with no luck. I downloaded the cm update from my phone could that of caused a problem? Everything else was dl'ed from a pc.
What's the differance between drc83 and signed dream devphone should I try that instead?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679
Follow the guide to a T, since you are partialy there I will tell you what you have left:
1. Download the developer recovery ROM (This is different than drc83 by a lot)
2. Download the latest CM
3. Put both on the root of your SD card
4. Boot into recovery mode, flash the developer ROM, then flash the latest CM
5. Use the "Home" and "Back" buttons to reboot the phone
6. Tada! Success!
7. Never, ever, do anything the guide doesn't tell you to do. If it says flash file X don't flash file Y because you think it is close enough. Never do extra stuff, ie if it doesn't say flash a radio by itself, don't flash a radio by itself because it seems like a good idea.
Hello folks,
Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:
firmware 2.1-update1
baseband
32.36.00.28h_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.34-cyanogenmod
mod version
cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3
build
epe54b
I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...
Any positive input will be highly appreciated! thanks!
Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.
Heres an example of tethering via usb/forwarded port
http://blog.tangorangers.com/2009/02/tetherbot_android_and_slackware_how_to/
you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.
Man you guys are awesome! thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.
You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.
Hi everyone,
To start, i did check for an answer to this question and it didn't appear for this specific phone.
Allright, i bought my phone from a user on ebay. I just received the phone today and it appears that the software is Zen Hero. It's an ok ROM but i'd prefer to at least start my new phone with the stock ROM and flash a new one when i get used to the phone. I've tried to update the software via the settings menu but it says its at the latest firmware. I've done a factory reset clearing everything, hard reset, and all that, but I can't get it back to the stock ROM. Will I have to flash it and if so, can i do it with a micro sd card instead of via usb cable?

Are you saying you want to go back to stock like it came out of the box? Or stock but still rooted? This a link for Nfinite's stock rom,(Deodex if down the road you want add themes or mods,or Odex if you want a purely stock rom that you can do very little to,but runs a little faster and boots quicker)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790889
i would prefer fresh out of the box, i would rather learn how to reroot anyway later on when im more interested.
But yea 100% stock fresh out of the box.
actually man, believe it or not, i found it out and got it down. I used theunlockr tutorial. Thank you very much

Hi everyone.
I have an Optimus 2x, and when i updated it to 2.3.4 i could not use superoneclick to root my phone instead i found an answer on how to root it.
I needed to install cwm 5 and after that busybox and so on, and it worked, it was rooted.
Now i have a other problem, i have an update on my phone and when i click on installing it starts to reebot then it comes to cwm screen, there i'm stuck.
I have tryed everything there trying to update it but nothing works.
So now i am wondering if any of you can help me?
Got any idea what i can do to update or what i am doing wrong?
//Szander.
Ok, so now i did a recover so i get back my phone as it was before i installed cwm and tryed to update, it did work fine.
Until the update was done, then it stopped, and nothing i did worked the little android just stand there and looked at me.
So what now, i removed the battery and hoped for the best, now the phone would not bot at all.
After a few tears and a few swear words, i thougt about something, maybe i could use nvflash to get it all back as it was ???
I tryed closed my eyes and after a few minutes i could restart my phone and it loaded as useall, but the update was gone, ofcourse.
So now back to square one again.
Sigh (
Hi Szander,
So just to be completely clear, you're back at a perfectly stock 2.3.4 unrooted ROM and you want to root it, right?
Why not trying to follow cyanogen wiki to root it?

No.
I have cwm, and its still rooted.
What i want is to get rid of cwm so i can update to the latest update wich is v20q.
I have tryed this with recover but its only working on froyo, i belive i read it somewhere.
And when i recovered my phone then the problem really started, but thats fine now.
And as an plus is that now when i run LGMobileupdate tool its saying that i have v20q but in the phone it says that i still have v20I.
Weird.
I have read alittle more and (if i got it right) found out that i might just need to use smartflash on the phone via my computer to get rid of cwm and get a perfectly stocked phone again.
So can you help me please, hoping that you understand my problem.
Yup, as far as I know you are correct. To get your phone back to stock you need to flash a stock ROM using either smartflash or nvflash. I haven't done it so I can't guide you through it personally, but search this forum you should find the relevant threads easily enough.
If you have trouble finding it let me know I'll help you searching.
EDIT: By the way, thanks for Meshuggah, one of the best bands ever I should visit Sweden sometime
Hi, I flashed CM 10.2 on my Galaxy S4, and I used titanium backup to restore all my apps, only apps I didn't choose was TouchWiz and the TouchWiz simpler one. And it said I needed to reboot my device for the changes to apply, so I did that. When I rebooted it said everything stopped working. Even the core thing. Screen went black. Then I took out the battery and when I tried to go to my custom recovery, it just skipped the recovery screen and booted into cm again and same thing happened. Everything just stopped working. Help please. Also I am able to get into download mode. I just don't know how to recover from this. I am running 4.3.1 cm nightly, well I was. I don't know if I could count it was 4.3 I am still really new and I just want to reset my phone so I can actually use it. I hope I did not hard brick it. I'm on the verge of crying.
Try flashing it with something equivalent to Sony s ftf flashtool
